    IntroductionThankyouforpurchasingtheDigitalAllyLIDAR

    TheLaserAllySpeedLIDARisahighperformanceelectrooptical

    productprovidingaccuratespeedanddistancemeasurements

    customdesignedforthelawenforcementcommunity. TheLIDAR

    providespinpointtargetidentificationviaitsclearheadupdisplay

    targetingsystemandfasttargetacquisitionusingsophisticated,

    robustdataprocessingalgorithms. TheLaserAllySpeedLIDARwas

    designedforlightweightoperationandlongbatterylife.Itprovides

    numeroususefulsettingsandfeaturesincludingadvancedECCM

    (ElectronicCounterCounterMeasures),weather/obstructionmodesandaUSBinterfaceforeasydatainterfaceandupgrades.

    Mostimportantly,eachLaserAllyLIDARcomeswiththesupportof

    oneofthemostknowledgeablespeedenforcementexpertwitness

    teamsintheindustryhavingdefendedLIDARsystemssincetheir

    inceptionintheearly1990s.

    TheLaserAllySpeedLIDARisaClass1Laserproductinaccordance

    withU.S.21CFRparts1040.10and1040.11,whichissafeforusein

    allintendedoperationmodes. However,standardprecautions

    shouldalwaysbetakenwithlaserproducts:

    Avoidstaringintotheoutputapertureofthedevice,

    AvoiddirectingtheLIDARatotherindividualsforprolonged

    periods,

    DonotdirecttheoutputoftheLIDARatanyoneusingoptical

    instrumentssuchasbinocularsasthiswillincreasetheriskofeyehazard.

    Cautionuseofcontrolsoradjustmentsorperformanceof

    proceduresotherthanthosespecifiedhereinmayresultin

    hazardousradiationexposure.

    Caution:PrecisionInstrument

    YourLIDARsystemisbuilttobedurableandrobust. However,like

    anyprecisionopticalinstrument,careshouldbetakentoprotectthe

    unitfromdropsandhardimpacts. Storetheunitinacooldryplace

    WhentheLIDARunitsbatteriesbegintorunlowonpower,the

    batteryindicatorwillilluminateonboththerearpaneldisplayand

    HUD. (Note: Therearpanellowbatterysymbolwillbepartiallyfilled

    in).Theunitmaycontinuetobeused,andmaylastaconsiderable

    amountoftimeparticularlywithlowvolumesettings;howevera

    replacementsetofbatteriesshouldbehandytoavoiddowntime.

    Whenthebatteriesreachtheendoftheircapacity,therearpanel

    Note: Significantgainsinbatterylifecanberealizedbysettingthe

    TheLaserAllyLIDARcontainssophisticatedcountermeasuresto

    defeatLIDARJammingdevicesavailableintheconsumermarket

    place,whilecontinuingtodisplayaccuratespeedreadings. The

    systemalsoindicateswhenajammerorotherElectronicCounter

    Measure(ECM)isdetectedonthetargetvehiclebydisplayingthe

    phraseJamECMonthereardisplayandflashingthe

    symbolintheHUD. Notethatextremelybrightsurfacesonthe

    targetvehicle,suchashighbeamheadlightsorsunreflectionscancausethejamindicatorstoturnon. Ifyouexperienceanydifficulty

    lockinginaspeedreadingwhenJamisindicated,trymovingthe

    HUDaimingpointtoanotherlocationonthevehicle.

    InserttwoCcellbatteries,positiveendfirst,

    intothehandlecompartment. Replacethe

    SelectingSpeedMode

    TheLIDARwillnormallypowerupinSpeedmode,unlessitwas

    recentlyusedinadifferentmode. IfSpeedmodeisnotdisplayed

    onpowerup,simplypress untilthebackpaneldisplays:

    TheHeadUpdisplayprovidesaprecisionaimingreticle,speed

    reading,andotherstatusinformation. Tofindthesightingreticle,

    clickthetriggertowakeuptheLIDARandlookdirectlythroughthe

    HUDlettingyoureyesfocusonatargetwellinfrontoftheLIDAR

    unit. IfyouhaventusedaHUDdevicebefore,itmighttakeaminute

    ortwoforyoureyestoadjustthefirsttime.

    TheLIDARslaserbeamisinvisible,butwillbecontainedwithinthe

    aimingreticle. Thisisyouraimpointfortargetvehicles.

    RoadsideSetup

    WhenfirstlearningtousetheLaserAllyLIDAR,itisbesttoselecta

    straightstretchofroadwaywithalineofsightof500ft(150m)or

    more.

    Approachingorrecedingvehiclesshouldbetargetedsuchthatyour

    lineofsightthroughtheHUDisasparallelaspossibletothepathof

    thetargetvehicle. Thiswillminimizethecosineeffectasdescribed

    inAppendixAofthismanual. (Note: Thecosineeffectappliesto

    bothRADARandLIDARsystemsandalwaysresultsinaslightlylower

    thanactualreading.) Agoodruleofthumbforapproximately

    straightroadwaysistotargetavehicleatarangewhichisatleast

    tentimestheoperatorsperpendiculardistancetothevehicleslaneoftravel. Forexample,iftheoperatoris30feet(9m)fromthe

    vehicleslaneoftravel,thevehicleshouldbetargetedat300feet

    (90m),orgreater. Thiswouldresultinameasuredspeedreading

    whichwasapproximately0.5%lessthanactual.

