Welcome to the autumn / winter issue of the magazine. As we come to the end of what has been an amazing summer, you won’t be surprised to know that it has been a very busy time as usual at the Rescue Centre with numerous homeless dogs, cats and many kittens as well as rabbits and guinea pigs in need of our help. Our animal care staff work tirelessly looking after all of the animals that come through our gates, and although it is hard work and sometimes emotionally challenging, there is nothing like the joy that we all feel when an animal goes from our care to a second chance at life in a loving new forever home.

This is a very special year for the Charity as it marks the 25th anniversary of our Rescue Centre in Ipplepen. In the spring of 1994, the Charity moved into a former racing Greyhound kennels at Biltor and on 1st September that year, the Rescue Centre was officially opened. To mark this milestone and to celebrate being in our wonderful premises for a quarter of a century, we planned our 25th Anniversary Family Fun Day on 1st September. Unfortunately, due to a small outbreak of Kennel Cough at the centre we had to postpone the event until next year. We are very disappointed to have to do this, but as always the welfare of animals is our main concern. The disease is contained and is confined to a very few dogs who are being treated.

To coincide with the anniversary we have just launched our ‘25 for 25 Anniversary Appeal’, where we are challenging our wonderful supporters to each raise £25 before the end of the year to help care for the animals. The £25 can be raised in many ways,

from a simple cake sale right through to a sponsored skydive. There are more great fundraising ideas on our ‘Thank You’ pages 20-21. We look forward to hearing about your fundraising ideas, so please contact our team and we will be happy to help you in whatever way we can.

This year has seen the completion of work to our rabbit and guinea pig accommodation, with the addition of a specially designated guinea pig room. Our next project is to rebuild our kennels and a formal planning application has been submitted. More details of our Big Bark Appeal can be found on page 8. Thank you to everyone who has supported our new kennel appeal so far, and please do consider helping us if you can and have not done so already.

In this issue of the magazine, you can read some of the success stories of animals we have rehomed recently. These include the incredible success story of the Labrador cross called Larry who, thanks to the hard work and dedication of his new owners, has overcome his difficult start and is living a very happy dog's life!

On behalf of everyone connected with Animals in Distress, we thank you so much for your incredible support of our work. Your continued support makes stories like Larry’s possible and gives a second chance at a happy life to hundreds of homeless animals each year. As I always say, we could not do it without you. Thank you.

Unfortunately it's the animals - and often new owners too - who suffer the consequences of unscrupulous breeders selling pets online.

By adopting rather than shopping online, you get a pet that has already been vet-checked and treated for any ailments, neutered, vaccinated and treated for fleas and worms - all included at a fraction of the price.

Please, if you're thinking of adding a pet to your family, support your local rescue and adopt, don't shop.

Adopt, don't shopThere's a reason we're always saying "Adopt, don't shop." Kittens Petal and Pebbles were brought to us after a lady had purchased them online - the advert had said they were child-friendly, healthy family pets.

However, the kittens were not used to people at all, attacking anyone who came near them out of terror. They were brought to us as they weren't safe to be in the home with the lady's young child.

The kittens had diarrhoea, eye infections, fleas and worms. The original seller had not even known whether they were male or female.

Petal and Pebbles needed veterinary treatment and several weeks of socialisation and TLC from our team before being ready to go to a new home.

Will Writing Week In honour of Pet Month in April we teamed up with local solicitors Fursdon Knapper, Veitch Penny LLP and Gavin Ball from APS Legal Associates for Will Writing Week again this year. The solicitors' specialist teams kindly offered to give up their time and expertise to help people write or update a Will, in return for a donation to Animals in Distress.

We'd like to say a massive thank you to all the solicitors and everyone who took part in our Will Writing Week to help the animals in our care. Thank you so much on behalf of the animals! Our next Will Writing Week will take place in April 2020.

Cats dumped in boxIn July two cats were dumped outside our Outlet shop and were found by Shop Manager Sue.

Sue said “They were squashed together in a tiny box and could barely move. One of them had messed himself out of fear, and I could see through the box that both were in an appalling condition with bleeding scabs on their skin.”

The cats were cared for at our rescue centre and we named them Apollo and Aurora.

