Starting a new schoolStarting a new school can be an anxious time for anyone, but when it is in another country, it can be really scary, especially if you have to learn a new language.
Anna arrived in the UK from Italy when she was six. ‘I didn’t speak a word of English and everything seemed very strange. At first, I was miserable and wanted to return to Italy. However, many of the kids in my class had had the same problem and were keen to help me learn English. They and their parents were very welcoming and it didn’t take long for me to feel confident. I think I was quite lucky because my older sister, Zoella, found it much more difficult even though she spoke some English.’
Eugenio, Anna’s brother, was the oldest of the children and was sixteen when the family came to the UK. ‘In some ways it was harder than I expected, and easier in others. I already spoke English quite well, but that didn’t stop some of the other boys laughing at me when I made mistakes and there were some awkward moments when I came out with the wrong word or phrase. My way of dealing with it was to laugh with them. I soon made some great friends although I think that was mainly because I’m pretty good at football and helped the school team to win their first match in two years!’
Patrick is a teacher at the international school they all attend. ‘It can be very scary for young people going to any new school. But I think it helps that most of the kids in our school have been through the same thing. They understand the problems and the worries and are usually pleased to help any new arrival. Our students have also designed an advice sheet, which we send to all new students before they arrive. It contains everything from where to find things, who to see if there’s a problem, what clothes to wear and so on. We also have a welcome afternoon before they start school properly, when they can meet some of their future classmates.’

3 You are going to read an article about the history of fashion. Read the text and choose the correct answer (A, B or C).
1 People in prehistoric times
A made their clothes from animal products.
B wore different clothes depending on the
season.
C had clothes that were made to last a long time.
2 3,000 years ago men’s clothes were
A designed for comfort.
B generally made of animal skins.
C adapted to use for hunting and fighting.
The history of fashion
Since the origins of humankind, the earliest humans began to wear skins to protect themselves from the cold as they migrated further north, but even in prehistoric times different designs for men and women or social classes developed. Certainly, very few items of ancient clothing exist, but there are examples of Bronze Age clothing from Denmark which show that clothes were mainly made of woollen cloth or leather.
Almost 3,000 years ago, men were wearing woollen leggings, woollen cloaks or sleeveless coats and woollen hats. They also had accessories such as leather belts, which they used to attach their bronze swords to, and leather wrist guards (a kind of bracelet) to protect their arms from the bows they used to shoot arrows.
Jumping forward to the nineteenth century, fashion was very important to the rich. In the 1840s, men used to wear very tight trousers, waistcoats with high collars, neckties and knee-length frock coats. For the most part, they had long hair pulled to the side and most men had moustaches or beards. Women’s fashion in the UK was inspired by Queen Victoria, who wore high-necked full-length dresses. The more daring ladies wore low- cut dresses, sometimes off the shoulder, for evening parties.
By the end of the 1800s, men were wearing
something that we would recognise today – the three-piece suit. The longer frock coats were becoming a thing of the past and the very high collars were beginning to be worn turned down like on coats and shirts today. It was now fashionable for men to have short hair, however, they still had big moustaches.
Fashion in the 1920s witnessed a huge shift in style for women, but less obvious changes for men. Women’s dresses became shorter and simpler and as materials became cheaper and designs easier to reproduce at home, fashion became accessible to a wider public and less related to social status. The three-piece suit began to die out as younger men preferred to wear wide-legged trousers with light casual jackets in brighter colours than previously.
Fifty years later, in the 70s, ready-to-wear clothing was available in shops for everyone and women sometimes wore suits, although men’s clothing still remained quite traditional. Of course, all young people wore T-shirts and jeans and long hair was popular for both sexes, probably due to the influence of pop culture.
Fashion has been reflecting the world in which we live for millennia and has changed over that time, but probably never as fast as over the last 100 years. Today, people are free to wear almost anything that takes their fancy and fashion has become a vast global industry.

READING
3 You are going to read an article about the history of fashion. Read the text and choose the correct answer (A, B, C or D).
1 People in prehistoric times
A made their clothes from animal products.
B wore different clothes according to the season.
C had clothes that were made to last.
D didn’t follow fashions.
2 3,000 years ago men’s clothes were
A designed for comfort.
B made of a wide variety of fabrics.
C adapted for their practical needs.
D attractive and stylish.
The history of fashionSince the origins of humankind, the earliest humans began to wear skins to protect themselves from the cold as they migrated further north, but even in prehistoric times different designs for men and women or social classes developed. Certainly, very few items of ancient clothing exist, but there are examples of Bronze Age clothing from Denmark which show that their clothes were mainly made of woollen cloth or leather.
In the 1840s men used to wear very tight trousers, waistcoats with high collars, neckties and knee-length frock coats.

