Primary School Issue 11 1st March 2019

Dear Families,

Welcome back to the second half of the spring term.

The year is flying away with us but we still have lot of

time to enjoy the fun things planned for the

remainder of the year.

There are upcoming curriculum information sessions,

with a maths focus, to help you to support your

children at home. Please do come along if you can.

We have been lucky enough to enjoy some lovely

sunny weather recently. Please can I remind you to

send your child in with a suitable sun hat, even at this

time of year, when a sunny day is forecast. The sun’s

rays are no less harmful when there is a chill in the air.

I hope that you all received the minutes from the

parent forum last half term. Please do take the time

to look through them, particularly the internet safety

sections and the uniform section. How smart will our

soon to be Key Stage 2 children look!

You may have seen some of the additions to the

reception outdoor learning area. Huge thanks to

Mitchell’s dad who took the time to come in over half

term and donate materials and his handiwork. We are

really very grateful.

Thank you to those who have volunteered to be class

reps. There are still both Year 2 classes without

volunteers so please do come forward if you can be of

help.

We are looking forward to another half term with

parent helpers in the library and in class. It creates

such a wonderful community feel to have volunteers

in school supporting the children. The more the

merrier. If you would like to come in to support with

reading, and haven’t been in touch already, please do

speak to Mrs Stott and your child’s class teacher.

Thank you to all of you who took the time to complete

one of our questionnaires at last half term. We are

overwhelmed by your positive responses and we

continue to thank you for all of your support. Thank

you also for the constructive suggestions which we

will take on board. I have already liaised with the chair

of governors about ways to ensure that you are all

clear on the contribution that they make. Janet

Tibbalds will be in touch with you all soon regarding

this.

Have a lovely weekend. Fingers crossed for more

sunshine!

Mrs Kluzek

It has been a delight to see use of the library develop

recently, both in lesson times and at lunchtimes. I am

really grateful to the parents who give up their time to

support us with this work. There are still opportunities

for your to join our willing band of helpers –do please

let the school know if you can join us.

There are now almost 4000 Primary Schools in

England taking part in the Daily Mile, and we are one

of them! Everyone is able to run at their own pace

with their classmates, making them fitter, healthier

and more able to concentrate in the classroom.

Although we have chosen the two warmest February

days on record to begin this, I can confirm that all

have taken part and appear to be enjoying it!

Computing News

As our Year 2

children gain

confidence with the

laptops, they will

soon be getting to

grips with some

computer

programming. They

will use a range of

websites, including Scratch Junior. There is a free app

which you can download and begin to explore what

you can do with Scratch Junior with your child at

home. There is a parent guide on the site which give

parents some tips for how to explore the site with

their child. Have a look and see what you can create.

Music with Mrs Fry

KS1 have been working

with a Music Teacher from

LPBS, Mrs Fry, every

Wednesday in preparation

for our shared MAT Music

Festival in March. The

children have learned

some new songs,

accompanied by Mrs Fry

on the piano. They have also been taught how to sing

different melodies at the same time to harmonise

their voices, which will make their performance even

more special on the night!

We have also been learning songs for our Infant

Spring Festival where we will retell the story of “Be

Brave Little Penguin” with other Key Stage 1 children

from Hawes Down and Clare House. The children have

been learning about call and response songs and

changing their pitch to match the tune.

We are really looking forward to performing on

Monday 25th March at Langley Park Boys School and

we really hope you will join us for an exciting evening

of music!

School Council Success!

At our last school council meeting, we considered some of the issues raised by children at Langley Park Primary regarding rewards and incentives. Lots of children left notes in the school council boxes suggesting class motivation and rewards which could be separate from collecting house points for our houses.

The school council loved the idea of working together as class team and agreed that we would introduce class treats for good learning behaviour and team work in the classroom. We had lots of ideas but, settled on a class marble jar. Children could be awarded individual marbles for supporting the class or classes might be awarded marbles for working as a team to demonstrate super learning. Once a class collects 100 marbles they are entitled to a treat of their choice such as pyjama day or a movie afternoon.

Thank you to the school council for giving your time to improve our school.

Next session we will be looking at our local council and the idea of democracy as well as making plans for Red Nose Day. Keep putting your suggestions in the school council boxes. Miss Crosbie

Eco News

Our Eco Reps have been very busy already this half

term. They have successfully implemented 'Eco

Warriors' to the playground, where their presence in

preventing litter has seen a much tidier playground

and encouraged their peers to keep our playground a

tidy space.

As a committee, they decided the next issue to

address is getting everyone in our Langley Primary

community involved in recycling. We have teamed up

with 'The National Schools Partnership' to become

part of the UK’s biggest battery recycling programme.

Whenever you have any old batteries at home that

you wish to safety and correctly dispose of you can

now bring them into school and drop them into our

battery recycling point. Alternatively, if you feel like

recycling in true Eco Warrior style you can collect a

battery recycling box from your Class Teacher and

collect batteries from your family and friends that

need to be disposed of. At the end of May we will be

sending of our batteries to be safely recycled and our

school will be entered into a prize draw. Please

remember to put forward any future suggestions to

your class Eco Reps!

Daily Mile

This week we have begun

the Daily Mile. It has been

a great success and the

children have enjoyed

challenging themselves to

run further and for longer

periods. Noah in year two

said “The playground

doesn’t feel as busy so I

can run and I feel that my

learning is better

afterwards.” The children

have been very

enthusiastic and are enjoying the social aspect such as

Alice in year one who says “I love running and

exercising!”

It has also been a hit with the staff who are enjoying

an energising afternoon walk, jog or run.

I am extremely proud that LPPS are part of the Daily

Mile and thank you for introducing it to our children.

