Craft, Design, and Technology at Hawick High School

Metal Machine Tools Centre Lathe Processes Facing Usually the first process performed. A cut is made across the end of the metal to make it right angles to the axis and remove any marks from cutting.

Parallel Turning Cutting along the metal, parallel to its axis, to reduce its diameter.

Tapering Using the compound slide this is some-where between facing off and parallel turning to cut the metal to something like a cone shape. The angle can be changed by adjusting the compound slide. Parting When the part is finished it is best to re-move it in a similar way to facing the ends. The parting tool must be moved in slowly. As the cut is made deeper the tool must be pulled out and moved to the side to make the cut wider to stop the tool sticking and breaking.
