As you will have realised the publishing of the Village Grapevine has been rather erratic lately and on behalf of the Parish Council I must offer my sincere apolo- gies both to advertisers and ardent readers who look forward to the sound of it dropping through the letter box, yes it's a change from the usual bills. Thank you all for being so patient. Hasn't the weather been awful! Rain, rain and more rain and then that wind that nearly blew us away. Happily the weather does sometimes have positive outcomes. I took a stroll around the village the other day and noticed that our ancient pond in East End park is full to the brim with water. The pond is a seasonal watering hole and therefore is mainly only in water during the winter. Please be careful it is very deep! On the same trek I also found some not so pleasant and probably not so sea- sonal items. Most people are really fond of our village and treat it with love and affection and no more so than me having lived here for forty two years and attending schools with local kids in the sixties. But... On lifting the salt/grit bin lid next to Black Bull Green playing field I was as- tounded to find the shovel gone and amounts of dog mess thrown in amongst the salt. Imagine putting your hands in to get the salt and--- oh well you know the rest, please take it home. Along that same stretch of road some very shoddy repairs have been carried out by the County Council, the Parish Council are aware and have passed on com- ments made by you. Since my walk I did see a road sweeper clearing loose chippings from the carriageway. Our village boasts two wonderful playing fields, a well maintained cemetery, no- tice boards, planters and soon an area known at the moment as Pocket Park, added to this a generous programme of winter road gritting. "Some good - some bad" Welcome to the first Chairman’s Column and I hope you enjoy it. As you will have realised the publishing of the Village Grapevine has been rather erratic lately and on behalf of the Parish Council I must offer my sincere apolo-gies both to advertisers and ardent readers who look forward to the sound of it dropping through the letter box, yes it's a change from the usual bills. On the same trek I also found some not so pleasant and probably not so sea-sonal items. Most people are really fond of our village and treat it with love and affection and no more so than me having lived here for forty two years and attending schools with local kids in the sixties. But... On lifting the salt/grit bin lid next to Black Bull Green playing field I was as-tounded to find the shovel gone and amounts of dog mess thrown in amongst the salt. Imagine putting your hands in to get the salt and--- oh well you know the rest, please take it home. Along that same stretch of road some very shoddy repairs have been carried out by the County Council, the Parish Council are aware and have passed on com-ments made by you. obviously require funding and that funding comes from our pock-ets. Over the last five years we the council have managed to keep the precept on an even keel, no increase has been made but pleased to say no lapse of services either. Of course it is inevitable that costs go up. The council agreed to a small increase to the precept in order to carry out its normal duties and maintain the high standard achieved over the past years, hopefully you agree small increases over a time are better than one larger sum. Let's change the subject shall we? Do you have a story to share with us? Possibly a clean joke! Have you an interesting hobby? How about telling us about a ‘brill’ book you have read or a play you have seen, could be a review of a Langtoft Players show!!! The editors of the Grapevine need your contributions, it is your magazine . Well thanks for reading my little column and I look forward to writing another soon. My late wife Diana, before her death, had been saving newspaper cuttings relating to the village and I would love to share some of the stories with you, perhaps next time. Your Grapevine Magazine

As you will know apart from the actual printing of this magazine, the articles,

editing, production and distribution for your Grapevine is all done by volunteers

from within the village. This requires a significant time commitment especially

for editing and putting the magazine together for printing

Antonio the current editor has done much to improve the content of the maga-

zine but more recently due to both family and work commitments he has not

been able to give as much time as he would have liked to the Grapevine and has

asked the Council for some help.

The magazine will now be produced by a small group of Councillors helped by

the Clerk. Also the Council is pleased that Antonio has agreed to continue to

give editorial advice on the presentation and content.

We aim to get back to the regular bi-monthly timetable with the next edition All

are welcome to submit articles, letters etc for publication and apologies if we

have missed any articles in the changeover.

Members confirmed that this matter was brought to council’s attention and therefore was discussed. Questions from 2 members in the open forum regarding the development of Pocket Park. Cllr Thompson confirmed that this was an item on the agenda and would be discussed fully later. Members did agree however, that the parishioners do need to be updated on the situation with Pocket Park – Cllr Garratt confirmed that a statement is to be produced and placed on the website and in the next edition of the Grapevine. 102/13 Budget & Precept Setting 2014/15 The Council considered the budget requirements and consequential precept for 2014/15. The Council has been conscious of the economic climate over the past few years and noted that the precept in 2008/09 was £25,000, this was reduced in 2009/10 to £23,000 and further reduced in 2010/11 to £20,000 and the held at this level for 3 years to the current year. During this time staff costs have not increased but will next year due to the recent LGA pay award. Other running costs have gradually increased due to inflation, but the biggest increase is due to the winter gritting, which started in 2011/12 at a cost averaging £3000 per annum. No costs have yet been incurred on Pocket Park. Year End cash reserves have steadily declined in recent years and some increase in the precept for 2014/15 is now necessary to cover projected expenditure. The Council resolved to increase the total parish precept by £1000 to £21,000 for 2014/15. This would increase individual household’s parish council tax by 5% which is an approximate £1.31 annual increase per property (at band D). Proposed Cllr Halfhide, Seconded Cllr Garratt and agreed by all members. Cllr Thompson asked if an increase could be given to advertising costs for next financial year. Cllr Risk and the Clerk confirmed that an increase was made to advertising costs in 2011/12. Cllr Halfhide advised members that the advertising charges that are currently being charged are very low in comparison to many other Parish Magazines. 103/13 Date of next meeting After a brief discussion regarding the next meeting date it was agreed to continue with the current meeting schedule and therefore the next meeting date will be the 7th January 2014. The meeting closed at 9.29pm

Pocket Park

The Council is currently awaiting the S106 discussions

between Hanson's and Lincolnshire County Council as

the formal offer to purchase the land cannot be made

until the S106 land restoration requirements are com-

pleted to the satisfaction of LCC. As the Parish Council

is not a party to this we are dependent on LCC pro-

gressing the agreement with Hansons, but recent corre-

spondence from them suggests they are now moving

things forward.

There is further background information on Pocket Park on the website.

Please note that public access to this land is not currently allowed without permis-

sion from Hanson as the restoration has not been completed and the lakes are deep

Church News

New church chairs

Our new oak chairs arrived in the middle of December, just in time for our various Christ-mas celebrations, when we really appreciated the flexibility the chairs offer regarding the layout of the church. Many people have commented on how comfortable they are, and how much brighter the church looks without the long lines of dark pews.

Open Church

During this year our church will continue to be open every Saturday from 10am to 12noon, with coffee and tea available during the morning. On the first Saturday of each month at 9.15am, we hold our regular ‘Prayer Time’ in the Lady Chapel of the church. During this half hour, we meet informally to pray for our village, and those known to us who are in particular need. Anyone is most welcome to come along, or give us a written prayer request to use during this time. Also in the Lady Chapel are our three me-morial windows, where people can place flowers and light a candle in memory of a loved one.

Lent Lunches

These will take place every Thursday lunchtime (please note the change of day) during Lent, in the village hall between 12noon and 2pm. The lunches include a choice of home-made soup, with rolls and butter, followed by cheese and biscuits and tea or coffee. A donation of £3.00 is suggested for the lunch, and the money raised will be divided be-tween Christian Aid and our own village church. The first lunch is on Thursday March 6th and there will be one each week until April 10th.

Easter Egg Trails

These will take place on Saturday April 12th starting and finishing at the church, anytime between 10am and 4pm. This year there will be three trails: one for very young chil-dren, one for older children, and a new one for adults! Light refreshments available all day and soup ‘n sandwich lunches between 12noon and 2pm. Only £1.00 each to enter and everyone gets an egg!

Best wishes

Lent Courses in the Ness Group of Churches.

Lent is for Christians a time of self-denial and self examination as we prepare ourselves to remember the death and resurrection of Christ.

This year we shall be running two study groups over the period of Lent. Both groups will follow the same course but one will meet during the day and the other in the eve-ning.

The courses consist of 6 units and will run on Wednesdays beginning on March 12th and ending on April 16th (the day before Maundy Thursday). We expect each unit to take up about an hour and a half. Although it would be best to attend each week it is not essential, and you are welcome to attend whenever you can.

The course examines the promises made by Christians at their baptism and seeks to relate them to our own experience of life and discipleship today.

Week 1 March 12th Do You Turn To Christ?

Week 2 Mach 19th Do You Believe and Trust in God the Father?

Week 3 March 26th Do You Believe in His Son Jesus Christ?

Week 4 April 2nd Do You Believe in the Holy Spirit?

Week 5 April 9th Do You Repent Your Sins?

Week 6 April 16th Do You Renounce Evil?

Everybody is very welcome to come – whether you are a church-goer or not.

Afternoon Sessions (1 pm to 2.30 pm) will run at Michael Howard’s house (East Dean House, East End, Langtoft). Evening sessions (7.30pm – 9.00pm) will run at Janet Bea-dle’s House (The Vicarage, 10 Church Street, Thurlby).

Dear Parishioners

By now many of you have been into the Church and have seen our lovely new chairs and a large number of those people sat in them.

We are receiving enquires from people expressing an interest in spon-soring chairs to commemorate a particular occasion such as a Bap-tism, Wedding Day, or in memory of a loved one.

