• 1990 Regis University Master’s Project, MBTI and Enneagram Instruments

• 1998 First Codes, Theme (12 Tribes) and Enneagram

• 2001 Book, MBTI-Enneagram Model

• 2003 Workbook, Theme and Enneagram Codes for 208 type tables

• 2009 www.elcie.com, Theme/Enneagram and five common groupings of MBTI types coded for 250 occupational type tables

• 2013 Code 404 new CPP type tables and continue work with Themes (12 Tribes)!

My Manual (Seventh printing 1990) shows Product-moment correlations

with MBTI continuous scores.

1. Kuder Occupational Interest Survey-In only one instance (1 of 101) is all

four MBTI letters correlated with an occupation (Certified Public

Accountant).

2. Strong-Campbell finds no (0 of 86) instance of a correlation with all four

MBTI letters and only two instances of a correlation with three MBTI

letters.

3. This result has been a mystery for some time in the MBTI community.

4. It leads to the assumption that the MBTI letters are weakly correlated

with occupations and statements like, “MBTI types are descriptive not

proscriptive.”

Page 4: Larry Gabbard INTP M.A., M.S., Owner eLCie, Career ... · •2009 , Theme/Enneagram and five common groupings of ... 3. This result has been a mystery for some time in the MBTI community

and we can solve this mystery. Based on coding the 250 MBTI Type Tables for Occupations (TTO, Schaubhut 2008): 1. These occupations only show an average of 2.7 Preferences per occupation. a) About 9% of the occupations actually show all four Type letters, b) 38% show three Type letters, c) 41% show two Type letters and d) 12% show one Type letter. 2. Sorting occupations by all four MBTI letters is overkill (91% of the time)! This mystery is solved! On average, you can be 94% confident that an occupation is on the correct Preference list!

So, what am I doing?

I am producing occupational codes (Type

Occupational Theme, TOT, Codes) for common

groups of types from large numbers of occupational

type tables.

1. I am a career counselor and I like the idea of Top 50

lists (MBTI Career Report Manual, CRM, Hammer

1992)

2. MBTI Career Report User’s Guide (Hammer 2005)

3. I was always attracted to Holland Occupational

Code (HOC) lists

4. I have quietly been using TOT coded lists with

clients since 1998!.

The Standard Occupational Classification (SOC) Code is intended to cover “all occupations in which work is performed for pay or profit, including work performed in family-operated enterprises where the direct remuneration may not be made to family members” (Office of Federal Statistical Policy and Standards, 1980).

This Code serves as a link between MBTI Type Tables for Occupations and O*NET OnLine™

which also links to Career Cluster Pathways (CCPs), later.

2. TOT CODES

How are Rankings used to code occupations or type tables?

The simplest form of TOT coding yields Type Codes where the rankings are

used as scores.

How do scores become codes?

Page 21: Larry Gabbard INTP M.A., M.S., Owner eLCie, Career ... · •2009 , Theme/Enneagram and five common groupings of ... 3. This result has been a mystery for some time in the MBTI community

Using these rules, what is the Type Code?

My Coding Rules:

1. The first code letter is capitalized and is the

code for the lowest score. The highest type

percentages become the lowest rankings!

2. Other codes are shown in order of

increasing ranking.

3. A scoring range is established by

subtracting the highest and lowest ranking.

4. Any code in the lower 10% of the scoring

range is also shown as a capital letter.

5. Letters in the lower 40% of the scoring

range are shown as small (lower case) letters.

6. Code letters equal to or greater than 40% of

the scoring range are not shown in the code.

Don’t feel bad for these codes as high

rankings actually start to tell us who the

occupation is not like!

TYPE CODE

The Accountant example from the CRM (208 occupations):

Page 23: Larry Gabbard INTP M.A., M.S., Owner eLCie, Career ... · •2009 , Theme/Enneagram and five common groupings of ... 3. This result has been a mystery for some time in the MBTI community

What does this type code (Abdpnf) mean?

Accountants first look like Type A (ISTJ), second like Type B (ISTP), third like

Type D (ESTJ), fourth like Type P (ENTJ), fifth like Type N (INTP) and finally,

sixth, like Type F (ISFP)!

Page 24: Larry Gabbard INTP M.A., M.S., Owner eLCie, Career ... · •2009 , Theme/Enneagram and five common groupings of ... 3. This result has been a mystery for some time in the MBTI community

eLCie interprets this code (Abdpnf) as a hierarchy:

1. These Accountants will very strongly resemble ISTJ (Type A)

2. Normally, ISTJs will provide professional leadership for this occupation

3. If there were other Capital letters, they would be considered part of the leadership

team of this occupation and Very Strongly (vs) related to ISTJ (Type A)

4. The Small letters may do much of the work of an Accountant.

5. The Last small letter (f, Type F or ISFP) is a Threshold participant in the occupation

Page 25: Larry Gabbard INTP M.A., M.S., Owner eLCie, Career ... · •2009 , Theme/Enneagram and five common groupings of ... 3. This result has been a mystery for some time in the MBTI community

The 2008 occupational information (250 type tables) from Consulting Psychologists Press is

found in MBTI Type Tables for Occupations (TTO, Schaubhut 2008). Type coding yields:

1. These lists are about the same length (1Count), except for K(ENFP).

2. Despite #1, above, the total code letters (C plus S) are very nearly the same (97 to 106)!

3. On average, we can be 93% confident that an occupation is on the right list.

3. CODE COUNTING

Has anyone used code counts to approximate the HOC of a group of occupations?

