Welcome

Langley Park Golf Club, in Beckenham Kent, is a haven of peace and tranquillity which first

opened for play in 1910.

Steeped in history, Langley Park was originally designed by five-time Open Champion, John Henry Taylor.

The course has been used as a Regional Open qualifier on numerous occasions and is well known for its exceptional greens. There is something to interest golfers at all levels, with each hole offering its own unique challenge.

The golf course, though, is just one of the many facilities that await you. Our clubhouse offers the perfect place to relax with partners, friends and family before or after enjoying a round of golf.

The Pro Shop stocks a full range of equipment and also has clubs, trolleys and buggies for hire; while you’re guaranteed a warm welcome from our club Professional, Paul Sherman and his team.

The outstanding facilities lend themselves easily as an ideal venue for a wide range of functions including anniversary and birthday celebrations, wedding receptions and business meetings.

History

Some names now legendary in the world of golf are forever linked with Langley Park golf course.

With his achievements forever preserved in the World Golf Hall of Fame, what better person to be charged with crafting a golfing masterpiece than John Henry Taylor.

A member of the fabled Great Triumvirate, J.H. Taylor was a five-time winner of the Open Championship, as well as adding The French and German Opens to his illustrious career achievements.

While Taylor was a driving force in the formation of the Professional Golfers’ Association in Britain, he also spent many of the years following his playing career

designing and remodelling golf courses around Britain.

Langley Park was one of those courses. Taylor himself said “the ground lends itself very well to the game. I have no hesitation in saying that the course will afford an excellent test of golf”. Even today it still maintains many of the original designs J.H.Taylor implemented.

Formerly part of the Goodhart Estate, it was originally built as a parkland site and still retains much of the original flat terrain and is dominated by maturing oak trees.

With over 100 years of history, the Club has produced many fine golfers throughout the years including, Roger Chapman, winner of

the 2012 US Senior PGA Championship and the 2012 US Senior Open Championship, and, most notably, Henry Cotton.

No history of Langley Park would be complete without a mention of the name Cotton, the professional golfer here from 1926 to 1933. After seven years with the Club he won his first Open Championship the following year. He added two more to his career tally before being inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1980.

The Club proudly celebrated its centenary in 2010 with a number of special events in the Clubhouse enjoyed by all.


About the Course

Our 18 hole parkland course is set in 120 acres and contains only one par 5 from the White Tees

with a tough par of 69. It is a true test of golf.

Over the years the course has been redesigned several times, often dictated by nature or technology. In between the major alterations, minor adjustments are constantly being made.

The fairways thread through flat, wooded parkland and the course is noted for its excellent greens and its long par fours, eight of which are over 400 yards. The par-three 18th has a picturesque lake that stretches almost from tee to green.

Though the course appears to be flat, this is by no means true, as the ground is consistently rising and falling in just the gentle folds and undulations that a good course needs, with all the greens containing “borrows” in some degree.

The constant ambition is to better ourselves and to invest in our future with extensive drainage and irrigation work being carried out over the years. Water is supplied from our own subterranean source, making our course playable all year round.


About the Course Continued

The hard work of our full-time green-keeping staff and substantial investment in acquiring the very best equipment to help them perform their task, has reaped its rewards.

Whilst those enjoying a good day on the Greens are likely to prosper, there are a number of testing holes that examine all parts of one’s game.

The par 4 seventh, for example, is stroke index 1 from the White Tees for good reason. At 446 yards it requires a long accurate drive round a left-hand dog-leg before dealing with two treacherous bunkers in front of the green.

Water comes into play on several holes via a number of strategically placed ditches and streams, while the bunkering makes the course a challenge for golfers of all abilities.

Our signature hole is the picturesque 18th, with views over the lake where a par to finish with is most welcome.

Our course is also home to many plant and animal species, with mature trees stretching throughout. Small mammals, birds and exotic fish call our course home and offer an enjoyable distraction during your round of golf.


Course Guide

If you have never played at Langley Park Golf Club before you are in for a treat. Make the most of your trip by

learning about some of the pitfalls that lie in wait and how to avoid them as you follow our hole-by-hole tour.