Aurora was heavily pregnant when dumped and due to the stress of her ordeal she didn't give birth for a further three weeks. Following a difficult labour lasting 24 hours - with our vets having to attend in the middle of the night - Aurora finally gave birth to four healthy kittens. Mum and all the kittens are doing very well at the rescue centre.

Apollo went to a lovely new home in August. 54

For the love of LarryEvery once in a while a really special animal will come into our care who needs equally special new owners to be able to offer them the happy life they deserve.

When Larry arrived at the rescue centre in February 2018 he was considered a “dangerous dog”, barking and lunging at everyone and everything he encountered. However it quickly became apparent to our expert team that Larry was just extremely undersocialised – the most undersocialised dog we have ever had at the rescue centre. We can only imagine what his past may have been like, but he had no experience of life and didn’t know how to react to anything.

Our kennel team and volunteers worked very hard to help Larry and he soon showed himself to be a very sweet dog – but unfortunately, as he was so stressed around new people and things, he continued to display his reactive behaviour to any potential rehomers who visited.

Claire our kennel manager said “There was a time we wondered if, despite all our best efforts to help Larry, we would ever be able to find him a new home - as who would come forward with the experience, time and patience to help him? However, after Larry had been in rescue for almost a year, along came Karen and Ian. They are an amazing couple and we're all so impressed by the hard work they've done with Larry. They have changed his life forever!”

Cover story

“We have continued our training sessions with Carl twice a week, and Carl has taught us how to use positive reinforcement methods to help Larry gradually become desensitised to many of the things he found so difficult before.

“For example every afternoon Ian has been walking him around our local shopping centre and car park. As it’s a big area and fairly quiet in the afternoons he can keep Larry at a distance from things which trigger him and keep him below his excitement threshold, gradually bringing him closer but being able to move away if it seems he is going to react – and using lots of treats to reinforce his calm behaviour.

“Thanks to all our hard work Larry is now completely fine with people – even new people – and cars, including going in the car. All these things have now become normal to him, so he doesn’t need to react. He has been to the pub with us and sat quietly at our feet, has met other dogs off the lead and coped extremely well. Recently Larry went on a trip to Pets at Home and walked around the store with Ian - on a very busy Saturday - and he took it all in his stride! What a difference six months can make! There's never a dull moment in our house now but so glad we gave him a home and a happy life! ”

Karen explains: “There was something about Larry when I first saw his photo - I knew he was the dog for us. The rescue centre staff explained about Larry’s difficulties and we asked professional dog trainer Carl Donald - www.thedogfatherdevon.co.uk - to come and meet Larry with us and give his professional opinion. We came to visit Larry three times every week for several months with Carl to build up a connection with Larry before taking him home and to begin the long process of helping him to feel safe and calm dealing with everyday life.

Ian says “Although Larry is fine with other dogs off the lead, he can still be reactive when on the lead. We have recently started going to a great new group training with Carl called ‘Adult Calm & Connection’, where reactive dogs get to encounter other dogs in a safe and supported environment. Everyone there is so supportive as they all want you to succeed! It’s such a great class – everyone has had such good results from it and we are beginning to see big improvements already.

“When I first met Larry I wanted to help him but thought ‘I can’t do this’ – I didn’t know how to help. Working with Carl lots of things have fallen into place and it’s so lovely to see Larry finally enjoying a normal doggie life. Truly a happy ending and, despite what he’s been through, Larry is such a lovely dog with so much love to give!”

I was brought into Animals in Distress when I was just two weeks old because I was very poorly and I’d been rejected by my mum and siblings. I’ve been lovingly looked after by the kennel staff, and although I’m partially blind I’m full of beans and I’m getting bigger and stronger every day!

I’m hoping to help the team here to raise over £1million (that’s a LOT of dog biscuits) so we can build lovely new kennels for waifs and strays like me.

I’ve had a sniff around the kennels here, and they are old and noisy and are very scary to a little dog like me.

With a new-build my friends would have airy, dry kennels which are warm in the winter and cool in the summer. They will also be much easier and quicker to clean, which means that the humans here can spend more time training us dogs. We love to use our brains and keep busy, but training also helps us get picked for new homes and to settle into them quickly.

