Trustees say they will follow the auditorgeneral’s recommendations to repair thedistrict’s finances.by Matthew [email protected]

Failures of planning, financial controls,and the board’s own inability to worktogether or with staff are at the root ofLangley School District’s financial problems,said the auditor general’s report releasedFriday.

“We have made a number of recommenda-tions to the board, the most important onebeing the trustees must find ways to worktogether effectively,” provincialAuditor General John Doylewrote.

The auditor general wasbrought in earlier this year tohelp get the district’s financesin order.

Over the course of severalmonths, the district went frombeing told it had a small surplus,to finding it had a combined debt and deficitof about $13.5 million.

Doyle’s report does not get into the nutsand bolts of how the money vanished from

the books. It makes a series of nine recom-mendations, broken down across areas ofgovernance, internal financial controls, andlong-term planning.

“A key risk to the future suc-cess of the Langley SD [schooldistrict] is the working relation-ships amongst board trustees,”the report says, adding that alack of a positive “tone at thetop” and two distinct factions arehindering the board’s work.

“…one side is seen to havean agenda to remove the super-intendent, and the other is seento accept the perspective of man-agement without a healthy levelof questioning,” the report says.

This has caused “a culture ofmistrust” on the board.

Aside from personal animos-ity, board members don’t haveenough governance training,there is no overall risk manage-ment strategy for the district,and the board is not holdingmanagement to account to

maintain systems of control.In addition, the report points to a lack of

an internal audit function or a whistleblowerpolicy.

The board needs more regular financial

information to support their decision-mak-ing, the report notes.

In the second key area, internal financialcontrols need to be strengthened,the report says.

“Lack of effective internal controlsincreases risk, including the risk offraud,” the report says.

One problem is Langley’s decen-tralized budgeting system, whichgives school principals the respon-sibility for their school’s budgets.

The principals often don’t haveenough financial knowledge or train-ing, and actual costs can exceedbudgets.

The report even singles out theuse of Excel spreadsheets, which are

prone to human error and may be contribut-ing to inaccurate numbers.

Financial accounting and managementhave been improved in recent months, butthere are still risks, the report says.

The final major area of problems is long-term planning.

While the district creates five-year capitalplans, that’s the limit of its planning for thefuture.

“A 10-year school district facilities plan(SDFP) is not prepared or provided to theboard for approval,” the report says.

Cruise-In or not, car buffsand hot rodders gathered toburn some rubber on Langleystreets Friday.by Matthew [email protected]

The smell of burning rubberand the cheering of onlookershung over Industrial Avenue inLangley City Friday night.

Although the Langley GoodTimes Cruise-In was cancelled,more than 100 people and morethan 30 classic cars lined theroad between 200th and 200AStreets, from before 7 p.m.

The car buffs were there toshow off their cars and to checkout others, but they were alsothere to cheer on drivers whodid burnouts and doughnuts onthe streets.

“This is what it’s all about,right there,” said Dave, a Langleyresident, indicating a souped-up engine. Hot rod and musclecar lovers like to see burnouts,Dave said. They’ve been goingon along Industrial Avenue dur-ing Cruise-In weekend for a fewyears, he said.

Dave and a friend visiting fromAlberta were both sorry to seethe Cruise-In shut down thisyear.

“I loved it, I lived for thisweekend,” he said.

One of the drivers doing burn-outs was also upset to see theCruise-In shut down.

The Langley resident declinedto give his name.

He said he was sure itwouldn’t be long before theburnouts drew the police, butbetween 7 p.m. and 8 p.m. therewas no sign of a police cruiser.

Rod Jones was another onlook-er who was sorry the Cruise-Inwasn’t taking place. He broughthis two young boys to see the

burnouts and take some photosof classic cars.

One burnout expert – his shirtproclaims him the “BurnoutKing” – wouldn’t mind seeingburnouts become a sanctionedand controlled part of the Cruise-In.

“I’d rather see barricades,”

said Klaas Reitsma.A drag racing instructor who

teaches high school studentshow to race at the MissionRaceway, Reitsma said most ofthe drivers are trying to be care-ful, but he would hate to see onego out of control.

“People are going to do it nomatter what, so make it safe,”he said.

Reitsma didn’t bring his ownhot rod to the event, as he takespart in burnouts at MissionRaceway.

Langley RCMP did turn outsome time between 8 and 8:30p.m. They issued at least oneticket for driving without duecare and attention.

Officers stayed on IndustrialAvenue with the cruiser lightsflashing and waited until 10:10p.m. when the crowds fullydispersed, said Langley RCMPspokesperson Cpl. Holly Marks.

It’s still unknown if Cruise-In will return or not next year.Volunteers and Langley Cityofficials are meeting later in theweek about the question.

Several people told the Cruise-In organizers in advance thatthey would hold their own,informal events on the weekend,whether the car show was heldor not.

Friday night, a more sedatecrowd of car enthusiasts alsofilled the parking lot of the TimHorton’s and the ICBC officeon the corner of Logan and203rd Street, which serves as animpromptu car show locationevery Friday during the springand summer months.

The president of theLangley Good TimesCruise-In drove fromhis meeting withLangley City officialsand RCMP to a gather-ing of classic, custom,and collector carsgrowing at the nearbyTim Hortons on LoganAvenue early Friday evening.

