Etymological Dictionary of Proto-Germanic

Guus Kroonen, Leiden University

Germanic is one of the best studied branches of the Indo-European language family. This new etymological dictionary offers a wealth of material collected from both old and new Germanic languages, ranging from Gothic to Modern Faroese, from Old English to the Swiss dialects. It covers the largest part of the Proto-Germanic lexicon, containing around 7,000 lexemes. A large number of words for the first time receive an Indo-European reconstruction, and, as a result, the dictionary offers a full implementation of the laryngeal theory. Special focus is further put on the internal evolution of Germanic morphology and its consequences for the study of Germanic etymology.

Etymological Dictionary of Persian

Garnik S. Asatrian, Yerevan State University

The Etymological Dictionary of Persian is the most comprehensive and up-to-date work in the field of New Persian historical lexicology and etymology, since the publication of P. Horn’s Grundriss (1893) and H. Hübschman’s Persische Studien (1895). It synthesizes the achievements of Iranian, and Indo-European, comparative linguistics over the last century with regard to the study of the inherited lexicon of Persian. The dictionary covers the principal vocabulary of the Persian language attested in sources such as: Classical poetry, historical narratives, early Judaeo-Persian texts, medical treatises, mediaeval dictionaries (‘Farhangs’), as well as its use in modern urban vernaculars. Included in the listing, moreover, is a sizable amount of non-Turko-Mongolian and Arabic lexemes, particularly borrowings from Greek, Indian, and Caucasian languages. Copious references are given to the relevant literature, whereby each lemma is supplied with an extensive bibliography. The lemmas are rendered in the original Arabo-Persian script followed by a transcription, and are arranged according to the Arabic alphabet. The indexes, a.o. include, a detailed list of discussed New Persian forms both in their original alphabet and in transcription, as well as the different languages. The Etymological Dictionary of Persian is a basic source for Indo-Europeanists and experts in comparative linguistics, as well as a reference guide for those researching and studying Persian languages.

The Leiden Indo-European Etymological Dictionary Series publishes the results of a major Leiden University project identifying and describing the common lexical heritage of the Indo-European languages. Under the supervision of Alexander Lubotsky, an international team of historical linguists has for more than a decade

researched, collected and integrated a growing corpus of linguistic data. The data is published in a series of etymological dictionaries and will be concluded by the publication of a large Indo-European Etymological Dictionary, deemed as a successor of Julius Pokorny’s standard work published in 1959.

Encyclopedia of Hebrew Language and Linguistics

Edited by Geoffrey Khan

The Hebrew language has one of the longest attested histories of any of the world’s languages, with records of its use from antiquity until modern times. Although it ceased to be a spoken language by the 2nd century C.E., Hebrew continued to be used and to develop in the form of a literary and liturgical language until its revival as a vernacular in the 20th century. In a four volume set, complete with index, the Encyclopedia of Hebrew Language and Linguistics offers a systematic and comprehensive treatment of all aspects of the history and study of the Hebrew language from its earliest attested form to the present day. The encyclopedia contains overview articles that provide a readable synopsis of current knowledge of the major periods and varieties of the Hebrew language as well as thematically-organized entries which provide further information on individual topics, such as the Hebrew of various sources (texts, manuscripts, inscriptions, reading traditions), major grammatical features (phonology, morphology, and syntax), lexicon, script and paleography, theoretical linguistic approaches, and so forth. With over 950 entries and approximately 400 contributing scholars, the Encyclopedia of Hebrew Language and Linguistics is the authoritative reference work for students and researchers in the fields of Hebrew linguistics, general linguistics, Biblical studies, Hebrew and Jewish literature, and related fields.

The Encyclopedia of Arabic Language and Linguistics represents a unique collaboration of a few hundred scholars from around the world and covers all relevant aspects of the study of Arabic and deals with all levels of the language (pre-Classical Arabic, Classical Arabic, Modern Standard Arabic, Arabic vernaculars, mixed varieties of Arabic). No other reference work offers this scale of contributions or depth and breadth of coverage. The Encyclopedia of Arabic Language and Linguistics (EALL Online) contains all content of the print edition and new content is added on a regular basis. New articles are elaborations or updates of themes already discussed in the EALL, or are new entries

that are relevant to the field. The EALL Online comprehensively covers all aspects of Arabic languages and linguistics. It is interdisciplinary in scope and represents different schools and approaches to be as objective and versatile as possible. The online edition is cross-searchable, cross-referenced and regularly updated. The Encyclopedia of Arabic Language and Linguistics is an essential reference work for students and researchers in the fields of linguistics, Islamic studies, Arabic literature and other related fields. The Encyclopedia of Arabic Language and Linguistics is also available in print..

Features and Benefits- Over 500 entries- Over 300 contributors- Over 2.1 million words- Full-text searchable and advanced searchability- Browsable index- Fully Unicode compliant, to facilitate the display of foreign languages- A high-quality linguistic reference work- A unique and widely respected authoritative source in the field- Covers all relevant fields in Arabic linguistics, both general and language specific

Readership:An essential reference tool for students and researchers in the fields of Linguistics, Arabic Studies, Middle Eastern Studies, Islamic Studies, and related fields.

Review The mere appearance of the Encyclopedia of Arabic Language and Linguistics (EALL) on the scene carries huge importance for linguists working with Arabic, but also for scholars from other disciplines like Islamic studies, Arabic literature, social sciences, as well as general linguists, whose research cross paths with Arabic linguistics.... The strength of the EALL as a reference tool is that it brings together notions and terms from different disciplines (classical grammatical theory, modern linguistic theory), and different eras (pre-classical, classical, modern). By weaving together a wide variety of terms, the end product achieves a degree of disciplinary integration that remains illusive for reference works limited to one theoretical framework.... The EALL lives up to its claim to offering a framework within which data on all varieties of Arabic and different types of analyses can be drawn together from different parts of the globe in order to improve the propagation of knowledge regarding one of the world’s key languages.... Incorporated in the EALL are sketches of more than 40 dialects described according to a predetermined format, which allows the user to make quick cross-dialectical comparison.

Eight Decades of General Linguistics

The History of CIPL and Its Role in the History of Linguistics

Edited by Ferenc Kiefer, Hungarian Academy of Science, and Piet van Sterkenburg, University of Leiden

Eight Decades of General Linguistics presents the key lectures delivered at the eighteen conferences organized by the Permanent International Committee of Linguists and also a history of the Committee itself. The contributions of outstanding scholars such as Otto Jesperson, Louis Hjelmslev, André Martinet, Uriel Weinreich, Noam Chomsky and many other linguists cannot be over-estimated. The majority of the papers address a radically new topic, each of which became one of the central issues in subsequent linguistic research. In addition to their empirical findings and/or the theoretical innovations presented in their papers, each contribution is still interesting and pivotal to the development of contemporary linguistics.

Spanish in Bilingual and Multilingual Settings around the World

Gregory L. Thompson and Edwin M. Lamboy

This handbook is unique in its focus on bilingual theories, issues on the teaching of bilinguals, bilingual policies abroad, and current research on bilinguals as all of this related in some way to the Spanish-speaking world. There is currently no other book like it available, despite the growing number of courses teaching Spanish Bilingualism. It is anticipated that this new handbook will be of great interest to linguists, sociolinguists, language acquisitionists, as well as teachers who deal with topics relating to bilingualism as it relates to Spanish speakers around the world. Though work has been done looking at bilingualism and multilingualism, this book provides a valuable addition that deals with an area where a comprehensive work such as this is indeed lacking.

