STONEHENGE: SECRETS OF AN ANCIENT CIRCLEIn Ancient Times, people in southern England

constructed a stone monument that came to be called Stonehenge. The monument had circles of large

standing stones surrounded by a giant circle of earth. One of the most amazing parts of the monument as constructed was the innermost circle. In that circle,

there were five huge structures: each of these consisted of a giant stone laid across the top of two towering stone pillars. No one knows how ancient builders could have created these structures. Each

stone pillar weighed thousand of pounds and stood up to 22 feet tall. The cross pieces were also gigantic

and immensely heavy. How could these early people have possible lifted the giant stones, especially

without modern tools? Over time, many of the stones have fallen off or have been taken away by people to

build other things. However, some of the rocks remain standing today. Scientists have studied these stones alone with other relics from the same time period to try to figure out what the monument looked like and

what its purpose was. They have developed some explanations, but no firm answers have been agreed

upon.