Riccardo Sestito arrived feel-ing cautiously optimistic aboutthe future of Cruise-In.

He and Cruise-In vice-pres-ident Keith Wilson had justemerged from a two-hour meet-ing where the sole topic of dis-cussion was the possible resur-rection of a charity car showthat has attracted upwards of100,000 people every year toLangley, and raised as much as

$120,000 a year for local char-ities over its 13-year history.

But the 2010 Cruise-In– which would have been heldlast weekend – was cancelled.

The announcementwas made in January,listing a number of rea-sons, including safety.

“It went well,”Sestito said of themeeting. “It was veryproductive.”

Sestito told theLangley Advance he wasscheduled to meet withCruise-In directors last

night (Monday) to offer a rec-ommendation whether to planfor a 2011 show or collapse thesociety.

The community has threeTerry Fox Runs taking placethis Sunday.

Amputee Terry Fox hadhoped to raise $1 fromevery Canadian to fundresearch and find a cure.When his efforts to runacross Canada to raisefunds and increase aware-ness came to a prematureend with the return of hiscancer, Canadians pickedup the mantle, and for thepast three decades, havecontinued to take part inthe annual event.

All funds raised at theannual runs are used bythe Terry Fox Foundationto fund innovative cancerresearch. None of thatmoney goes to administra-tion.

Registration for the 9a.m. five- and 10-kilo-metre Walnut Grove runsis at 8:30 a.m. Everyonewill gather at the WalnutGrove Community Centreand head out through thecommunity.

“We have lots of fam-ily join us. Strollers arevery welcome. We have

a few fast runners whochoose to do the routetwice,” said Walnut Groveorganizer Del Friday.“Our goal is to providethe community with asimple and effective wayto raise money for cancerresearch.”

After not having a runsince 2007, Langley Cityreturns to take part in the30th anniversary year.

That run starts at 10a.m. sharp with registra-tion as of 9 a.m.

Organizers have linedup live music by Orbitand the Lounge Brothers,face painting, hot dogsand smokies courtesy ofFreybe, prizes, extra park-ing and extra washroomsto entice more people.

“We’re hoping to makeit festive and attract moreparticipants,” explainedchairperson Janet Copley.

They are also hopingto make the City run anannual event again.

can do one km, five km,or 10 km routes, the long-est along Nicomekl floodplain trails.

The other mid-mor-ning run takes placein Aldergrove, at theKinsmen CommunityCentre, 269th Street and29th Avenue. Registrationopens at 9 a.m. with therun at 10 a.m.

The Aldergrove routesare one-, two-, five- or 10-kilometres.

Organizer NikkiCastonguay noted that JDTurkey Farms is holdinga fundraiser Sept. 18 withthe proceeds becomingpart of the Aldergrovetotals.

For Terry Fox Runs,people can walk, run, bikeor even rollerblade theirchosen route. The websitewww.terryfox.org letspeople know which runsalso allow people to bringtheir dogs on leashes.

Pledge sheets are avail-able from organizers orvia the website www.terryfox.org. People canregister online in advance.Participants do not need toreside in a community totake part in its event.

Where is Elisa Crivelli? The police aresearching for the woman, who maybe depressed.by Matthew [email protected]

Search and Rescue crews stopped theirhunt for a distraught and possibly injuredwoman in Langley Monday, due to a lackof leads.

However, police were still trying to findElisa Crivelli Monday, withthe asssistance of the Air 2RCMP helicopter.

Crivelli was last seen leav-ing work in Willowbrookearly Sunday morning, pos-sibly bleeding from a self-inflicted wound.

RCMP are asking the public tokeep an eye out for Crivelli, 46, who van-ished from the Willowbrook Dairy Queen.

Crivelli arrived at the restaurant, whereshe works as an overnight custodial per-son, shortly before 5 a.m., said LangleyRCMP spokesperson Cpl. Holly Marks.

“When the day manager arrived atapproximately 7:30 to discover the res-taurant empty – some blood was foundin the restaurant and Langley RCMP wascalled,” Marks said.

Surveillance footage confirmed Crivelliwas alone in the restaurant for about an

hour and a half. When she left, her armappeared to be bleeding. She left withouther vehicle.

“She has recently struggled with depres-sion, and police believe her injury to beself-inflicted,” Marks said. “Foul play isnot suspected.”

Central Fraser Valley Search and Rescuewas called in to help in the search,but they went home empty handed byMonday morning, having exhausted everyavenue of search.

Now the Langley Serious Crime Unitis using its skills, and is trying to track

down any surveillance foot-age that may show whichway Crivelli was headed,Marks said.

Nevertheless, they are ask-ing for anyone with infor-mation about Crivelli orher whereabouts to call the

Langley RCMP at 604-532-3200.Anyone who spots her is asked not toapproach her, but immediately call 911.

“Allow professionals to assist her to getthe medical attention she needs,” Markssaid.

Crivelli is described as 5ft. 1in. tall, 128lbs, with a fair complexion, and mediumlength dirty blonde hair pulled back intoa ponytail.

She was last seen wearing a black jack-et, black shorts, a long black apron withthe Dairy Queen logo on the front, whiterunning shoes and white socks.

