Introduction
Lattix Systems AS’ vision is to be the leader of safety equipment within its field. For more than two decades, the company has been in the very forefront of frangible mast development and deliveries.
With installations in well over 200 airports across more than 40 countries, Lattix Systems already is a major player in the global frangible market. Working closely with local designers and contractors, the airport owners can rest assured that airports fitted with frangible solutions from Lattix are safe and ICAO compliant, and will contribute to a sound and economical investment.
More ever, with the long term focus on recyclability and sustainability, the Lattix® systems contribute to a safer and cleaner environment for generations to come.
About LattixLattix was established in 1984 under the name of Juralco AS. The group now consists of four companies under the holding company Juralco AS.
Juralco AS is a holding company which owns the other companies in the group and their patents and immaterial rights. Juralco AS also handles large projects and research and development.
Lattix AS is the group’s main employer. The company is responsible for operational management, technology, manufacture and sale of Lattix signposts and gantries to dealers and authorised distributors.
Lattix Systems AS is the sales channel aimed directly at project managers at airports (international market) and road projects. The Lattix system covers a wide spectrum of applications, including: passive safety structures for ITS (Intelligent Traffic Systems) structures for road lighting above and along the side of the carriagewaystructures for all kinds of sensors, signals and lighting at airports
The company’s historyLattix AS has developed and manufactured aluminium lattice masts from day 1. Our products have proven to be excellent for traffic signs along roads and for landing lights at airports.
Lattix pioneered the development of a soft, lightweight and collision-friendly traffic mast and began experimenting with a passively safe mast design superior to anything else on the market in the 1980s. Lattix’ characteristic 3-dimensional X pattern is now the market leader in many countries.
Strong focus on continuous product development, research and testing has made us market leader in Europe, and we are now going for international growth. The Lattix Group has sold more than 30,000 masts, and has a solid financial basis for further development.

Compliance documentation
The company has long experience in providing documentation on compliance to regulations.
It has been in the frangible segment since the late 1980-ties, long before ICAO published its first frangible requirements.
With functional and safety requirements from both the traffic sector on passive safety, and the aviation sector on frangibility, the Lattix products have been tested and certified since mid 1990-ties.
The testing is regularly supported by computer simulations.
The Lattix masts have been crash tested to the European standard EN 12767 Passive safety of support structures for road equipment- Requirements and test methods, and to the ICAO Aerodrome Design Manual, part 6 Frangibility. The first full scale ICAO compliance test was performed at Lista test center the summer of 1997, soon followed by EN 12767 testing for road safety.
In addition, regular strength testing in accordance with EN 12899-1 and documented quality controls ensure that the product maintain its quality and meet its specifications.
Lattix has a long tradition of using 3rd party documentation from independent test-institutions as basis for approvals from authorities or notified bodies. Approvals are then issued by the authorities, and the letter from Avinor on this page is an example of this.
Lattix masts are now being CE marked according to EN 12899.

LATTIX STATEMENT ON QUALITY ASSURANCE Traffic and Aviation
GeneralLattix® systems are used as traffic sign support equipment for signs, signals, lighting, antennas, awos, surveillance and other information systems. The Lattix system consists of three different masts; 4420, 4425 and 4438. The system also consists of many parts that can be used to build a number of different constructions.
Strength – capacity and stiffnessThe Lattix masts strength characteristics are documented in accordance with the EN 12899-1 standard. Since 2005 more than 70 masts have been tested by Sintef / NTNU in Trondheim Norway. The masts capacity and stiffness values are determined from these tests, and are given on data sheets for each mast. Regular controls are carried out to ensure strength is consistent.
Safety – collision safe Lattix masts are designed to absorb energy when hit by a car or airplane accidently. This will reduce personal injuries in traffic. Lattix masts are tested and approved according to EN 12767 and ICAO Aerodrome Design Manual Part 6, Frangibility, for both single and multiple mast constructions. The tests are performed at Nordic Test Centre at Lista in Norway. The test reports are issued to for approval by the national road authorities. Approval letters are available on request.
Material properties The strength requirements for the aluminium material to be used for the Lattix masts are high, and have to be documented by certificates from the aluminium extruding company.
Heat treatmentThe masts are heat treated in a furnace specially built for Lattix masts, where every parts of the process are controlled, logged and documented. This include controls after the process. The furnace is certified regularly by the supplier and conformity to EN-746-1 is documented.
TraceabilityEach sidewall is permanently marked with a batch material code. Material certificates and records from controls during the production process can be traced to this code. The Lattix masts are well prepared for the traceability and material quality documentation demands for CE-marking requirements.
Certificates to customers ISO 9000 certificates of plants involved in the production process.Material certificate on aluminium in masts Material certificate on baseplates Material certificate on bolts Other quality documentation can be issued on request.

