Objectives of WBTi

• To provide critical information to governments, needed to bridge gaps in infant and young child feeding policy and practice

• To provide evidence to IBFAN groups to advocate for greater effort and investment to promote breastfeeding and optimal infant and young child feeding practices in the respective countries and regions

• To contribute to improved development outcomes in children, reducing undernutrition, child morbidity and mortality and improve women’s health.

World Breastfeeding Trends Initiative (WBTi)

• Quantitative measure of 15 indicators

• Multiple questions for each indicator (1 or 2 points/question)

• 10 points possible for each indicator

• Range of WBTi score is 0 to 150

Afghanistan • Data on infant and young child feeding practices collected, which did not exist earlier• Implemented several programmes in the health system to mainstream counseling on breastfeeding• Started conducting training on breastfeeding counseling and complementary feeding for health care providers• The International Code of Marketing of Breastmilk Substitutes became a regulation under MoPH

Bhutan •IYCF Indicators introduced into the National Nutrition Survey, which made available the data on infant and young child feeding practices collected •Developed a National Strategy and Policy on IYCF

India •Increased Maternity Leave for women in Central Government •Financial maternity benefits to pregnant and lactating women

Maldives •Data on infant and young child feeding practices collected, which did not exist earlier

Nepal •Development of National Nutrition Policy and Strategy by the Government of Nepal, International NGOs & Local NGOs working in Nepal in support of IYCF •Government of Nepal with support from various International NGOs & Local NGOs started carrying out training of different level of health professionals on IYCF

Pakistan •Government has notified the implementation of Breastfeeding Law (Ordinance) with rules & regulations•Developed curriculum/manual on IYCF training for Community Health Workers

Costa Rica •Developed a new breastfeeding policy with clear institutional guidelines for Infant Feeding in Emergencies •National standards on Human Milk Banking

Dominican Republic

•Developed a comprehensive policy on Infant Feeding and Emergencies•National Breastfeeding Committee has started functioning

Colombia • Developed a comprehensive strategy on early childhood care in people affected by displaced by violence and included infant feeding in disaster situations

El Salvador • MOH officially established the National Breastfeeding Commission• National Congress declared the whole month of August as month of breastfeeding• A law on breastfeeding submitted to the congress using WBTi assessmnet as supporting document to lobby

Uruguay • Enacted the National Breastfeeding Policy as Minister order in 2009 as recommended by WBTi assessment

Guatemala • Moved the National Breastfeeding Committee to develop 5 year strategic plan for enhancing breastfeeding rates

Gambia • Validated a new Nutrition Policy

Uganda •Led to development of National Policy guideline for IYCF and a district specific 5 year strategic plan

Kenya • The new WHO guidelines on HIV and Infant Feeding was adapted and included in the MIYCN policy, startegy and guidelines• Also used WBTi Score card to involve media houses in broadcasting breastfeeding information

Study demonstrates implementation of the Global Strategy as measured by WBTi is significantly associated with trends in EBF

Strengthen by case studies, the study shows that this association is measurable and possibly causal