New public at the City’sfire hall honours fallenfirefighters.by Matthew [email protected]

Firefighters and LangleyCity politicians offeredtheir tributes to fallenemergency responders asthey unveiled a statue of afirefighter on Friday.

The statue is located infront of the City’s fire hallin the 5700 block of 203rdStreet, placed as if in theact of raising a flag.

City CouncillorRosemary Wallacethanked the many com-munity members whosepassion led to the statue’screation.

Her mind was on theSept. 11, 2001, terror-ist attacks as the statuewas unveiled, she said.In particular, the sacrifi-ces of firefighters in theTwin Towers were in the

thoughts of those gath-ered.

Wallace quoted theBible, “Greater love hathno man than this, that aman lay down his life forhis friends,” just beforethe statue was revealed.

Mayor Peter Fassbendertalked about how firefight-ers all over the world putthemselves in harm’s way.

“They do that every day,depending on the circum-

stances they have to face,”Fassbender said.

Langley MP MarkWarawa noted that allMPs have begun a trad-ition of wearing red onFridays, to honour fire-fighters.

Derek Rowe, whohelped create the statue,said it was inspired by hismeeting with a firefighteron 9/11.

The statue cost $19,000.

Referendummostly a stall

Voters of British Columbia will havea chance to decide for themselves whatshould be done about the HST.

But their decision will have no moreweight than a strong suggestion.

A special committee comprised of 10MLAs – six from the government side ofthe legislature and four from the oppos-ition – has voted to take the HarmonizedSales Tax to a non-binding referendum alittle more than a year from now.

Not surprisingly, since the committee’smake-up was dominated by BC Liberals,the decision is the most favourable out-come for Premier Gordon Campbell andhis government.

It’s also no surprise that the NDP mem-bers of the committee wanted to send BillVander Zalm’s anti-HST bill – the result ofhis successful citizen’s initiative – directlyto the legislature, to be put to a bindingand conclusive vote.

Scheduling a referendum for Sept. 24 ofnext year accomplishes two things for thebeleaguered Liberal government and itsleader.

Surely, they are hoping that a fullyear will allow angry British Columbians– whipped to a frenzy by the anti-HSTcampaign – to forget what they hate aboutthe HST, while (they surely hope) theeconomy recovers enough for riled votersto calm down. It will also give the gov-ernment some time to marshal its forces,and offer the explanations it should haveoffered long ago.

The referendum approach also favoursthe Liberals in that it is non-binding. Evenif voters vote overwhelmingly to quash theHST, the government is not obliged to lis-ten, anymore than it has listened to ordin-ary citizens on this issue thus far.

On the other hand, the obvious stallcould just rile voters even more.

So I wonder… are stupid people only stupidif they don’t know they’re stupid?

If it were somehow possible to help themfigure out that they’re stupid, would that helpameliorate their stupidity, or wouldit drive them to distraction?

Speaking of driving, there wasa perfect group of test subjects inLangley City this weekend.

That the burnout artists who toreup Industrial Avenue in LangleyCity on Friday night are stupid iswithout doubt.

The question is whether or notthey know they are stupid… and particularly,how stupid they are.

I don’t just mean “oblivious.”It seems to me that the silly people who

blast residential neighbourhoods with theirracing cams are oblivious. They honestly donot realize that those aren’t looks of admira-tion that they get from the people whose ear-drums they shatter, whose nerves they wrack,whose sleeping babies they awaken… theyreally think everyone is envious of their shinytoys and their proclivity for annoyance.

They truly are oblivious to the fact that therecan be more to life than the size of their pis-tons and how much they can blow out theirtailpipes.

And oblivious is one or two shades short ofstupid – close, but not quite there.

For instance, doing a brake stand on a quietbackstreet with dozens of gawking fools egg-ing you on is oblivious.

Burning the rubber off your expensive tires,without any safety precautions, as a protestagainst the cancellation of an event which wascancelled in part because people were burningthe rubber off their tires, without safety pre-cautions… now, that’s stupid.

But even in that scenario, there are furtherdegrees of stupidity.

For instance, if stupidity were a martial art,I would award a 10th degree black belt toanyone not only stupid enough to be at anunsanctioned, illegal, unsafe burnout event,but who would admit to a newspaper reporterthere that he was not only a teacher, and notonly a teacher who teaches impressionableteenagers, but one who teaches them motorsports.

There’s got to be a better word than stupidfor someone like that.

And the most incredible partof it all – the part that I simplycannot wrap my head around– is that all of this is going onwhile people of a saner varietyare trying to do positive thingswith motor sports.

Although you have to wonderhow sane it is to try and create a

motor sport museum in the middle of a whollyincompatible nature park.

And you also have to wonder how sane it isto try and resurrect the Langley Good TimesCruise-In while a bunch of lunk-heads outback gladly admit that they have been one ofthe biggest problems in past years, and theyare vocal about their plans to continue provid-ing problems as long as there are rubber fumesfor them to breathe.

I was never a car nut as a kid.Maybe because I grew up on a farm and

drove a tractor in my pre-teen years, I wasable to get that silliness out of my system.

