ASSESSING YOURSELF AND YOUR CAREER

Career choice is one of the most important, yet difficult decisions you’ll ever have to make. You’ll s pend at least eight hours a day at work, so it’s e ssential you make a well-informed decision. In order to make a dec ision you’ll be happy with, care er planning can be helpful. Career planning is a lifelong process, which includes choosing an occupation, getting a job, grow ing in a job, changing careers, and eventually retiring. This may happen once in your lifetime, but it is more l ikely to happen several times as you first define and then redefine yourself and your goals. Career planning also involves eval uating your career goals and how they fit with your lif e goals. It’s assess ing your interests, financial needs and geographical living requirements. It’s determ ining what you need to do to be happy, healthy and able to meet your fina ncial obligations.

WHAT TO CONSIDER WHEN DEVELOPING YOUR CAREER PLAN

Core Expertise: What are your skills? Are you go od with logic? Organization? Do you have techn ical skills, such as working with computers or mechanics? Do you ha ve experience in a specific field?

Personal Desires: Do you want a balance between work, family a nd friends? Do you need quality personal time? Is it important to you to work for a company that is socially responsible? Do you desire to work at home, or in a small or a large company setting?

Current & Future Financial Needs: What do you really need, as opposed to really want? Th ink about your current and long-term financial needs.

Health: Do you have ph ysical limitations? How much physical energy are you willing to exert in a job? Ke ep these answers in mind when applying for jobs that require physical ability, such as lifting, working on an assembly line—or even sitting at a computer all day.

Geographic Location: Where do you want to live? Rem ember: computers and the Internet make communicating much easier today, and offer pe ople more flexibility in where they work a nd live.

CAREER PLANNING PROCESS

Assess yourself: Figure out where you are before you think about where you’re going. If you haven’t alre ady, try taking an assessment. Assessments are tools to help you discover important details about yourself. Career assessments identify poss ible careers based on your interests, skills, and work style.

Whether or not you choose to take an assessment, think about a career path you want to take. Consider past experiences that you feel were particularly rewarding—jobs, volunteer activities, school, or a hobby. Make a list of these experiences and identify why they were so satisfying. Think about other experiences that could provide the same sort of satisfaction.

Explore career options: Before you make any big c areer decisions, take advantage of the informati on that’s available. Th is information can help you answer questions such as: What careers do you find inter esting? How much education and training will you need for certain jobs? Will you need a license? What are the physical demands for certain jobs? Do you want to be the b oss?

Set career goals: After assessing yourself and e xploring your career options, you should set career goals. Career goals are ideas about what you want to acco mplish. Defining your goals will help you take the necessary steps to your career. Remember that you can have as many career goals as you want and that you can ch ange your goals anytime. Once you re ach your career goals, it is essential to set new goals that motivate you to keep learning and striving for satisfaction. Remember, the world of work changes quickly and so do you; repeat these steps as needed to develop new skills and preferences.

Create an action plan: To set your career plan in motion, you will need to follow throu gh with what you’ve learned thus far and take advantage of the r esources around you. For examp le, you may want to take some of the following actions: investigate sources of additional training and education, develop a job search s trategy, write yo ur resume, exp lore potential employers, compose cover letters, and prepare for job interviews.

CAREER PATHS

One initial action plan you can take right now is to check out career paths. Career paths are groupings of occupations that require different levels of education traini ng. There are six career paths that can help you identify a career focus without being locked into a specific occupation. You don’t have to cho ose a specific occupation today, but you can learn about career paths and opportunities in them.

By exploring different career paths, you’ll see h ow math, science, language arts, and soc ial studies are important in lots of careers. If you see a co nnection between your education/ training preparation and the world of work, chances are your education and career training will be more meaningful to you.

What are the six career paths?

Arts & Communication: Occupations in this path are related to humanities and the performing, visual, liter ary and media arts. These include architecture, graphic design (interior and fashion), writing, film, fine arts, journal ism, languages, media, advert ising, and public relations.

Business, Management & Technology: Occupations in this path are related to the business environment. These include entrepreneurship, sales, marketing, computer/information systems, finance, accounting, personnel, economics, and management.

Health Services: Occupations in this path are related to the promotion of health and treat ment of disease. These include research, prevention, treatment, and re lated health technologies.

Human Services: Occupations in th is path are related to economic, political, and social systems. These include education, government, law and law enforcement, leisure and recreation, military, reli gion, childcare, social services, and personal services.

Industrial & Engineering Technology: Occupations in this path are related to technologies necessary to design, develop, install, and main tain physical systems. These include engineering, manufacturing, construction, service, and related technologies.

Natural Resources & Agriculture: Occupations in this path are related to agr iculture, the environ ment, and natural resources. These include agricultural sciences, earth sciences, environmental sciences, fisheries, forestry, horticulture, and wildlife.

Now that you have an u nderstanding of career paths, you can begin to discover which one might be right for you. The following exercise allows you to choose activities, interests, personal qualities, and school subjects to determine which career path might be the best fit.

Now that you know what some of your interests, abilities, and talents are, take another look at the career paths descriptions. Which three career paths do you think best match your strengths?

1.