An Introduction to the Physiology of Hearing

Fourth Edition

James O. Pickles

This book deals with the way that the auditory system processes acoustic signals. The current edition has been revised in all areas to reflect the progress that has been made since the 3rd edition. As well as dealing with the basic anatomy and physiology of all stages of the auditory system, the book relates basic physiological processes to the performance of the auditory system as a whole, in the perception of acoustic signals including speech. The chapter on sensorineural hearing loss not only describes the physiological and anatomical changes that are associated with hearing loss, but includes latest information on treatments including cochlear implants, and work being undertaken on stem cell and other cellular therapies for deafness. A reading scheme has been provided to guide readers to the section most appropriate for their interests. The book is written so that those entering auditory research from very little background in auditory neuroscience are able to understand the current research issues and the current research literature. It is also intended to be a source book and reference work for advanced undergraduates studying the special senses, and for clinicians in the specialty of Otorhinolaryngology.

New and Forthcoming books

An Introduction to the Psychology of Hearing

Sixth Edition

Brian C.J. Moore

Now available in a sixth edition, An Introduction to the Psychology of Hearing is the leading textbook in the field of auditory perception, also known as psychoacoustics. The textbook’s longevity and loyal readership can be attributed to the accessible manner in which it describes the relationships between the characteristics of the sounds that enter the ear and the sensations that they produce. Wherever possible, the author has specified these relationships in terms of the underlying mechanisms. The intention is to impart an understanding of what the auditory system does and how it works: research results are not just described, but are interpreted and evaluated; knowledge is not assumed, but deduced from basic principles.

The new edition of An Introduction to the Psychology of Hearing has been thoroughly updated. New sections have been added covering perceptual methods of estimating basilar-membrane compression, informational masking of non-speech and speech sounds, experiments and theories concerning pitch perception, and the perception of speech in complex auditory environments.

Fundamentals of Hearing

Fifth Edition

William A. Yost

Fundamentals of Hearing is one of only a few textbooks that covers all of hearing at an introductory level. A meaningful introduction to hearing for students and a wealth of data and facts related to hearing for the professional. It it heavily illustrated with over 200 figures. Each chapter concludes with a Supplement section with additional resources about topics covered. Appendices provide background information to enable full comprehension of content. It contains a complete Glossary of terms from the American Standards Institute, a combined subject/author index, and a comprehensive bibliography. The fifth edition of this successful introductory text on hearing sciences includes auditory, anatomy, physiology, psychoacoustics, and perception content.

Signals and Systems for Speech and Hearing

Second Edition

Stuart Rosen and Peter Howell

Signals and Systems for Speech and Hearing (2nd edition) provides the reader with a thorough introduction to the concepts of signals and systems analysis that play a role in the speech and hearing sciences. Few equations are used, and an informal, friendly and informative style is maintained throughout. Because much of the story is told through figures, the authors have gone to great lengths to provide clear and truthful figures that show what the text says they do. It is hoped the reader will come away with a strong visual understanding of the concepts involved. This book can be used at many levels, from the student who hasn’t heard of a spectrum before, to the experienced worker who has only a fuzzy understanding of the notion of an impulse response. The authors have tried to keep the underlying conceptual structure of signals and systems analysis explicit, in the hope that even some readers with advanced technical training might find clarification of the basic principles. Notable features include over 300 figures integrated closely with the text, all drawn specifically. Exercises are provided at the end of most chapters.

The Write Approach: Techniques for Effective Business Writing

Olivia Stockard

Olivia Stockard is a New York-based communications consultant who helps business writers use their skills in analysis and logic to produce successful business messages. In this new edition of “The Write Approach”, Dr. Stockard discusses how the speed of technology can cause business writers to shortcut the thinking, planning, and editing needed for good writing. Rather than “pushing the send button” without considering the consequences, writers are guided in ways to be more thoughtful in their use of communication tools and practices. The new edition’s expanded commentary and exercises underscore the author’s basic premise: writers must determine their purpose for writing, consider their readers’ expectations, and polish the final product. Self-instructional activities invite readers to practice evaluating and improving business writing.

The New Handbook of Second Language Acquisition

Edited by William C. Ritchie and Tej K. Bhatia

The New Handbook of Second Language Acquisition is a thoroughly revised, re-organized, and re-worked edition of Ritchie and Bhatia’s 1996 handbook. The work is divided into six parts, each devoted to a different aspect of the study of SLA. Part I includes a recent history of methods used in SLA research and an overview of currently used methods. Part II contains chapters on Universal Grammar, emergentism, variationism, information-processing, sociocultural, and cognitive-linguistic. Part III is devoted to overviews of SLA research on lexicon, morphosyntax, phonology, pragmatics, sentence processing, and the distinction between implicit and explicit knowledge. Part IV examines neuropsycholgy of SLA, another on child SLA, and the effects of age on second language acquisition and use. Part V is concerned with the contribution of the linguistic environment to SLA, including work on acquisition in different environments, through the Internet, and by deaf learners. Finally, Part VI treats social factors in SLA, including research on acquisition in contact circumstances, on social identity in SLA, on individual differences in SLA, and on the final state of SLA, bilingualism.

Assistive Technology: Principles and Applications for Communication Disorders and Special EducationEdited by Oliver Wendt, Raymond W. Quist and Lyle L. Lloyd

This book provides readers with vast knowledge of practical applications, theoretical models, services and evidence-based solutions in the areas of assistive technology (AT) and augmentative and alternative communication (AAC). It aims to equip practicing clinicians, educators and students with the necessary background to use AT and AAC with their clients. This book also sheds light on the many different roles and functions of AT and AAC for a large variety of clinical populations, and suggests solutions the reader can implement immediately. Although a particular focus is set on communication disorders, described applications and resources also apply to individuals with developmental disabilities and sensory impairments. In addition to outlining most recent low and high technology, this book makes a particularly strong effort to teach general principles and guidelines for successful AT and AAC interventions regardless of what particular technology is used. This resource is a crucial addition to the bookshelf of any professional dealing with AT and/or AAC, including speech-language pathologists, special educators, occupational therapists, physical therapists, early intervention specialists, students in professional programs, users of AT or AAC, their families, and applied researchers. This is a must read for novices and seasoned professional alike.

Augmentative and Alternative Communication for Adults with Aphasia: Science and Clinical PracticeEdited by Rajinder Koul

Augmentative and Alternative Communication for Adults with Aphasia is a text written for practising clinicians, undergraduate and graduate students, assistive technologists and other stakeholders who are interested in learning more about the communication needs and options for people with aphasia. Although there are several book chapters dedicated to aphasia in currently available textbooks in augmentative and alternative communication (AAC), this is the first book dedicated entirely to AAC and aphasia.

New and Forthcoming books

The Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) Perspectives is a series of extensively-referenced books based on the three cornerstones of evidence-based practice (EBP): research, clinical and/or educational expertise, and stakeholder perspectives.

Volumes will vary from emphasis on research and basic information to highlighting clinical and educational practice. All the books will relate to aspects of the broad communication model originally proposed by

L.L. Lloyd, R. W. Quist and J. Windsor in “A proposed augementative and alternative communication model”, Augmentative and Alternative Communication, 6 (1990).

We hope that Augmentative and Alternative Communication Perspectives will add to the knowledge base and provide a valuable resource in the field of AAC.

The Reflexes of the Proto-Indo-European Laryngeals in Celtic

Nicholas Zair, University of Cambridge

In The Reflexes of the Proto-Indo-European Laryngeals in Celtic, Nicholas Zair for the first time collects and assesses all the words from the Celtic languages which contained a laryngeal, and identifies the regular results of the laryngeals in each phonetic environment. This allows him to formulate previously unrecognised sound changes affecting Proto-Celtic, and assess the competing explanations for other developments. This work has far-reaching consequences for the understanding of the historical phonology and morphology of the Celtic languages, and for etymological work involving the Celtic language, along with implications for Indo-European sound laws and the Indo-European syllable. A major conclusion is that the laryngeals cannot be used to argue for an Italo-Celtic language family.

