National Night Out

Thanks to a collaboration with the offices of Councilmember David E. Ryu and Councilmember Paul Krekorian, graffiti was removed and the Lankershim Pedestrian Tunnel was cleaned and now it is much improved. We look forward to continuing to work with the council offices to improve the tunnel’s lighting and create a sustained maintenance program.

As a result of an ongoing dialogue with our neighbors, NBCUniversal helped improve the flow of traffic at the intersection of Barham & Cahuenga Boulevards. This key improvement will:

• Improve traffic flow over the Barham Bridge to Cahuenga Boulevard West with a continuous green arrow unless a pedestrianis crossing.

• Create a safer pedestrian crossing over Cahuenga Boulevard Westwith a phased signal to make sure vehicles yield.

• Provide a dedicated and safer right turn for vehicles turning fromthe Barham Bridge onto Cahuenga Boulevard West.

In the Community

In April, over 1,000 employees volunteered to beautify North Hollywood High School and the Los Angeles River on Comcast Cares Day. As part of this special day of community service, a $25,000 donation was split amongst the school and nonprofit partners Friends of the L.A. River and City Year Los Angeles. This year we also sponsored the Greater Toluca Lake Neighborhood Council Earth Day, the Toluca Lake Chamber Pancake Breakfast where Minions greeted kids, the Taste of Studio City, Movies in the Park, and National Night Out, among other events in our community.

Will & Grace and Steve Harvey Join Other Fan Favorites on the Lot

TV and Film Production News What’s New on the Lot

Four new state-of-the-art soundstages will be available for use in early 2018. These new stages, which replace outdated facilities, are being built to handle new production demands. During a time when many television and movie productions have moved to other locations, these new facilities will help keep entertainment industry jobs in Los Angeles at Universal Studios.

The original cast of Will & Grace joined L.A. Mayor Eric Garcetti at Universal Studios’ newest soundstages to celebrate the return of this groundbreaking sitcom on NBC, eleven years after the show’s final episode. Steve Harvey’s new daytime talk show, Steve, is also taping on Stage 1 as of September this year as well as more than a dozen other shows filming on our lot including fan favorites The Voice, Superstore, Great News, The Good Place, and more.

What’s New at CityWalk

We made several major upgrades at CityWalk, including adding new popular eateries like VooDoo Doughnut, Mini Monster, Poke Bar, Dongpo Kitchen, Ludo Bird, Blaze Pizza, Jimmy Buffet’s Margaritaville and Menchie’s Frozen Yogurt.

Meet JenniferEmployee Spotlight

I joined Universal in 1996 as a tour guide and I’ve been here ever since. I enjoy the production process because it brings a new challenge every day.

One interesting thing about Universal is the fact that this season’s entire NBC “Must See TV” Thursday line-up is filmed on the lot. That’s four back-to-back programs, shot right here. When I’m not working, I’m a judge at color guard competitions for local schools (students who perform with colorful flags, often alongside marching bands). Every year I go to Dayton, Ohio for the color guard world championship. I never miss it!

Jennifer Oswald is Director of Stage & Backlot Operations at Universal Studios and a resident of Hollywood Knolls, adjacent to Universal Studios.

NBCUniversal had a record-setting year at the 27th Annual Environmental Media Awards, continuing to demonstrate our leadership in the production industry. EMA Green and Gold Seals were awarded to thirty-five NBCUniversal television and feature film productions, recognizing progress in sustainable production practices. This is the third year in a row NBCUniversal has received the most EMA Green Seals of any production studio. A few of the winning productions filmed on the Lot include Great News, Marlon, Pure Genius, Superstore, and The Good Place. Twelve of the acknowledgments were EMA Gold Seals, recognizing the top performing productions based on a new comprehensive sustainable production scorecard.

NBCUniversal was honored with the Cool Planet Award-Media Sector by The Climate Registry and Southern California Edison. According to The Climate Registry, the award “recognizes the valuable contribution of Southern California Edison business customers who demonstrate exemplary leadership in energy and carbon management.” The award was given for fifteen energy efficiency projects at Universal Studios from 2014 to 2017 saving the company approximately 6.2 million kilowatts annually.

Construction is underway for a new childcare center located in the middle of our property. We are proud to continually invest in our employees and their families by providing this new facility, which will accommodate twice as many children as the current building. Construction is slated to be complete in early 2018.

We’re nearly finished with an extensive upgrade to the County’s Fire Station 51 that serves the Universal Studios lot as well as the community. We expanded the station to accommodate a new Tiller Quint, a specialized fire truck that can be steered in both the front and the back. This allows the tiller to make sharp turns, which is helpful on narrow streets.

NBCUniversal Continues to Demonstrate Leadership in Sustainability

My job is to make sure that film and television productions at Universal have everything they need to be successful: soundstage and backlot space as well as props, costumes, parking passes… you name it! We are a one-stop shop for productions on our lot.