Some guys never grow out of it.That’s okay with me. Let them have their

fun, as long as they don’t destroy the roadsmy taxes pay for – and as long as they quitacting so gosh-darned stupid.

Premier Gordon Campbellhas expressed his arroganceand insensibility to the willof the people. Throughoutthe past few months wehave received a barrage ofmisinformation and gobble-degook that it’s going to begood for us. For whom, Iwonder?

Meanwhile, Gordo is sobusy trying to save the plan-et with his unproven theor-ies about “global warming.”

Has anyone considered thesmoke that comes from allthe forest fires?

That’s to say nothingabout the many volcanoesthat are erupting?

On page A22, a really nice picture of some fine folkswith donations to worthy food causes [Thoughtful, Sept.7, Langley Advance]: Langley meals on Wheels, Gateway ofHope, Langley food bank – all great causes. Kudos to Eastside Marios and Envision Financial.

But on A14 of the same edition, you have not very brightpeople who are going to waste good food [Eggs sacrificedfor a good cause] by tossing eggs off Township buildings.How can they justify this wanton waste of a valuable foodsource in the name of charity?

It makes absolutely no sense.Give the eggs to the food bank. Think of something else

am a council member for the Township ofLangley.

I had the opportunity of attending yourpublic meeting regarding our proposedoverpass crossing in the vicinity of 64thAvenue and Mufford Crescent, Aug. 30.

We at the Township of Langley havehad several open meetings with the publicregarding the 64th and Mufford overpass.

Langley is not an anti-farming commun-ity. We have a rural plan that has beenused as a template for many rural commun-ities. It recognizes a variety of farm usesand protects much of our 75-80 per centof Langley’s land in the Agricultural LandReserve.

Langley is concerned about safety atrail crossings. We have the support of ourpolice and fire departments for the initia-tive of a rail overpass for safety reasons.After much hard work and through negotia-tions with the province, TransLink, and therailways, we have negotiated the 64th and

Mufford rail overpass.We cannot stop the trains (many of which

are more than two kilometres long), norcan we force them to divert their routes. Anoverpass is our only option.

We are not merely pushing a road andoverpass through. We are expected to medi-ate strict conditions that will enhance thefarmland, with an improved drainage planfor the area and a road shape using theleast amount of farmland.

We are not promoting a new bypass routewith commercial/industrial businesses dot-ted along the route. I, for one, will not tol-erate this suggestion. The land will remainagricultural, and that is final.

The plan promotes an east-west highwayroute beneficial for future transportation.The Township of Langley has presented aplan that promotes a best-case scenario,given the challenge of the railway and ourcitizens’ safety.

Mufford overpass

New road will benefit farms

Dear Editor,I am saddened by my friend Donna

Passmore’s decision to resign as B.C.-widedirector of the Farmland Defence League[Passmore resigns, Sept. 10, LangleyAdvance].

However, with thousands of members andmany partner groups, FDL remains intactand actively committed to supporting theAgricultural Land Commission (ALC) inenforcing their mandate, regardless of prov-incial and local council shenanigans.

Many of us are frustrated at how themandate of the ALC, explicitly to protectfarmland, has been pushed aside for roadprojects and related development.

However, I have high hopes that the newALC chair can breathe the mandate backinto the ALC. ALC Chair Richard Bullockhas opened up some public dialogue whichwe have not had in the past 10 years.

In the case of the Mufford overpass, allpublic input, both local and provincial,has been a clear “no.” We don’t wantthe Mufford overpass as proposed; it is

clearly the first phase of a mega-project onfarmland, and as such, it is not good forLangley. The Mufford overpass is part ofdocumented proposals to connect a new216th Street freeway interchange acrossmore farmland in a north-south fashion. Ithas no real use for Langley as an east-westconnector.

ALC Chair Bullock has let the publicspeak, and we have said, “No.” ElusiveMufford proponents seem only to beimaginary and unsubstantiated claims froma council majority, but not in the publicmeetings.

I pray that Chair Richard Bullock willenforce ALC mandate, and not our provin-cial-council agenda.

The job that Donna Passmore did wasnot an easy one, and it did not have a greatdeal of gratification. I hope that, after wesee the ALC upholding its mandate, perhapsDonna will re-join FDL.

Folks searching for an organized show-and-shine on what would normally beLangley Good Times Cruise-In weekend,had to venture to the southernmost tip of208th Street to find one.

There, at the former Langley Speedwaysite in Campbell Valley Regional Park,vintage vehicles and hot rods were ondisplay during the speedway’s fourthannual reunion and car show.

In the past, the speedway reunion hadbeen held on the Sunday of Cruise-Inweekend.

With Langley City’s annual Cruise-Incancelled this year, the speedway’s carshow and memorabilia event took placeon Saturday, instead.

This year’s Cruise-In cancellation didn’tstop a few hot rod owners from takingpart in shenanigans, including burn-outsalong Industrial Avenue in downtownLangley, on Friday night. One of thereasons listed by organizers for puttingthis year’s Cruise-In on hiatus was safetyconcerns specific to unsanctioned gather-ings that resulted in burnouts on publicstreets.

Larry Olson – the formerspeedway’s official starterfrom 1969-77 and a memberof the Langley SpeedwayHistorical Society (LSHS)– said he was disappointedby the antics of the hotrod owners who failed torestraint themselves.