This series offers a new venue for high-quality original studies in Indo-European linguistics, from both a comparative and historical perspective, including relevant works on the prehistory/early history of the oldest descendant languages. It will also welcome studies in poetics and comparative mythology that include a significant linguistic and philological component. It seeks especially to fulfill

the unmet need for analyses that employ innovative approaches and take account of the latest developments in general linguistic models and methods. The scope of the series is avowedly international, but authors are encouraged to write in English to maximize dissemination of their ideas.

A Commentary on Augustine’s De cura pro mortuis gerenda

Rhetoric in Practice

Paula J. Rose

In De cura pro mortuis gerenda Augustine interweaves an assessment of burial near the memorial of a martyr with a series of dream narratives. The seeming lack of coherence between argument and narrative in this treatise has puzzled many scholars. Combining an analysis of the overall structure of the argument and a detailed philological commentary, this study shows that Augustine’s text forms a well-composed unity. The study is based on discourse-linguistic and narratological concepts as well as an analysis of the global structure of the narratives. Relying on this combined approach Rose demonstrates how Augustine explores the full breadth of his narrative material in the service of his argument. In addition, this book situates Augustine’s text in its cultural-historical context.

Enargeia in Classical Antiquity and the Early Modern Age

The Aesthetics of Evidence

Heinrich F. Plett, Universität Duisburg-Essen

The present study provides an extensive treatment of the topic of enargeia on the basis of the classical and humanist sources of its theoretical foundation. These serve as the basis for detailed analyses of verbal and pictorial works of the Classical Antiquity and the Early Modern Age. Their theoretical basis is the tradition of classical rhetoric with its principal representatives (Aristotle, Cicero, Quintilian) and their reception history. The ‘enargetic’ approach to the arts may be described as rhetoric of presence and display, or aesthetics of evidence and imagination. Visual imagination plays a major role in the concepts of effect in oratory, poetry, and drama of the Classical Antiquity and the Early Modern Age. Its implementations are manifested in the Second Sophistic and in the Early Modern Age, there above all in the works of William Shakespeare.

This peer-reviewed book series offers an international forum for high-quality scholarly studies on the indigenous languages of South, Central and North America, including the Arctic. Around 1,000 genealogically and typologically very diverse languages are spoken in this immense region. Due to ecological and cultural pressure this treasure trove of languages is often highly endangered with extinction, hence the urgency of its preservation and study. The publications

in this series will concern both descriptive and analytical work on American indigenous languages, and include handbooks, language surveys, grammatical descriptions and theoretical, historical, areal and typological monographs or particularly well-organized edited volumes with a central theme. Even though the scope of the series is international, authors are encouraged to write in English to reach as large as possible a readership.

A Typological Grammar of Panare

A Cariban Language of Venezuela

Thomas E. Payne & Doris L. Payne, University of Oregon

Panare is a seriously endangered Cariban language spoken by about 3,500 people in Central Venezuela. A Typological Grammar of Panare by Thomas E. Payne and Doris L. Payne is a full length linguistic grammar owritten from a modern functional and typological perspective. The many remarkable characteristics highlighted in the grammar include a ‘split-inverse’ person marking system, transitivity-sensitive aspect and person-marking verb morphology, object incorporation, relatively nonconfigurational NP structure, both verb-initial and object-initial constituent orders, a complex system of clause chaining, switch reference, and a rich system of evidential and epistemic marking.

Benasní - I Remember: Dene Sųłiné Oral Histories with Morphological AnalysisJosh Holden, Université de Montréal

In Benasní – I Remember: Dene Sųłiné Oral Histories with Morphological Analysis, Josh Holden presents twelve autobiographical narratives about cultural change from Dene Sųłiné elders in an Aboriginal community in northern Saskatchewan, Canada. In ten interviews and two monologues, the speakers recount their 20th century: the rhythms of traditional life, the catastrophe of epidemics and language loss, the dizzying technological changes, their ambivalence over the past and their anxieties for the future. Accompanying the original Dene texts and free translation is an analytical interlinear gloss applying rigorous morphological and semantic principles to the parsing and glossing of words. The innovative interlinearization distinguishes grammar from visible etymologies. The volume contains a morphological sketch to illuminate grammatical issues in the interlinearization.

Brill’s Studies in Language, Cognition and Culture (BSLC) is a new peer-reviewed book series that offers an international forum for high-quality original studies in languages and cultures. It focuses on the interaction between linguistic categories (and their conceptualization), cultural values, and human cognition. Publications in this series will include interdisciplinary studies on language, its meanings and forms, and possible interactions with cognitive and communicational patterns. The series spans cultural and social anthropology, cognitive science and linguistics. The emphasis is on inductive based cross-linguistic and cross-cultural studies, with special attention to poorly known areas, such as Lowland Amazonia and the Pacific. The series is international in scope and it is envisaged that three to four new volumes will be published each year.

Perception and Cognition in Language and Culture

Edited by Alexandra Y. Aikhenvald, Cairns Institute, James Cook University and Anne Storch, University of Cologne

Every language has a way of talking about seeing, hearing, smelling, tasting and touching. In about a quarter of the world’s languages, grammatical evidentials express means of perception. In some languages verbs of vision subsume cognitive meanings. In others, cognition is associated with a verb of auditory perception, touch, or smell. ‘Vision’ is not the universally preferred means of perception. In numerous cultures, taboos are associated with forbidden visual experience. Vision may be considered intrusive and aggressive, and linked with power. In contrast, ‘hearing’ and ‘listening’ are the main avenues for learning, understanding and ‘knowing’. The studies presented in this book set out to explore how these meanings and concepts are expressed in languages of Africa, Oceania, and South America.

Copies versus Cognates in Bound Morphology

Edited by Lars Johanson, University of Mainz, and Martine Robbeets, University of Mainz

Genealogical linguistics and areal linguistics are rarely treated from an integrated perspective even if they are twin faces of diachronic linguistics. In Copies versus Cognates in Bound Morphology Lars Johanson and Martine Robbeets take up this challenge. The result is a wealth of empirical facts and different theoretical approaches, advanced by internationally renowned specialists and young scholars whose research is highly pertinent to the topic.Copies versus Cognates in Bound Morphology puts genealogical and areal explanation for shared morphology in a balanced perspective and works out criteria to distinguish between morphological cognates and copies. Lars Johanson and Martine Robbeets provide nothing less than the foundations for a new perspective on diachronic linguistics between genealogical and areal linguistics.

Contributors include: Alexandra Aikhenvald, Ad Backus, Dik Bakker, Peter Bakker, Éva Csató, Stig Eliasson, Victor Friedman, Francesco Gardani, Anthony Grant, Salomé Gutiérrez-Morales, Tooru Hayasi, Ewald Hekking, Juha Janhunen, Lars Johanson, Brian Joseph, Folke Josephson, Judith Josephson, Johanna Nichols, Martine Robbeets, Marshall Unger, Nikki van de Pol, Anna Verschik, Lindsay Whaley

Language Contact in the Danish West Indies: Giving Jack His JacketRobin Sabino, Auburn University

Language Contact in the Danish West Indies: Giving Jack His Jacket lays bare crucial roles played by community and resistance in the refashioning of heritage languages. Robin Sabino draws on her community relationships, her fieldwork with a last speaker, and research from a range of disciplines, to advance a revisionist history that elucidates the African linguistic resources used to create community in a land those who were transhipped did not choose and from which they could not return. In parallel fashion, the narrative locates the partial appropriation of creole features by the colony’s Euro-Caribbean community in the emergence of local identity. It also traces the replacement of Dutch and Virgin Islands Dutch Creole with their English counterparts.

