“A Renaissance City Plan was conceptualised to enable Singapore to become a global arts city with strong inter-cultural bonds and a distinct national identity. Today, a decade later, there have indeed been dramatic changes in our skyline and there is a vast array of arts and cultural activities. This year, London-based magazine, Monocle, ranks Singapore as 15th most liveable city in the world. Singapore is now perceived as exciting, creative, and buzzing with opportunities for living it up and creative work.” Heng Swee Keat, Minister for Education, at the Art Elective Programme Exhibition Opening Ceremony 2011, 4 August 2011

The LASALLE name is associated with progress, quality, and uncompromising standards in creative arts education. Programmes & Awards LASALLE offers a comprehensive range of programmes specialising in the disciplines of Arts Management, Design, Fine Arts, Film, Media Arts, Dance, Music, and Theatre. Students can look forward to graduating with the award of a Diploma, a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) or a Master of Arts in their respective specialisations.

Contemporary Focus With an emphasis on contemporary practice and research, our teaching philosophy emphasises idea generation and new interpretations of creative disciplines. Our students’ ideas and creativity set them apart as they emerge as reflective practitioners in the industry.

Research by Practice: A 21st Century ApproachAll research starts with ideas. More than two decades after its humble beginnings, LASALLE can look back on a long tradition of practice-led research in art and design. The impressive list of successful LASALLE alumni, who were prominently involved in shaping Singapore’s arts scene, attest to the institution’s strength in providing an appropriate academic environment for the creation of novel ideas and new knowledge.

LASALLE values the professional practice of all full-time and part-time staff as one of its most important assets. Our unique college environment is formed by a faculty of Singaporean and international artists and educators, originating from more than 20 countries worldwide. Many are renowned experts in their areas and actively involved in exhibitions, conferences, and performances. The incorporation of their respective expertise in course delivery closely relates teaching and learning to a broad range of theoretical and intellectual concerns in contemporary art and design practice.

Hence, students are constantly exposed to first-hand experience in current research practices, leading to the acquiring of a wide set of knowledge and skills by the time they graduate. These skills enable them to successfully adjust to the multi-faceted demands of the creative industries.

As a Singaporean institution for tertiary arts education, positioned at the crossroads of diverse cultures within a multiethnic society, LASALLE aims to add a distinctive Singaporean viewpoint to the ongoing debate on repositioning artistic practice in a post-industrialised society.

In the context of the fast growing economic, political and cultural importance of Asia, there is a need to redefine formerly familiar notions of “East and West”, “Tradition and Contemporary”, in relation to artistic practice in the 21st Century. Singapore in particular, with ambitious plans for its future in a post-industrialised world, is in a prime position to take a lead role in this long overdue paradigm shift.

The main focus of LASALLE’s Research Committee is to meet the complex demands for practice-led research in the context of tertiary arts education, and to identify areas of research in arts-related content, technology, and infrastructure, in which LASALLE should engage. The institutional framework for the facilitation of research encompasses various approaches, such as

•providingcontinuoussupportforfacultyintheirprofessional practice, ranging from professional leave for the realisation of particular projects to financial assistance of PhD studies,

•allocatingoffundsforart-relatedresearchdeemedto strengthen LASALLE’s reputation and recognition as an arts institution of international standing, and

•establishingstronglinksbetweentertiaryeducationand research practice by encouraging research proposals arising from postgraduate studies.

The essential capacity to collate, communicate, and disseminate knowledge and expertise to students, as well as to the wider community in Singapore, will increasingly be valued in LASALLE’s research scheme.

Capitalising on best practices in generating manifold novel ideas, and on the unique opportunities that an integrated arts campus can offer, LASALLE aims to assume a significant role in Singapore for practice-led research in visual and performing arts, as well as in arts education in a global culture.