“Those few kill it for every-body,” he told the Advance atthe reunion. “Over the timewe’ve held our show, we’ve had zero tol-erance for any foolishness like that.”

The sounds reverberating through thespeedway site Saturday morning weren’tof squealing tires and roaring engines;rather, it was the low rumble of enginesas cars moved into the track’s infield,and late 1960s pop music, which carriedvisitors back to a time when the trackwas in its heyday.

LSHS president Murray Jones estimated300 cars showed up at the reunion, and“came and went” throughout the day.

“We had as many visitors that cameto look,” Jones said. “Saturday was our

only day of activity, as Sunday was reallyset aside in case Saturday was a rain-outor if we had campers [wanting] to linger.Some of the highlights were trophy pres-entations to the best race car and the bestshow car, which were done by starterLarry Olson, as well as the vocal duo oflocals Robyn and Ryleigh [Gillespie].”

One of the cars on display was AllanGibbons’ 1933 Ford modified stock racecar. Outfitted with a 350 GM performanceparts engine, TCI 700R4 transmission,and four-bar rear suspension with a rearanti-roll bar, the car was built from theground up as a tribute to Gibbons’ dad

passed away in 2005,served as track presidentof Langley Speedway(Langley Auto RacingAssociation) in 1968 and’69. He raced “The RedBaron,” a.k.a. “Lucky13,” in the modified stockclass against the likes of“Charlie Brown” Lloyd

Bellamy and “Snoopy” in the SopwithCamel, Doug Firth.

Allan Gibbons said he drives the car“every chance I get.”

“We’re all car guys and we’ve all racedstock cars all our lives,” Gibbons said.“This was [Larry’s] car back in the late’60s at Langley Speedway, so it justmakes me think of him.”

Gibbons built the car with help fromhis teenaged sons Aidan and Robert andwith support from his wife Kyna, family,and friends.

“I’m quite proud of it, but it’s morethe memories I’ve created with my boys,

doing it together,” Gibbons said. “Forthem it’s creating something to remembertheir grandfather by, and me, it’s for mydad.”

Gibbons said building a street-legal car that had “the flavour”of his dad’s old race car “was thething to do.”

He plans to bring the cherry-redFord to future Langley Speedwayreunion events.

“This car needs to be here everyyear,” he said. “It’s got a littlehistory behind it. This will be theone show that I do go to everysingle year.”

• • •While most records list 1965 as

the year of official opening, offici-ated by Noel Booth, it is generallyagreed that 1963 is the year thatracing began on the speedwaytrack. Construction began in 1962.

Langley Speedway was a hub ofactivity and a weekend staple forLangley families through the ’60s,’70s, and early ’80s.

Langley Speedway hostedNASCAR Winston West races in1971, ’72 and ’78, making it oneof only three sites in B.C. thathas hosted NASCAR races – theothers being Western Speedway in

Victoria and Westwood in Coquitlam.The track was closed to racing at the

end of the 1984 season.

The five-kilometre Walk

on the Wild Side eventwill be held on Oct. 3, tobenefit the Critter CareWildlife Society. The soci-ety takes in injured andorphaned animals, fromflying squirrels to bears,and nurses them back tohealth for re-release.

Volunteer Elaine Stirlingis organizing this year’swalk-a-thon. Last year’smade $6,800.

“We were quite pleasedwith that, so we’re going

to try and make it anannual event,” she said.

After a number of less-than-lengthypostings, the Langley school district’s topfinancial position has been filled.

J. David Green has been hired afterspending 30 years working in the publicand private sectors. His most recent jobwas with the Nanaimo-Ladysmith SchoolDistrict, where he has worked since 2002as a secretary-treasurer.

Green is a chartered accountant, andis president of the B.C. Association ofSchool Business Officials.

“We are verypleased to have Mr.Green as our corpor-ate officer and chieffinancial officer,”said school boardChair Joan Bech.

Green will take uphis duties later this fall.

The last permanent secretary-treasurerwas Wayne Braun, who stayed for justfour months in late 2009.

Interim secretary-treasurer DaveGreenan stayed one day past his retire-ment to help see the district through aspecial budget meeting in June.

Teachers also welcomed the report.“The Auditor General’s Report clearly validates the

concerns that teachers, parents and others in the com-munity have been raising over the past year,” saidLangley Teachers Association president Susan Fonseca.

She said putting the district’s finances back in orderis one issue, but also put the blame on the province fornot providing enough funding.

A Langley teen was among thosewho swung their hips for hours andultimately won a prize.

It is hard for most to fathom swinging ahula hoop for more than a few minutes.

But recently, Willowbrook ShoppingCentre held a competition that extendedbeyond mall hours – with the top twoadult contestants surpassing the five- andsix-hour marks.

Willowbrook held what was called anEndurance Hooping Competition at theend of August that drew out 57 contest-ants from age five to senior.

“The competition was amazing,” saidMeghan McCrea, marketing director forWillowbrook.

“One young girl calmly read two bookswhile hooping. Another young boy swungthe hula hoop around his waist at warpspeed. Other contestants dance to themusic as they hooped away.”