I’ve decided I’m going to help the team build something much nicer, by being their mascot and visiting companies and schools who may be able to help us – so get in touch if you’d like to meet me and a member of our team!

You can help too - by buying a brick, choosing us as your Charity of the Year or telling every animal-lover you know about our plans and asking them to support us.

Follow me on Instagram: LittleMoRescuePup to keep up with my adventures!

Please help us make our dream of new kennels a realityWe held our first Corporate Scavenger Hunt on a rainy day in August. Businesses from across the area were given a list of 20 things to find and dashed off to collect as many items as they could! Between them teams from Frankman Design, Riviera Insurance, Stephens Scown Solicitors and the winning team, the G12 Networking Group, raised over £1000! The day was rounded off with a lovely networking event which, as well as raising more funds, was a really enjoyable way of showing local companies what we do and how they can support us.

The event was so much fun and so successful that we are holding another event on Wednesday 11th December, with a Scavenger Hunt during the day and a Mince Pie and Mulled Wine afternoon networking event. Please get in touch if you’d like to take part in this fun team-building day!

“We've had lots of laughs and lots of tears. I wouldn't have missed it for the world.”

“Back when we had no centre, the Charity was run from Muriel Sellick’s garage in Ellacombe, from where we sold donated bric-a-brac to raise the much needed funds. Dog boarding fees were very expensive, but then in 1994, thanks to some generous legacies we were lucky enough to be able to buy the former Greyhound racing kennels at Biltor.

“I moved into the bungalow at Biltor in March 1994 as the Centre Manager and Keith Parker – who had previously worked there at the Greyhound kennels – became my deputy. We were the only members of staff, but Keith was my rock – he always turned up to work, even in the thickest snow. If a dog was having puppies he would stay in the kennels all night to make sure that everything was ok.

Celebrating 25 years

Our new rescue centre was officially opened on 1st September 1994 by John Inman. Left to right: Christine Paradine, John Inman, John Glaser (Chairman) and Denis Reid (Trustee)

“We built our first cattery and then I looked after all the cats, and Keith all the dogs, with the help of some wonderful volunteers. We started taking in rabbits, chickens and ducks, and we built a duck pond. Soon we had even more residents – sheep (the first was Skippy, who was brought in by a farmer’s wife who’d bottle-fed him and couldn’t bear to take him to market) then goats Harry and Alfie, Vietnamese Pot-bellied pigs, and ponies. Lisa Saunders (now our Cattery Manager) looked after all the farmyard animals. The farm animals all lived their lives out with us.

“I’ll never forget one day when a lorry arrived, full of what looked like rescued oven-ready chickens with no feathers. We found homes for some of the chickens and the rest stayed with us. They grew back all their feathers, and we were never short of eggs!

“I remember one morning we went out and they had all gone - they’d flown up into the trees! They soon came down again when it was feeding time.

It’s hard to believe it but this year marks the 25th anniversary of our wonderful rescue centre in Ipplepen. On 1st September 1994 the centre was officially opened by John Inman and over the years since then we have taken in many thousands of homeless animals that have come to us, desperately in need of our help.

Animals in Distress was founded in 1981 by three ladies Mrs Eileen Hunt, Mrs Georgina Lang and Mrs Muriel Sellick. In the early days of the Charity we would privately board homeless dogs in local kennels until we could find loving new homes for them. Later another lady Margaret Holder built an enclosure in her own garden from where we started to rehome cats.

Christine Paradine joined Animals in Distress in 1990 and remembers the early days of the Charity and the rescue centre.

“There were so many animals on site that we were really busy all the time. We also ran a 24-hour emergency service – which was just me on the end of the phone! I remember going out in the middle of the night to rescue kittens.

“We also had many centre cats who would roam around the site.

“Over time we improved all the buildings. We built a maternity cattery, stables for the farm animals, an improved rabbit building and a rodent room.

“It was very hard work but it was good – I wouldn’t have missed it for the world. We were like a family, the staff and volunteers. We were very close and we had lots of laughs, and lots of tears.”

Christine retired in 2010 but still works for the Charity as a volunteer, giving talks in the local community about the vital work of Animals in Distress.

