Innovations at the Hannover Messe trade show

Stuttgart, 28 February 2011

At the 2011 Hannover Messe trade show, the Stuttgart, Germany-based Lapp Group is exhibiting a number of new products that demonstrate its capacity for innovation. One of the highlights of the company’s main stand (C03, Hall 11) is the latest EPIC® industrial connector product. This is a 100% scratch, impact and corrosion-resistant right-angle connector housing, which is ideal for use in extreme environments such as those encountered by offshore wind farms. When used in conjunction with the SKINTOP® brush cable gland, the connector is completely electromagnetic-interference-proof.

The new housing combines a number of benefits. The SKINTOP® cable gland is fully integrated into the design, ensuring excellent seal integrity, strain relief, and ease of installation, while a recessed lip seal provides better protection against mechanical damage. In simple terms, the new housing now offers even better protection for sheathed and shielded cables and connectors.

Another important characteristic of the new panel and surface mount bases is that they have the same design footprint as earlier housings, and the upper hood is also interchangeable with earlier versions. “This is something that is unique in the market,” says product manager

Guido Ege. “If customers want to increase the level of security and protection, they don’t need to buy whole new set of components, they can just replace the old housing with one of our new ones.” One of the focal points of this year’s Hannover Messe show is electric vehicles. The Lapp Group’s LAPP CHARGE charging system, developed in conjunction with Bals Elektrotechnik, will be on display both on the Lapp stand in Hall 11, and in the dedicated “e-Mobility” section in Hall 25. The system combines a highly ergonomic design with an array of safety features, and its look and colour scheme can be tailored to suit the customer’s requirements. LAPP CHARGE complies with the VDE standard, which is supported by a number of prestigious car manufacturers.

Lapp’s range of electric transport products also includes special patented high-voltage cables for use in a new generation of battery-powered vehicles. These are compatible with a variety of connection technologies to suit customer specifications.

Automotive components supplier Continental is already using special Lapp cabling and connectors in the lithium-ion hybrid batteries it manufactures for the new Mercedes-Benz S 400 BlueHYBRID. Lapp is also collaborating with respected companies that are working on new battery systems designed to store electricity more efficiently.

The third key area of innovations is automation solutions. Lapp has expanded its range of fieldbus products with the

addition of the EPIC® data connector with fast connection, and highly flexible bus cables suitable for use in drag chains. The UNITRONIC® fieldbus range also includes active sensor/actuator modules for all standard bus systems used around the world, together with the field wiring and gateways needed to connect them to higher-level Ethernet networks.

Lapp has expanded its offering for the renewable energy sector with a new type of cable for voltages up to 1.8/3 kV. The ÖLFLEX® TRAFO XLV complements the existing range of cabling products, and means that Lapp Kabel now offers a full range of integrated solutions for the solar and wind power industries. The new cable was originally designed to connect solar inverters to medium-voltage transformers, so that the electricity can be supplied directly to the high-voltage grid. However, it is also suitable for a wide range of other applications both in the energy sector and in mechanical and plant engineering. It can be laid underground with no additional protection, has an operating temperature range of -40 to +100°C, and features an electron beam cross-linked insulation that makes it highly resistant to UV, ozone and environmental stresses. In torsion testing, the ÖLFLEX® TRAFO XLV withstood 5,000 twisting cycles with no damage, making it an ideal choice for solar facilities in all climatic conditions and as a power cable running from the towers to the nacelle of wind turbines.