Hole 1, 416 yards, par 4A tough opening hole, requiring a long straight drive slightly left of centre to be able to see the green with your approach. The second shot is ever so slightly up hill to a raised green, so take more club!

Hole 2, 364 yards, par 4A narrow undulating fairway, with out of bounds lurking on the left and trees on the right, all ready to catch an errant drive. Accuracy is at a premium from the tee, with a green that falls away for your 2nd shot. Take a par and move on.

Hole 3, 440 yards, par 4A long tough par 4, which at 440 yards from the Whites will need two good shots, even from the best of players. Watch out for the stream that lies 100 yards short of the green which will catch a miss-hit second shot. An undulating green awaits you with several subtle breaks. Par is a great score!

Hole 4, 448 yards, par 4A long par four fraught with danger. The right hand bunker off the tee will catch the big hitters, but several bunkers around the green await even the slightest miss-hit second. Although the green appears quite simple, the slope from back to front can catch you out. Stroke Index 1 on the Red card.

Hole 5, 196 yards, par 3The first of the four par 3’s and definitely the hardest! Measuring at just under 200yards from the competition tees with a huge tier in the middle of the green, it makes club selection tricky. Take care to note the pin position before hitting your tee shot for the best chance of a par.

Hole 6, 376 yards, par 4A slight dogleg from left to right and one of the shorter par 4’s - that’s not to say it’s an easy one! Several bunkers on both sides of the fairway, and more around the green, means that accuracy more than distance may be your best plan here.

Hole 7, 446 yards, par 4Stroke index 1 on the White/Yellow card, this is a dogleg from right to left, with several large oak trees ready to catch anyone trying to cut the corner. The long second shot playing slightly uphill, needs plenty of club to avoid the bunkers short of the green, but anything past the pin means a 3 putt is likely.

Hole 8, 411 yards, par 4A straightforward looking par 4 but a miss-hit drive may fail to clear the grassy mounds, and ditches flank both sides of the fairway leading to a well bunkered green that slopes severely from left to right. The second shot into this green generally plays a club shorter than the yardage suggests.

Hole 9, 367 yards, par 4One of the shorter par 4’s on the course but also one of the narrowest. A slight dogleg from left to right, playing uphill to a long and undulating green. Club selection is vital for your approach if you are to make par.

Hole 10, 158 yards, par 3One of the Clubs signature holes, a short unassuming par 3, measuring 158 yards from the furthest tee, but the green is raised and slopes severely from right to left. You must carry your shot all the way to the green from the tee, or it will be gathered by the valley short of the green or fall into one of the deep bunkers.

Hole 11, 341 yards, par 4The shortest par 4 on the course but certainly, the tightest! With large conifers lurking on both sides of the fairway 200 yards from the tee, the smart play is to hit a fairway wood or long iron to lay up, leaving a short iron to the green. It’s a birdie chance but surrounded by danger. Par is a good score.

Hole 12, 459 yards, par 4Long and arrow straight, the 12th is the longest par 4 at 459 yards from the Whites. The undulating fairway can make your second shot tricky and a green sloping in several directions means that a 2 putt is welcome.

Hole 13, 163 yards, par 3A tricky par 3 with a long narrow green and bunkers short and on both sides. Hitting the green is a must if you re to achieve your par. Watch out for the subtle borrows in the green – they are bigger than they look.

Hole 14, 472 yards, par 5From the Whites this is the only par 5 on the course. Longer hitters can certainly reach in two shots, but keeping the ball in play is vital. The ideal line from the tee is over the corner of the gorse, just right of centre, with a second shot to a narrow well protected green. Anyone laying-up must avoid the deep fairway bunker on the right.

Hole 15, 446 yards, par 4A tough driving hole that ideally requires a slight fade. The second shot is downhill so will always play a club shorter. Make sure you avoid the grass bunkers that lie short of the green as these are not visible from the fairway.


Hole 16, 367 yards, par 4A slight dogleg right, surrounded by trees and gorse. The ideal line off the tee is straight at the conifer on the left edge of the fairway. Longer hitters may cut the corner by hitting over the copse, but beware of the ditch crossing the fairway that may catch a long drive. The green slopes considerably from back to front, so keep the ball below the flag.

