Dear Hiring Committee,

I am writing to recommend Laura Anne Turner for employment. Ms. Turner was enrolled as my student in my Professional Writing class at the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga in the fall of 2014 and she would make an excellent addition to your company.

Ms. Turner is one of the most promising students I have encountered at UTC. She is professional in her approach to her studies and takes great care and pride in all of her work. In order to meet the needs of a professional writing class, I assign a large number of written projects and Laura was always well organized and submitted careful work that often received one of the highest grades in the class. In fact, she often set the standard and submitted assignments that could be used as examples to help students who were not as adept with the conventions and demands of writing in a professional setting.

For one particular assignment, students were asked to write a letter of compliment or complaint to a business. Laura wrote a letter to a local restaurant that had provided very subpar customer service. Her letter was so thoughtfully crafted that, despite it being necessitated by negative circumstances, the restaurant manager contacted Laura and offered her an assistant manager position. Though food service is obviously not Ms. Turner’s professional goal at this point in time, it’s quite an accomplishment that she was able to complain to a business in such a manner that they wanted to bring her on board!

Another key aspect of the class is a large group project that spans the semester and culminates in a final paper and presentation. Laura impressed me with her ability to take the lead and bring together a diverse group of her peers, including a foreign student and one with a disability. Other students respect Laura’s opinion and her interactions demonstrate confidence and respect for the opinions of others. In class discussions, Laura is a thoughtful and engaged participant.

In Ms. Turner you will find a dedicated and enthusiastic employee who would be an excellent addition to any organization. I can think of

no former student who I would be as enthusiastic to recommend. If you have any further questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me.

Sincerely,
