Numbers 14:1-45

Moses and the people were in the desert. So now what? Remember: They were in the wilderness forty years.

Gen 18:14] Is any thing too hard for the LORD?A reminder that God can do the impossible:

Num 11:23; Job_42:2; Isa 50:2; Isa 59:1; Mat 19:26; Luk 1:37; 1Jn 4:4

Feeding 2-3 million people. 1,500 tons of food each day

2 freight trains each 1 mile long every day.per Quartermaster General in the Army

Fuel / wood to cooking the food. 4,000 tons of wood;

a few more freight trains each a mile long every day.

Water. If they only had enough to drink and wash a few dishes, it would take 11,000,000 gallons each day;

an 1,800 mile long tank car freight train every day

They had to get across the Red Sea at night. In a narrow path, walking double file through the piled up water of the Sea,

would require a line of march 800 miles long taking 35 days and nights to get through.

To get through in one night there had to be a dry path through the Red Sea in one night

using a dry pathway through the sea 3 miles wide they would have to walk 5,000 abreast

Each time they camped required a campground area 2/3 the size of the state of Rhode Island

>> a total of 750 square miles!

On top of this, remember their flocks and herds !!!

Do you think Moses had all this figured all out before he left Egypt?

Moses believed in God. God took care of the 'details' for him.

And do you really think God has any problem taking care of you and your daily needs?

Mat 6:11 Give us this day our daily bread.God wants us living trusting Him day to day, moment to moment - not our reserves, savings, pension, or anything.

Mat 6:24-33 (24) "No one can serve two masters;

for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other.

You cannot serve God and mammon.(25) "Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your

life, what you will eat or what you will drink; nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing?

(26) Look at the birds of the air, for they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?

(27) Which of you by worrying can add one cubit to his stature?(28) "So why do you worry about clothing? Consider the lilies of

the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin;(29) and yet I say to you that even Solomon in all his glory was

not arrayed like one of these.(30) Now if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is,

and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will He not much more clothe you, O you of little faith?

(31) "Therefore do not worry, saying, 'What shall we eat?' or 'What shall we drink?' or 'What shall we wear?'

(32) For after all these things the Gentiles seek. For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things.

(33) But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.

If I'm dependent on these other things, I will not be looking to Him until they run out and then I will be coming to Him in fear of lack - not out of a confidence in His ability to supply.

I will be limited by my resources - not His supply...

God wants us to be separated to Him for His purposes trusting Him fully...focused on Him and His plan for us completely

Sanctified means: To be separated from the world - what we don't do To be separated set apart to/for God - what do we do

Deciding to live a holy life, deciding to Follow Jesus is the beginning of the struggle - not the end. The difficult part is actually staying separated to God when the difficulties and challenges of life come upon us.

Holy living is not just a decision - It is a life style.

Israel has now finally miraculously passed through the wilderness and come up against the Jordan river. They are about to cross over and inherit the land that God has promised to them.

But to do so they need to trust in God’s ability and not their own strength and resources.

Num 13:1 And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, 2 "Send men to spy out the land of Canaan, which I am giving to the children of Israel;

from each tribe of their fathers you shall send a man, every one a leader among them."

God wanted to give them a preview of coming attractions.He knew what was there and how it would be taken

Moses sent 12 spies into the land - 1 leader from each of 12 of the 13 tribes (none from the priestly tribe of Levi)

Num 13:17 Then Moses sent them to spy out the land of Canaan, and said to them, "Go up this way into the South, and go up to the mountains,

18 and see what the land is like: whether the people who dwell in it are strong or weak, few or many;

19 whether the land they dwell in is good or bad; whether the cities they inhabit are like camps or

strongholds; 20 whether the land is rich or poor; and

whether there are forests there or not.

Be of good courage.And bring some of the fruit of the land."

Now the time was the season of the first ripe grapes.

It was about the end of July - at the time of the first-ripe grapes.

See the obstacles, See the blessing. Decide who you will follow.

Num 13:25-33 And they returned from spying out the land after forty days.

(26) Now they departed and came back to Moses and Aaron and all the congregation of the children of Israel in the Wilderness of Paran, at Kadesh;

they brought back word to them and to all the congregation, and

showed them the fruit of the land.(27) Then they told him, and said: "We went to the

land where you sent us. It truly flows with milk and honey, and this is

its fruit.(28) Nevertheless

the people who dwell in the land are strong; the cities are fortified and very large; moreover we saw the descendants of Anak

there.(29) The Amalekites dwell in the land of the South;

the Hittites, the Jebusites, and the Amorites dwell in the mountains; and

the Canaanites dwell by the sea and along the banks of the Jordan."

(30) Then Caleb quieted the people before Moses, and said,

"Let us go up at once and take possession, for we are well able to overcome it."

(31) But the men who had gone up with him said, "We are not able to go up against the people, for they are stronger than we."

(32) And they gave the children of Israel a bad report of the land which they had spied out, saying,

"The land through which we have gone as spies is a land that devours its inhabitants, and all the people whom we saw in it are men of great stature.(33) There we saw the giants (the descendants of Anak came from the giants); and we were like grasshoppers in our own sight, and so we were in their sight."

Ten came back carrying samples and stories of the land's abundance and richness and saying it was impossible;

the obstacles were to powerful for them to defeat - even with God’s help. The people heard the report and chose to believe it.

(Deut 1 Moses recounts the events at the end of the wanderings)

It is at this point we pick up scripture:Num 14:1-4 1 So all the congregation lifted up

their voices and cried, and the people wept that night.

2 And all the children of Israel complained against Moses and Aaron, and the whole congregation said to them,

"If only we had died in the land of Egypt! Or if only we had died in this wilderness!

3 "Why has the LORD brought us to this land to fall by the sword, that our wives and children should become victims? Would it not be better for us to return to Egypt?"

4 So they said to one another, "Let us select a leader and return to Egypt."

The people got caught up in emotion and feared. The people basically asked 2 questions in the passage (also complained allot):

Why did the Lord bring us to this land only to let us fall?

What kind of God would do that?Why would God provide miracle after miracle to let them die now?

Wouldn’t it be better to go back to Egypt?It was awful in Egypt. God had provided every need since leaving Egypt.

The implication is this:God doesn’t know what He is doing.

God has bitten off more than we can chew ....

1 Cor 10:13 The temptations in your life are no different from what others experience. And God is faithful.

He will not allow the temptation to be more than you can stand.

When you are tempted, He will show you a way out so that you can endure.

Israel, facing a seemingly unsurmountable situation, once again

focused on the obstacles ahead of them and not on God who was with them.

Didn’t the miracles they witnessed from God validate God’s ability to care for, protect and provide for them?

Miracles will often cause great emotion butMiracles do not generate faith Faith brings about miracles

Faith - "confidence in God" - a decision to trust God acting according to your belief regardless of whatever tough spot you happen to be in today.

Joshua and Caleb - the final two spies - returned with another point of view.Num 14:5-11 5 Then Moses and Aaron fell on their

faces before all the assembly of the congregation of the children of Israel.

6 But Joshua the son of Nun and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, who were among those who had spied out the land,

tore their clothes;7 and they spoke to all the congregation of the

children of Israel, saying: "The land we passed through to spy out is an exceedingly good land. 8 "If the LORD delights in us, then He will bring us into this land and give it to us, 'a land which flows with milk and honey.'9 "Only do not rebel against the LORD,

nor fear the people of the land, for they are our bread; their protection has departed from them, and the LORD is with us.

Do not fear them."10 And all the congregation said to stone them with

stones. Now the glory of the LORD appeared in the tabernacle of meeting before all the children of Israel.

11 Then the LORD said to Moses: "How long will these people reject Me?

And how long will they not believe Me, with all the signs which I have performed among them?

Both the ten spies and Joshua and Caleb went to the same place and saw the same thing. What was the difference between the ten and the people who believed them and the two?The ten feared the obstacle.

The two had confidence in God and trusted God to keep His word.

The two saw it as an opportunity for the God they served to demonstrate His power.

The ten placed more confidence in the obstacles ability to withstand them than they did in God’s ability to bring them success >> fear results from malplaced faith.

This was even after He had repeatedly promised to fight and provide for them and after He had demonstrated His ability to perform it.Ge 15.18-21 Promise to Abraham

Considered divine strength and support

Ignored what God had promisedRelied on what God promised

Implied God’s purposes were evil toward themAffirmed God’s plan was good

Joshua and Caleb tore their clothes - a sign of great distress - a tragedy - a sign of mourning (Nu 14:6)

They viewed the fear of the people as open REBELLION AGAINST GOD. (Nu 14:9)

God had enough - His glory appeared right in front of all the people as they moved forward to stone Moses, Aaron, Joshua and Caleb.

God was frustrated and angry.

Num 14:26-30 26 Then the LORD spoke to Moses and Aaron, saying,

27 "How long shall I bear with this evil congregation who murmur against Me? I have heard the complaints which the children of Israel murmur against Me.

28 "Say to them, 'As I live,' says the LORD, 'just as you have spoken in My hearing, so I will do to you:'

29 'The carcasses of you who have complained against Me shall fall in this wilderness, all of you who were numbered, according to your entire number, from twenty years old and above.

30 'Except for Caleb the son of Jephunneh and Joshua the son of Nun, you shall by no means enter the land which I swore I would make you dwell in.