As a scientist and an educator, I had read about the

initial project in Scotland with interest. With the

research supporting the initial, sensible findings, it

seems like a win-win situation to me.

Perhaps other parents may like to look at the

scientific research behind this simple activity?

Fantastic Gymnastics

Year two have had the opportunity to explore the

large gym equipment in the hall. They practiced using

the equipment safely. Poppy and Raffi said they

“enjoyed climbing and feeling strong.” The other year

groups will get the opportunity to use the equipment

soon which we are sure will be an exciting lesson for

them!

RE News

It has been very exciting to continue to work with

Deacon MacBean from West Wickham Methodist

Church. She has been enhancing parts of our RE

curriculum with us since the school opened and she

sometimes comes into assembly to discuss Christian

celebrations and stories, such as Christmas and

provides the children with the opportunity to

experience Godly Play. We have an Easter assembly

planned and if possible some further activities with

the children. If there are any Christian families who

want to share their beliefs about Easter with us,

please get in touch. I am looking to expand our links

with the local religious community, so if you have any

contacts which could be useful, please let me know.

Mrs Kelly

Book and Bake Sale A huge THANK YOU to everyone who supported the LPPS Sun Saver Book and Bake Sale. The sale was a great success and raised a whopping £452 to be put towards the Playground Sun Shelter. This was all down to the fantastic donations sent in by parents and carers, so thank you for all the hard work and effort. We had a slight surplus of cakes which were taken to the Penge food bank who help the homeless, who were extremely grateful for the donations.

If you sent your cakes in in a re-usable container, please make sure you collect these from reception at your earliest convenience.

Totally Tokens!

Well, it seems that the people who send out the

World Book Day tokens didn’t realise we are a

growing school. They only sent us enough tokens for

the number of children we had last year! Worry not,

Mr Richardson has been on the case and ordered

more. We will distribute them as soon as they arrive

which we are told will be during next week.

Please look out for Miss Crosbie’s letter. Please do not

feel that you need to go out and buy anything new if

you do not have red clothes at home. As close to red

as you can will do. The aim is for us to raise as much

money as we can for a great cause.

Take One Picture – A National

Gallery Initiative

Wow! In the last week of term, all of the children

spent time in class exploring the work of Claude

Monet. All of the children took inspiration from his

piece ‘The Water Lily Pond’ and created some

outstanding art and written work. When you’re next

in the building, do have a look at the fabulous displays

which are around the building as the photos simply

don’t do their work justice. Well done everyone!

Reception

Reception have had an interesting start to the half

term with a strange visitor leaving footprints in our

classrooms. We discovered that it is a monster! We

are making our own monsters using salt dough over

the next two weeks and we might tell some stories

exploring our feelings using them…

In maths we have started the vocabulary of position,

for example in front, behind, next to, on, in and the

children are having great fun playing hide and seek

using the words. Next week we will be thinking about

measuring distance.

We are collecting modelling equipment again, such as

washed out yoghurt pots, egg boxes, and cereal

boxes. If we collect enough, every child will have the

chance to make a ‘Naughty Vehicle’ based on the

story Naughty Bus so please send anything in that you

might have at home.

The weather is changing! We have been discussing

with the children how they need to take their jumpers

off and drink lots of water to stay cool. We have even

had some children bringing in sun hats. In the warm

weather, we would like every child to have a named

sun hat in school please. We would also like to remind

you to apply long lasting sun cream before school

begins as we are unable to do this during the school

day. We still need a rain coat in school every day as

our weather is so unpredictable; if you wish to leave a

rain mac on your child’s peg which stays in school, this

is fine.

Year 1

After concluding our exciting Toy topic with a

wonderful trip to Build – a bear last term we now

have our class mascots…Humming Bear and Nighting

Bunny! These toys will be coming home with a child

each day to spend the evening with a member of the

class and their families. The toys will also be

accompanied by a class book so your child can write

about their adventures. This will be read to the class

on arrival back to school. We look forward to hearing

all about the exciting activities Humming Bear and

Nighting Bunny get up to!

We are now moving forward into the latter part of the

spring term with our new topic “Sensational Senses”.

We began the topic by sharing what we already know

about our senses and then discussed what we would

like to find out. Some of the questions children asked

were “Do animals have the same senses as humans?”

and “How far can I see?” These questions have

already inspired our learning as we are now eager to

develop our science skill by conducting and designing

our own simple experiments.

We have been making the most of the nice weather

and have taken our senses outside to discover what

we can see, hear, smell and touch. We could smell the

fresh grass, we heard a helicopter and birds cheeping,

we saw a squirrel and flower buds and we felt the

heat of the sun on our skin and cold metal.

Thank you for your continued support.

The Year One Team.

Year 2

Year 2 began their new topic 'Buildings and Structures' with a walk around the local area. We took this as an opportunity to observe human features such as bridges, Eden Park train station, shops, houses and some physical features including a river.

The Year 2's Claude Monet inspired display has made an excellent addition to the learning environment, showcasing all our efforts to re-create some of Monet's most notable pieces. We had an opportunity to respond to the art by identifying the different colours and techniques used within his work. Monet's 'Water Lily Pond' acted as our source of inspiration and allowed us to adorn our display with our own interpretations of his painting and our very own 3D water lily's. Healthy living has been top priority with the introduction of The Daily Mile and beginning to investigate how we can look after our bodies. We began by looking at different types of medicine

and the varying components that make up the eat well plate. Additionally, both classes worked as a team, showing a strong sense of unity in order to fill our marble jar and receive our first class treat! Best wishes, The Year 2 team (P.S. Did you hear about the burglar that walked into an art gallery? He said "Grab the Monet and Let's Gogh!")