Specialist Mentors Students are mentored by international faculty who span a breadth of creative professions from designers and painters to actors, composers, dancers, directors, interactive artists, curators, and many more. Collectively, they represent an international career portfolio with organisations including ZKM Centre for Art and Media, CILECT (International Association of Film and Television Schools), The Esplanade Co Ltd, Glasgow School of Art, National Arts Council of Singapore, ESMOD, National Institute of Dramatic Art, New York University, and Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts.

Arts celebrities who have stepped through our doors, inspiring and mentored students and guests alike, include American pop artist Frank Stella, British sculptor Antony Gormley, Oscar® awardwinning producer Lord David Puttnam, Irek Mukhamedov of the Bolshoi Ballet, new media guru Lev Manovich, fashion authorities Colin McDowell, ck Calvin Klein’s Kevin Carrigan and Matthew Williamson, revolutionary Dutch designer Marcel Wanders, production designer Grant Major (Lord of the Rings), and animator-producer David Sproxton (Wallace & Gromit, Chicken Run).

Partner Institution LASALLE is a partner institution of Goldsmiths’ College, University of London, renowned for its creative and innovative approach to teaching and research in the arts. Goldsmiths has approved LASALLE as an appropriate tertiary institution in Singapore to offer degree programmes leading to Goldsmiths’ validated awards.

All degree programmes offered at LASALLE have been designed and developed by LASALLE to fufill the needs of the creative industries in Singapore and Asia-Pacific. These programmes are validated through a process of external peer review by Goldsmiths’ College, University of London, as being of an appropriate standard and quality to lead to a Goldsmiths’ award.

Government Support As part of the government’s plans to upgrade the arts education in Singapore, LASALLE is a recipient of financial support from Ministry of Education (MOE) for both Diploma and Bachelor of Arts (Hons) programmes. Eligible students are entitled to subsidised fees through the MOE Tuition Grant Scheme.

INTEGRATED ARTS CAMPUS

Situated in the Arts, Culture, Learning, and Entertainment hub of Singapore, the city campus encourages interaction through its glass façade and gateless walls. The design provides many platforms for interaction and inspiration. In keeping with the integrative nature of contemporary art and design practice, multiple break-out spaces, and sky bridges encourage diverse art forms to coalesce and co-mingle, providing an inspiring learning environment for students.

Architecturally unique and designed as an integrated arts campus, the LASALLE compound offers students an impressive array of performance and exhibition spaces for learning and showcasing.

LASALLE’s unique learning environment encourages interdisciplinary interaction and a holistic approach to contemporary practice. On any given day, you are exposed to the various creative disciplines – you could be viewing an exhibition by an international artist, then attending a lecture by a guest designer, followed by a concert at lunchtime, critiquing a fellow student’s work-in-progress, and finally, helping your friends with their film project.

THE WIN-WIN FACTOR

Where Student Life and Industry Experience Become One Beyond just learning how to be the best arts and creative industry practitioners in your time at LASALLE, the practical and practice-based pedagogy also promotes industry collaborations and participation in competitions on a regional level, thus inculcating a sense of real-life experience that will hold you in good stead once you step into the environment of contributing to the economy at large.

In 2011, LASALLE’s winning streak at major competitions, such as The Crowbar Awards organised by the Association of Accredited Advertising Agents of Singapore, and the Singapore International Film Festival’s Silver Screen Awards, was testament to the College’s world-class standards in arts education, as well as the incandescent talent of its student body.

LASALLE’s Faculty of Design produces programmes that are geared towards being intimately relevant to the advertising, design, and fashion industries of today’s world, which explains why the students are strongly encouraged to have their works represented and competing at a diverse range of events, including

Spikes Young IntegratedCompetition;

•YoungGuns(Regional/AsiaPacific);

•D&ADStudentAwards;

•D&ADWhitePencilAward;

•IDNDesignAwards;

•DesignForAsiaAwards;

Meanwhile, Performing Arts students get a chance to be involved in thought-provoking and text-heavy theatre pieces that are cerebral and challenging to both the actors and its audiences, while also literally kicking up a storm on stage with recitals and concerts, danceshowcases,andmusicaltheatreextravaganzas;garnering rave reviews for being virtuosic in their chosen artforms of acting, dance, and music, or for their versatility as triple-threat performers.

