A Nd:YAG laser can be used for a machining process by converging the laserbeam using either a fixed optical system or an optical system using optical fibers. The proper selection of lens, spot size, assist gas and gas nozzle is based on the desired process.

OPTICAL F IBER TYPES AND PROPAGATION MODEThere are two types of optical fibers; SI (Step Index)
and GI (Grated Index). With the SI type fiber cable,
the beam reflects on the border of the core and clad.
With the GI type fiber cable, the beam expands or
spreads in the core. The type of fiber cable must be
properly selected according to the power of the beam
or uses. Generally, optical fibers are contained in
a spiral-shaped stainless steel protective tube to
prevent damage.
LASER PROCESSING OPTICAL SYSTEMThis system can be remotely controlled by flexible optical fiber cables which carry the laser beam. Thus, it is suitable for factory automation. Selectionof the fibers and focusing heads allow for greaterprocessing flexibility.
PROCESSING CHARACTERIST ICS OF THE S I & GI F IBERSEqualized transmissive distribution of the SI type
have shallow work penetration. This type is suitable
for thin materials which should have larger nuggets.
Thick materials are more suited to the GI type which
has deeper work penetration.
