Larissa Davis

With 15 years in magazine pub-lishing, I understand working fast, being flexible, and leading change. When printed newsletters gave way to email, I partnered with copywriters to create com-

pelling e-newsletters and grow our subscriber base. When the iPad emerged, I developed four interactive magazines, delving into the capabilities of InDesign’s folio tools. As a manager, I motivate my team to achieve goals and I utilize their strengths to advance the business and improve our products. I value the creative collaboration between editor and art director. My strengths are conceptualizing articles and photo shoots, styling, and bringing a layout to life with typography. My colleagues say my strengths come from being able to visually interpret their desires. I am a compassionate manager and co-worker, and I work well within a team, encouraging growth and participation.

Q: Over the course of your career, what would you point to as the high points A First, my visit to Garbage magazine during my senior year in college. That is when I realized I wanted to be a magazine designer. Second, meeting Pokey Bolton and getting my first magazine design job at Quilting Arts. Third, working with Linda Ligon, founder of Interweave. Most recently, collaborating with Shahla Hebets, a great and inspirational manager.

Q: Looking at your recent work, what stands out to you? A I have loved all the publications I have worked on. Quilting Arts will always be dear as the first magazine I designed. Modern Patchwork is probably my favorite overall; I just love the content and the aesthetic. Other highlights have been the Studios magazine redesign in 2013, and recently the rebrandings of Sew News and Creative Machine Embroidery, and a very early design I still love, is Beryl Taylor’s book Mixed-Media Explorations.

Q: What do you think has made you successful? A I have been blessed with a great combination of talent with words, visual design capability, strong typography skills, and a powerful ability to collaborate. As a colleague of mine puts it, “You are able to take the relatively incoherent requests you get from editors and turn them into exactly the designs they would make if they could make them.”

Q: If you could have any design assignment in the world, what would it be? A I would love to work with some of the designers I have met in the industry to develop and promote their brands. But whatever I do, the key is partnership. The collaboration is what excites me.

Q: Where do you see yourself going from here? A I am looking for a company with a supportive, positive culture, and I admit I do love working with beautiful products! A retailer of clothing or home dec with an appealing aesthetic would be a nice place to land. But a magazine would a dream!

Q&ALarissa Davis

Larissa Davis has been impacting the publishing industry behind the scenes for over a decade. Starting in 2000, her design helped propel the unique art quilting magazine Quilting Arts to prominence and success, catching the eye of investors from Aspire Media. After the company was acquired, Larissa continued to lead the QUILtIng ArtS suite of products (including the innovative MODErn PAtCHWOrK SIP), as well as mixed-media powerhouse CLOtH PAPEr SCISSOrS (StUDIOS, PAgES, ArtIStS & MAKErS) and the sewing magazine StItCH. We caught up with Larissa to hear in her own words about her career, and what she has her sights on next.

I spread my wings and jumped into a larger more corporate environment. I began in their production department. I learned Quark in and out, as well as Filemaker Pro. I was fortunate to work closely with the in-house printer, an invaluable learning experience. After a year I was promoted to Senior Designer and was in charge of all the design work, marketing materials, annual reports, the web site, and special materials for large clients.

portlAnd, mAineGenerated Image was a fun place to work and a great job out of college. This was the era when to get a calibrated color laser print was an exciting new technology, and this little shop in the Old Port in Portland, Maine was a hot spot for designers across Southern Maine. The job was billed as a copy shop worker, but I saw an opportunity for design and made a new position for myself creating logos, identity materials, brochures, posters, and more. I enjoyed working with owners Penny Gruen and Susu Martin, visionary women from whom I learned a great deal.
