    the US and the European Union to slash farm subsidiesand open agricultural markets to competition.

    o "Everybody is interested" in concluding the Dohanegotiations, Brazilian Foreign Minister CelsoAmorimsaid yesterday, but "that can only be achieved if we agreeon the agriculture aspect: that is, on eliminating subsidies

    in developed countries and (gaining) greater access to theirmarkets.

    India pips US to become 2nd largestcotton producer

    India has overtaken the US as the second-largestcotton producer in the world for the 2006-07season. And it is set to retain the position nextseason starting October.

    Mr. D.K. Nair, Secretary-General of theConfederation of Indian Textile Industry said:

    the US saw some cotton areas being switched tograins as the latters price hit multi-year highs in thecommodities market in the last two years.

    Indias cause has been helped by concerted effortsof the Centre, growers and textile industry.

    The plantation sector can expect a big boost in theBudget. The government is planning to unveil a slew ofmeasures to boost domestic production and export ofcashew, rubber, cardamom, pepper, tea and coffee.

    The package could include a special fund forrejuvenation and replantation on the lines of the oneexisting for tea.

    Since this is the UPA governments last Budget andplantation is a sensitive sector ,it play a major role in

    the economy of southern, eastern and north-easternstates being large employment generators

    Water availability for agriculture

    may dip up to 12% by 2025 Water availability for agriculture is estimated to godown by up to 12 percent from the current level by2025 if remedial measures are not taken, a top scientistof the country on Thursday warned.

    "The water availability for agriculture is projected to be

    10-12 per cent of what is now available," DirectorGeneral of Indian Council of Agricultural ResearchMangala Rai said while inaugurating the Krishi VigyanMela here.

    He said the farmers would in fact require 25 per cent

    more water in 2025 than what they are consumingcurrently to produce food grains for feeding thedomestic population.

    The ICAR DG also said that the country can produce 40-50 million tons more food grains by increasing the