A small brass plaque (approximately 50 x25mm) will be engraved with the words of your choice and fixed to the back of the chair all for the donated fee of £100.00

DIARY OF EVENTS

Langtoft Grapevine Page 20 February - March 2014

Just in case you did not see the previous issue of the Grapevine, may I introduce myself

as the Lincolnshire County Councillor representing Market Deeping, West Deeping and

Langtoft. I have special responsibility on the council executive for the Fire and Rescue

Service, Trading Standards, Equality and Diversity issues and Emergency Planning.

To start with some very good news: I was pleased to have the opportunity to open the

new British Red Cross Centre in October on the King Street industrial estate. Whilst we

see on the TV the Red Cross working to help people overseas who are facing natural

disasters, we tend to overlook their role in our own community. The new centre has a

fully equipped events ambulance and a large modern room for first aid training. Red

Cross members play a major role in our county emergency planning exercises, and re-

cently when Boston suffered from floods, the Red Cross organised shelter and food for

those people whose homes had become uninhabitable. On a more routine basis the Red

Cross provides help for people with disabilities and forms part of the emergency response

team together with the Ambulance Service and Fire and Rescue co-responders.

Less welcome news is that, despite my best efforts, it now seems probable that our li-

brary building in Market Deeping will be among those closed as a result of funding cuts.

However, work is in progress to find new accommodation perhaps in the Community

Centre to house a smaller “community hub” facility. Library services are more important

than library buildings, and I shall continue to work for the “comprehensive and efficient”

service to which we are entitled in law.

With Christmas and the New Year celebrations behind us, we are moving apace into

2014. I therefore wish all readers a happy, healthy and peaceful new year!

Please contact me if you have any queries about the county council, or if you think

I may be able to help you in some way.

LANGTOFT PEARL BOWLS CLUB

As my previous report was produced prior to the season ending I

can now finalise the Club’s achievements during the 2013 summer:

In the Stamford League both the ‘A’ and ‘B’ teams finished 5th in their respective divi-

sions. Both teams did well in the Cup competitions with the ‘A’ team winning the Boor &

Wainwright Trophy after a very exciting final against Ketton who had defeated our ‘B’

team in the semi-final.

The 7 teams playing in the various Peterborough Leagues had 2 promotions and a

near miss third place. Unfortunately, the ‘A’ team were relegated by one point from the

premier division. The interesting outcome to all this is that next season we will have all

3 of our over ‘60’s teams playing in division one of the Club 60 league - some keen

rivalry there then!! in order to avoid confusion the league has asked the Club to have

more concise team names, rather than ‘ABC ‘.At the AGM the proposed idea that the 3

club Colours be used was accepted. After a draw by the 3 team captains ‘A’ became

‘Blue’, ‘B’‘ Green’ and ‘C’‘ Red’ - very imaginative don’t you think?

Other events which have taken place since our previous report are:

The Finals of the Club competitions during early September, with the winners spread

around the Members. The Club thanks John Kingsmill for his excellent organisation of

this major event which does require a lot of chasing to keep all matches on schedule!

The playing season ended on 15th September with a final social day, which was en-

joyed by all, despite the poor weather that day. Having said that, overall, apart from the

early part of the season, we enjoyed many sunny days and evenings this summer.

The annual Presentation Dinner took place at Milton Golf Club on Saturday 12th Octo-

ber, with a good time had by all. The AGM was held on the following Sunday in the

Village Hall. This was well attended and everybody was happy with the way the Club is

being administered.

The Club’s next major event is the Annual Quiz evening being held on Saturday 8th

February 2014 in the Village Hall to which all are welcome (Contact me if interested)

As usual everybody is invited to join us for Coffee at our ‘Cabin by the Green’ on

Dorothy’s Nature Corner

CANADA GOOSE – Branta Canadensis I am sure you will have seen Canada geese flying over and into Langtoft since October and, like other geese, they are gregarious and fly together in a v-shape or diagonal line formation. The Canada goose has a black head and neck and has a bright white band on the sides of its face which continues under its chin. Their wingspan is 80 cm with a length of 100cm and average weight is 6.6-19.8 lbs (3-9 kg). They were introduced into the UK in 1665 as an addition to the waterfowl collec-tion of King Charles II at St James’s Park. Until the late 50s they were a rarity but their numbers have ballooned to around 100,000 and they are not always welcome! They cause damage to growing crops and also on amenity land in parks, open spaces, golf courses and grassed areas around lakes and ponds. My research has found that just 50 geese can produce 2.5 tons of excrement per year!! The main proportion of their diet consists of seeds, grasses and aquatic plants. Canada geese mate for life and the female lays around 5 eggs in a shallow scrape lined with feathers and soft vegetation. Incubation takes up to 30 days and the male stays near. A group of geese in flight is known as a “skein” and a group on the ground is a “gaggle”. During flight they emit a variety of deep, nasal honking calls. Like me, do you wonder what they are honking about as they fly over? It may go something like this perhaps. . . ”Dad, how much further is it?” “Will we soon be there?” “My wings are aching and I’m hungry/thirsty/tired” . . . Are you affected by damage to your land by Canada geese? Perhaps you have been chased by one – please let me know!