Brill’s Studies in South and Southwest Asian Languages (BSSAL) is a new peer-reviewed series that provides a venue for high-quality monograph-length descriptive and theoretical studies on the languages of South and Southwest Asia. In the political sense, South Asia encompasses the seven independent states Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, the Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka, but linguistically and culturally it also includes some adjacent areas to the east and north, notably Tibet. Southwest Asia is understood here as comprising the Iranian languagespeaking territory to the west of South Asia, i.e., the states of Afghanistan and Iran and the geocultural transnational

region Kurdistan, consisting of parts of Turkey, Iraq, Iran and Syria.

The languages – ancient and modern – of South and Southwest Asia have played a central role in linguistics from the field’s very beginnings as a modern scientific endeavor, and continue to occupy a central position in discussions in many linguistic subdisciplines, such as phonology, morphology, syntax, historical linguistics, sociolinguistics, typology, writing systems, and areal studies, to name just a few. The series seeks high-quality, state-of-the-art contributions on all aspects of the languages of this linguistically diverse and fascinating area.

The Genesis of Sri Lanka Malay

A Case of Extreme Language Contact

Sebastian Nordhoff, Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology, Leipzig

In The Genesis of Sri Lanka Malay: A Case of Extreme Language Contact, the synchrony and diachrony of Sri Lanka Malay are investigated from a variety of angles: Experts on South Asia, South East Asia, Creole Studies, Areal Linguistics, Typology, and Sociolinguistics all contribute their share to a truly global analysis of one of the most extreme cases of language contact, where the Malays changed the whole morphosyntax of their language in as little as just over three centuries. The genesis of Sri Lanka Malay informs theories of language contact, language change, and ‘creolization’, as well as sociolinguistics, language policy and planning and a critical analysis of the ‘endangered language’ discourse.

Medieval Tibeto-Burman Languages IV

Edited by Nathan W. Hill, SOAS, London

While providing unique and detailed information on early Tibeto-Burman languages and their contact and relationship to other languages, this book at the same time sets out to establish a field of Tibeto-Burman comparative-historical linguistics based on the classical Indo-European model. The volume includes six papers on Tangut, three on Tibetan and one each on the languages Mon, Burmese, Lepcha, Pyu, Nam, and Yi. Building a bridge between linguistic and literary research the range of studies treats phonology, decipherment, literature and religion.

Duty, Language and Exegesis in Prābhākara Mīmāṃsā

Including an edition and translation of Rāmānujācārya’s Tantrarahasya, Śāstraprameyaparicchedaby Elisa Freschi, University ‘Sapienza’ Rome.

The book is an introduction to key concepts of Indian Philosophy, seen from the perspective of one of its most influential schools, the Prābhākara Mīmāṃsā, which flourished from the 7th until the 20th c. AD. The book includes the critical edition and translation of Rāmānujācārya’s Śāstraprameyapariccheda, which is part of his Tantrarahasya (written in South India, after the 14th c.). This text has never been translated before and it is one of the clearest elaboration of the Prābhākara thought.

The book particularly aims at presenting the linguistic, deontic-ethic, hermeneutic and epistemo-logical thought of the Prābhākara Mīmāṃsā. Detailed glossary and indexes make it possible to use the book as a reference-tool for Indian philosophy and linguistics.

Mapping the Old Zhuang Character Script

A Vernacular Writing System from Southern China

David Holm, National Chengchi University

The traditional Zhuang script is a character script based on Chinese, adapted for the purpose of writing the Tai languages of southern China and northern Vietnam. Mapping the Old Zhuang Character Script by David Holm, presents for the first time a systematic overview of such a script, based on a survey of traditional texts in 45 locations among the Zhuang and related peoples in Guangxi, Guizhou, eastern Yunnan, and northern Vietnam. Complete with 133 maps, it looks at patterns of geographic variation in relation to dialect, the domains of former native chieftaincies, the activities of ritual masters and Taoist priests, large-scale migrations, and the transplantation of garrisons of native troops. Internal evidence indicates the script has a history dating back to the early Tang if not earlier.

The Japanese Translations of the Hebrew Bible

History, Inventory and Analysis

Doron B. Cohen, Doshisha University

The Japanese Translations of the Hebrew Bible: History, Inventory and Analysis, the first book of its kind in English, recounts the story of the translation of the Bible into Japanese, with particular focus on the Hebrew Bible (Old Testament). It includes a detailed inventory of both full and partial OT translations into Japanese, describing the history of their making and the identity of the translators. Numerous quotations from the various translations are compared with the Hebrew original and with other versions, and analyzed linguistically and theologically. The analysis exposes the ways in which translators sought to bridge the wide linguistic and cultural gaps between the Hebrew Bible and Japan, and the ways in which their translations reflect certain aspects of Japanese society and the place of the Bible in it.

A Glossary of Reference on Subjects Connected with the

Far East

Herbert A. Giles

The Glossary was designed primarily as a key to an understanding of the terms and terminology employed in Anglo-Chinese society at the turn of the twentieth century. It covers subjects as diverse as the origin of words (such as ‘amok’ and ‘chop’), practices such as footbinding, consideration of the thoughts of Confucius, and many other items of interest and information. Against each entry the equivalent Chinese characters are given. First published in 1878, a third edition appeared in 1900.

The Meaning of Korean Prosodic Boundary Tones

Mee-Jeong Park, University of Hawai’i

This book marks the first attempt to rationalise the meaning of Korean intonation, especially its boundary tones. Unlike other languages where various pragmatic and discourse meanings are delivered through the types of pitch accent (prominent pitch movement on stressed syllable) and the types of phrase-final boundary tones, Korean delivers the pragmatic/discourse meaning mainly by the types of phrase-final boundary tones. This is possible because Korean has at least nine boundary tones while other languages have two (or, even four or five if the boundary tone of a smaller phrase are included). Various examples are given that illustrate this three-way relationship, i.e., a specific meaning delivered by a certain type of boundary tone and a certain type of morphological marker in natural conversation.

Multidimensional Semantics of Evaluative Adverbs

Mingya Liu

Multidimensional Semantics of Evaluative Adverbs provides a multidimensional analysis for the lexical semantics of evaluative adverbs: nonfactive evaluative adverbs trigger a conventional implicature, whereas factive evaluative adverbs not only trigger a conventional implicature but also a conventional presupposition. This analysis proves to be more advantageous than existing analysis in terms of empirical coverage and explanatory power. With the case of evaluative adverbs, the book demonstrates how secondary meanings (e.g. conventional presuppositions, conventional implicatures) interact with primary meanings (i.e. main assertion, or at-issue content). For the first time, a three-dimensional formal language of conventional implicatures and conventional presuppositions is implemented and applied to derive the right truth conditions of sentences with evaluative adverbs and predict their projection behaviors.

Vagueness, Gradability and Typicality

The Interpretation of Adjectives and Nouns

Galit W. Sassoon

This book presents a study of the connections between vagueness and gradability, and their different manifestations in adjectives (morphological gradability effects) and nouns (typicality effects). It addresses two opposing theoretical approaches from within formal semantics and cognitive psychology. These approaches rest on different, apparently contradictory pieces of data. For example, for psychologists nouns are linked with vague and gradable concepts, while for linguists they rarely are. This difference in approach has created an unfortunate gap between the semantic and psychological studies of the concepts denoted by nouns, as well as adjectives. The volume describes a wide range of relevant facts and theories. Psychological notions such as prototypes and dimensions are addressed with formal rigor and explicitness. Existing formal semantic accounts are examined against empirically established cognitive data. The result is a comprehensive unified approach.