Over the years we have made big improvements to our cattery and rabbit and guinea pig accommodation, including sensory gardens where the animals can spend time in the sunshine. We have a veterinary suite and special care unit on site so our animals don’t have to travel for vital treatment. We always strive for the highest possible welfare standards and our next project is to rebuild our kennels (see page 8).

We are so grateful for the wonderful facilities we have today and all the incredible hard work of everyone involved in the early days of the charity. Thanks to them, and all the support of our wonderful local community, we are now able to rescue and rehome over 600 dogs, cats, rabbits and guinea pigs each year.

Will you take part in our 25th anniversary appeal? We are challenging as many people as possible to raise £25 before the end of the year, as part of our 25 year celebrations. Please get in touch to tell us about your

fun fundraising ideas! The money you raise will feed a dog or cat for a month.

"Billy is a little more outgoing than Nutmeg, and likes to take himself off over the garden fence for adventures around the farm, often for a few hours at a time. Nutmeg likes to stay closer to home and has a sunny sleeping spot in the window that he loves. They both love to laze around the garden especially in the warmer weather when they can often be found in their favourite spots in the flowerbeds.

" They love to get on the bed for a fuss and are keen to get the best spot nearest to you! Billy has got the loudest purr and he's always a few minutes ahead of the alarm in the morning when he comes to let you know it is breakfast time (much nicer than the sound of the alarm!).

"They are both such friendly boys and we just love having them around."

- Sally

Billy & Nutmeg Happy Endings Happy Endings

Missy"Missy made herself at home right from the very first day. She loves the garden especially when the sun is out and can often be heard talking to the flies! She's starting to explore but not too far. She is more relaxed and likes a bit of fuss and cuddles. We've now worked out she likes nothing more than a pigeon feather to play with. She is very much part of the family and loved by us all enjoying a warm lap and a chin tickle. She's given far more to us as a family than we could ever had imagined and is a delight." - Marie

Mitchell & Robert

Brothers Robert and Mitchell were born at the rescue centre and both went to loving new homes separately in 2013. However, as destiny would have it, both dogs were returned after a few months as each of their new owners found their Collie energy too much.

Mitchell was then fostered by Debbie our Kennel Manager. Debbie explains:

" I fell in love with the pup and decided to adopt him. When Simon came along looking for a new agility dog and offered a forever home to Robert, I suggested while filling out the adoption papers that it might be a nice idea if the pair of us could do some dog walking together with the two brothers and Simon’s other Border Collie Reuben.

"To cut a long story short, we became great friends and fell in love. We got married last year, and now we all live happily ever after with all three dogs!"

Sometimes adopting a rescue pet can change your life in wonderful ways you could never have forseen...

Valerie, Pauline & ZenaValerie, Pauline and Zena are half-wild rabbits who came to the rescue centre as babies after their mother (a Silver Fox) had mated with a wild rabbit. Due to their wild nature - and their colouring - they were overlooked by potential rehomers and were with us at the rescue centre for two years before finding their forever home.

We were over the moon when along came Eve and Harry to offer them the loving forever home they have always dreamed of, where they will be safe but with plenty of space to run around.

Eve explains:

"The girls have settled in so well. They have bonded so much that they all groom each other every day. They really are the best of friends!

They all take in turns napping together, and they cuddle up together often.

Zena is very excitable. She sprints around the garden so fast and does really high jumps where she spins in mid air.

All three sprint around the garden daily, they have a lot of fun. They love the garden because there is so much space for them.

Valerie is the most tame, and she often likes to be stroked."

We're all so happy for the girls: after such a long wait, they finally have the lovely life they deserve.

Bobo"Bobo is a happy dog and is a very good boy at making foster dogs feel welcome in his home. Bobo is a very sensitive boy and is nervous out on walks unless there are wide open spaces where he can see other dogs approaching. He absolutely loves Dartmoor, which we visit as often as we can, and running along the beach. He is the sweetest little dog - a complex little character but full of fun and loves to play with toys and play chase. We absolutely love him to bits." - Fiona

"Scrappy has settled in really well, she's lost some of her excess weight and absolutely adores chasing her ball at the beach or in the fields around where we live.

She can open doors and steal the toys from the display stand at work, which has been caught on the CCTV!!

She even has her own instagram page so she can show all her adventures!! You can follow her @scrappythebordercollie.