Space tourism
Guy Laliberté, the Canadian founder of Cirque du Soleil, travelled on a mission into space in 2009. Why did he do this? The main reason was because he wanted to raise people’s awareness about the lack of clean drinking water for so many people on our planet. To do this he spent a few days with scientists on the International Space Station. There, he produced a webcast from the station with himself and other artists who were working in different cities around the world.
However, some people criticised this initiative saying that his real purpose was to fulfil his desire to travel further than ever before and that the millions of dollars he had spent on the trip would have been better used to actually solve the water problem on Earth. To them, it seemed that an expensive trip into space was not really the best way to solve environmental issues. They also said that he was interested in the publicity this trip would generate for the circus.
He had to make the journey to the station on a Russian spacecraft and follow several months of training before he left. Although he was a very fit man, he found some of the exercises very difficult. For example, he had to sit on a chair and spin repeatedly round and round for ten minutes, which made him feel really sick. But when he finally got into space, he realised
why all the training had been necessary. He would have found it impossible to cope if he hadn’t had any instruction or training at all. It’s not a journey you can make without professional help.
Guy described the take-off as absolutely awesome and it only took 8.5 minutes to get from Earth to space, which was incredibly fast. Then zero gravity began. Guy and the astronauts would have started to float if they hadn’t been tied into their seats. This weightlessness causes space sickness as the blood goes to the brain. They gave them medicine to deal with that problem and they soon felt fine.
The landing was incredibly exciting. The temperature rose as the spacecraft went back down to Earth. When the parachutes opened, everything was shaking and spinning round, almost like being in a car accident. The final landing wasn’t soft, but Guy explained that if he ever had the opportunity, he would definitely do it all over again.
He took lots of photos looking back at Earth while he was on the space station. After he returned, he published them in a book and gave all the profits to the One Drop Foundation. Despite his critics, the trip did help advertise the charity. Being in space made him feel certain that we have to look after the environment and support people in need.

Home remedies
A Magnesium
Magnesium tablets are a great remedy for relieving the pain and reducing the tension of sore muscles, which can occasionally make your head hurt a great deal. So if you feel a bad headache coming, take at least 200 mg of magnesium when the pain begins and it should prevent it from getting worse. However, if you have kidney issues, you should make an appointment to see a doctor first.
B Oatmeal
Oatmeal has been used for centuries as a remedy for a variety of skin conditions. So, if you suffer from dry itchy skin and rashes, then try using oatmeal, something you often find in breakfast cereals. Put whole dry oats into a clean piece of cloth or a sock and tie the end tightly. Then drop it in a hot bath and leave it there for a while. Sit in the bath for up to twenty minutes and you will feel so much better. Your skin should start to improve too.
C Lemons and yoghurt
Did you know that lemon juice and yoghurt can help improve the smell of your breath? The juice kills the bacteria that cause the
smell and the plain yoghurt does the same thing, but leaves a nicer taste in your mouth. Apparently, it’ll keep your breath fresh for up to twenty-four hours. You don’t need to spend lots of money on mouthwash!
D Sugar or salt
Have you ever tried to hold your breath as long as you can to stop hiccups? Hiccups are a common, uncomfortable and embarrassing problem, but one thing which has a great effect in stopping them is sugar or salt. Just swallow one or two teaspoons of either – sugar is recommended because it tastes a whole lot nicer and is so much easier to swallow!
E Olive oil
Are your lips dry and cracked from the cold or too much sun? Try making your own lip remedy with olive oil and sugar. Mix them together to make a paste and rub it gently on your lips. You can also use the same mixture for your skin to protect it from extreme temperatures. And another wonder of this totally natural product is that the vitamin E it contains can repair nail damage. It will help your nails grow stronger and longer if you use a drop every day.

