Originally called ‘Prussia,’ the community of Leader was founded in the early 1900s by European immigrants. Residents decided to change the name in 1917, and Prussia became ‘LEADER.’

In 1914 the Smith Barn was built to accommodate W.T. Smith’s

livestock of 1,600 mules, 2,000 horses, 2,000 hogs and 10,000 sheep. At 400’ x 128’ x 60’ high, it was the largest barn ever built in

North America. See its replica at the Leader Tourist Booth.

St. John’s School was a Protestant school founded in 1911. This Heritage Site is now a restored one-room school house with period furnishings and the original teacherage, including a miniature replica of the original church with artifacts.

Top off your historical tour with the Blumenfeld Catholic Church, a Provincial Heritage Site boasting one of the most beautiful church interiors in Canada.

210 species and counting! Contrasting ecosystems make the Leader Birding Trail attractive to a large variety of resident birds. Keep a lookout for white-tail deer, antelope and moose. The river is filled with pickerel, northern pike and sturgeon so if you like to fish, you won’t be disappointed. Have your camera

ready for the legendary panoramic view from atop Checkerboard Hill. This height of land puts the whole South Saskatchewan River valley at your feet.

Just a short distance east of Leader are the Great Sandhills, a remarkable 1,900 square kilometre formation of active sand dunes, sand flats and high stable dunes covered with sage brush and prairie grasses. Enjoy the sights of mule deer, pronghorn antelope, the more elusive red fox, kangaroo rat and burrowing owl.Explore a communal way of life based on hard work and

prayer at the Estuary Hutterite Colony. Established in 1958, the colony is almost totally self sufficient. Guests are welcome to a guided tour and if you are lucky you will hit

their farmer’s market for delicious produce and baking.
