About half the country has made a NewYear’s resolution to get fit. The other half isthinking about it.With that in mind, I rang in 2011 with
my own resolution: to check out some of themost popular As Seen on TV exercise gizmosto see if they would do any good. With the help of a trio of personal
training/fitness specialists, I tested six piecesof equipment, each priced under $20. Twoturned out to be really worthwhile. The fourothers ranged from lousy to laughable.
Are these exercisegizmos a good fit?Ellen Warren | MCT News Service
GREAT INVESTMENTDELUXE SPEED ROPE (AKA JUMP ROPE), VALEO,
$12.95“I would take a jump rope any day over a $1,000
treadmill,” Perez says. You can go slow on a treadmilland get comfortable but when jumping rope, “You can’tcheat,” he says.“These have been around forever. That’s because
they’re effective. Jumping rope is as good as any cardioexercise you can do,” Shanahan says. “You can geta lot accomplished in a short amount of time,”
he says.Ellen says:“I’m now sold onjumping rope (por-
table, packable) butmy personal prefer-ence is a leather orsegmented jumprope. Learn more atwww.drjump.com.
YOUR HOME GYM?The experts I consulted say you don’t need expensive gear to get a thorough workout
at home. They recommend a high-quality jump rope for cardio. And to work all yourmuscles, invest in two quality resistance bands— one heavy, one medium— at $11 orso apiece. “What we’re saying is ‘keep it simple’ which is better than using all thesefancy toys,” says personal trainer Krissy Ray.Before you buy home exercise equipment:
• Go online and check the comments.• Consult with experts at a gym.• Think about the assembly. Who will do it? Howmuch will it cost?• Treadmills and stationary bikes can be picked up cheap at yard sales.• Keep it simple. Jump rope and resistance bands are cheap and effective.• Remember that fitness takes hard work. Period.
WORTH ITDUOWHEEL,
EVERLAST, $14.95“That thing’s
awesome,” says ex-ercise specialistSeth Shanahan, 27.“We really likethis,” Ray says. “I’ma frequent user,”chimes in trainerJesse Perez, 35. Infact, all three train-ers say the ab wheelis part of their fit-ness regime. Theypronounce this onesolidly made witheasy-to-understandinstructions.
BIGGEST WASTE OFMONEYSHAKEWEIGHT, $19.95“Go from flab to fabulous,” says the work-
out DVD that came with this device — themost expensive of the six in my test. “It’sa total gimmick,” says Krissy Ray, 24, oneof my three exercise consultants, all fromAdvocate Fitness. But if you want a good laugh, watch the
slow motion clip of the audience using ShakeWeights in the Sept. 16 “shared experience”segment on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.“This is filthy,” says Fallon guest, actressEmma Stone. “It’s practically pornographic.”(Watch it here: http://bit.ly/c3ce9P)
DEFINITELYNOTGEL FLEX TUBE, BALLY,
$11.95“A total bomb. Not
worth it,” says Shanahan. And he says the instruc-tion sheet is “stupid.” “Ev-erything you do on thisfeels really goofy. All themotions are unnatural,”agrees Ray, adding, “Theconcept is really garbage.”“This would not really
do anything,” Perez says.
GOOD IDEA BUT ...CHIN-UP/SIT-UP BAR, VALEO, $15.95Shanahan says a bar is one of his
favorite pieces of exercise equipmentbut this particular one “is a piece ofjunk.” When it’s wedged into a doorwayyou can’t use it for pull-ups — althoughinstructions show you can — becauseyour elbows hit the door frame. Also, the foam handgrips are mis-
placed, says Ray: “They made itwrong.”Other door frame products with
curved mounts solve the elbows prob-lem but check user comments onlinebefore buying to avoid problems.
DON’T BOTHERTWIST BOARD, EVERLAST, $12.99“What is this?” asks Perez, puzzled by
what this swiveling disc is supposed to do.Because it’s hard to stay balanced on thething, “It just makes everything more dan-gerous. You’d probably be better off doingexercises on the floor,” Ray says. “This thingis just weird,” she says.“If you’re on a budget there’s other things
you should spend your money on,” Shana-han says.

DownTimeOur pop culture experts tellus what’s on their radar
Ryan Adamsand theCardinalsI I I/ I V(PAX AM RECORDS)First things first — this
is not a new Ryan Adamsalbum. The tracks containedherein are leftovers fromthe “Easy Tiger” sessions of2007, and serve as a musi-cal time machine that disre-gards the singer’s last threeyears (and the “Cardinol-ogy” album). The unvaultedresult is a double-album ofstraightforward rock, andthe first Adams LP with theCardinals that avoids Grate-ful Dead-flavored countryentirely. As a Ryan Adams super-
fan, I see a multitude ofstrengths in the album anda few standout highlights, particularly the anthemicswagger of “Users,” and“The Crystal Skull,” a mid-tempo number short onIndiana Jones referencesbut features a terrific vocalperformance. Still, Adamscontinues to release what-ever he wants, with seem-ingly little in the way ofquality control. As such, unless you are a completeconvert, “III/IV” is ulti-mately an unnecessarilylong set of only pretty goodtunes that could have sur-vived as a web-only release.

The guys of post-hardcore band Silverstein are over-achievers. In the past decade they’ve been together, the Canadian guys have released four LPs, two EPs,a live DVD and other randommusical tidbits online. They’ve played all the biggest music fests, from the VansWarped Tour to Taste of Chaos to Australia’s Sound-wave.The band’s fifth studio album, “Transitions,” finds it
at its rawest, with a bevy of b-sides and rarities thatare pretty scream-y and heavy, but still work in poppychoruses and catchy rhythms. See the band tear it up atThe Loft in Lansing Friday, Jan. 28.

Lansing-based heavy metal outfit Occasus releases itsnew, self-titled CD on Saturday at Blackened Moon Con-cert Hall, and the album is loaded with bottom-heavyriffs and aggressive rhythms.Recorded in drummer and multi-instrumentalist Ray-
mond Crane’s home studio in DeWitt, the album findsOccasus in a different place than when the guys firststarted jamming in late 2008.“Our sound has changed drastically, but you can still
tell it’s us,” Crane said, who along with Ben Hamlin(guitar, vocals), Eric Potts (guitar, vocals), Sam Evans(vocals), Jamie Mosshart (bass, vocals) makes up Occa-sus.“A large part of the difference is the improvement
of playing skill in the individual members … I feel likean experienced player, but the whole attitude towardsmusic should be on improvement and bettering yourselfwhile still keeping it your passion.”Crane produced the album under his production com-
pany, Craneomatic.“My music growth has blown up not only as a musician
getting more serious about my skill level but as a behindthe scenes producer/recording artist,” he says.