Current Research in the Semantics/Pragmatics Interface

Series Editors: Klaus von Heusinger, University of Cologne and Ken Turner, University of Brighton

For more information please visit brill.com/crispi ISSN 1472-7870

The aim of this series is to focus upon the relationship between semantic and pragmatic theories for a variety of natural language constructions. The boundary between semantics and pragmatics can be drawn in many various ways; the relative benefits of each have given rise to a vivid theoretical dispute in the literature in the last three decades. As a side effect, this variety has produced a certain degree of confusion and absence of purpose in the extant publications

on the topic. This series provides a forum where the confusion within the existing literature can be removed and the issues raised by different positions can be discussed with a renewed sense of purpose. The editors intend the contributions to this series to take further steps towards clarity and cautious consensus.

Deriving Nominals

A Syntactic Account of Malagasy Nominalizations

Dimitrios Ntelitheos, United Arab Emirates University

This book provides a detailed study of nominalizing patterns in Malagasy (Austronesian) and discusses the broader theoretical issues that arise from these patterns. It explores new and original fieldwork data drawn from the largely unexplored domain of Malagasy deverbal nominals. Offering new insights to long-standing puzzles in the derivation of argument-structure, referential, and clausal nominals, the book promotes a single structure-building mechanism, which allows nominalizers to attach at different heights in the clausal spine to derive nominals with different morphosyntactic properties. In addition, it provides a novel analysis of participant nominalizations, showing that they are derived through the same mechanism that derives relative clauses, and thus setting the stage for new and exciting research directions.

Dynamics of Morphological Productivity

The Evolution of Noun Classes from Latin to Italian

Francesco Gardani, University of Graz

In Dynamics of Morphological Productivity, Francesco Gardani explores the evolution of the productivity of the noun inflectional classes of Latin and Old Italian, covering a span of almost 2,000 years – an absolute novelty for the theory of diachrony and for Latin and Italo-Romance linguistics. By providing an original set of criteria for measuring productivity, based on the investigation of loanword integration, conversions, and class shift, Gardani provides a substantial contribution to the theory of inflection, as well as to the study of the morphological integration of loanwords. The result is a wealth of empirical facts, including data from the contact languages Etruscan, Ancient Greek, Germanic, Arabic, Byzantine Greek, Old French and Provençal, accompanied by brilliant and groundbreaking analyses.

The field of linguistics thrives on empirical data, whether from languages, from psycholinguistic experiments, from sociolinguistic interviews, from typological surveys, or from historical investigations, to name just a few sources of data. At the same time, the field also thrives on theory, inasmuch as general theories of language structure, language use, language acquisition, and language change are essential to a full understanding of how the object of our investigations, natural human language, works. Theories provide a basis for testable claims about language, claims that can be tested and confirmed or disproved

only by empirical considerations.Empirical Approaches to Linguistic Theory (EALT) is a book series that aims to publish high-quality works that are grounded in empirical data but at the same time advance theoretical goals. The relevant notion of ‘theory’ envisioned here is broad and eclectic, but also rigorous. The contributing empirical data is similarly broadly defined. The new series will include single or co-authored monographs on a single topic or linguistic issue, state-of-the art reports and/or thematically coherent multi-authored volumes.

Syntax and Semantics

Series Editor: Jeff Runner, University of Rochester

For more information please visit brill.com/sas ISSN 0092-4563

Much of the interesting work in linguistics today concerns the interfaces between the traditional components of grammar. The aim of the Syntax and Semantics series is to publish exciting and innovative research involving the sub-systems of grammar that interface with syntax and semantics. This crucially includes the syntax-semantics interface itself, but also the systematic interplay of syntax and semantics with pragmatics, information structure and

discourse. The series will promote in particular research that brings novel forms of empirical evidence to bear on issues in theoretical syntax and semantics.

The series Syntax and Semantics is listed on the ISI Web of Knowledge.

The End of Argument Structure

Edited by María Cristia Cuervo and Yves Roberge

A central question in the study of language concerns the mechanisms by which the participants in an event described by a sentence come to occupy their positions and acquire their interpretation. The papers included in this volume explore current issues and re-assess generally accepted premises on the relationship between lexical meaning and the morphosyntax of sentences by confronting two competing approaches to this issue. A long-standing approach is based on the assumption that it is the lexical meaning of a verb that determines, albeit indirectly, the basic properties of sentence structure at the level of verbal meaning, including asymmetric relations, thematic roles, case, and agreement. An alternative approach claims that, to a large extent, the syntax itself establishes possible verbal meanings on the basis of the legitimate relations that can exist between syntactic heads, complements, and specifiers. Amharic, Catalan, Chamorro, Chukchee, English, Georgian, Inuit, Korean, Malagasy, Slovenian and Spanish, are among the languages used to provide empirical evidence and illustrate the argumentation.

Experiments at the Interfaces

Edited by Jeffrey T. Runner

While experimental data collection has been common in psycholinguistics for some time, only relatively recently have experimental methods been employed to collect data for research in formal linguistics. Experimental methods can be particularly useful for investigating phenomena at the interfaces of the components of grammar, where the sources of multiple types of information need to be carefully controlled. Experiments at the Interfaces, edited by Jeffrey T. Runner from the University of Rochester, brings together recent experimental research examining a variety of issues within syntax and semantics, and their interfaces with each other and with other domains of language. The volume showcases a wide range of experimental methods and illustrates how they can be applied to critical questions relevant to formal linguistics.

Subjectivity in Language and Discourse

Edited by Nicole Baumgarten, Inke Du Bois and Juliane House

Subjectivity in Language and in Discourse deals with the linguistic encoding and discursive construction of subjectivity across languages and registers. The aim of this book is to complement the highly specialized, parallel and often separate research strands on the phenomenon of subjectivity with a volume that gives a forum to diverse theoretical vantage points and methodological approaches, presenting research results in one place which otherwise would most likely be found in substantially different publications and would have to be collected from many different sources. Taken together, the chapters in this volume reflect the rich diversity in contemporary research on the phenomenon of subjectivity. They cover numerous languages, colloquial, academic and professional registers, spoken and written discourse, diverse communities of practice, speaker and interaction types, native and non-native language use, and Lingua Franca communication.

New Approaches to Hedging

Edited by Gunther Kaltenböck, Wiltrud Mihatsch and Stefan Schneider

Hedging is an essential part of everyday communication. It is a discourse strategy which is used to reduce commitment to the force or truth of an utterance to achieve an appropriate pragmatic effect. In recent years hedges have therefore attracted increased attention in Pragmatics and Applied Linguistics, with studies approaching the concept of hedging from various perspectives, such as speech act - and politeness theory, genre-specific investigations, interactional pragmatics, and studies of vague language. The present volume provides an up-to-date overview of current research on the topic by bringing together studies from a variety of fields. The contributions span a range of different languages, investigate the use of hedges in different communicative settings and text types, and consider all levels of linguistic analysis from prosody to morphology, syntax and semantics.

The Studies in Pragmatics series is dedicated to publishing innovative, authoritative monographs and edited collections from all micro-, macro- and meta-pragmatic linguistic perspectives.Rooted in the interdisciplinary spirit of the Journal of Pragmatics, it welcomes not only book proposals from linguistics proper but also pragmatically-oriented proposals from neighboring disciplines such as interactional sociology, language philosophy, communication science,

social psychology, cognitive science, and information science. The goal of the series is to provide a widely read and respected international forum for high quality theoretical, analytical, and applied pragmatic studies of all types. By publishing leading edge work on natural language practice, it seeks to extend our growing knowledge of the forms, functions, and foundations of human interaction.