2.

3.

These paths you’ve selected are just a starting point. As you find out more about career paths and occupations in them, you may decide that your strengths are best suited to a different career path.

It would be a good idea to review your education/training plan with your school or career counselor. If you have not yet developed one, talk to your counselor about doing so. As you look at your plan, ask which paths can help you gain the knowledge and skills in the career you are exploring. As you move through life, even if your direction changes, many of the skills and the knowledge you learn can transfer to other career paths. Looking at your plan of study through the lens of career paths can help provide a more relevant purpose to your career goals. Additional groupings for career planning can be seen through career clusters and career pathways. The model on the following page provides more details about the relationship between career paths, clusters and pathways.

CAREER PATHS, CLUSTERS & PATHWAYS

Career Paths

The six Career Paths help students become aware of and explore care ers in a logical and meaningful way.

Career Clusters

Missouri uses 16 Career Clusters as a way of organ izing occupations and careers to assist educators in tailoring coursework and related activities for all students. T he Career Clusters include all occupations, even those not usually found in career and technical education. Career Clusters may be used beginning in grades 7, 8 or 9, and can continue as a framework for educational planning through postsecondary education.

Career Pathways

Occupations within a Career Cluster are further grouped accordi ng to shared commonalities such as skill sets or common roles. This grouping is called a Career Pathway. Each cluster contains two to seven Career Pathway s.

The Laquey R-V School District conti nues to develop programs to assist all students in choosing and preparing for rewarding careers. A general high school program of studies is simply not enough preparation for today’s colleges or for employment in today’s complex workplace. The program of studies must be carefully planned and selected to help ensure that studen ts may attain their g oals.

The A+ Schools program has initiated a program of CAREER PATHWAYS to give FOCUS and DIRECTION to the selection of a high school course of study and to best assist students in achieving whatever goal has been chosen. All high school students will be asked to focus on a CAREER PATHWAY.

Page 8: LAQUEY R-V HIGH SCHOOL Career Planner 2013-2014 Career Book1.pdf · 1 - LAQUEY R-V HIGH SCHOOL Career Planner 2013-2014. TABLE OF. CONTENTS. Beyond High. School .....2. How to Use

CHOOSING A CAREER PATHWAY

The A+ Schools program has initiated a program of CAREER PATHWAYS to give FOCUS and DIRECTION to the selection of a high school course of study and to best assist students in achieving whatever goal has been chosen. All high school students will be asked to focus on a CAREER PATHWAY.

As a part of the A+ Schools program, each stud ent, working with par ents, advisory teachers and counselors, will develop a course of study centered on one of the six broad career pathways. The course of study may reflect a general area of interest such as health services, or it may concentrate on a specific occupational goal such as becoming a respiratory therapist or a registered nurse. The following activities will enable students to achieve a designated career pathway:

• LHS students will be involved in activiti es designed to expand awareness of a variety of careers.• In the ninth grade a student will be able to choose a career pathway by considering personal interests,

personality and strengths. The student will then develop a four-year plan by se lecting the courses that are relevant to the variety of occupati ons in the chosen career pathway.

• The four-year plan will be review ed each year and modified if needed.• Activities to explore careers will contin ue throughout high school.

A career pathway choice is not a permanent commitment. As students mature and have new experiences, they will learn new things about themselves and may want to change career pathways. If a student decides on a new pathway, this should be discussed with the advisory teach er or counselor so the student’s four-year plan may be adjusted.

CAREER PATHWAYS

Career Pathways are clusters of occupations or careers that are categ orized because many of the people in each one share similar interests, abilities and strengths. You should note the variety of occupations in each pathway which require various levels of training and education. The possible occupations listed in the different career pathways on the following pages are only a very small po rtion of the vast number of occupations in each.

ARTS AND COMMUNICATIONAre you creative? Imaginative? Innovative? Do you like being original? This pathway prepares students for occupations related to the humaniti es and the performing, visual, literary and media arts.

BUSINESS, MANAGEM ENT AND TECHNOLOGYAre you an organizer? Leader? Planner? Are you a good communicator? Do you follow through and persist to see the end product? This pathway prepares students for occupations related to the business environment.

HEALTH SERVICESDo you like to help people who are sick? Help people to stay well? Are you interested in the medical field, how the human body works? This pathway prepares students for occupations related to thepromotion of health a nd the prevention and treatment of disease.

HUMAN SERVICESAre you outgoing? Open? Friendly? Do others consider you understanding and cooperative? This pathway prepares students for occupati ons related to economic, political and social systems.

INDUSTRIAL AND ENGINEERING TECHNOLOGYAre you mechanically inclined? Practical? Like to use your hands and build things? Find out how things work? This pathway prepares students for occu pations related to the tech nologies necessary to design, develop, install or maintain physical systems.

NATURAL RESOURCESDo you like the outdoors? Interested in plants and animals? Curious about the physical world? Like to observe, investigate and solve problems? This pathway prepares students for occupations relatedto the environment and na tural resources.

The following steps in the appeals process will be strictly adhered to:

1. The part icipant has 7 calendar days from the date of notification to file a w ritten appeal with the A+ Coordinator.