Hole 17, 435 yards, par 4One of the toughest tee shots on the course, playing through a funnel of trees onto a generous fairway. There is more room left than you think, as anything right will be caught up in the ditch or even find the out of bounds. A fairly flat green awaits your approach but the four well placed bunkers need to be avoided.

Hole 18, 162 yards, par 3A pretty hole to finish but also a potential card-wrecker! Hit over the lake to the green, but also avoid the stream which runs across the front and to the left. Take a par and walk off with a smile!

Becoming a Member

Langley Park Golf Club offers a variety of membership categories to suit all ages and standards.

Our seven-day memberships allow unlimited use of the course and our clubhouse, the opportunity to enter Club competitions and the opportunity to maintain an official handicap.

Similar five-day membership opportunities exist for those not wishing to play at weekends. We have also recently introduced a 6-day membership for the weekday player that also wants to play on Sunday.

We recognise the future of our great game is in the hands of our junior golfers and offer competitive membership rates to younger players and full-time students.

Anyone new to golf will also find we represent an ideal choice, through our Academy Programme, using our talented PGA-qualified teaching team who are always on hand to offer instruction and support.

Members at Langley Park enjoy a full programme of golf throughout the year. There are

fixtures against other clubs, together with much competition to be enjoyed alongside fellow members, some for silverware and some of a more social nature.

Regular roll-up contests are always well supported and keenly fought, ensuring that all our members have the competitive golf they demand.

MenThis is a very busy and vibrant section that organises qualifying and knockout competitions throughout the year.

Mens’ teams play in many friendlies and knockout competitions which run throughout the year.

The LPGC men enter teams into the South East Group matches, competing in various knockout competitions which are in handicap order ranging from scratch to 18 +.

While there is a keen focus on competitive golf, with this being a likely contributory factor as to why we have competed so well in the County’s team competitions, balance is always a good thing. We provide regular social golf where the only thing on offer is renewing friendships and perhaps a drink in the bar afterwards for the winner.

LadiesThe Ladies section is a very friendly group who enjoy each other’s company as much as a good game of golf. It is an active section that is run by a committee, headed by the

Ladies’ Captain. We cater for the serious golfer with weekly medals and qualifying Stablefords, while we also have fun competitions for those less interested in their handicaps.

Lady members enter many external Kent County Ladies Golf Association (KCLGA) and national competitions, both at an individual and team level. This gives members the opportunity to play different courses and meet other like-minded golfers.

We hold competitions with local clubs at all handicap levels and there are considerable

opportunities for mixed golf. Lady Members also participate in regional knock-outs such as the Bradley Cooke and Pearson Trophy.

Lady golfers interested in joining this section have the opportunity to experience a taster session at our 7 @ 7 evenings. See the website for full details.

Group coaching specifically aimed at ladies is also available.

VeteransThe Club has a large and very lively bunch of Veteran or Senior Golfers consisting of playing and non-playing members aged 50+, however we always have room for more.

The section enters a team of 12 players in the Society of Kent Veterans League Division Two and were champions in 2010 and 2011. Matches are played on a home and away basis against local clubs with the winners of the league then competing against the winners of the other Kent leagues in the finals.

Playing Categories Continued

Membership of the affectionately named ‘Ancient Britons’ section is open to Langley Park members that are at least 60 years old, playing 12 friendly matches a year against local clubs on a home and away basis.

The Langley Park Veterans ‘Team Open’ is held in May when we entertain 32 teams from Kent and the surrounding counties, consisting of three members from the visiting clubs with one Langley Park veteran in each team.

The Veterans Section hold regular ‘roll-ups’ on Monday’s and Wednesday’s and on Friday’s between March and September, there is a ‘roll-up’ open to all members of the Veterans section. The best five scores are calculated over these months and the winner receives ‘The Dennis Arnold Trophy’.

The highlights of the veterans’ year is the annual dinner held in either March or April, and is always a great occasion.

JuniorsWe have a very healthy junior section, aged up to 18 years. Our PGA professional coaching staff can offer structured weekly lessons for children of all abilities. In addition, we offer group tuition programmes during the school holidays.

