LA/OC SMTA President Message “I sent the club a wire stating, PLEASE ACCEPT MY RESIGNATION. I DON'T WANT TO BELONG TO ANY CLUB THAT WILL ACCEPT ME AS A MEMBER.” Groucho Marx “Trouble knocked at the door, but, hearing laughter, hurried away.” Benjamin Franklin On May 22nd, we will hold our first Panel Discussion on current trends in business and manufacturing that concern all of us in the electronics assem-bly industry. We are very fortunate to have distinguished members in our chapter making up this panel and to have Chelsey Drysdale of Circuits Assembly moderating this informative discussion. Hopefully, there will also be time for a Q&A session with the participating audience. This meeting will also be our Corporate Member Appreciation Dinner and kick-off to our Membership Drive for the rest of the year. The flyer enclosed in this newsletter and on our website can be used by our members and sup-porters to promote the SMTA benefits and the upcoming meeting. Anyone who brings in the flyer will be entered into our special drawing for a free membership (limited to current non-members only.) SMTA membership benefits will be presented as well as “Technology and Industry Trends” by Doug Dixon of Henkel Corporation. We appreciate that Doug will share with us the latest data and information available. Don’t miss this amazing event and sign up now at www.laocmsta.org. In June, we will be dark to prepare for our upcoming “SMTA/CCA Golf-Get Together” at Old Ranch Golf Course on Monday, July 28th. The volunteer committee is already at work organizing this to be the best golf outing and fund-raiser ever! As this is the month with the Focus on Membership, the many benefits of-fered by the SMTA are detailed here: http://www.smta.org/membership/benefits.cfm If you’ve had a chance to peruse through the above listing with all of the dis-counts, access to a huge archive of technical papers and networking oppor-tunities available to our members, it’s a no-brainer. Time to join and experi-ence the benefits for yourselves! On the local chapter level, you can see the hard work of the volunteers who make up the board. I know you may wonder how we can spare the time or have energy for the extra effort. Well, we feel good being a part of an asso-ciation that provides so much to its members for the small yearly fee it charges. What a great bargain!
Riki, Michelle, Kathy, Ron and Scott at SMTA Offi-cer Forum 2008. (Doug is busy ac-quiring other compa-nies.)

Tech Tip Dale Lee
Staff DFX Process Engineer Plexus Corp.
Thickening the trace that will be eroded during the soldering process will not stop the erosion proc-ess but it can help guard against loss of signal integrity and reliability issues in the final product. Thickening alternatives on wave solder side of PCB can include:
• Increased width of trace connections
• Addition of teardrop or snowman at trace egress from pad (shown below)
• Use solder mask defined pads
Lead Free Wave Solder Pad Trace Design The most common lead-free solder alloys (SAC305 and 405) erode copper much faster than tin-lead. These alloys can attack traces very rapidly. A recent study1 showed that after 10 seconds dwell on a SAC305 solder wave, 56% of the 5 mil trace that was exposed by solder mask relief was eroded.
While these options will increase the amount of time before trace reliability may be compromised, these options will not decrease copper dissolution rate in wave solder process and additional areas may be affected by extended exposure, i.e.- plated through hole pad knee.

Invitation to Start an SMTA Student Chapter
The SMTA is looking to start student chapters! The mission of SMTA student chapters is to build a network of students and professionals and to create learning opportunities for students to develop skills and knowledge necessary to work in electronic assembly technologies and related business operations.
A student chapter may be established at any post secondary school that supports sur-face mount technology, microelectronics, electronics packaging, or related industries via programs, courses, and/or activities. Only five student members are needed to start and maintain a student chapter. The student membership cost is $5.00 per year. You can find the application for an Associate (Student) membership on-line at http://www.smta.org/membership/membership_step_1.cfm. Membership puts students in touch with the many SMTA publications and services. It also provides student dis-counts on conferences along with many opportunities for professional development.
The details of operating an SMTA student chapter are quite simple and spelled out in the "SMTA Student Chapter Guidelines and Bylaws”.
If you would like to start an SMTA student chapter at your school, please complete the "Student Chapter Start-up Application Form" that is attached.
Thanks for considering the formation of an SMTA student chapter at your school!
Sincerely, Sis Sullivan Student Chapter Coordinator [email protected]