Measuring Writing: Recent Insights into Theory, Methodology and PracticeEdited by Elke van Steendam, Marion Tillema, Gert Rijlaarsdam and Huub van den Bergh

This volume provides a state-of-the-art overview of theory, methodology and practices in the assessment of writing. The focus throughout the book is on the construct of writing and its assessment: what constitutes writing ability and how can it be defined (in various contexts)? This question cannot be answered without looking into the methodological question of how to validate and measure the construct of writing ability. Throughout the book, therefore, discussions integrate theoretical and methodological issues.

A number of chapters discusses whether varying definitions and varying operationalizations of writing ability are needed in various contexts, such as formative assessments versus summative assessments, large scale assessments versus individual assessments, different tasks, different genres, and different languages, but also different age groups.

Service-Learning and Writing: Paving the Way for Literacy(ies) through Community EngagementEdited by Isabel Baca

Service-learning and Writing: Paving the Way for Literacy(ies) through Community Engagement discusses service-learning as a teaching and learning method and its integration with writing. The various authors, from different disciplines and institutions, present service-learning as a means of having students practice writing in real world settings, and they show how relationship-building and partnerships between higher education and diverse communities produce benefits for all involved - the students, faculty, administrators, and the communities themselves. This volume demonstrates how writing instruction and/or writing practice can complement community engagement and outreach at local, national, and international contexts. Through different cross-cultural contexts and academic disciplines, the various authors explore reflection, assessment, internalization, diversity, and multiple literacies and their importance when integrating service-learning in higher education and community literacy.

Learning to Write Effectively: Current Trends in European Research

Edited by Mark Torrance, Denis Alamargot, Montserrat Castelló, Franck Ganier, Otto Kruse, Anne Mangen, Liliane Tolchinsky and Luuk van Waes

This book provides a detailed overview of current or recent research exploring a wide range of ideas, theories, and practices around written text production. European researchers from a broad range of disciplines brought together under the European Research Network on Learning to Write Effectively were instructed to contribute short papers summarising their current activity. The papers are grouped around the four main themes. The first deals with issues around the development of basic (“low-level”) writing skills, mainly in the early years of education. The second section focuses directly on issues around the teaching and learning of writing. This is divided into five parts that describe: evaluations of different forms of writing instruction, research exploring the processes by which writers learn, methods of text assessment in educational contexts, research exploring the effects of various learner and teacher variables on the development of writing skill, and conceptions of and variation in educational text genres. The third section reports research exploring effective document design. The final section has a main focus on tools for exploring the writing process.

University Writing: Selves and Texts in Academic Societies

Edited by Montserrat Castelló and Christiane Donahue

University Writing: Selves and Texts in Academic Societies examines new trends in the different theoretical perspectives (cognitive, social and cultural) and derived practices in the activity of writing in higher education. These perspectives are analyzed on the basis of their conceptualization of the object - academic and scientific writing; of the writers - their identities, attitudes and perspectives, be it students, teachers or researchers; and of the derived instructional practices - the ways in which the teaching-learning situations may be organized.

The volume samples writing research traditions and perspectives both in Europe and the United States, working on their situated nature and avoiding easy or superficial comparisons in order to enlarge our understanding of common problems and some emerging possibilities. In addition, the volume promotes a dialogue between these perspectives and traditions and, by addressing the identified needs and unsolved questions, bridges gaps and move forward in our knowledge regarding academic writing activities in higher education settings.

The Subjunctive Mood in Arabic Grammatical Thought

Arik Sadan, The Hebrew University of Jerusalem & Ben-Gurion University of the Negev

In The Subjunctive Mood in Arabic Grammatical Thought Arik Sadan outlines the grammatical theories on the naṣb (subjunctive mood) in Classical Arabic. Examining over 160 treatises written by 85 grammarians, lexicographers and Qurʾān commentators, the author defines and characterizes the opinions of medieval Arab grammarians concerning this mood in the verbal system of Classical Arabic. Special attention is given to the prominent early grammarians Sībawayhi (d. ca. 180/796) and al-Farrāʾ (d. 207/822), who represent the Schools of al-Baṣra and al-Kūfa respectively. The analysis of the grammarians’ views enables the author to draw several important conclusions and hypotheses on the syntactic environments of the subjunctive mood, the dialectal differences relating to its employment and the historical changes and developments it underwent.

The Foundations of Arabic Linguistics

Sībawayhi and Early Arabic Grammatical Theory

Edited by Amal Elesha Marogy, University of Cambridge. With a foreword by M.G. Carter, University of Sydney

This volume is intended as the first in a series of studies on traditional Arab linguistic theories concentrating on Sībawayhi and his grammatical legacy. Here, the reader is introduced to the major issues and themes that have determined the development of Arabic grammar and presents Sībawayhi in the context of his intellectual and social environment. The papers make significant contributions to and offer in-depth introductions into major aspects of the foundations of Arab Linguistics, early Syriac and medieval Hebrew linguistic traditions. This is a unique reference on the three main Semitic linguistic traditions, accompanied by a detailed analysis of some grammatical and pragmatic aspects of Kitāb Sībawayhi in the light of modern theories and scholarship.

Middle Arabic and Mixed Arabic

Diachrony and Synchrony

Edited by Liesbeth Zack and Arie Schippers, University of Amsterdam<

In recent scholarship, the connection between Middle Arabic and Mixed Arabic is studied in a more systematic way. The idea of studying these two varieties in one theoretical frame is quite new, and was initiated at the conferences of the International Association for the Study of Middle and Mixed Arabic (AIMA). At these conferences, the members of AIMA discuss the latest insights into the definition, terminology, and research methods of Middle and Mixed Arabic. Results of various discussions in this field are to be found in the present book, which contains articles describing and analysing the linguistic features of Muslim, Jewish and Christian Arabic texts (folklore, religious and linguistic literature) as well as the matters of mixed language and diglossia.

Wortatlas der arabischen Dialekte

Band III: Verben, Adjektive, Zeit und Zahlen

Peter Behnstedt and Manfred Woidich

The Wortatlas der arabischen Dialekte / Word Atlas of Arabic Dialects (WAD) intends to provide an unprecedented survey of the lexical richness and diversity of the Arabic dialects as spoken from Uzbekistan to Mauretania and Nigeria, from Malta to Sudan, and including the Ki-Nubi Creole as spoken in Uganda and Kenya. The multilingual word atlas will consist of three volumes in total with some 500 onomasiological maps in full colour. Each map presents a topic or notion and its equivalents in Arabic as collected from the dialectological literature (dictionaries, grammars, text collections, ethnographic reports, etc.), from the editors’ own field work, from questionnaires filled out by native speakers or by experts for a certain dialect region, and also from the internet. Polyglot legends in German, English, French, Spanish, Italian accompany the maps to facilitate further access. Each map is followed by a commentary in German, providing more details about the sources and the individual forms, and discussing semantic and etymological issues. All quotations are in their original language. The maps mainly show lexical types, detailed and concrete forms are given in the commentaries. An introduction is provided in both German and English and an index of all lexemes in the atlas will be available. The first volume Band I: Mensch, Natur, Fauna und Flora / Volume 1: Mankind, Nature, Fauna and Flora contains subjects such as ‘family members’, ‘professions’, ‘human qualities’. The second volume, Band II: Materielle Kultur, deals with material culture (‘house’, ‘utensils’, ‘food’, ‘clothing’, ‘vehicles’, etc.). The third volume Band III: Verben, Adjektive, Zeit und Zahlen focuses on verbs, adjectives and function words. The atlas will be indispensable for everyone interested in the modern spoken Arabic language, as well as for dialectologists and for semanticists.

