Being painless and effective surgery for your obesity, Lap-Band® surgery or lap ban surgery is verymuch popular all over the world. With minimum rate of side effects and death ratio in the process of surgery, in almost 12 to 18 months you can lose up to 50% of your body weight by going for Lap-Band® surgery. The effects of Lap-Band® surgery or lap ban surgery vary from person to personwithout any side effects or vitamin or mineral deficiency. The time from lap after Lap-Band® surgeryis less and without much problem.

Procedure of Lap Band Surgery

In this surgery, a small pouch in the upper part of the stomach is created without stapling. A gastricband device is introduced through tiny (1cm) incisions in the abdomen and is placed around the upperpart of the stomach. The resulting pouch (or the "new stomach") dramatically reduces the functionalcapacity of the stomach. The band has a balloon from the inside that is adjustable and can reducestoma size, thus prolonging the period of fullness. The operation is performed under generalanesthesia and can last between 30 minutes and 1 hour. The Band is fitted around the uppermost partof the stomach, forming a 15cc small pouch. It is designed so that it can be inflated or deflated at anytime after the operation. This helps the patient continually lose weight until they reach their goals. Therestriction takes place in the radiology suite and normally takes 15 minutes. This simple lap band surgery procedure is painless. They inject saline into a port placed under the skin in the wall of thestomach. The tube that comes off of the band leads to the port.

Benefits of Lap Band Surgery

LAP-BAND® System is less invasive, less risky than laparoscopic gastric bypass, according to a five-

year study comparing the two most common weight-loss surgery procedures for the seriouslyoverweight presented at this year's American Society for Bariatric Surgery meeting by the seniorinvestigator of the study and Director of Oregon Weight loss Surgery, LLC (Portland, OR). The studyalso concluded that laparoscopic gastric bypass patients had significantly more major complicationsthan LAP-BAND® patients (10% vs. 5%, respectively). This observation was substantially differentfrom the finding in the 3-year report, where no significant difference in major complications appearedbetween laparoscopic gastric bypass and LAP-BAND® patients. The lap band surgery benefits are:

• No cutting of the stomach

• No stapling of the stomach

• Calibrated pouch and stoma size

• Can be adjusted to patient's needs after surgery with no operation to adjust the stoma

• Laparoscopic removal possible

• Fully reversible

• Short hospital stay (does not exceed 48 hours)• LAP-BAND® patients have decreased complication rates

Eligibility of Lap Band Surgery

The LAP-BAND procedure is a safe and effective weight loss solution, but weight loss surgery is not foreveryone who is overweight. Whether or not you are a good candidate for weight loss surgery is adecision that you and your doctor will make together. One of the most important measures of eligibility that your doctor will use is your Body Mass Index (BMI), a calculation based on your heightand weight. Your BMI classifies you as either overweight, obese, or morbidly obese and determines if you fall in the range to be considered for Lap-Band Surgery.

Your Body Mass Index (BMI) is a useful indicator of whether or not you are a good candidate for LAP-

BAND Surgery. In general, weight loss surgery and the LAP-BAND® procedure may be the rightapproach if your BMI is over 40. For some people with a BMI less than 40 who have obesity relatedhealth conditions, LAP-BAND Surgery may still be a good choice. Other than BMI, a good indicator is if you weigh twice your ideal weight or are at least 100 pounds overweight.

Some of the lap band surgery eligibility criteria that you need to fulfill are mentioned below:

- Your BMI is more than 40 or more than 35 with obesity related health conditions ***- You weigh twice your ideal weight or are at least 100 pounds overweight- You are between the ages of 18 and 60- You have been overweight for 5 years or more- You have been unable to lose weight thru diet and exercise- You do not have an illness that has caused you to be overweight

- You do not drink too much alcohol- You are committed to making changes in your diet and lifestyle- You are willing to continue working with and be monitored by your LAP-BAND doctor

How to Choose the Best Lap Band Surgeon?

Lap Band Surgeon plays a very pivotal role in the overall success of this weight loss surgery. A goodsurgeon would minimize the complications and the side effects so caused after the surgery. If you

want to select the best surgeon for your lap band surgery, be prepared to ask the following questionsto the person concerned:

- How many lap band surgeries have you performed?- Are you board-certified by the American Board of Surgery or the American Osteopathic Board

of Surgery?

- Are you a member of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery?- Will the surgery be performed in a Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence?- How many lap band surgeries have been performed in the hospital- What is my personal risk and benefit profile for this surgery?- Will another doctor be assisting during the surgery?

