INTRODUCTION Tremendous expansion in the global

telecommunication network had led to the

tremendous explosion in bandwidth demandand requirement

For the user to acess and utilize broad servicesavailaiblethrough developments designers must

provide a flexible and cost effective solution forthe last mile.

Focuses on FSO as an enabling technology thatwould help serve growing bandwidth

    requirement

    Last-mile technology is any telecommunications

technology that carries signals from the broad

    telecommunication backbone along the relatively

short distance (hence, the "last mile") to and fromthe home or business.

FSO is an optical technology that allows transmission of

video, voice, and data through the air using lasers or

LEDs (light emitting diodes). Instead of the pulses of light

being contained within a glass fiber, they are transmitted

in a narrow beam through the atmosphere.

    ECONOMICDRIVERS

FSO systems require less than one-fifth of thecapital expenditure of comparable ground-basedfiber-optic technologies

Revenue Generation for Service Providers:FSOsystems would include new SLA (service level

    agreements),QoS (quality of service)enhancements,dedicated wavelengths

    FSO APLICATIONS

Telecommunication Network Extensions:FSOcan be deployed to extend an existing areanetwork.

Enterprise: The flexibility of FSO allows it to bedeployed in many enterprise applications such

as LAN-to-LAN connectivity. Last-Mile Connectivity:These links can be

configured as PTP (point-to-point), PMP (point-to-multipoint),ring, or mesh connections, for the

    last mile.

    FSO CHALLENGES

An FSO medium is subjected to unpredictableatmospheric changes .Following issues limit theprformance:

    Weather

    Physical Obstructions

    Scintillation

    Particulate Buildup

    Swaying Buildings

    OPTSIM

OptSim is an intuitive modeling and simulationenvironment supporting the performance evaluation anddesign of the transmission level of optical

    communication systems.HIGHLIGHTS OF THE SOFTWARE:

Performance analysis and wide choice of measurements

Top simulation accuracy and speed due to the split-step

method and the algorithm optimization High flexibility for component specification

    Fast learning curve and usability

    THE BECHTEL FSO INITIATIVE

Bechtel Telecommunications, Frederick,Maryland, has commissioned an FSO system, which has been operational since March 2002.The FSO equipment being used is fSONA.

The availability, as advertised by the

manufacturer, can be up to 99.999 percent atappropriate link ranges for given weatherconditions.

    CONCLUSION

Optical wireless is a mature and reliableapproach for broadband access. There has been

tremendous increase in high-bandwidthapplications at the edge of the network. However, this is only possible with highspeed

connectivity between the edge and the core ofthe network. FSO systems offer a viable solutiontoward building optical connectivity in a cost-effective, quick, and reliable manner.