Behind the scenes, Technical and Production Management students ensure the show goes on as scheduled, regardless of how many pitfalls peppertheprocessalongtheway;andthosespecialising in Theatre+Performance learn the finer points of becoming the future leaders of the creative industry, amassing skills in the areas of directing, playwriting, and dramaturgy.

If the film and broadcast media are what set your heart pumping, then the Media Arts Faculty regime will position your fingers squarely on the pulse of that industry – equipping you with the knowledge and know-how to handle both short films and feature length productions from the opening credits to the wrap party, as well as helping you to develop networks by participating in competitions like the Silver Screen Awards at the Singapore International Film Festival.

You can also choose to specialise in Animation, where your childhood fantasies of anime creatures come to life, and youthful obsession with comics can be honed to earn you a livelihood with the likes of top-lining companies like Double Negative, Lucasfilm, and Sparky Animation.

Pay It Forward In 2012, students from the Arts Management Programme conceptualised, organised, directed, and produced i-AM 2012 Arts Festival, an annual arts festival for social causes.

Over a period of 10 days, 3 visual art exhibitions, 3 art performances, and 6 outreach programmes were featured and each of these reached out to society in unique ways - supporting and educating the public about issues that range from debilitating diseases such as Alzheimer’s to the importance of encouragement and opportunities that our youths-at-risk currently seek.

Uniquely and Irrepressibly LASALLE FromOpenHousetoOrientationWeek;fromyour first log-in to the LASALLE Student Portal to The LASALLE Show, our graduation showcase — life at LASALLE is an experience you will remember as the best years of your life.

The Urban Redevelopment Authority’s Marina Bay Public Art Programme will feature 10 outstanding art benches specially designed by LASALLE’s Interior Design students from August 2012. Through this industry partnership, visitors to the Marina Bay City Gallery will see thematic pop art by LASALLE’s young creatives on its glass façade, and the Marina Bay Promenade will also be dotted with seasonal posters developed by LASALLE’s Design Communication talents.

The eighth art, film, resembles so many other arts. However, it is in itself a unique medium. Film prizes the collaborative process, and The Puttnam School of Film sits in a privileged position of being able to tap into the ecosystem of the various arms of an arts college. Whilst doing so, the primary focus of the school is to nurture its students to find their own voice through the art of cinematic storytelling.

This programme answers the call of the local and international film community, which seeks reflective practitioners empowered by the capacity for creativity and authenticity. Through practice-based learning, instilled with critical thinking, you will be inspired to communicate within a cinematic framework and explore various narrative environments, such as short and feature films, documentaries, mini series, and television commercials, with an emphasis on professional and broadcast standards.

While keeping with the current advances in technology, the school also observes that these are mere tools in the overall architecture of content. Although new technologies always have and will continue to have an impact on the realisation of artistic works, the programme will emphasise skills and knowledge that refer to the artistic and conceptual traditions in film, especially in the area of storytelling, in all the film

related disciplines, from screenwriting, directing, and producing to cinematography, sound, and editing.

Level 1 establishes the groundwork of filmmaking and presents the theoretical approaches needed for the study of film. You will be introduced to the disciplines of screenwriting, producing, directing, cinematography, sound recording, sound-designing, and editing. Level 2 develops the practical and academic work begun in the previous level and takes the collaborative process of film practice further, through various exercises and a short film project. Central to Level 3 are the complex demands of professional filmmaking. Work undertaken in the final year combines your developed artistic approach and technical skills, culminating in a Thesis Film where you specialise in a discipline.

Career Paths: Screenwriter, Producer, Fiction or Documentary Director, Cinematographer, Editor, Sound Designer, Production Designer

Teaching Methods: You will have opportunities to work in studios and attend special workshops and masterclasses. You will attend lectures, tutorials, seminars, and screenings. You will participate in class presentations and complete written assignments. You will be assessed at the end of every semester on your studio practice.