34 'According to the number of the days in which you spied out the land, forty days, for each day you shall bear your guilt one year, namely forty years, and you shall know My rejection. (NKJ)

Was God’s reaction rash and harsh?Long overdue and justified?

Something else?Who was it that sentenced the Israelites?

Compare Num 14.2 and 14.28God just gave them what they wished for?

At first glance it might appear it was the strength of the enemy - the size of his fortresses - that caused Israel to fear.

Not true - it was that their view of God was too small...Their perception of God was smaller than their perception of the enemy.

They accused God, God wasn’t big enough, didn’t care enough, wasn’t able to handle the situation .

The enemy was not the issueIt was their belief in and about God that was the problem.

Both Faith and Fear have a future - a hopeFaith is God is rewarded - even when the way can’t be seenFear is also rewarded - not only in what is lost (blessing and victory) but in defeat and sorrow.

Abraham was accounted to be righteous because of his faith in God (Ge 15.6)

David received a kingdom because of his faith in God (2 Sam 7)

Daniel’s life was spared from the lions because of his faith (Dan 6.22)

A woman was healed of a long terrible condition because of her faith in the Lord (Mk 5.34)

Failing to trust God often drives us into greater problems that those we originally faced.

Run from God and we inevitably run into trouble.

Page 12

It is much easier to commit your future to God than it is your present.

But what faith in God demands is only this: "your right now"

Knowing that God is always faithful and trustworthy,Unbelief, Complaining, Grumbling against God or

His appointed leaders is NOT a basic Christian right - no matter how difficult things appear to be at the

moment.James 1:17 Every good gift and every perfect gift is

from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning. (KJV)

2 Pet 3:9 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. (KJV)

Living by Faith is a struggle - it is a choice of action to trust God in the face of adversity and uncertainty.The first commandment said:Exod 20:2-3 "I am the LORD your God, who

brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. 3 "You shall have no other gods before Me. (NKJ)

If we must fear, we must learn to fear Godto obey, love, and trust God above all else letting nothing else cause us to hesitate or withdraw

which is all fear really is.Heb 10:38-39 38 Now the just shall live by faith;

but if anyone draws back, my soul has no pleasure in him."

39 But we are not of those who draw back to perdition, but of those who believe to the saving of the soul. (NKJ)

Mat 10:28 28 And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. But rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.

29 Are not two sparrows sold for a copper coin? And not one of them falls to the ground apart from your Father's will.

30 But the very hairs of your head are all numbered.

31 Do not fear therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows.

32 "Therefore whoever confesses Me before men, him I will also confess before My Father who is in heaven.

33 But whoever denies Me before men, him I will also deny before My Father who is in heaven.

Anything that not based in simple faith in God is either motivated by self confidence or distrust and rebellion against God.

Heb 11:6 But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him. (NKJ)

Heb 3:12-19 12 Beware, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief in departing from the living God;

13 but exhort one another daily, while it is called "Today," lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin.

14 For we have become partakers of Christ if we hold the beginning of our confidence steadfast to the end,

15 while it is said: "Today, if you will hear His voice, do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion."

16 For who, having heard, rebelled? Indeed, was it not all who came out of Egypt, led by Moses?

17 Now with whom was He angry forty years?

Page 14: Last week we learned that to be separated to God for His ...crosstraining.us/files/120810_Whats_your_problem.docx  · Web viewFuel / wood to cooking the food. 4,000 tons of wood;

Page 14

Was it not with those who sinned, whose corpses fell in the wilderness?

18 And to whom did He swear that they would not enter His rest, but to those who did not obey?

19 So we see that they could not enter in because of unbelief. (NKJ)

As long as Peter kept his eye fixed on Jesus, even the wind and the waves were no obstacle - he walked across them - just like Jesus did.

When he focused on the wind and waves however and took his eyes off the Lord, they overtook him. Mat 14.25-31

2 Cor 4:16-18 16 Therefore we do not lose heart. Even though our outward man is perishing, yet the inward man is being renewed day by day.

17 For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, is working for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory,

18 while we do not look at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen. For the things which are seen are temporary, but the things which are not seen are eternal. (NKJ)

Faith and Fear are the same spiritual force - the same spiritual activity.

Fear is faith in the wrong thing.Fear is having more confidence in the power behind failure than in God’s power and ability to bring success.

Where are your sights fixed?What are you standing on?

Isa 58:8 Then your light will break forth like the dawn, and your healing will quickly appear; then your righteousness will go before you, and the

glory of the LORD will be your rear guard.

Endurance Training: CalebCaleb, one of two spies who trusted God, is one of the unsung heroes of the Bible. He stands as a shining example of one who never lost his edge spiritually. At that point in the history of God's people, the Israelites had finally made it to the long-awaited promised land, and Joshua was dispersing portions of it to the various tribes. Caleb suddenly spoke up and asked for the land he had surveyed.