WRITING
4 Complete the book review with ONE word in each space.
Lots of people have asked me to suggest reading
books for learners of English. There are so many
available that it can be difficult to know which to
suggest to people. However, one of 1 popular
series of books is the Whoops Secret Agent books.
But is this series as good as2 ?
I was very 3 by the characters
and the stories. The stories are 4 and sometimes hilarious and
the main characters, seventeen-year-old Jake
and Sarah, are great 5 .
I 6 the jokes
they make and how they work together to solve
mysteries. The vocabulary of each book
is at a different level, so you can start enjoying the
series whatever your level of English.
The only 7 thing about the
books is that there isn’t a little dictionary at the
end. There are, however, short tests at the end of
each chapter to make sure you have understood
the story so far. 8 , some of
these are quite difficult to answer.
All 9 ,
I think that these books are worth reading.
I would 10 them to students of all
levels. To be honest, I think this is one of the best
series of books I’ve ever read.

School students often quiz me about how they can become a radio journalist. I’ve been employed by a national radio station for the last two years and I love it. I’ve never wanted to work as a reporter on a newspaper because radio was always far more my style. The spoken word can give so much more meaning to a story.
I’ve loved news since my father and I used to read the papers together when I was seven years old. He used to explain all the stories I didn’t understand and then we reported the most interesting ones to each other. I also used to chat to my grandmother about what was going on in the world. I think that’s when I recognised that I wanted to tell news stories to other people.
Nearly everyone in the profession today has a university degree but in the old days it wasn’t so necessary. What a good journalist must have is a real interest in finding stories that people will like and telling them in an entertaining way. Today people get their news from the radio, television or online sites. Print newspapers are far less popular than they once were and the stories need to be appealing because the income for these news sources comes from advertising.
The most important quality a journalist needs is a determination to succeed. It’s not an easy job and you have to work very hard constantly, often without the opportunity of promotion. Some people make the mistake of choosing this career because they want to meet famous people, but then find it too tedious and leave. I’ve got used to the routine and getting a special story once in a while makes up for it.
I tell young people that they must write regularly and, if possible, write for school newspapers or local magazines. These days many schools have a radio station, so that’s the best way to get a foot in the door. Employers like to see that someone has been developing their skills while they were still at school.
The best advice for young journalists is to ‘listen well’. Good radio journalists are not just good writers. They need to be able to listen to what people say and what they don’t say. In this way they can often find really incredible stories which nobody else has discovered. Every journalist wants to uncover the one story that no one else knows about.

READING
3 You are going to read a text about an unusual festival in England. For questions 1-7, choose from the paragraphs (A-E).
Which paragraph …
1 describes the characteristics of the cheese used in
the festival?
2 explains when the festival didn’t take place?
3 describes the international appeal of
the festival?
Cheese rolling, Cooper’s Hill, Gloucestershire
AThis unforgettable festival consists of a race following a cheese rolling down a hill while the crowd cheers the participants on. Some say that the tradition was started more than 2,000 years ago as an old winter festival which represented the birth of the New Year. Then, burning bushes were rolled down the hill rather than cheese. The first written evidence of it only dates from 1826, but local residents say that it was going on centuries before that.
BCooper’s Hill is a tiny village in rural England where, annually, people throw themselves down the very steep hill running after a 3.6 kg cheese, which is obviously round, otherwise it wouldn’t roll. By the time the cheese reaches the bottom of the hill, it is travelling at up to seventy miles per hour. It’s impossible to actually catch the cheese going at that speed, but the first person to get to the bottom of the hill is the winner and the prize is, of course, the cheese.
CThere are different races during the day for both men and women and in each one the heavy cheeses are set rolling by the master of ceremonies and the contestants begin to jump, fall, slide or somersault down the hill.
At the bottom of the hill, strong catchers are waiting to stop the participants before they crash or roll into the bushes and fence at the bottom of the slope. The cheese seems to survive better than many of the contestants.
DIt can be a very dangerous competition as the people can easily fall and even spectators can be hurt by either a cheese or a participant hitting them at great speed. Anywhere else it would be obligatory to wear head and limb protection, but not for the daredevils on Cooper’s Hill! Due to injuries and over-commercialisation, the event, which takes place in May each year, was officially cancelled in 2010 but since then, the unofficial version has continued. Even in 2020, when authorities had to prevent the race from happening due to the COVID-19 pandemic, a ceremonial cheese was rolled down the hill to keep up the tradition.
EPeople from around the world come to watch and take part in this strange tradition. Although locals clearly have an advantage as they can practise all year, winners include Americans, Australians, New Zealanders and even a Nepali. Strangely enough, the event seems to be very popular in Japan as there are usually a few Japanese TV companies broadcasting the race.
4 explains what was previously used instead of
cheese for this tradition?
5 describes the risks of watching or participating
in the race?
6 explains the origins of the festival?
7 describes the way the participants move?