Did you simply count all of the code letters or did you use a weighted count?

Starting Assumption: All occupational codes are created equal!

I do a variety of code counts to approximate the working personality of a group of coded

occupations:

Page 27: Larry Gabbard INTP M.A., M.S., Owner eLCie, Career ... · •2009 , Theme/Enneagram and five common groupings of ... 3. This result has been a mystery for some time in the MBTI community

1. Above, I mentioned First Letter Counts (1Counts), Professional

Leadership

2. Capital Letter Counts (CCounts), Leader and Leadership Team

3. To model the personality of a group of occupations, I use ACounts

and weight the first letter by 3, other capital letters by 2 and small

letters (lower case) by 1 (better weighting 10,9,4)

4. Small Letter Counts (SCounts), Workers

5. Last Letter Counts (LCounts), Threshold Workers

6. I find: Counts ≥ 0.9 Max show Very Strong relationships (vs), ≥ 0.7

Max are Strong (s), ≥ 0.5 Max are Average (a) and ≥ 0.25 Max are Weak

(w)

CHECKING THE SECOND ASSUMPTION

Since I know the codes for all SEVEN DIMENSIONS:

I can approximate the working personality of the 20 ISTJ (Type A) occupations by

ACounts (expectations shown in bold):

1. Type ACount: ISTJ(vs), ISTP(w), ESTJ(w) and ESTP(w). 99% Confidence

2. Jungian* (Function Attitude) ACount: Te(vs), Ti(vs), Si(vs) and Se(w). 89% Conf.

3. Preference ACount: T(vs) and S(a), -ST-. 98% Confidence

4. Column ACount: ST(vs) and NT(w). 92% Confidence

Return to Preference Codes

Page 30: Larry Gabbard INTP M.A., M.S., Owner eLCie, Career ... · •2009 , Theme/Enneagram and five common groupings of ... 3. This result has been a mystery for some time in the MBTI community

From Preference Codes, we find:

1. Preferences are very independent. Weak relationships seen only in

one case (P).

2. The Preference code counts of Type lists always attempt to give back

the four MBTI letters, order may be different.

3. 81% of Preference codes start with a functional letter. The workplace

does not favor Judgment or Perception preferences!

Page 34: Larry Gabbard INTP M.A., M.S., Owner eLCie, Career ... · •2009 , Theme/Enneagram and five common groupings of ... 3. This result has been a mystery for some time in the MBTI community

From Type Code Groupings, we find:

1. The Type Code matches the traditional dominant Jungian 1Count in 52% of occupations. A

random result would be 12.5% of occupations. Remember this is for an occupation not an

individual. The Type Code functionality (both attitudes of the middle two type letters) matches

the Jungian 1Count in 93.6% of occupations. A random result would be 50% of occupations.

2. The Type Code matches the Preference 1Count in 98.4% of occupations. A random result would

be about 50% of occupations

3. The Type 1Count matches the Column 1Count in 80% of occupations. A person comes to work

in a column that matches their middle two (functional) MBTI letters in about 80% of

occupations. A random result would be 25% of occupations

[Not only do these TOT Codes standalone but they complement each other well, if

unexpectedly in some cases.]

From Jungian (Function Attitudes) Codes, we find:

1. Jungian types are very independent. Only two weak relationships are seen

2. The highest Jungian ACount represents the dominant function 14 times and

one count represents a virtual tie between dominant and auxiliary functions

3. The second highest count represents the auxiliary function However, the

auxiliary is likely to be Extraverted rather than Introverted and vice versa

4. Tertiary and inferior functions are not likely to appear among the first four

code counts. Rarely impact approximate working personality descriptions

5. The traditional inferior function is likely to be the eighth count (or priority)

From Temperament/Column Codes we find:

Temperament and Column Codes show, on average, almost 90% confidence.

But, the Type Code should agree with Temperament/Column Code. The worst

agreement is 57% for Temperament (SP) and 75% for Column (NF).

Page 37: Larry Gabbard INTP M.A., M.S., Owner eLCie, Career ... · •2009 , Theme/Enneagram and five common groupings of ... 3. This result has been a mystery for some time in the MBTI community

From Tribe/Enneagram Codes, we find:

1. Theme/Tribe Codes represent 12 Pairs of MBTI types to model the 12

Tribes or Apostles.

2. Similar to Theme/Tribe, MBTI Pairs are used to model the nine

Enneagram personalities.