Langtoft United Football Club As it’s been several years when I last updated the village on the football club, and now being half way through the season what better time do it. To the new comers to the village I’ll give a brief bit of history of Langtoft United Football Club (the Vikings). The football club was formed back in the early nineties starting in the Sunday afternoon league, winning everything going and the fact we could not achieve any more, Brian To-pham and myself (Barry Woodthorpe now chairman) decided to move to Saturday foot-ball where the sky is the limit, At that time we were both managing the team, in the first few years we were promoted from division six to division two winning several cups on the way, we both then decided to step down so new blood could come in and hopefully move us to another level, we moved up to division one some years later only to get relegated after a couple of seasons. Taking over as Chairman some years ago I have seen managers come and go, but a couple of years ago I appointed Ben Martin as manager who has been with me for some years he put together a team of young and lets say experience and in his second year we were promoted back to division one, Ben has now taken a year out for family reason and has just rejoined the club but I have now again appointed a manager from inside the club, Phil Gadsbey and I’m pleased to say we are sitting top of the league and have just ap-plied for the premier league. I have yet to mention our reserve team who are going equally well. We formed them in our second year of the Peterborough League to support the first team and again they have moved up the leagues over the years and sit just behind the first team in division two if they win their games in hand they too will be sitting five points clear at the top. If our dreams come true and both get promoted we will be one of the most successful village teams in Linconshire something all football fans in the village I am sure will be proud of. I am also pleased to see more people from the village coming down on a Satur-day to support us. Kick off’s 2-00 pm Not forgetting you can have a cup of tea, coffee etc in the club house, As I intend to update you all on our progress in future editions of the Grapevine and give you more history and information can I on behalf of all at Langtoft United FC extend best wishes to you all for the coming year. Route 66 Hi, I would be really grateful if you could put this small article in the Grapevine to allow us the opportunity to thank everyone who recently attended our dance and to let them know what we raised. I, (Pete Lane), play in a 60's band, along with friends Phil Cox, Dave Parry and Dave Woodward, the band is called Route '66. We try to get together two or three times a year to hold our own fund raising dances. Recently, together with my wife Sandee Lane, we organised a dance at the Village Hall in Langtoft, it was a huge success with lots of friends and family supporting us and enjoying the 60's music which we love and play. We try to choose a charity which is dear to all of us connected with the band and this time, due to two of us in the band recently having treatment for cancer, it was agreed that our chosen charity on this occasion would be for Cancer Research UK. We were delighted that we raised £500.00 on the night with raffle, auction items and other activities and donations. We were also very fortunate to have received many gifts to-wards the raffle etc and were really grateful to our family, friends and local businesses for this. The band members and wives recently got together to present the cheque to Laura Holland of Cancer Research UK in the sum of £500.00. Pete Lane 01778 346439

Knights Templar The Knights Templar were founded in France in 1117, at the request of the Pope, who wanted the pilgrims going to visit The Temple Of Solomon in Jerusalem, to be protected from muslim bandits . Over the next 200 years they, although started out as poor Knights of the cloth, soon found themselves to be very wealthy indeed. By 1300 they had their own ships going out to the Holy Lands with their own supplies and coming back laden with spices and cloths and various other goods that had never even been seen before The Templars had by this time over 5,000 castles , forts and farms ,all spread from Europe right into the sea areas of the Holy lands. They were also experts at lending money, and this was to be their down-fall, The King of France Philip owed the Templars a huge sum of money, and so along with Pope Clement 5th, plotted to bring the demise of the Templars This was done on Friday 13th October 1307, King Philip bringing in charges of heresy and of devil worship, leading to the arrest of the order. Some Knights escaped to Scotland others fled to other parts of Europe, the rest who were captured, many of them were burned at the stake. But the King didn’t have it all his own way, with the Templars arrested he set about raiding their strong rooms for the money that he was so des-perate for, but the Templars were one step ahead of him, having been tipped off, their treasure was smuggled out of everyone of their proper-ties, so when searched by Philips men, everyone one of the rooms were empty It was hidden and so well was it , it has never been discovered.

Until their disbandment in 1312, the Knights Templar were major land-owners on the higher lands of Lincolnshire
