Dressed in black clothing, holding wooden sticks high above their heads, the 5 drummers entranced students and staff alike with their skilful and powerful drumming. Drumming in sync under the roof of the Undercroft, their deep-resonating drum rhythms reverberated throughout the College. It was an audio and visual experience and was a great showcase of a little-known but highly enriching aspect of Japanese culture. At one stage the female drummers were practically doing sit ups while they beat in sync on huge drums. Thank you to “Taiko On” for their exciting performance and to all the students and staff who came along to experience it. A number of students were fortunate to be able to take a mini-lesson on how to strike the drums by Simon-Sensei. The smiles on their faces said it all. Year 7 Petit-Dejeurner Français! On the 30th July, the Year 7 students studying French this semester, enjoyed an exciting petit-dejeuner français, a French breakfast, consisting of a toasty cheese and ham croissant, a chocolate and cream filled eclair and some orange, apple or tropical juice. My peers and I were challenged to order our delicious meal speaking only French. We quickly learned how to politely greet the server, order our breakfast and how to use our manners correctly. After speaking and ordering in French, we were all able to enjoy our petit-dejeuner français. Miam! (Yum!). On behalf of the whole class, I would like to say merci (thank you) to Mademoiselle Harrison, Mrs Wendy Duncan, the canteen assistants and everyone else who assisted with this délicieux (delicious) breakfast. Merci! Bonne journée et au revoir! Élloïse Erikson (7MB) Year 8 Japanese Excursion to the Hyogo Prefectural Government Cultural Centre On Wednesday 25th July, the Year 8 Japanese students went on an excursion to the Hyogo Japanese Cultural Centre. Hyogo is one of the 47 prefectures in Japan. Western Australia and Hyogo prefecture are sister states. At the Cultural Centre we looked at what a traditional home in Japan looks like. We also went into the classroom and we learnt how having a language can help us get a job when we’re older. We played some Japanese games and learnt that in Japan they don’t use signatures but use a stamp with their name on it. We then created our very own stamp. We also did calligraphy and drew some traditional characters from Japan. For lunch, everyone ordered an Obento box, with different compartments for different types of food such as rice, salad and meat. We had a great time visiting the Hyogo Cultural Centre and learning a bit more about the Japanese culture. Jessica Kavarnos (8DB) Petit-Déjeuner Français This week, the Year 8 French class had a very warm welcome to the start of Semester Two. Mademoiselle Harrison held a wonderful petit-dejeuner français (French breakfast) for Languages Week. There were smiles all around and many of us were very excited about eating food during class. The petit-dejeuner français consisted of some warm fluffy French bread rolls with Bonne Maman raspberry jam, some Petit Cremeux Lindt to add to some very hot chocolate. We all enjoyed this wonderful food and thank Mademoiselle Harrison very much. Merci beaucoup Mademoiselle. Maya Carey (MB08) Le Goûter On the last day of July, the Year 9 French class had the opportunity to have an authentic French goûter (meaning afternoon tea) with pains au chocolat, croissants and chocolate or cream cheese with chocolate milk. We were able to loosen up and have a friendly chat to one another, as well as enjoying a pleasant game of Pétanque. On behalf of the year 9 class, we would like to thank Mademoiselle Harrison for taking the time to organize the game and supply an overly generous amount of food. We all had an exceptional time, it was a great way to end off the day! Emelie Mathew (9GB) French Breakfast and Raclette During the Languages Week Mme Harrison decided to do some French original food. On Tuesday she proposed that we ate an original French breakfast and on Thursday a Raclette. So what is a French Breakfast? If you ask French people what they eat in the morning they will probably never answer that they eat meat, ham, egg or cheese because French people prefer to eat a sweet breakfast. It is usually composed of: an orange juice, tea, hot chocolate or coffee accompanied by bread with butter, jam or Nutella. We also have cereals and cookies. “Croissants” and “pains au chocolat” are usually eaten on the weekend by most French families. So, on Tuesday Mme Harrison brought some bread with butter, jam, some Swiss chocolate and hot chocolate. The Raclette is usually enjoyed in winter and especially during winter ski holidays. French people like la raclette because it’s a way to gather family and friends together. Raclette at home is different than raclette in a restaurant where there are halves of very big cheeses between 2 heating systems. When the cheese melts you scrape the cheese and put it on potatoes. At home we have small raclette appliances like we used in this French lesson. It’s really easy to use. You take a piece of cheese, and leave it for a few minutes in the raclette appliance. You can scrape your cheese onto some

potatoes, cold meats, bread etc. The Raclette that we shared in this French lesson was a wonderful experience. We ate some cheeses like Camembert and Gruyere, with “paté”, and cold meats such as ham and saucisson with some bread and potatoes. I hope that everyone enjoyed this experience. Fanny Morenne (French Exchange Student 11DB) Languages Week Quiz The Languages Week daily quiz questions were: Monday: What are the two Languages Year 7 and 8 can study at our College? Tuesday: How many times has France won the World Cup? Wednesday: How do you say Thank you in Japanese? Thursday: Describe what the Japanese flag looks like. Congratulations to our winners: Millie Richardson (7MA) Addison Squire (7EA) Leo Dubillon (7EB) Doone McGuigan (7EB) Anya Solaz McGann (7EA) Japanese VS French Languages Competition Year 7-8 Japanese and French Languages students have versed each other online on Language Perfect and the winning class is Year 07FRE#04. META Art Exhibition Hannah Jacob, from the Year 11 Certificate III in Visual Arts course, had her ceramic work selected for the META Exhibition. The opening night, held at North Metro TAFE, on Tuesday 31 July, saw Hannah presented with a Highly Commended Award for her sculpture. “My piece is based on cancer cells. I took influence from the sprouting sections of the disease, with the spherical structure being heavily influenced by Ernst Haeckel’s lithographic prints.”

Hannah’s sculpture demonstrates a high level of skill and a refined technique in handling clay and glazing. It will be on show later this term in our College’s exhibition Creations, along with many works completed by other students. We congratulate Hannah on her wonderful achievement. Catholic Performing Arts Festival Week two of the festival saw our vocal students perform solo pieces at Zenith Music, Claremont, on Tuesday. Students from Years 8 to 12 performed a variety of styles throughout the day to an enthusiastic audience. It can be extremely difficult to perform a solo piece and so we applaud all students that had the courage to do it and do it well!

The Years 10, 11 and 12 Rock Bands performed on Tuesday evening travelling all the way to Corpus Christi College, Bateman. The three bands showed a great amount of energy and talent. The audience was very well entertained!

This week we received notification that three of our ensembles received awards for their performances last week. Congratulations to the Flute Ensemble who received an Outstanding Award, the Wind Ensemble who received an Excellence Award and the Brass Ensemble who received a Merit Award.