Our junior teams take part in local and national leagues, and we have a dedicated and fully certified team of junior organisers.

Many of our young golfers go on to great success in the golfing world, with some currently competing on Professional Tours.

ArtisansMany Artisan Golf Clubs were formed across the UK in the early to middle 1900’s with the intention of allowing the whole community access to play golf. The concept is that in return for reduced membership, the Artisans carry out work on the course, such as raking bunkers and filling divots. Artisans have access to the course seven days a week at restricted times.

The Artisans have their own dedicated clubhouse room and also have EGU status of their own separate from the main club. Membership of this section is limited to 40 and they compete both in their own internal competitions and enjoy matches against other Artisan clubs across Kent, Surrey and Sussex.


The Clubhouse

Our clubhouse has recently been refurbished to the highest standard, now offering

superb facilities for those who have just enjoyed a game of golf or those members wishing to book the facilities for a social function.

The patio area offers one of the most idyllic settings of any golf club in Kent, where you can enjoy a drink and a snack whilst watching players negotiate the treacherous par three, 18th hole.

Meanwhile, the extensive lounge area, overlooking the lake and fountain, is a sanctuary of relaxation suitable for any occasion.

Our in-house caterers offer food for all occasions ranging from informal buffets to formal dinners, while the Catering Manager is always available to discuss menus for any specific needs.

The bar is well stocked with exciting wines and beers that are competitively priced and our friendly and professional staff are always on hand to assist you with your choices.

Flat screen TVs showing sports are available in the bar and lounge, so all the year’s major sporting events can be enjoyed in comfort in the company of fellow members creating an atmosphere that is hard to match.

Our approachable and efficient staff provide first-class customer service and a meticulous attention to detail that will make your visit to Langley Park one you will remember for all the right reasons.


Social Activities

Langley Park is not just a place to come and enjoy an excellent round of golf. It has a lively social

side with numerous events, organised by our dedicated Social Committee, throughout the year.

Live bands and singers always prove to be very popular, while our regular quiz nights always go down a treat.

Various themed dining evenings are also enjoyed, as members like to take every opportunity to enjoy the excellent catering on offer at Langley Park.

Significant dates in the calendar are also celebrated with gusto. Our festive dinners are always warmly welcomed but the highlights of our social calendar are the Summer Ball and the New Year’s Eve celebration.


Our Pro Shop

Langley Park’s class AA PGA Club Professional is Paul Sherman. He joined the club from Ashford Golf

Club, where he had been attached since a junior member aged 10. He turned professional in 1992, working his way to Head Professional, succeeding his father in 2009.

He has played on several Professional tours including the PGA European and Challenge Tours, He has won The Southern Professional Championship twice, over 50 Pro-Am events, holds 6 course records and has achieved 7 holes in one.

Paul is a member of The Foremost buying group, hosting a well-stocked shop, open seven days a week, with many of the leading brands such as Callaway, Titleist, Ping and Yonex, apparel from Oscar Jacobson, Under Armour, Footjoy with crested clothing from Pro Quip and Oscar Jacobson. There is also a large range of footwear from Footjoy and Ecco with waterproof clothing from Galvin Green and Pro Quip.

He is also an authorised custom fit centre for all of the hardware brands mentioned, providing professional, expert advice to ensure you purchase the ideal set of clubs to match your individual game. A full club repair service is available from re-gripping, re-shafting to loft and lie alterations.


Tuition

The Professional PGA team at Langley Park are dedicated to improving your game and helping

you achieve all your goals in golf. Daily lessons are available on both an individual basis or as a group.

Our recently installed dry rainge means tuition is available no matter what the weather and there is also an indoor swing studio using all the very latest video technology for instant feedback which can then be emailed to your personal email along with handy tips, drills and reminders.

We also have a Skytrak golf simulator, which can be used for practice or to play some of the world’s greatest courses without being exposed to the elements.


Custom Fitting

There has been a growing realisation in recent times that golfing tuition ought to go hand-

in-hand with equipment that allows each player to make the absolute utmost of whatever level of natural talent they possess.