The new competition – held in themall’s centre court – was open to four agecategories: children (four to 12 years old),teens (13-18), adults (19-64), and seniors(65 years and older). Everyone was com-peting for $250 Willowbrook gift cards.

“All in all, the event was a great wayto bring the community together andcelebrate the end of summer with somehip-shaking fun,” said McCrea, addingthat contestants lasted much longer thanorganizers had expected.

The winners, those who continuedwithout any washroom, food or bever-age breaks, including 10-year-old KaitlynGobillot of Surrey, the winner of the chil-dren’s category, for hooping three hours,32 minutes, and 26 seconds (3:32:26).

In the teen category, the prize went to15-year-old Lynnda Kim, of Langley, whohooped for 2:59:00.

Evelyn Baillie, a 65-year-old fromSurrey, won the senior’s category, hoop-ing 0:33:08.

“The shopping centre decided to amendthe rules and award two prizes for theadult category, as at mall closing time thelast two contestants were still hooping,”McCrea said.

June Benedict, a 63-year-old ofAbbotsford, hooped for 6:30:01, while herclosest competitor, 22-year-old ChantelleBowles, of Langley, recorded a time of5:26:59.

A drunk driver who left the scene ofa crash, with his airbags inflated, wascaught by Langley RCMP just before mid-night Saturday.

The driver had hit a car in the south-bound lanes of the Golden Ears Bridge.

The driver who had been hit called theLangley RCMP with a description of thefleeing car, and a licence plate number.

The car was found nearby in a parkinglot in the 9700 block of 197B Street, saidRCMP Cpl. Holly Marks.

A breathalyzer test held at the RCMPheadquarters found that the 33-year-old

Surrey man had twice the legal blood-alcohol content. The driver will appear inSurrey Provincial Court on Dec. 9.

That was not the last time a drunk driv-er tangled with RCMP on the weekend.

On Sunday at 5:30 p.m., a three-vehiclecrash at 44th Avenue and 200th Streetsent three people to the hospital withnon-life threatening injuries, Marks said.

One driver, a 30-year-old Langley resi-dent, was arrested for impaired driving,and refused to blow into the breathalyzer.He now faces an impaired driving chargeand a charge of refusing to provide abreath sample.

I got up Sunday morning at 6 a.m. andfrantically checked my email, hopingthere was a message from our teamcaptain or trainer, with the magic word“cancelled.”

No luck. The rain was drumming likea manic metalhead in mid-solo, and itwould do that all day. All six and a halfhours that the Cops for Cancer Tour deValley team would hold its final – andlongest – training ride.

This was the big one, the century ride.And by “century” I mean 100 miles, not100 kilometres. Trainer/RCMP sergeant/professional cycle torturer Tim Anctil hadthoughtfully created an almost entirelyflat route through the Sumas Prairie,Chilliwack, and Harrison Hot Springs.So at least we wouldn’t be going up ordown hills in the deluge.

We had an excellent turnout, despitethe weather. Almost every rider wasthere, and of those who weren’t, at leasttwo were deathly ill. Strep throat doesnot provide extra oomph to a long bikeride.

We were damp before we started, wewere soaked after half an hour and thefirst dozen klicks.

Yet the mood was jubilant.Const. Les Betker, from Boston Bar,

brought duck call whistles for severalriders.

When riders blew them, they drewlooks from the few pedestrians or other

cyclists who were braving the weather(not to mention freaking out at least oneactual duck).

In south Chilliwack, we found our-selves riding part of the same route as abike race. We breezed past one check-point, with a volunteer staring at us,wondering if we were going the wrongway.

We also shared stories about our fund-raising efforts, and about the upcomingtour.

As one of the ride newbies, I’ve beenasking quite a few questions.

Jason Charles, a sheriff who worksin the Surrey Courthouse, told me hefound himself choking up last year whenchildren at one school gave the riderscrayon-drawn thank you cards.

For ride captain Ken Usipiuk, it’salways the visits to the schools wherejunior team members – children withcancer – attended that get him mistyeyed.

“The ones that may have lost theirbattle,” he said.

Even when the rain is pounding down,and teeth are chattering, there’s a goodreason to keep going.

By the end of the ride, we may havebeen a bit subdued – until the parking lotcame into view, and we let out shouts oftriumph. We’d completed a day of ridingthat was worse than anything the actualTour de Valley will throw at us.

A Township of Langley outdoorsinitiative promotes wellness.

A full day of physical activity,stunning local scenery, and social-izing with others: for some people,hiking and snowshoeing aren’tjust activities, they are a chance toenhance wellness and forge friend-ships.

For many years, the Township ofLangley has been offering programsthat give people a chance to enjoythe great outdoors in the company ofothers.

Monday marked the startof a new season of hikingexcursions that will morphinto snowshoeing exped-itions when winter arrives.

Long-time participantsJudie Steeves and AnnLibby are eager to start thenew season.

They also hope newcom-ers interested in trying hik-ing and snowshoeing willsign on and discover a new passion.

Whether walking on the groundor the snow, the women say it is anexcellent way to stay in shape, clearthe mind, and meet new friends.

“We love to get out there andpound away,” Steeves said.