Unique Lattix Features ◊ Frangible and sustainable ◊ Scalable/cuttable on site ◊ Lightweight aluminium ◊ Folding hinge ◊ Counterweight system ◊ Straightforward assembly ◊ Integrated Cable Protection ◊ Low Total Cost of Ownership ◊ Cost efficient maintenance ◊ Non-intrusive material ◊ Non-welded/non-glued assembly
Approach lights
Manufacturing crossbars in aluminium rather than steel makes for lighter products that are just as strong as steel, but significantly lighter, providing added safety and ease of installation. Additionally, the reduction in weight means that bearing mast constructions may also be reduced in weight and volume. Reduced weight also makes the components easier to transport and to hoist into position.
Further, the aluminium crossbars have been thoroughly redesigned: there are now fewer parts to assemble and the assembly process has been made simpler, more intuitive and considerably faster. A new hinge design makes maintenance easier, and a counterweight system makes previously challenging tasks such as replacement and adjustment of crossbar-mounted lights and signals straightforward. Also, cable durability is ensured by an integrated cable protection system.
Lattix Systems aviation masts and crossbars are renowned for diligent compliance with international aviation standards and regulations, well tested frangibility and a strong focus on safety and cost efficient design. The unique aluminium products are thoroughly tested and completely compliant with international ICAO standards. Lattix Systems products for airports are the only ICAO-compliant mast- and crossbar solution suited to on-site cutting and scaling.

GP (ILS) systems
The primary function of the Glide path (GP) structure is to support the glide path radiating antennas and DME receiving/transmitting antennas. The solution includes the requirements for optional safety climbing and is subject to very strict tolerances.
The structure is constructed, and material selected, to optimize frangibility (safety) as per ICAO regulations and even beyond. The structure must withstand the forces of jet blast, wind, ice, weather present on the airfield. Also, the structure need to withstand the added force of the equipment mounted on the structure for its intended use.
And without compromising on safety or strength.
The solution is sustainable and environmental safe.
The structure is constructed with functional and material focus, using:
◊ corrosive resistant material ◊ sustainability and recyclability ◊ aluminium lattice structure ◊ none–intrusive material
In order to maximize safety and durability in structure, effort has been put into assembly processes of the structures, such as:
◊ none-welded production and assembly processes, and ◊ none-adhesive bonding.

Antennas and WiFi systems
On or near Runway communication antenna systems such as WiFi and WLAN are growing in number and complexity. With traffic increasing, as well as the number of installed masts, there is also a need to ensure frangibility and safety.
Detection of humans and animals on or near Runway is also an important security issue on and around the airport.
Perimeter surveillance systems
Safety comes first! There is always a need for visual control and surveillance of the runway and the safety zone around.
Also, adding the safety and environmental aspect to the rest of the airport security systems, Lattix fits in perfectly and add frangibility and smart maintenance solutions for all areas “inside the fence”. Further adding to safety, low maintenance cost, and sustainability.