Clubs merely bought off the shelf will be of a standard specification but unfortunately golfers are not, coming in all shapes and sizes.

The reality is that a golfer could have a perfectly acceptable technique but still be held back because their clubs are not entirely suitable to their swing.

This is where custom fitting comes in, a relatively new phenomenon that allows a set of clubs to be built to marry with each golfer’s individual physique and swing characteristics.

Custom fitting is something that we take seriously here at Langley Park and we pride ourselves in what we do. We offer a full and extensive range of products all available for custom fitting.

This service costs less than you think and can bring about a dramatic improvement in ball striking.

Even the top touring professionals struggle to maintain the same fundamentally sound swing characteristics every time, so it is a lot to ask for the average golfer to do likewise.

Customising the clubs to place the golfer in the ideal position for their physical characteristics will train the golfer to address the ball with the correct posture and swing along the ideal swing plane, which all adds up to the correct impact position and better scores.

With the use of The Skytrak launch monitor, we are now able to give you instant feedback on every shot you hit, this state of the art technology records club head speed, ball speed, ball spin but more importantly how far the ball carries and rolls.

The new custom fit equipment now allows us to adjust shaft weight, flex, loft, kick point to help you achieve maximum distance and accuracy without altering technique.


Societies

Golf societies can expect an exhilarating day out at Langley Park Golf Club. We are a popular

venue all year round and see groups returning year after year. Our scheduled society days are on Wednesday and Thursday, however, other days can be arranged on request.

We can cater for small or large groups and offer a wide range of golf packages from 18, 27 or 36 holes of golf.

Choose from an individually priced menu containing a number of choices depending on the time of day you wish to play.

The early birds can have coffee with either a full English breakfast or a bacon baguette, while Ploughman’s, ham, egg and chips or two rounds of sandwiches are available on the lunch menu.

We would recommend, however, you stay for dinner to see why our kitchen has such an enviable reputation with our delicious choice of one, two or three-course set meals available.

Prices are very reasonable and we guarantee you and your group a day to remember.

A specially designed ‘blended scorecard’ is now available for societies to use. The card changes the course to a par 72 and includes five par 5’s off the yellow tees. This will help players to score more easily and to enjoy the course more.


Open Competitions

Langley Park is an historic golf club with a rich heritage dating back to the founding of our Club in 1910.

We know we have something special here and nothing gives us greater pleasure than to share the enjoyment of our magnificent course with people who may not have experienced it before.

One of the ways in which we can do this is by staging a number of open competitions throughout the year aimed at golfers from all walks of life and abilities.

Throughout the month of August our Club host a number of events including the Ladies Open.

The Mixed Team Open is the pinnacle of our Open tournaments and is also held in August, with couples and teams of four competing in the 18-hole better-ball stableford competition.

LPGC also runs Pro-Am’s every other year.

Visitors

Visitors are always welcome at Langley Park where we endeavour to provide a warm welcome and

a day out to remember. You do not have to be a golfer to be able to spend an enjoyable time with us.

You will find the course provides an interesting challenge for golfers of all abilities. The atmosphere on course is serene with a sense of tranquility, despite its close proximity to the centre of London.

The well-stocked Pro Shop will allow you to stock up before your round or to browse the wide range of golf equipment and clothing. The staff can arrange for one-on-one tuition should you wish to brush up your skills before play. Golf trolleys and electric buggies are available, although booking in advance is advisable.

Visitor green fees are discounted on certain days and twilight rates are available during the summer months. Members’ guests enjoy reduced price green fees for their rounds.

After the game, head to the clubhouse where you can relax with a drink or snack in the comfortable lounge or on the patio area, and view the stunning course as players negotiate the 18th.

Please take a moment to visit our website and read our rules on dress code to ensure your visit runs as smoothly as possible. A minimum standard of smart casual dress is required in all areas of the clubhouse at all times. The club website will provide you with all the information you need to know concerning your visit and has full details of current green fee rates.


Fine Dining

Langley Park is as proud of the hospitality it offers as it is of its magnificent course and wonderful

facilities.

Members and guests alike are able to enjoy a wide selection of food throughout the day seven days a week. Our restaurant offers outstanding choice at very reasonable prices, whether it’s a snack or three course meal.

