Launching the first national air quality index in New Delhi on Monday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said India's contribution to the pollution level in the world was one of the lowest and urged the countrymen to change their lifestyle in order to help protect the environment.Speaking at the inauguration of a two-day conference of state environment and forest ministers, PM Modi expressed hope that the conference will prove to be a platform to hold detailed discussions which might be formulated in policies in future."We are trying to think of ways of reducing carbon emissions, but we are not thinking of changing our lifestyle. Unless we bring a change in our lifestyle, we will not be able to save the environment," said Modi.

Students have been suffering from ailments caused by the heavy smog and the poor air quality index. With nearly 50,000 autos gearing up to Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) conversion, electronic autos may be the way forward with city administrators worrying about the increasing pollution levels in the city. to curb pollution woes in the city

The following are some of these measures: 1. The Delhi government has proposed the odd/even rule wherein cars with odd-numbered registration plates would ply on odd dates and those with even-numbered registration plates would do so on even dates. The idea is to reduce congestion as well as to reduce pollution resulting from vehicular emissions considered the worlds most polluted city2. 3. In recent years, air pollution has acquired critical dimensions in most Indian cities, putting people at additional risk of respiratory diseases and other health problemsTo help stop pollution, a factory can modify its procedures or use different equipment. For example, filters onsmokestackscan help stop pollution by catching harmful substances and cleaning fumes before they reach the air.Smokestacks are a type of chimney, often used in industrial settings, that release the byproducts of combustion into the air. The gases emitted through smokestacks largely consist ofcarbon dioxideand water vapor, factories use biofiltration techniques to reduce air pollution.Biofiltrationis a pollution control technique using living material to capture and biologically degrade pollutants. Common uses include processing waste water, capturing harmful chemicals or silt from surface runoff, and microbiotic oxidation of contaminants in air.Outdoor pollutionPollutantsof major public health concern include particulate matter, carbon monoxide, ozone, nitrogen dioxide and sulfur dioxide. Both ambient (outdoor) and household (indoor)air pollutioncause respiratory and other diseases, which can be fatal.Smogis a kind of air pollution, originally named for the mixture of smoke and fog in the air. Classicsmogresults from large amounts of coal burning in an area and is caused by a mixture of smoke and sulfur dioxide. In the 1950s a new type ofsmog, known as PhotochemicalSmog, was first described.Strict action should be taken to stop old trucks buses or car because old vehicle also responsible for polluting the Air. There is law which says if a vehicle is not environment friendly it must not be used for transportation, but still these vehicles are running on roads. IF we can not stop diesel vehicle in Delhi/NCR,Diesel Particulate Filter(DPF) could be fitted into older vehicles, including heavy duty commercial vehicles to reduce emissions.