- Does the hospital have staffs that are trained specifically to care for weight loss surgery

patients?- Does the anesthesiologist have experience with obese patients- What support will be available after surgery?- Who will be covering for the surgeon when he or she is away?- Does the program help deal with insurance and other payment issues that may arise?

Importance of Diet after Lap Band Surgery

Merely getting the lap band surgery is not the sure short passport for achieving weight loss. Peopleneed to take a proper care of their diet as this was the main reason which leads to obesity among thepeople. The patient has to forget their previous eating habits and should concentrate on the eatingguidelines as put forward by their surgeon. If people don’t pay adequate attention to their lap band surgery diet, weight loss would not occur and complications would arise and the end result would bethat the person concerned would have to get re operated. Your diet will start to change before lap

band surgery with your pre-op diet. Your doctor will put you on a special diet to get your body readyfor surgery. After surgery, your diet will progress from liquids to soft foods until you are able to eatsolid foods over the six week recovery period. It is important to follow your doctor's nutritionalguidelines and food recommendations to get the most out of your lap band and maximize weight loss.If you overeat, the food will come up and out. Most lap band patients have had one or twoexperiences that teach them to eat slowly, chew food well, and not eat too much.

One Week Diet before Lap Band Surgery

In the months before lap band surgery, you will be expected to start making changes to your diet. Thepre-surgery diet will help prepare your body for the upcoming surgery - to reduce body fat in andaround the liver, to help preserve and protect muscle tissue, improve recovery, increase rate of weightloss, and help you prepare for the post-op diet. When it is just one week away for the lap bandsurgery, it is advised that people don’t consume any kind of solid food or that contains a lot of fat andcalorie in them. It would be best if the person is on liquid diet only because it would reduce the

element of fat around the liver and the person would be ready to get the silicon and attached to theirstomach. Drink as much water as possible because it would help the body to remain hydrated andwould provide the optimum environment to get the surgery done with minimum complications. Yoursurgeon will have you begin a special pre-op diet that is designed to get your body ready for surgeryand make recovery easier.

Diet Just After Lap Band Surgery

Right after the lap band surgery, it is recommended that the patient is not eating anything for thatparticular day. The only thing that they do is to sip water in small amount or suck water out from anice cube. The reason being is that the band attached to the stomach is pretty tight and hence it wouldnot allow any kind of solid food. Apart from water, you can take in some juice but make sure that youdon’t over consume it because it would then cause giddiness and nausea and end up with vomiting.Although you may be tempted to splurge on all your favorite foods, this is not the time to let yourhealth worsen. Foods that will need to be decreased in your diet include high-sugar foods, highcarbohydrate foods (including bread and pasta), fats (such as butter), fatty meats, fried foods, wholemilk products, high-calories beverages (including regular soda and alcoholic beverages).

1st 2 Weeks Diet After Lap Band Surgery

Your stomach will only tolerate liquids at this time. It’s important to also stay hydrated by drinking lots

of water. Drinking small amounts frequently may help you avoid vomiting. In the early weeks it'simportant not to stretch the small stomach pouch above the band. Vomiting can do this, so it isimportant not to vomit, as this can also increase the chance of stomach tissue slipping up through theband. During this time, only thin liquids can be tolerated. It’s important to keep hydrated with lots of water. Other liquids recommended during this phase include:

- Clear broth or soup (with no vegetables or meat and not creamy)- Skim milk- Fruit juice- No-sugar added popsicles

When you are in the position of taking soft food then at that time do not take alcohol before and aftermeal. It may cause vomiting and vomiting cause slippage of band. So in leisure time drink alcohol. One think keep in mind you are going to drink alcohol that is weight loss surgery patients will getdrunk more quickly than others. After taking small quantity you may feel dull as patients may get highblood alcohol levels. So after taking a right decision from doctors and checking body position, start

taking alcohol. Alcohol interferes with the absorption of fat, so it can also interfere with the absorptionof fat soluble vitamins like A, E, and D. Lap band patients sometimes have difficulty getting enoughvitamins due to their low food intake, so dietitians often advise them not to drink alcohol that willfurther limit their vitamin intake.

One of the side effects you will sometimes see with a lap band is vomiting. Air is injected to yourstomach prior to the lap band procedure. The air is removed, however a tiny bit does sometimesremain and can cause the bloated feeling and burping or the vomiting of air. More common though is