The splendid venue is where our golfing teams host their rivals from other clubs and where the fierce but good-natured competition on the course quickly gives way to post-match banter and where long-standing friendships are struck or rekindled.

Sunday is always eagerly anticipated by the members with a carvery lunch available each week. This has proved incredibly popular and booking is advisable.

On other days, there are a host of tempting meals available on the chef’s special board or if time is at a premium and you just want a quick but filling snack, then these are available from our newly designed snack menu.

Whether you are organising an exhibition, a party or an anniversary meal, we offer the

perfect venue. Our modern clubhouse provides truly magnificent facilities that can accommodate up to 120 people.

We strive to be adaptable and versatile, liaising with the function organiser every step of the way to ensure that the day at least matches and hopefully exceeds expectations. Knowing that the organisation and the catering is in the safest of expert hands leaves everyone relaxed and in a position to enjoy the day’s festivities to the full.

At Langley Park we have a wide range of menus and packages to suit all events and budgets, from a family Sunday Lunch celebration to an a la carte meal.

The chef is also able to offer variations on the dishes and will happily accommodate special dietary requirements or any specific menu needs.

In our bar the House Manager is always keen to ensure we are well stocked with exciting wines and beers that are competitively priced.

Our clubhouse has been refurbished specifically with functions in mind and there are various room options for your party with purpose built folding doors in our extensive lounge, enabling functions to be catered for from 20 to 120 guests. This makes the internal layout of our clubhouse extremely flexible and can be hired out for full, half days or evenings. Room hire charges vary according to numbers booked and time/day of the week.

We offer an extensive range of menus from buffets to full service sit-down meals and our packages can incorporate arrival drinks, canapés and wines.

Our lounge features a purpose built dance floor and a new black and white chequered dance floor is also available to hire, transforming an event into a very special occasion.

A Haven for Wildlife

The course, set within 120 acres, is home to many plant and animal species. When it was

established there was only a scattering of trees, today there are mature trees throughout the course.

These now ancient trees, both living and in their dead state, are important for wildlife such as beetles, spiders and other invertebrates that inhabit dead wood.

Small mammals, bats and birds often use the holes and slits in trunks and boughs for nesting and roosting. These trees are also important for climbing plants, such as ivy, honeysuckle and fungi, which themselves may host a number of associated invertebrates.

If playing later in the day, you may be lucky enough to spot a Stag Beetle, Britain’s largest ground-living beetle, between 5-8cm in length.

A common sight (and sound) is that of the Parakeets, which add a tropical splash of colour on the course. Often found in flocks, numbering hundreds at a roost site, they are the UK’s only naturalised parrots.

The lake and surrounding area are home to Ducks, Moorhen and Heron that nestle amongst the reeds. The nest boxes on the island in the lake by the 18th have proved a great success, with Moorhens regularly using them.

If you are unlucky enough to put your ball in the water by the 12th or 18th you may have the chance to see some of the species that live below the surface. Look out for the Koi carp, Trout, Perch, Roach or Rudd, as well as the Freshwater Mussels.

In 2015 the green keeping staff came 2nd in the Sports Turf Research Institute (STRI) National awards in the ‘Outstanding Environmental Project of the Year’ category.

How to Find Us

Langley Park Golf Club is situated just over two miles from Bromley centre and is easily accessible from

Junction 4 of the M25 and only 10 miles from Central London.

For Satellite navigation purposes our postcode is BR3 6SZ.

Directions From M25 Junction 4 towards Bromley on A21. On entering Bromley, turn left at Waitrose and head 100yrds down the hill in the left lane, at traffic lights turn left (in front of RBS Building).

Straight on at the next set of traffic lights towards Beckenham. Go straight up the hill, passing mini Tesco’s, at next set of traffic lights head straight over.

The golf course is on the left hand side, half way down the hill.

Public Transport The nearest railway station is West Wickham, which is less than a mile away. Four trains an hour depart for central London with an estimated journey time of 35 minutes. Alternatively, Bromley South has more frequent services departing for central London with an estimated journey time of 16 minutes.
