LANGUAGE ARTS SEMESTER B OVERVIEW

• Unit 1: a getting started unit. It contains important information about the work you will complete this semester and tips for success!

• Unit 2: Poetry. This unit will help you improve your close reading and analytical skills. The portfolio of this unit will be an poetry analysis assignment where you will dig deep into the meaning of a poem. You will also need to select an independent reading novel for this unit. Your independent novel can be any novel you will be interested in reading!

• Unit 3: Drama. This unit examines the screenplay of The Diary of Anne Frank and includes a research component for the portfolio. Please make sure you visit the class website for directions, rubrics, and examples of the portfolio so you can complete it to the best of your ability.

• Unit 4: The Giver. This is our novel unit for The Giver, which you should have received in your school materials shipment. The unit contains several quizzes over the dystopian themes and plot events from the book.

LITERARY TERMS: POETRY

• poetry- a type of literature that usually makes use of highly concise, musical, and emotionally charged language

• Allusion- a reference to a well-known person, event, place, literary work, or work of art

• Contrast- v. to take notice of differences; n. a difference between people or things that are being compared

• figurative language- writing or speech that is not meant to be taken literally

• free verse- poetry not written in a regular, rhythmical pattern, or meter

• genre- a division or type of literature

• image- a word or phrase that appeals to one or more of the five senses

• meter- a poem’s rhythmical pattern

LITERARY TERMS: POETRY

• repetition- 1. persuasive technique in which the writer says something repeatedly for effect; 2. the use, more than once, of any element of language—a sound, word, phrase, clause, or sentence

• rhythm- the pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables in spoken or written language

• sensory language- language that appeals to the 5 senses (sight, smell, sound, taste, touch)

• speaker- the imaginary voice a poet uses when writing a poem

• stanza- a group of lines of poetry that are usually similar in length and pattern and are separated by spaces

• stereoscope- a device that combines two images to give an illusion of depth

• theme- a central message, concern, or purpose in a literary work