“Yes we get wet, yes we getmuddy, but it’s a very friendlybunch and the program is excellent.Anybody new who comes out willnot be left on their own. There’s alot of camaraderie.”

Two levels of hiking and snow-shoeing are offered, said Townshiprecreation leader Alex Thompson.

Hiking and Snowshoeing LevelOne provides an experience for thosenew to outdoor recreation.

Day trips take place every Monday(they started Sept. 13) until Dec. 13,and vary from easy walking to mod-erate hiking or snowshoeing.

“We will be travelling a distanceof five to eight kilometres each trip,with elevation gains of up to 1,300feet,” Thompson explained.

Those who are experienced orlooking for more of a challenge canjoin the Level 2 program.

Daytrips take place everyWednesday (they started Sept. 8)until Dec. 15, and the hikes andsnowshoeing trips are rated easy todifficult.

Participants will travel sevento 14 kilometres in distance, andexpeditions may involve elevationsgain of up to 1,495 feet, Thompson

explained.“For Level 2, participants should

be in good physical condition andcome prepared with hiking equip-ment,” she said.

A daypack, rain gear, and properfootwear are needed for the hikes,and arrangements can be made tooutfit those who are without snow-shoes.

Trips run from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30p.m. for both levels, and the cost foreach session is $34.

Transportation from theAldergrove Kinsmen CommunityCentre or the W.C. Blair RecreationCentre is included, along withleadership for each trip.

For Libby, snowshoeing was some-thing she did as a teenager in GirlGuides. She was eager to try it again.

But planning trips and gettingto and from potential destinationswas a hassle. That’s why she waspleased to sign up for the local pro-gram.

“I love the peacefulness of beingout in the woods, but my friendsand I didn’t want to organize trips ordrive there ourselves. Plus, we couldalways talk ourselves out of it,”Libby laughed.

“But this way, there is nothingnicer than having someone drive youhome so you can relax and reflect onthe day. And weather is not a deter-rent.”

Accredited leaders who are know-ledgeable, experienced, and have

safety and first-aid training, overseethe group. And another brings upthe rear, ensuring hikers stay togeth-er and no one gets left behind.

While the trips can be challenging,Libby and Steeves, who are bothretired, say hiking and snowshoeingare great ways to stay active physic-ally and socially.

“People may wonder, ‘Can Ido it? Am I too old? Am I not fitenough?’ but we manage becausewe are together and encourage oneanother,” Libby said. “There is a lotof enthusiasm.”

There are “humongous spin-offs”from it, too, said Steeves.

While those in the program startoff making regular weekly treks toregional parks, mountains, lakes,and canyons within the LowerMainland, bonds quickly form andsoon new friends are hiking, camp-ing, and vacationing on their own.

“The friendships that havestemmed from this are incredible,”Steeves said, encouraging thosewho enjoy the great outdoors andmay be going for long walks on theirown, or participating in activitiessuch as pole-walking to give hikingand snowshoeing a try.

“It is more than just fitness: it iswellness,” said Libby.

Ask the Langley Chiefs’coaches and they’ll tell you:there were few moral victoriesto pull from their team’s BritishColumbia Hockey League homeopener Saturday at the LangleyEvents Centre (LEC).

Sure, the Chiefs erased third-period deficits of 2-0 and 3-2 toearn an overtime point in frontof 2,907 fans at the LEC.

But the bottom line is, theChiefs lost 4-3 in OT to the visit-ing Surrey Eagles.

Head coach Harvey Smyldidn’t like what he saw.

“I thought we were easy toplay against, and I thought wewere poor in a lot of areas,”Smyl said. “I thought we didn’tplay well, whatsoever. Certainguys did good things at timesand poor things at times. Ourolder leaders need to be betterthan they were.”

Associate coach Barry Wolffsaid the setback left a somewhatbitter taste.

“It was definitely great to getthe point, but we didn’t playeven close to our potential,”Wolff said. “Our goals are prettyhigh. We think we have a prettygood team this year.”

The Eagles scored once in firstperiod and again in the middlestanza to carry a 2-0 lead intofinal frame.

The Chiefs’ Josh Myers playedlike a man possessed early in thethird period to spark his team’scomeback bid.

Myers deftly tipped in theChiefs’ first goal at the 4:11mark.

Less than two minutes later, hetied the game on a goal-mouthscramble.

Surrey forward BradleyMcGowan quashed the Chiefs’momentum when he scored on apowerplay to restore the Eagles’lead at the 11:01 mark of theperiod.

Then, the Chiefs’ Matthew Iustied the game at3-3, after gettinga stick on Myers’shot with 3:57 toplay in regulationtime.

Both teams hadchances to scorethe winner dur-ing an entertaining final three-minutes-and-change of regula-tion time, but Chiefs goaltenderWyatt Galley and his counterpartat the other end of the ice,Surrey’s Vinny Lessard, weresharp in sending the game into

overtime.Very early in the extra ses-

sion, Surrey captain Tyler Morleybroke in alone from centre iceand beat Galley at the 25 secondmark to lift the Eagles to a 4-3victory.

Galley stopped 40of 43 shots in a 5-3Chiefs victory.

“He was real goodfor us,” Wolff said, of Galley.“Two points is two points, espe-cially this time of the year whenthings are a little scrambly.”