This programme has been developed in response to the demands of a growing creative music industry in Singapore and Southeast Asia for graduates with an enhanced ability, knowledge, and diversity of experience in the areas of performance, composition, and new music technologies.

In keeping with the latest industry demands on contemporary musicians, graduates from the School of Contemporary Music (SoCM) embrace technology as an integral part of their performance and compositional practice. You will be exposed to traditional techniques that are expanded upon by contemporary ideas, enabling you to engage productively with the creative industries in the new millennium. SoCM presents a unique opportunity to experience a broad cross-section of today’s musical practice within one integrated programme. The School fosters important creative relationships between living composers and classical performers, developing highly skilled and creative performer-composers in Jazz and Popular music, and simultaneously integrating Music Technology in innovative and practical ways throughout the programme.

THEATRE+PERFORMANCEDuration: 3 Years Award: BA(Hons) Theatre and Performance

This programme is one of very few undergraduate programmes that offer a comprehensive grounding in all the elements essential to the development of creative leaders in the theatre and entertainment industry. It is catered for those who do not want to be on stage, backstage, or work in theatre administration.

There are five career roles offered as programme specialisms: Director, Playwright, Dramaturge, Theatre Critic, and Drama Facilitator. These all require the same wide understanding of history, culture, performance, dramatic structure, and more. For most of the programme, you are required to learn the procedures and terminology used in all five possible career paths. Mastering any one of these roles is not expected, but this exposure allows you to find your strengths, address your weaknesses, and develop your special interests.

At every stage, you are encouraged to direct, interact, and collaborate with fellow programme members and with students from other Performing Arts programmes, as LASALLE believes in collaboration and the importance of all contributing voices in the theatre-making process.

You will be assigned to key roles on faculty productions, and will collaborate with fellow students and staff on a performance event. You will also have internships and industrial attachments as an assistant to professionals. In the final year, you can select a particular career path and grow specialist skills through personalised guidance from dedicated theatre professionals. Upon graduation, you will possess a substantial portfolio of realised work and paper projects, be employable in the performing arts industry and adequately equipped with the ability to initiate your own productions.

Level 1 introduces a range of key performance techniques and genres, covering a broad spectrum of theatre and performance. At Level 2, the range and scope of practice increases along with depth of selected practices. You will go through workshop and practical lessons in traditional art forms alongside techniques of contemporary performance, plus industrial attachments to a local theatre company, or a residential artist/group in the college. At Level 3, you learn about the practical, theoretical, and intellectual basis for intercultural practices and independent work. You are also responsible for the submission of a thesis assignment that critically traces and assesses the final year specialist project.

ARTS MANAGEMENTDuration: 3 Years Award: BA(Hons) Arts Management

Arts Management is an emerging profession that will increasingly shape the practice and consumption of the arts. Singapore, with its burgeoning government-led arts infrastructure, is the ideal setting for the education and training of the future arts manager or administrator. LASALLE Arts Management graduates, informed by current practice, economics theory, and cultural understanding, will become leaders in their field both in the region and beyond.

The Arts Management programme is both rigorous and innovative, with a distinctive focus on practice, research, business, and cultural history. You will receive comprehensive exposure to art, dance, music, and theatre, thus gaining the skills to excel as an arts manager. Ultimately, you will be able to utilise social responsibility and entrepreneurial strategies in managing creative output, while merging art with business and policy know-how.

The programme provides an interdisciplinary curriculum focused on imparting knowledge and understanding about the artistic and business environments of the creative and cultural industries. To this end, studies will centre around four key clusters: History and Contextual Studies, Business of the Creative Enterprise, Professional Practice (Visual and Performing Arts Management Practice), and Research and Communications Skills. Emphasis is also placed on personal motivation and development of character.

