    Delivery to the Customers:

On the show of the cash memo indicating room no. and date

of order, the delivery boy lets the customer know whether his

    clothes are ready or not.

If he is aware that the clothes for that days lot have arrived,he checks on the delivery rack and on finding them there, he

    delivers it and accepts cash.

The person on the counter also takes a note of the amount

cash collected in a separate register.

CAUSESFORBADSERVICELEVELINLAUNDRY Increased Order fill time (OFT):

Since the process is not mechanised, loss in productivity can causebackorders and piling of clothes at the Counter or Washing Area either dueto controllable factors (issues due to manpower, bad scheduling, bundlemishandling, and transportation) or uncontrollable factors (bad weather, intermittent power cuts)

Sudden spike in customer orders (due to bad weather, after a longweekend, some college activity, exam time) will cause a piling ofclothes since the capacity (washing/ironing) is just matching tomeet the demand.

There is NO system to ensure that piles of clothes received in aday are washed and stacked together so that misplacing of clothesis avoided at Katraj facility.

Power cut while washing can cause over soaking and the clothescolour may get damaged.

Washing of soft clothes with heavy items can damage the textureover a period of time.

There is NO system to customize washing for a particular clothwhich has dark stains. The laundry on student complaints re-takeswashing of the same cloth in the same way as bulk washing isdone, which makes it no better.

    SUGGESTIVE PROCESS IMPROVEMENTSINTHE

    EXISTING LAUNDRY:

The two separate counters at Boys and Ladies Hostel

could be replaced by a single counter at a common areathereby reducing manpower by 1 and rent of facility by say50% if a combined counter is of larger size and rent is7500 pm.

Ironing process may not be outsourced and the people

can be hired on wage basis rather than by piece basis. This leads to both increases in customer service levels aswell as reduced cost of the laundry owner. Even If 3people are hired for this purpose assuming 5000 perperson per month, it will lead to a saving of 36,000 per

year increasing the profit by 15 percent. The clothes should go to drying as soon as they are out of

the process from hydro dryer so that the capacity ondrying can be increased to face a peak order. It will lead toformation of a capacity buffer at the drying process.

    21/22

    SUGGESTIVE PROCESS IMPROVEMENTSINTHE

    EXISTING LAUNDRY............CONTD.

The marking of clothes needs to be improved to includedifferent marks for different people staying in the sameroom so that Order fill accuracy (OFA) can be improved.

The room wise sorting can be done at the facility atKatraj in the morning once the clothes have been driedand then they can be separated according to roomnumbers. It leads to more capacity at ironing as well ascustomer service counter.

Some amount of value added service like minor stitchrepairs, button fixing, zipper change, hemming, etc. canbe done at the front end counter by the ironing personand this will be added revenue at no extra cost otherthan a sewing machine and having a ironing person withbasic stitching skills.