    MeasuringVehicleSpeeds

    Forapproachingtargets,aimtheLIDARsreticleatthefrontgrillor

    frontlicenseplateofthevehicle. Goodtargetsforrecedingvehicles

    arethelicenseplateortaillights. Usetheboundariesofthereticle

    patterntoensureonlytheintendedvehicleisbeingtargeted.

    Squeezeandholdthelaserfiretriggerwhilemaintainingyouraim.

    YoumayhearanintermittentaudibletoneastheLIDARsearchesfor

    avalidtargetsignal. YouwillalsoseedisplayedintheHUD

    indicatingthelaserisfiringandareadingisbeingacquired. Once

    targetvehicledataisidentified,theLIDARwillproduceacontinuous

    lowerfrequencytone. Whenthedatafromthevehiclereachesan

    acceptableaccuracylevel,audibletonewillswitchtoacontinuous,

    higherfrequencyandthevehiclespeedreadingwillbedisplayedin

    theHUDandonthebackpanel.

    Note:Attypicaldistancestheaboveacquisitionsequencecanhappen

    veryquicklyandyoumaysimplyhearthehighfrequencytoneand

    seethespeeddisplayimmediately.

    Apositivespeedreadingwillbeshownforanapproachingvehicle,

    whilerecedingvehiclesareindicatedwithanegativereading.(Note:

    BoththeHUDandthebackpanelwillshowasignforreceding

    vehicles.)

    TheLaserAllyLIDARwillcontinuouslyupdatethetargetsspeed

    readingatanapproximaterateof3timespersecondaslongasthe

    triggerisdepressedandthedataqualityisacceptable. Whilenot

    required,itisrecommendedtotrackthevehicleforatleast1second

    toestablishrobustconfidenceinthespeedreading.

    SpeedDisplayLock

    Onceadesiredspeedreadingisacquired,theoperatorcanlock

    thespeedreadingontherearpaneldisplaybysimplyreleasingthelaserfiretrigger. Ifaspeedreadingislostaftertrackingavehicle,

    thelastspeedreadingwillflashforapproximatelytwoseconds,

    givingtheoperatoranopportunitytolockinthevehiclesspeed.

    Note: Theflashingspeedreadingwillbeimmediatelyoverwrittenif

    theoperatoracquiresanewspeedreading.

    Onceaspeedislockedintothereardisplay,itwillberetainedthere

    forupto20minutes. Ifthelaserfiretriggerisdepressedwithin30

    secondsafterthespeedislocked,thedisplaywillclearandprepare

    foranewreading. Ifnobuttonsarepressedfor30secondsafterthe

    speedreadingislocked,theunitwillgointoasleepmode,turning

    offtheHUDanddisplayingPowerSaveontherearpanelalong

    withthelockedreading. InthePowerSavestate,afirstlasertrigger

    pullwillwaketheLIDARbutretainthelockedreading. Asecond

    pullwillthenclearthereading. Thisfeatureisintendedtoaidin

    preventingtheoperatorfromaccidentallyclearingthelocked

    reading.

    RangeMode

    TheLIDARsystemcanbeusedtomeasuredistancestoavarietyof

    targets. ToenterRangeMode,presstheModeButton until

    therearpanelsdisplays:

    UsetheaimingreticleintheHUDtoselectyourdesiredtarget.

    Squeezeandholdthetriggeruntilarangereadingisdisplayedinthe

    HUDandontherearpaneldisplay. Thetriggermaybecontinuously

    heldastheunitismovedfromtargettotargetforquicklychecking

    multipleranges. Thelastrangereadinginthedisplayislockedwhen

    thetriggerisreleased. Rangereadingsaredisplayedintenthsofa

    footontherearpanelandintheHUDupto999.9FT(or999.9m).

    Abovethis,rangereadingsaredisplayedtothenearestintegerfoot

    ormeter.

    obtainedfromhighlyreflectivesurfacessuchasretroreflectiveroad

    Cleaning

    PeriodiccleaningofthefrontlensesorHUDglassisonlynecessaryif

    theyacquiresignificantdirtorotherdebristhatlimitsoptical

    transmission. Ifcleaningisnecessary,usecompressedairorasoftbrushtoremoveloosedebrisfirst. Thenuseasofttissuewithwater

    orisopropylalcohol,wipingfromthecenterofthelensoutwardina

    spiralmotion. TheHUDglassmaybecleanedwithacottonswabto

    facilitatereachingthesurfaces. Note: Ifyouencounterastainor

    speckthatcannotberemovedwithgentlepressure,donotincrease

    thecleaningpressureasthismaydamagethelenscoatings. Small

    scratchesandstainsduringthelifetimeofaunitarenormalandwill