A Descriptive and Comparative Grammar of Andalusi Arabic

Edited by the Institute of Islamic Studies of the University of Zaragoza

Andalusi Arabic is a close-knit bundle of Neo-Arabic dialects resulting from interference by Ibero-Romance stock and interaction of some Arabic dialects. These dialects are mostly Northern but there are also some Southern and hybrid ones, brought along to the Iberian Peninsula in the eighth century A.D. by an invading army of some thousands of Arab tribesmen who, in the company of a much larger number of partially Arabicized Berbers, all of them fighting men alone, succeeded in establishing Islamic political rule and Arab cultural supremacy for a long while over these lands. The study of Andalusi Arabic is of enormous interest to the Arabic dialectologist, as well as a subject of paramount importance to those concerned with the medieval literatures and cultures of Western Europe.

A Greek and Arabic Lexicon (GALex)

Materials for a Dictionary of the Mediaeval Translations from Greek into Arabic Fascicle 10 to

Edited by Gerhard Endress and Dimitri Gutas

From the eighth to the tenth century A.D., Greek scientific and philosophical works were translated wholesale into Arabic. A Greek and Arabic Lexicon is the first systematic attempt to present in an analytical, rationalized way our knowledge of the vocabulary of these translations. It is an indispensable reference tool for the study and understanding of Arabic scientific and philosophical language and literature, and for the knowledge of the vocabulary of Classical and Middle Greek and the reception and reading of classical Greek works in late antiquity and pre-Photian Byzantine literature.

Understanding Participant-Reference Shifts in the Book of JeremiahA Study of Exegetical Method and its Consequences for the Interpretation of Referential Incoherence

Oliver Glanz, VU University Amsterdam

In prophetic and poetic literature of the Old Testament references to textual participants are inconsistent with regard to their gender, number and person characteristics. Oliver Glanz for the first time provides a systematic study of the phenomenon of participant-reference shifts. The study is restricted to the book of Jeremiah and reflects upon the methodological conditions that should guide the analysis of participant-reference shifts.Focusing on computer assisted pattern recognition the research suggests that Jeremiah’s participant-reference shifts should not be understood from a diachronic perspective. Understanding the origin and function of participant-reference shifts rather from the perspective of syntax, text grammar and rhetorics proves to be more consistent with the textual evidence. With this insight participant-reference shifts no longer have to distort textual coherence.

The Role of Zion/Jerusalem in Isaiah 40-55: A Corpus-Linguistic Approach

Reinoud Oosting, Leiden University

In The Role of Zion/Jerusalem in Isaiah 40–55: A Corpus-Linguistic Approach Reinoud Oosting offers a linguistic and literary analysis of the Biblical Hebrew text of Isaiah 40-55, focusing on the depiction of Zion/Jerusalem in these chapters. The analysis shows that the designations ‘Zion’ and ‘Jerusalem’ are not used interchangeably but are instead two sides of the same coin. The name ‘Zion’ is related to the return of the Israelite exiles from Babylon, while the name ‘Jerusalem’ is related to the rebuilding of the city of Jerusalem. Concentrating on the linguistic and literary features of Isaiah 40-55, Reinoud Oosting proves that the signals in the text are extremely helpful for current readers to grasp the meaning of this ancient text.

The Book of Job in Form

A Literary Translation with Commentary

Jan P. Fokkelman

The Book of Job in Form presents to the reader a platform for a personal and intensive encounter with a great work of art. Its bilingual centre offers the text in Hebrew and English, and shows the forty poems in their original form, in 412 strophes and 165 stanzas. The commentary points out how these proportions and the remarkable precision of the poet (who counted syllables on all text levels) affect the thematics of the book, so that the portrait of the hero can be redrawn; his stubbornly defended integrity meets vindication and his last words, generally misunderstood, require a positive understanding. The poetry and its slim framework in prose are a unified composition which deserves a synchronic approach.

Das hebräische Partizip in den Texten aus der judäischen WüsteGregor Geiger

The function of the participle within the Hebrew tense system has considerably changed between biblical and postbiblical Hebrew. This investigation studies the participle in the Hebrew manuscripts from the Judaean Desert, its formation, its usage, and its meaning, compared with those in other Hebrew traditions and dialects, especially the language of the Hebrew Bible. The biblical Hebrew tense system continues to be used in the Scrolls, while there is a clear difference between the tense system of the Scrolls and that of mishnaic Hebrew. This fact allows us to draw conclusions in the field of language studies; but it also provides us with a piece of the puzzle in our understanding of the sociology and religion of the Qumran community.

Early Biblical Hebrew, Late Biblical Hebrew, and Linguistic VariabilityA Sociolinguistic Evaluation of the Linguistic Dating of Biblical Texts

By Dong-Hyuk Kim

In Early Biblical Hebrew, Late Biblical Hebrew, and Linguistic Variability, Dong-Hyuk Kim attempts to adjudicate between the two seemingly irreconcilable views over the linguistic dating of biblical texts. Whereas the traditional opinion, represented by Avi Hurvitz, believes that Late Biblical Hebrew was distinct from Early Biblical Hebrew and thus one can date biblical texts on linguistic grounds, the more recent view argues that Early and Late Biblical Hebrew were merely stylistic choices through the entire biblical period. Using the variationist approach of (historical) sociolinguistics and on the basis of the sociolinguistic concepts of linguistic variation and different types of language change, Kim convincingly argues that there is a third way of looking at the issue.

The Language of the New Testament

Context, History, and Development

Edited by Stanley E. Porter, McMaster Divinity College and Andrew W. Pitts, McMaster Divinity College

In The Language of the New Testament, Stanley E. Porter and Andrew W. Pitts assemble an international team of scholars whose work has focused on the Greek language of the earliest Christians. Each essay moves forward the current understanding of the context, history or development of the language of the New Testament. The first section of the volume focuses on the social contexts and registers that provide the environment for language use and selection. The second section deals with issues surrounding the history of the Greek language and how its evolution has impacted the Greek found within the New Testament.

Mapping Metaphorical Discourse in the Fourth Gospel

John’s Eternal King

Beth M. Stovell, St. Thomas University in Miami Gardens, Florida

In Mapping Metaphorical Discourse in the Fourth Gospel, Beth M. Stovell examines the metaphor of Jesus as king throughout the Fourth Gospel using an interdisciplinary metaphor theory incorporating cognitive and systemic functional linguistic approaches with literary approaches. Stovell argues that the theme of Jesus as king provides one of the unifying themes of John’s overall message. Examining the place of the Old Testament metaphors of Messiah, “eternal life/life of the age,” shepherd, and exaltation in the conceptual metaphorical network of John’s Gospel, Stovell asserts that John’s Gospel describes the just character of Jesus’ kingship, the subversion of power implicit in his crucified form of kingship, and the necessity of response to Jesus as king and his reign.

Bibliographie Raisonnée zu den Indo-Ariern im Alten Orient

Manfred Mayrhofer and Peter Raulwing

The topic of the Indo-Aryans in the ancient Near East has developed into a small, but fascinating research field as the enormous amount of publications indicates which has been produced from the late 19th century into the years of the new millennium. The Bibliographie Raisonnée zu den Indo-Ariern im Alten Orientt unifies and enlarges four bibliographies on this topic compiled by M. Mayrhofer between 1966 and 2006, now covering a time span from 1884 until 2011. This collection resumes the strictly linguistic approach of Die Indo-Arier im Alten Vorderasien (1966) within the cultural history and reception of the Indo-Aryans for over 125 years in Indo-European linguistics, Egyptology, Hittitology, ancient Near Eastern philology, Hurrian studies, Ugaritic studies, and Vedic studies.

