EA Hydrology
āFuel cells can be an ideal solution for powering most types of EA Hydrometry equipment. The EFOY Proās ability to run in either 12 or 24VDC and its all-weather capability makes it a very useful tool. With the right type of housing the Pro can be deployed anywhere that monitoring is required.āChris Barber, EA Hydrology

Available Fuel Cell SystemsThis central section is predominantly hydrogen fuel cell technology. It encompasses the fuel cell buses, cars and fork lifts as well as smaller buildings.
The primary issue for these applications is how to get the hydrogen to the system.

Rotherham EECT
When energy consultants TNEI were asked to create the UK's first fully-hybridised, stand-alone and completely 'green' hydrogen mini-grid, Fuel Cell Systems Ltd were called upon to specify, supply, install and commission the fuel cell system designed to co-power the new Environmental Energy Technology Centre (EETC) in Rotherham, South Yorkshire.

Government Target: effectively zero tailpipe emissions for UK car fleet by 2050
Fuel Cell vehicles are highly likely to play a strategic role in meeting this target. OLEV funding given to increase fuel cell car uptake across all manufacturers.
And fuel cell vehicles?
ā40,000 deaths each year in the UK are attributable to exposure to outdoor air pollution. It is also
evident that it is disproportionately the poorest of our communities
which are most exposed and vulnerable to air pollution.ā

UK H2 Mobility Target:
Current publicly accessible sites: Heathrow, Hendon, Swindon (Honda), Teddington,
Rainham, Rotherham, Aberdeen, Beaconsfield
Plans in place for another 5-10 but at approx. 2 years per installation, the UK is way behind target.
Both Toyota and Hyundai have stated that lack of infrastructure has limited vehicle deployment.

Larger stationary powerPalestra Building, Southwark- Ā£2.4M 200kW Combined Heat and Power (CHP) plant, provides electricity, heat and cooling, and hot water to the building. - At times of peak energy use, the building generates a quarter of its own power, rising to 100 per cent off-peak.- Cuts carbon emissions by up to 40 per cent and generates Ā£90,000 cost savings per annum. - Payback period of 10 years.
20 Fenchurch Street, EC3- The Fuel Cell at 20 Fenchurch Street generates 300kW of low carbon, low emissions electricity- The Fuel Cell is integrated into a Combined Cooling, Heat & Power (CCHP) configuration to efficiently support the buildingās essential services- Conservatively, the Fuel Cell will reduce the carbon dioxide emissions of the building by at least 270 tonnes per annum
DIMES feasibility study
This 12 month feasibility project investigated the techno-commercial benefits of integrating energy infrastructure with clean transport within the urban area of Bicester.
The conclusions were that fuel cell installations are more expensive than the incumbent technologies but are still profitable for the appointed ESCo under a thirty year management concession. In addition, the emissions for CO2, NOx, SOx and particulates are much lower than the incumbent technologies.
Fuel cells represent an additional distributed heat
and power technology which can considerably lower emissions with a
tolerable increased spend.
DIMES modellingScenario 1 (the DIMES approach) with larger fuel cell installation (2 x 1400kWe / 1043 kWth) and back up gas boilers (4 x 2000 kWe) was the most expensive to install and arguably overspecced for the specified site needs. It did have the lowest emissions by a considerable amount.
Scenario 2 (the Jigsaw approach) combined two smaller fuel cell units (2 x 400 kWe / 360 kWth), with some gas CHPs (1 x 530 kWe / 687 kWth, 1 x 210 kWe / 269 kWth) as well as the back up gas boilers (4 x 2000 kWe). For the specified site, this combination looked to provide a good middle-ground between cost and lower emissions.
Scenario 3 (the Baseline approach) used only incumbent technology: Gas CHPs (1 x 1200 kWe/1192 kWth, 1 x 210 kWe / 269 kWth) and gas boilers (4 x 2000 kWe). This would represent a fairly typical distributed energy installation today ā itās the cheapest but has the highest emissions.
Scenario 4 (H2 Economy approach) would require additional equipment installation beyond the scope of the business case in order to store and dispense the offtake of hydrogen fuel for use in local transportation. It is technically feasible but more expensive than scenario 1. However, deployment of equipment as defined in Scenario 1 would retain the option of future expansion for hydrogen fuel storage and dispensing, also potentially enabling localised grid-balancing.
Fuel Cell Power for Urban Developments
Flexibility of installation ā¢ Modular set-up to multi-MW, allowing for necessary redundancy
ā¢ Choice of fuel, including natural gas and biogas
Flexibility of output ā¢ Power only (20 year PPA available)
ā¢ Heat and power
ā¢ Heat, power and hydrogen offtake for vehicles
Higher efficiencies ā¢ In addition to utilising the heat and electricity, waste water from the fuel cell
can be reused in the grey water system in the development, escalating the
BREEAM rating
Virtually zero emissions ā¢ Better air quality, especially in terms of low NOx
ā¢ Far less carbon emitted than from the combustion of gas in a CHP engine
Aid planning applications ā¢ Compatible with 2017 National House Builders Council specifications
Workable financials
Horizon 2020 - ElectrouEU funding has been approved for a 1.6 MW installation in London
- High-profile, 5-year development just North of Kings Cross station
- Funding from the European Commission under their Horizon 2020 programme
The installation will provide a low-emission power solution for some of the 50 new buildings and the 1900 homes in the development. FCSL will liaise with all partners to ensure a successful build and onward dissemination.

Horizon 2020 - ElectrouThe Local Planning Authority had stipulated that the site must have a fuel cell installed (a minimum of 250kW).
The site already has District Heating using incumbent technology gas engines.
The developers correctly ascertained that 250kW wouldnāt be useful for a site of this size and wanted to install a fuel cell that would truly have an impact instead.
Similarly to the DIMES outcomes, the financials just worked for the fuel cell installation ā but the funding tipped it into true viability.
4 x 400kW Doosan PureCell systems to be installed giving 1.6ME electrical (private wire) and 1.9MW thermal, using natural gas from the gas grid.
Electrou 1.6 MW installation
Again, similarly to the DIMES outcomes, the emissions are modelled to be significantly lower than any incumbent technologies

Please watch out for the grand unveiling in 2023!