Having been to the TheGreen Door on multiple occa-sions to enjoy the well-knownrotation of great live music, Iwas planning on being whollyunsurprised by my visit. Afterall, the place’s identity as thepremier blues bar of Lansingfeaturing music seven days aweek has been established forquite some time. What I didn’t realize is that
because the entertainment be-gins at 9:30 p.m. on most nights,I’d never been to the pre-musicGreen Door that exists between3 and 9 p.m. each day. Whoknew that people ate, drank andgathered at the bar for reasonsother than hearing great music? But they do. And it’s almost likebeing in a totally different bar.For starters, I’ve always been
impressed that for being knownas the hotspot for high-qualitylive music, The Green Dooris disarmingly unpretentious. However, take the hipsters offthe stage and turn on the lights, and it’s even less so. Betweenthe Miller Light banners, var-ious beer mirrors and rattlingceiling fan, if you didn’t knowwhere you were, you’d reallyhave to question the hip cat inthe bar’s logo.I was there on a Thursday,
which is half-off pizza night, and was among a crowd thatincluded college students, pairsof middle-aged folks and a tablefull of retirees. Apparently sucha mixed bag is par for thecourse regardless of the day.“We get quite a diverse group
of people,” said Kristine Shaw, who has worked at The GreenDoor for five years. “It kind ofthe depends on the band who’splaying each night, but we alsoget a lot of regulars who are justfrom the neighborhood.”Perhaps it’s this laid-back at-
mosphere, or the daily food anddrink specials that attract theneighbors even more than themusic. I found the pizza to bewell worth the visit, even sansmusic. And though some nightsdo feature acts that require acover, there is no cover onTuesdays through Thursdays orSunday — a must-know fact forneighborhood regulars. The Green Door often hosts
community events as well, giv-ing back to the neighborhoodthat supports them.“We’re very involved in the
community,” Shaw said.“Though we’re normally closedon Sunday afternoons, we’veopened to sponsor differentevents for families, police offi-cers who have been shot, or forthe Capital Area Blues Society.”Though there may be more
to The Green Door than justlive music, it certainly is mostlyabout live music. Everywhereyou look, band posters andshow announcements cover thewalls, and it’s hard to miss thestage and dance floor that takeup a good chunk of the interior.“We’re the only Lansing area
bar with live music seven days aweek,” Shaw said. “Most of thebands are local. Most the bandswho play here during the weekhave a blues feel or are coverbands from the ’70s and ’80s.”And on those nights — which
is to say every night — after thelights have dimmed and pizzaspecials have expired, there’s nodoubt that The Green Door isall about live music.

There are six people in the world thatknow what happened last weekend onmy ski trip to Caberfae Peaks near Cadil-lac, and it will remain that way. However,I’ll afford those of you reading a fewniblets of detail about the skiing portionof the weekend, as promised, because Ivalue your continued loyalty to both thiscolumn and my ridiculousness.Let me begin by saying that my athlet-
ic prowess has declined significantly inthe last five years, and more importantly,in the last twelve months. My once semi-chiseled physique courtesy of P90X haslong faded and atro-phied, and the oldbod’ just doesn’t takea beating like it usedto. Needless to say,I’m thrilled that theylist my age below. That may have to beremedied when thebig 3-0 gets here.Friday afternoon,
our group suited upin the massiveamounts of Dick’sSporting Goods gearwe’d purchased(mere hours before,in some cases) andheaded to the moun-tain. Several rookieerrors took place forme, almost immedi-ately.First, one should
always rememberthat snow equipmentis best worn with anempty bladder. Try-ing to relieve your-self in a public rest-room with the appar-el equivalent of an elephant on yourperson is not an experience I’d like tofrequent.Second, one should sit down while at-
tempting to strap into ski boots. I washeaving like I’d just run a 10K afterthree minutes of bent-over pushing andwheezing and shoving and … well, it wasless than attractive.By the time I’d made it out to the actu-
al lift, I was quite sweaty but filled withanticipation. I pulled down my 1974 skigoggles (thanks, Ma!) and boarded thechair lift. That’s right — totally skippedthe bunny hill.
My more experienced companion ad-vised against trying the bunny tow rope,as it would probably just damage myconfidence. A correct assumption. I had
my ass on that chairlift like a pro and wasriding up the side ofa mountain and feel-ing like Pikabo Streetwhen everything sud-denly seemedWAAAAYYYY biggerthan it looked fromthe bottom of the hill.I simultaneously real-ized that I was goingto have to dismountthe moving chair Iwas on with no ideahow to execute theaction. Cue blonde-in-borrowed-ski panic.I got off the lift. Ap-
pendages intact andready to barrel downthe Green Circle run,I took it half-speedand realized ... I cantotally swing this. The crisp six-de-
gree air and snowdusted my cheeks as Icruised down the hill, feeling accomplishedand exceedingly awe-
some. It did not faze me that childrenunder the age of five were speeding pastme on all sides. I was SKIING. A dozenor so runs later, it was time to headback to the lodge. Fingers and toes werenumb and I’d done enough squatting tomake my thighs burn for a week (trustme, it’s still happening).I’ll definitely ski again — and I’d really
recommend it to beginners. Conversely,I would NOT recommend night sleddingwhen the windchill is below 20, evenafter a few hot toddys.
