Launching Ramps For Trailerable Yachts Around Victoria

T his booklet has been prepared by Sonata Yacht Association of Victoria (SYAV) from work as a member of the Yachting Victoria (YV) Trailerable

Yacht Division (TYD) Infrastructure Committee to provide a compact reference for Sonata Association members.

Perceived Necessary Requirements of Boat Ramps and Associated facilities:

• Concrete ramp allowing two or more concurrent launch and retrievals. • Suitable depth of water in all tide conditions. • Allows “mast-up” launch and retrieval. • The alternative of mast-down launch and retrieval can be dangerous if

weather conditions become bad. • Adequate shelter from prevailing winds and sea. • Wharfs or floating pontoons to tie-up to after launching and before retrieval. • Car park for secure parking of trailers and towing vehicle. Further options also considered of importance. • Availability of toilet facilities. • Proximity of shops. • Availability of fuel.

Members are also recommended to go to the following website for details about many Victorian and Interstate launch ramps. www.baum.com.au/ramps - the Boat Ramps Notepad Google Earth also can provide close-up views and maps to all ramps.

WP 9 - Rhyll, Phillip Island Ref: “Boat Ramps Notepad” - www.baum.com.au Location:

Description & recommendation:

Be careful on a very low tide on this ramp when you feel the big bump at the bottom, that's the end of the concrete and there's a big drop from there to the mud. Many boaties have gone over and it ruins their day trying to retrieve trailers once they're over. Also to new users of this ramp in bad conditions, this ramp can have a fast flowing current and when the wind matches the current you need to be very careful how you drive onto your trailers. • Car and Trailer Parking:
