from  Secondary  Catholic  Schools 

were  invited  to  a  mee ng  with 

Archbishop  Anthony  Fisher  and 

Bishop Umbers.   

College Captain, Charbel Naoum and 

College  Vice  Captain,  Steve  Hoang, 

a ended  the  event,  along  with  50 

other student leaders at Notre Dame 

University in the city.  

Archbishop Anthony Fisher spoke to 

students  about  the  upcoming 

Australian Catholic Youth Fes val  in 

December  this  year  and  their 

significant  role  as  Youth  Catholic 

Leaders in our communi es.   

A er a ques on and answer session, 

the  Archbishop  celebrated  Mass 

with  the  student  leaders  and Notre 

Dame University community.

PATRON SAINT OF TEACHERS: SAINT JOHN BAPTIST DE LA SALLE (15th May)  

Last Sunday was the celebra on of the Feast Day of Saint John Bap st de la Salle. 

John Bap st de  la Salle was born  in France  in 1651. His  family was  from  the privileged 

class,  however,  a er  entering  the  priesthood,  de  la  Salle was  commi ed  to  provide  a 

Chris an  and  human  educa on  to  young  people  and  especially  to  the  poor  and 

marginalised.    In 1680, at 29 years of age, John Bap st de  la Salle  invited young men to 

join him in developing themselves to the Chris an educa on of youth.  

On his death  in 1719, there were 100 brothers  in France. He was canonised  in 1900 and 

became the universal patron Saint of Teachers in 1950. Inspired by their Founder, the de 

La Salle Brothers developed into a world wide Chris an educa on community.  

Today, more than 8,500 Brothers and many thousands of  lay partners, suppor ve of the 

ethos and ideals of�St John Bap st de la Salle, are con nuing this tradi on in universi es, 

schools and other educa onal ins tu ons in over 80 countries.

AN EVENING WITH BR VISITOR DAVID HAWKE 

On  Tuesday  evening May  9th,  seven  Lasallian  Youth  leaders,  Stefanie 

Breda  (Lasallian Minister)  and  I  a ended  the  Young  Lasallians  Evening 

with Br Visitor David Hawke at Australian Catholic University, Strathfield.  

In  a endance  were  fellow  Lasallians  from  across  all  eight  Sydney 

schools.  The  evening  included  sharing  a  meal,  mee ng  other  young 

Lasallians  and  engaging  in  discussions  of  current  issues.  Students 

listened to Br David's experiences within various communi es and had a 

chance for a Q and A.      Maryanne Nemer 

DEBATING AT LASALLE 

The deba ng season began in Week 1 of Term 2. The deba ng compe on is run by the CSDA and occurs every Friday night for six 

weeks.  LaSalle has been a strong contender this year.  Just last week we won the majority of debates with wins from Years 7, 8 and 

12. 

Congratula ons to the Year 8 team who are currently undefeated with wins against schools such as Bethlehem College Ashfield, De 

La Salle Ashfield and Chevalier College Burradoo.  This is an extremely impressive feat and the team should be commended on their 

deba ng prowess  thus  far.   The  team  includes Stanley Ma, Harry Nguyen, Haiden Sleiman, Chloe Bozinovska, Daniella Carini and 

Umar Bin Amjad. 

There are three rounds to go, so we are keeping all teams in our prayers as they con nue with the compe on!

ROBOTICS @ LASALLE 

Last month, our  school held  a Robo cs Workshop  for TAS  teachers  across  the  Southern Region  in  the  Learning Centre.  MTA’s 

(Modern Teaching Aids) Instructor, James Dwyer, conducted an introductory workshop 

on how to build/program LEGO EV3 robo c kits and coding ac vi es for the RoboCup 

Junior Compe on.   

The teachers enjoyed the challenge of building and programming their robots.   

Mr Hawach and I a ended the workshop in prepara on for our school’s Robo cs Club, 

whereby  students  can  learn  to  build 

and  code  their  own  robots  at  school 

or poten ally in a compe on.

INFORMATION AND DIGITAL MEDIA TECHNOLOGY VET EXCURSION TO UTS 

Last  term, Year 12  IDT  students had  the opportunity  to a end The Big Day  InTM   @UTS 

(University of Technology Sydney) which is an IT careers conference designed by students 

for  students.    There  were  numerous  speakers,  exhibitors  and  over  70  organisa ons 

involved.  

 Some of the speakers included ICT employees from: 

·      Microso  

·      Google 

·      Adobe 

·      IBM 

·      CBA and Westpac 

 Even the Hon. Victor Dominello, MP (former Mister of Innova on and Be er Regula on, 

currently Minister  of  Finance,  Services  and  Property)  a ended  and  spoke  about  IT  in 

Australia.      The  IDT  students  said  that  they  enjoyed  the  opportunity.    In  par cular, 

Charlene  Garcia  (an  external  student  of  St  Yon  TTC  from  Bethany  College,  Hurstville) 

commented that “It was an  informa ve experience which gave great  insights  into the  IT 

industry”.   Also, Fred Fajloun  (student  from LaSalle Catholic College/St Yon TTC)  said “It 

was  a  great way  to  know what  is  available  in  the  future  of  IT  careers”.    All  in  all,  an 

invaluable opportunity to discover the IT industry, held at such a reputable university campus.                           Mrs Vanessa Thapaliya

YEAR 8 MEDIEVAL INCURSION 

As part of the study in Australian Geography, History, Civics and Ci zenship, Year 8 have been learning about Medieval Europe.  On 

Wednesday 10th May, Year 8 a ended an incursion in the Lecture Theatre run by James Adams from Historic Enterprises.   

Here are some of the reflec ons wri en by the Year 8s with their experience on the incursion.  

 “I  thought Medieval Europe was already  fascina ng, but  the  incursion  took  it  to a 

whole new level.” – Rudy K 

“We  learnt about how the knights  fought against other people and the armour they 

used. The Knights had to wear “mail” and I was able to try it on, it was very heavy. It 

was about 10‐16 kg. Mail was used to avoid the impact of a sword on the ba le field. 

They  had  loads  of  weapons  they  used  to  defend  themselves,  swords,  shields  and 

helmets.” – Mar na V  

“We  learnt  that  the  armour  had  improved  over  the  years.  For  example  the  helmet 

shape  went  from  point  to  flat  and  made  stronger  and  so  did  the  armour  and 

weapons.” – Mar na F  

“Another  thing  that  I  learnt was  that  there were different  types of  torture methods 

including;  stretching  of  the  limbs  and  a  skull  crusher.  Overall  this  incursion  had 

informed  me  heaps  about Medieval  Europe  and  had  been  a  good  experience.”  –

On  Sunday,  14th  May,  our  Brother  Gerry,  a ended  the 

celebra on  of  Brothers,  who  achieved  their  Golden, 

Diamond or Pla num Jubilee.  

Two  of  the  Brothers  (pictured  above),  Br  Garry  Coyte 

(Golden)  and  Br  Adrian Watson  (Golden) were  both  past 

Principals of De La Salle College Bankstown.   

This was  a wonderful  occasion  for  our  Lasallian  Religious 

Brothers to gather and celebrate.