Level 1 establishes the programme’s methodological and practical base, presenting the different disciplines and theoretical approaches needed for the study of arts management, including the basics of marketing, finance, and human resource. Level 2 expands on this

knowledge base with studies on aesthetics, art theory, contemporary critical theory, and analysis. Enterprise teaching commences with more advanced modules on leadership, accounting, and artist management, while the practice-based methodology is further enhanced with the conceptualising and organising of visual arts exhibitions and performing arts events under the i-AM Festival – the annual arts festival for social causes. Level 3 continues your development, translating skills, techniques, and an understanding of arts management into increasingly professional terms. A critical element at this level is an internship with an arts organisation, where you can gain practical industry experience.

Career Paths: Arts Administrator/Manager

Related Careers: Writer or Critic, Business Development Manager, Marketing/Public Relations Manager, Assistant Curator, Exhibition Manager, Event/Festival Producer, Programming Manager, Sponsorship Manager, Theatre Manager

Teaching Methods: You will learn through lectures, workshops, tutorials, seminars, local and overseas internships, and live projects. There will be regular guest lectures by industry practitioners and international visiting professors. You will participate in class presentations, complete written assignments, and put together a research project.

“The BA(Hons) Arts Management Programme at LASALLE is unique in my experience. While there may be similar programs in the field, it is the only one I know which is, essentially, a conservatory program for cultural management. Students devote their entire three-year study to the theory and practice of arts administration. The depth of training available in such a curriculum is not possible in liberal arts degree programs.” Doug Borwick, President of Association of Arts Administration Educators Association (2010 to 2012); Director, Not-for-Profit Management and Arts Management Programs from 1985 to 2012 at Salem, North Carolina, USA

Diploma in Technical and Production ManagementTechnical and Production Management deals with all the many and varied backstage roles and careers that make live performances possible. The people managing the technical aspects – Lights, Sound and Audio-Visual technology – all collaborate with performers, directors, designers, and composers, all in the same event – together with those who are managing people, managing time, and managing finances. Such skills are transferable and can be used in many careers.

This programme seeks imaginative, enthusiastic and inventive people who love theatre and live performance - but don’t want to be in front of the audience. We also seek those who love working with all the new technology, equipment and machinery involved in making a ‘show’ – from small intimate galleries to huge colourful productions like The Lion King.

Some of you like to draw, some of you like to write, some of you prefer to make a sound tape, a power-point or a collage of images. We want to know your ideas and your ambitions, what you enjoy in the Performing Arts – and we want to know what areas you are most interested in exploring. To help us get to know you and your ideas, you are invited to submit a project that manifests as many aspects as you wish, related to a story or play that you know well.

Project: Choose from either a Folk Story, a Legend or a Fairy Tale. (for example: Chang Er, Puteri Gunung Ledang or Cinderella. Something that has a story (the narrative or plot) some characters (the roles played by actors), and some meaning (theme or ‘content’). Think about how you would like to see your version of this on stage, and start to collect some ‘show and tell’ items – for example, notes, pictures, and music. (For ideas and examples, please see over page).

Your collection (or portfolio) might be a series of scrap books, a sketchbook, notes and lists, extracts from review and articles, power-point presentations, drawings, paintings, photocopies, newspaper/magazine tear-sheets, and/or DVD, sound bites, computerised graphics etc.

PRIVATE EDUCATION ACT

Established under the Private Education Act, the Council for Private Education is a statutory board empowered with the legislative power to regulate the private education sector. In addition to its role as the sectoral regulator of private education institutions, the Council facilitates capability development efforts to uplift standards in the local private education industry.

Student ContractLASALLE adopts the Council for Private Education (CPE) standard PEI-Student Contract. Students can refer to CPE website for the copy of the contract which is available in English, Chinese, and Vietnamese. Please refer to www.cpe.gov.sg for more information.

To accept the offer for admission, students are required to complete and return signed copies of the LASALLE-Student contract in order to be enrolled with the College.

For international students, the student pass will be cancelled upon such withdrawal. Any refunds will be processed in accordance with the College’s refund policy.