Puzzling Out the Past

Studies in Northwest Semitic Languages and Literatures in Honor of Bruce Zuckerman

Edited by Marilyn J. Lundberg, West Semitic Research, Steven Fine, Yeshiva University, and Wayne T. Pitard, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

Bruce Zuckerman has transformed the way we look at ancient Semitic inscriptions. Through his efforts, the most important inscriptions of biblical times have been reread and the history of the biblical and Second Temple periods reimagined. He has made contributions to the fields of biblical studies and modern Judaism, and, in founding Maarav: A Journal for the Study of the Northwest Semitic Languages and Literatures, has made the research of many scholars available to the scholarly community. The series of articles included here honor his many contributions through discussions of a wide variety of inscriptional materials, Biblical texts, archaeology, lexicography and teaching methodology. Included in the volume is a republication of his path breaking exhibition catalogue, Puzzling Out the Past.

The peer-reviewed Journal of Jewish Languages (JJL) constitutes a venue for academic research in the multifaceted field of Jewish Languages. Jewish languages are the languages spoken and written by Jews in their communities around the world. Among these are Yiddish, Judeo-Spanish, Judeo-Arabic, Jewish Aramaic, Judeo-Italian, Judeo-French, Judeo-Provençal, Judeo-Persian, Jewish English, Jewish Malayalam and more. Although these belong to a variety of genealogical language families, Jewish languages have common linguistic features, thus constituting a distinct field of research. The Journal of Jewish Languages encourages comparative studies across the different Jewish languages as well as in-depth linguistic and philological research of the individual languages and their varieties. The JJL promotes studies that focus on diverse aspects, such as the interactions of these languages with other languages (especially Hebrew, Aramaic, and the surrounding non-Jewish languages), sociolinguistics, translation traditions, and more. Articles in this journal focus on medieval, modern, and contemporary Jewish languages and are based on manuscripts, printed material, orally transmitted translations, field work recordings, online speech samples, and other sources.

Research on Hebrew will be considered for publication in JJL only if it relates to other languages Jews have spoken or written.

The JJL encourages diverse methodological and theoretical approaches from dialectology, sociolinguistics, discourse analysis, historical linguistics, formal linguistics, philology, and other fields.

The Journal of Language Contact (JLC) is a peer-reviewed journal. It focuses on the study of language contact, language use and language change in accordance with a view of language contact whereby both empirical data (the precise description of languages and how they are used) and the resulting theoretical elaborations (hence the statement and analysis of new problems) become the primary engines for advancing our understanding of the nature of language. This involves linguistic, anthropological, historical, and cognitive factors. Such an approach makes a major new contribution to understanding language change at a time when there is a notable increase of interest and activity in this field.

International Review of Pragmatics

Managing Editor: Piotr Cap, University of LodzAssociate Editors: Bruce Fraser, Boston University, Michiel Leezenberg, University of Amsterdam, Marina Terkourafi, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and Ken Turner, University of Brighton

For more information: brill.com/irp

International Review of Pragmatics (IRP) is a new peer-reviewed international journal committed to publishing excellent research in the area of pragmatics and related disciplines pertaining to all aspects of human communication, verbal and non-verbal. It aims to provide a comprehensive and authoritative picture of the field, encouraging submissions rooted in different conceptions and perspectives originating in geographically diverse areas. IRP publishes full-length original articles, review articles and discussion notes.

While subscribing to the general view that all meaning is necessarily contextual, IRP welcomes research reflecting different, often conflicting, views of pragmatics. It is a forum for papers that analyze discourse in its many instantiations (spoken, written; institutional, business, media etc.) through a pragmatic lens, but also for those which consider pragmatics itself a separate discipline defined by specific objects of investigation (deixis, implicature, etc.). The confrontation is supposed to establish how much explanatory power in pragmatics rests in its interdisciplinary and semiotics-based variations, as opposed to self-contained methodologies with precisely delineated scope of application. Thus, in the long run, the aim of IRP will be to maintain a vigorous debate leading to crystallization of the core concept of pragmatics, and to evaluation of its descriptive and interpretive capacity.

Work on any language or language family is welcomed, as long as it bears on topics that are also of theoretical interest. A particular focus is on new developments in the field arising from the accumulation of extensive databases of dialect variation and typological distributions, spoken corpora, parallel texts, and comparative lexicons, which allow for the application of new types of quantitative approaches to diachronic linguistics. Moreover, the journal will serve as an outlet for increasingly important interdisciplinary work on such topics as the evolution of language, archaeology and linguistics (‘archaeolinguistics’), human genetic and linguistic prehistory, and the computational modeling of language dynamics.

The Journal of Greek Linguistics (JGL) is an established peer-reviewed international journal dedicated to the descriptive and theoretical study of the Greek language from its roots in Ancient Greek down to present-day dialects and varieties, including those spoken in Asia Minor, Cyprus, Tsakonia, and the Greek diaspora. It aims to offer a focused outlet for publication of first-class research in Greek Linguistics, broadly construed.

JGL’s goal is not only to reach linguists interested in the Greek language but also to engage the linguistics community and Hellenists more generally. The input to JGL will thus comprise any topic relevant to Greek linguistics, in the broadest sense, but with some preference given to material with wider relevance to specific subfields within linguistics proper. The intention is therefore on the one hand to encourage discussions and research that illuminate different aspects - theoretical, historical, and descriptive - of general linguistics using Greek data, and on the other hand to offer innovative solutions to problems and issues specific to the description and analysis of the Greek language.

Greek has played a central role in linguistics and the study of language for centuries. JGL will bring the language into a key position in current debate within Linguistics and related fields.

It actively endeavors to participate in the development of new scholarly approaches and problematics. In addition to original research articles in English and French (preferably), Arabica also publishes ‘notes and documents’, book reviews, and occasionally academic debates in its ‘methods and debates’ section. Special issues may deal with a specific theme, or publish the proceedings of a conference.

Aramaic Studies: the leading journal for Aramaic language and literature

The journal brings all aspects of the various forms of Aramaic and their literatures together to help shape the field of Aramaic Studies.

The journal, which has been the main platform for Targum and Peshitta Studies for some time, is now also the main outlet for the study of all Aramaic dialects, including the language and literatures of Old Aramaic, Achaemenid Aramaic, Palmyrene, Nabataean, Qumran Aramaic, Mandaic, Syriac, Rabbinic Aramaic, and Neo-Aramaic.

Aramaic Studies seeks contributions of a linguistic, literary, exegetical or theological nature for any of the dialects and periods involved, from detailed grammatical work to narrative analysis, from short notes to fundamental research. Reviews, seminars, conference proceedings, and bibliographical surveys are also featured. All contributions submitted to Aramaic Studies are subjected to peer review.

While almost every script of the relevant languages can be printed, Aramaic Studies encourages its authors to provide modern translations of quotations in any of these languages for the benefit of a wide readership, including biblical exegetes and historians whose field of expertise is not Aramaic.

The bibliographic section is sustained by the Semitic Institute at Kampen and the Peshitta Institute at Leiden.

The Journal of Persianate Studies is a publication of the Association for the Study of Persianate Societies. The journal publishes articles on the culture and civilization of the geographical area where Persian has historically been the dominant language or a major cultural force, encompassing Iran, Afghanistan and Tajikistan, as well as the Caucasus, Central Asia, the Indian Subcontinent, and parts of the former Ottoman Empire. Its focus on the linguistic, cultural and historical role and influence of Persian culture and Iranian civilization in this area is based on a recognition that knowledge flows from pre-existing facts but is also constructed and thus helps shape the present reality of the Persianate world. Such knowledge can mitigate the leveling effects of globalization as well as counteract the distortions of the area’s common historical memory and civilizational continuity by the divisive forces of modern nationalism and imperialism.