Foundation casting
1. Excavate a pit for foundation, make form (shuttering)
2. Anchor bolts (4 for square masts) shall be caste in the pit. In order to get the right position one template is delivered to each type of mast. The anchor bolts are mounted on the template with nuts and washers, thus keeping them in correct position
3. The anchor bolts shall be mounted to allow 110 mm of the bolt to be visible over the surface of the template.
4. The bolts shall be firmly fastened to the template; they shall be parallel to each other and perpendicular to the template.
5. The template shall be positioned in the excavated foundation pit.
6. The underside of the template should be positioned about 50 mm (2 “) above the finished concrete. The easiest way to do this is to lay a couple of 2” logs across the pit and let the template ride on these.
7. Fill the pit with concrete
8. When the concrete has cured, remove the template and use it in the next pit. Leave the lower nut and washer mounted on the bolts, they will be the lower support for the mast later on.

Assembly instructions, masts
1 a) GeneralThe Lattix® Aviation System consists of frangible aluminium masts with accessories. The Lattix masts are mainly used at airports, carrying approach lights, meteorological equipment, antennas etc. The aluminium masts can be of triangular or square cross-sections. The choice of mast is dependant of the actual height and how much equipment which will be mounted on the mast.
Masts are described in two classes, Class 1 and 2.
◊ Class 1 are aluminium tubes for one-light setup, with height ≤ 1,5m. ◊ Class 2 are masts with crossbar setup and/or heights above 1,5m.
Lattix masts for approach lights:
Height (m) Class Foundation plate Middle Hinge Mast type
0-1,5 1 Fixed No Aluminium tube
1,6-2,0 2 Fixed No Square mast
2,0-4,0 2 Hinged No Square mast
4,0-16,0 2 Fixed Yes Square mast
Accessories for masts will typical consists of:
◊ Raising/lowering device (for mid-hinged masts) ◊ Combined adaptors for CL/Flash light or LI light ◊ Crossbars with light adaptors ◊ Fixing rails and clamps for electrical lockers
b) Masts with one sectionMasts in one section are shipped fully assembled with base plate and top plate.
c) Masts with two sectionsMasts with two sections are shipped fully assembled with base plate, hinge and top-plate. If the full length of the mast exceeds 7,5 m the mast will be delivered folded.
d) Masts with three sectionsMasts with three sections might be delivered in 1, 2 or 3 pieces depending on the length of the transporting vehicle. The base-plate and top-plate will be mounted and the lower and upper part of the hinge is mounted on the two sections and must be connected by the stainless steel hinge-bolt which will be supplied. The connecting plate between the lower and middle mast will be mounted to one of them. Bolts for mounting the other mast section to the connecting plate are supplied. These bolts must be mounted with a torque of 35 Nm. The different parts forming one mast are marked with a unique identification number.

e) Lever armsLever arm is supplied to mid-hinged masts. Normally it is shipped mounted to the mast, but it might be supplied un-mounted. The lever arm is then placed inside the lower mast section.
The lever arm shall be bolted to the hinge and, when the mast is raised, be secured to the cradle fixed to the lower mast section.
All necessary bolts (stainless steel) will be provided.
f) CrossbarsCrossbars are not mounted to the masts, and are packed separately.
NOTE: The crossbars must be mounted to the correct masts. Refer to the documentation
A top plate is pre-mounted on top of the masts, and the crossbar screwed on to this top plate with 2 crossbar fixings. The crossbars shall be mounted symmetrically on the mast. Fixtures for Light-adaptors (next paragraph) are mounted on the crossbar, and the crossbar must be turned to a position where the light-adaptors will be vertical when mounted.
Light adaptors
The light adaptors are aluminium tubes, Ø60 mm and length 700 mm. The light adaptor shall be mounted in the clamps mounted on the crossbar. They are easily adjusted to the correct height.
Flash adaptors/centre lights
Flash adaptors are aluminium tubes, Ø60 mm, length 1000 mm. Centre light tubes are 700mm lengths.
Both are mounted to the mast by using the L-shaped fixing on the top-plate of the mast.
g) Masts typicalSee separate data sheets and system drawings.