Joshua granted faithful Caleb what he asked. Yet the old man proved he had not yet exhausted his courage, for then he said:Jos 14:10-14(10) "Now, as you can see, the LORD has kept me

alive and well as He promised for all these forty-five years since Moses made this promise—even while Israel wandered in the wilderness. Today I am eighty-five years old.

(11) I am as strong now as I was when Moses sent me on that journey, and I can still travel and fight as well as I could then.

(12) So give me the hill country that the LORD promised me. You will remember that as scouts we found the descendants of Anak living there in great, walled towns. But if the LORD is with me, I will drive them out of the land, just as the LORD said."

(13) So Joshua blessed Caleb son of Jephunneh and gave Hebron to him as his portion of land.

(14) Hebron still belongs to the descendants of Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite because he wholeheartedly followed the LORD, the God of Israel.

The other guys must have thought old Caleb was senile. Hebron was not some beautiful green pasture; it was one of the most treacherous mountainous areas of the

Page 16: Last week we learned that to be separated to God for His ...crosstraining.us/files/120810_Whats_your_problem.docx  · Web viewFuel / wood to cooking the food. 4,000 tons of wood;

Page 16

promised land. Worse, formidable adversaries, identified as the three sons of Anak, lived there.

No one wanted to take them on except 85-year-old Caleb, holding up that muscular old arm, saying, "Give me this mountain."Caleb boldly ran up the mountain.

He slew his adversaries. He was victorious. He had been strong all those years,

and he finished well.Jos 15:13-15 13 The LORD commanded Joshua to assign some of

Judah's territory to Caleb son of Jephunneh. So Caleb was given the town of Kiriath-arba (that is, Hebron), which had been named after Anak's ancestor.

14 Caleb drove out the three groups of Anakites—the descendants of Sheshai, Ahiman, and Talmai, the sons of Anak.

15 From there he went to fight against the people living in the town of Debir (formerly called Kiriath-sepher).

Let me share some principles with you from Caleb's life that can give us this spiritual stamina we need to run and indeed finish in the race of life.1. Follow the Lord 100 percent.

Scripture says again and again that Caleb "wholly followed the Lord." It's in Joshua 14:8-9 and verse 14 too: Joshua blessed Caleb and gave the old man what he asked because "he wholly followed the Lord God of Israel."This is clearly a key to Caleb's spiritual success. What does it mean to "wholly follow the Lord"?

It means that you must fully follow our Lord not halfheartedly, but completely.

Page 17: Last week we learned that to be separated to God for His ...crosstraining.us/files/120810_Whats_your_problem.docx  · Web viewFuel / wood to cooking the food. 4,000 tons of wood;

Page 17

One hundred percent. Are you wholly following the Lord your God?

If not, you will be picked off eventually. It is only a matter of time until you become a casualty in the race of life.

2. Don't compromise - stand your ground. At the risk of being personally ostracized, Caleb took a stand for what was he knew was true.

He knew he needed to be more concerned with God's approval than man's.

And he was rewarded.As you walk with the Lord, you will face many temptations to cave in to peer pressure, to do what everybody else does.

If you are going to fully follow the Lord you must make this principle operative in your life. Stand firm-seek God's pleasure, no one else's.

3. Take God at His Word. Caleb didn't win immediate entrance to the promised land.

He had to wander around with those ungrateful, complaining Israelites for 40 years.

They continually said things like: Nu 11:5 ...remember the fish we ate in Egypt at no cost

also the cucumbers, melons, leeks, onions and garlic.Despite the Israelites' childish clinging to fictitious memories, Caleb hung on to the promises of God.

He knew God would be faithful, regardless of the time frame.

Caleb trusted God's word to him. We can and must do the same.

4. Long for fellowship with your God.

Page 18: Last week we learned that to be separated to God for His ...crosstraining.us/files/120810_Whats_your_problem.docx  · Web viewFuel / wood to cooking the food. 4,000 tons of wood;

Page 18

Caleb asked for a place in the promised land called Hebron. Hebron in the original language means "fellowship, love, and communion."

Hebron is where Abraham met with God face-to-face and received the promise of the new land in the first place.

Caleb yearned for fellowship with God. While the other Israelites longed for Egypt, Caleb

longed for Hebron. While the others looked back, Caleb looked

forward. While others wanted to please themselves, Caleb

wanted to please God.5. You must always move forward.

You must always seek to grow spiritually and never look back. Remember Lot's wife Gen 19

That's what will keep you going. If you are living this Christian life for others' applause following the crowd, you won't make it. You have to live trusting God because of His love for you and your love for God.

What you love, you treasure.Where your treasure is will determine your character and walk through life.
