One of a Kind: Yennsy, pronounced “JEN-see,” is the only Yennsy to ever play professional baseball. He is unrelated to fellow Lugnuts starter Denis Diaz.

1st Impression: Yennsy Diaz made his Midwest League debut on June 10 at Fort Wayne, replacing Patrick Murphy in the starting rotation. He struck out the side in the 1st inning, whiffing Jack Suwinski, Buddy Reed and Fernando Tatis, Jr. swinging. In the 2nd inning, he allowed a leadoff double to Brad Zunica, walked Hudson Potts and gave up a single to Reinaldo Ilarraza, but then set the next three batters down in order, finishing with a whiff of Rod Boykin, to strand the bases loaded. Diaz’s outing ended at 54 pitches.

Prospect Radar: Diaz enters the 2017 season rated the Blue Jays’ No. 25 prospect by MLB Pipeline (after being ranked No. 19 entering 2016) and the No. 28 prospect by Baseball America.

In Good Company: Baseball America ranked Diaz the No. 17 prospect in the 2016 Appalachian League, one of only two Bluefield Blue Jays on the list. The other was No. 1 prospect Vladimir Guerrero, Jr.

Quote Unquote: From MLB Pipeline, which rates Diaz’s fastball at 60, curve at 45, change at 50, control at 45 and overall at 45: “Though he’s an undersized right-hander, Diaz’s athleticism and fast arm generate a fastball that can reach 95-96 mph, though he typically operates in the low 90s. His heater has better movement -- sinking action, in particular -- in that range, though at times it does linger up in the zone. Diaz’s secondaries lag well behind his fastball, but he does have some feel for a breaking ball, and will flash an average changeup.”

Azua Background: Yennsy’s hometown of Azua, located near the southern coast and due west of the capital, Santo Domingo, has a population of approx. 128,000. Notable players from Azua: Maikel Franco, Neftali Feliz, Socrates Brito and Pedro Feliz.

No Stealing: Just six runners have attempted to steal bases against Diaz in his career, and only two have been successful - one in 2015 and one in 2016.

2015 Pro Debut: 18-year-old Yennsy’s first professional game came on June 3, 2015, in the Dominican Summer League; he suffered the loss, allowing two unearned runs in 2 1/3 innings in relief. After three more outings out of the bullpen, he was shifted to the rotation for six starts and caught fire. On July 13th, he struck out nine DSL Padres in five one-hit innings. One July 20th, he tossed six shutout innings against the DSL White Sox.

First Promotion: On July 30, 2015, Yennsy Diaz arrived in the U.S., pitching 1 2/3 innings in relief for the GCL Blue Jays. It was the first of five appearances in the GCL, capped by five shutout innings in a victory against the GCL Yankees to end the year on August 26.

2016 in Bluefield: Yennsy started the fifth game of advanced-rookie Bluefield’s Appalachian League season, working in a piggyback tandem with Jose Nova for his first four appearances (two starts / two relief) before breaking away. In his finest start of the year, August 2 at Burlington, he allowed only two hits and one walk in six shutout innings, striking out eight Royals.