Galley was particularly sharpin an opening period in whichthe Chiefs were outshot 23-9.

Three of the Chiefs’ nine open-ing period shots entered theSurrey net. Of the barrage ofpucks fired Galley’s way, onlyone eluded him.

Defenceman Ryan Bakkengave the Chiefs huge momentumwhen, on a Langley powerplay,he beat Lessard with a second togo in the first period.

The Chiefs settled down defen-sively after the wild and woollyfirst frame, holding the Eaglesto 10 shots in the second periodand 10 more in the final stanza.

The Eagles’ McGowan scoredon a powerplay to narrow thedeficit to 3-2 at the 7:36 mark ofthe second period.

Chiefs’ defenceman KevinTuohy’s powerplay goal with1:22 remaining in the periodrestored Langley’s two-goal lead.

Tuohy’s goal stood up as thegame winner.

The third period was scorelessfor more than 16 minutes, beforeSurrey’s Jeff Vanderlugt madethings interesting by scoring ona powerplay with 3:15 remainingin regulation.

Surrey’s comeback attemptended with 41 seconds to play,when Chiefs defenceman TimDaly deposited the puck into theempty net, with Lessard pulledfor the extra attacker.

depth at the forward position byacquiring Darnell Dyck in a dealwith the Okotoks Oilers of theAlberta Junior Hockey League.

To make the deal, the Chiefshad to part ways with versatiledefenceman Colten Hayes.

Hayes spent one season inLangley, splitting time betweendefence and at forward.

With recent moves that theChiefs have made, bringing inIus and MikeTebbutt,the clubwanted toadd anotherplaymakerand did sowith Dyck.

Addingsomeintrigue tothe story isthe fact thatDyck wasa one-timeChiefs stickboy.

“Darnell is a player who willadd some more size to our for-ward corps and at this time itwas another piece to the puzzlein trying to put the best teampossible on the ice,” said Smyl,who was careful not to placeexpectations on his new addition.

Next up, the Chiefs travel toPrince George Friday to takeon the Spruce Kings, and visitQuesnel Saturday for a date withthe Millionaires.

I’m from the south.I was born and raised in

Alexandria, La.As a guy who has always been

pretty athletic, I began playingfootball and ran track in highschool.

I did so well at that level thatI was named an all-district widereceiver and free safety and wasalso an honourable mention placekicker in my senior year.

When I graduated from highschool, I decided that attendingcollege at Mississippi’s AlcornState University would give methe best opportunity to get apost-secondary education, whilerealizing my dream to playfootball at the next level.

After four years with theBraves, I seized the chance to

head north to Canada to jointhe Lions as a rookie in theirreceiving corps.

I had a great time in my firstseason, which motivated me totrain even harder when I wentback home during the wintermonths, in addition to workingas a substitute teacher and trackcoach at my former high schoolwhile mentoring local kids as partof Alexandria’s Boys and GirlsClub.

Now that I’m in my secondseason, I still can’t believe that Iget to come to work every day toplay the game I love.

Nothing would makeme happier than to win achampionship with this team.

Win or lose, the guys inour locker room are a closegroup, and I’m proud of our

accomplishments on and off thefield.

As a kid who dreamed ofbeing a professional athletefrom a young age, I know whatit’s like to look to others forinspiration. For that reason, Ilove taking part in the Lions’community efforts during theseason, particularly the club’sannual Timbits Camp.

I feel proud knowing that Icould be teaching football basicsand the importance of beingactive to a young kid who oneday could use his or her athleticability to secure a universityscholarship and a bright future.

As a guy who comes from asmall town, I know that it’s up tothe local community to invest intheir kids in order to ensure theysucceed in life.

The Langley FC Strikers won three times and tied once atLangley’s annual Labour Day soccer tournament last weekend.

The Fort Langley-basedK4 midget men’s squadsplashed to silver at thenationals in Regina.

The Fort Langley CanoeClub’s sprint athletes willlook back on the 2010summer season as one toremember.

This year marks thefirst time a boys’ teamracing in Fort LangleyCanoe Club colours hasstood on the podium atthe Canadian nationalchampionships, a four-day

regatta which was held onWascana Lake in Regina.

In particular, the FLCCboys excelled.

The local group camehome with the silvermedal in the highly com-

petitive midget men’s1000-metre K4 race.

There were other fineperformances, particularlyin the 6000m race wherefive FLCC athletes finishedin the top 20.

“I was really pleasedwith the way we started.We really got after it andhad lots of ball pressureand it was a great goal tofinish,” TWU head coachGraham Roxburgh said. “Iwas also pleased that inthe second half we wereable to respond well after atough situation.”

Shortly after halftimethe game was delayeddue to a scary situationinvolving rookie TrinityWestern defender JenniferCastillo. After a Dinosfree kick went wide ofthe Spartans’ net, Castillofell to the ground, seem-ingly untouched, and wasattended by training staff.

She was taken off thepitch via ambulance.

TWU sports informa-tion director Scott Stewartsaid Castillo fainted on thefield, and flew home lateSunday. He said she willbe reevaluated this week.

The Spartans willreturn home to host theUniversity of ReginaCougars and the Universityof Manitoba Bisons thisweekend.
