Stavros StavrouPresident of Larnaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry

From the EditorWe are delighted to welcome you to Lar-naka, one of the world’s oldest continu-ously inhabited cities! As such, Larnaka is abundant in historic and archaeological places, museums and ancient places of faith. But behind the well-known attractions, Larnaka’s narrow streets are filled with hidden gems. This booklet, which is issued for the twentieth consecutive year, aims to assist you in discov-ering Larnaka “behind the scenes”. Recommendations on new points of interest, events which will entertain you and get you acquainted with the Cypriot culture and of course, valuable tips from the locals.

Every piece of Larnaka offers something special and we want to show it to our esteemed visitors. What I personally love about Larnaka is the fact that it has the atmosphere of a small city and the convenience of a metropolitan area. Larnaka has qualities that distinguish the region from other holiday resorts. You can rarely find a place which combines historic attractions, the commercial centre, cosmopolitan promenades and blue-flag awarded beaches together with numerous activities, all within a short distance. So, Larna-ka’s compact size is what makes the destination special, to-gether with other characteristics which can be revealed by reading this edition.

The Larnaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry wishes you a memorable holiday! Make sure that when you de-part, your suitcase is filled with memories, nice feelings, new tastes, the stories of the locals and most of all, spiritual rejuvenation.

KATO DRYS VILLAGEAlthough Kato Drys is a small mountainous village of around 130 residents, it presents a rich history and interesting architec-ture. Two authentic agricultural museums and a hospitable win-ery can give you an inside into cyprus’ ancient rural life.

Local Agricultural Museum of Kato DrysHoused in a traditional residence, the Local Agricultural Muse-um of Kato Drys was once the home of Gabriel and Eleni Papa-christoforou, and was donated to the Department of Antiqui-ties after their passing with the provision that it would serve as a local museum of olden-day village life. The house is a typical specimen of local architecture from the 19th century and is con-structed from stone. Today, the museum depicts a traditional ru-ral household and is laid out with the furniture and equipment of the times, including tools that were used for occupational purposes and household chores.Tel: +357 24 342 2648Operating Hours: Daily: 09:00-15:00, Closed every second SaturdayEntrance Fee: €1

WORLD’S OLDEST DIVER AT WORLD’S BEST WRECKA 95-year-old broke his own record on September 1st as the world’s oldest scuba diver after taking the plunge to explore the famous Zenobia shipwreck in Larnaka. Ray Woolley, pio-neer diver and World War II veteran, dived for 44 minutes at a depth of 40.6 meters. “We did it...I feel great. It’s lovely to break my record again and I hope if I can keep fit I will break it again next year with all of you,” Woolley said moments after emerging from the water. Woolley and dozens of other divers scoured the watery depths around the shipwreck of the gigan-tic Zenobia, a cargo vessel that sank about 2 km off Larnaka in 1980.

Zenobia, which now lies on its side with its 104 trucks still chained to the vessel, is extremely popular with divers and about 60,000 visit the site each year.

The wreck is now one of Cyprus’ most important protected ar-tificial reefs, with many species of fish making it their home, including grouper, barracuda, kingfish, jacks and trigger fish, as well as moray eels, stingrays, turtles and octopus. Its ferries and much of the cargo are intact, making it fascinating to ex-plore, and some of the one million hen eggs the Zenobia was carrying have even remained intact under water!
