The CIMSmart sensor takes center stageSmart sensor technology from Bosch Rexroth for today’s hard working cylinders

The CIMSmart sensor can be monitored with a PC or a PLC, to ensure that the cylinder is working optimally.

Bosch Rexroth introduces the CIMSmart sensor, the industry leader’s newest contactless cylinder sensor technology. The CIMSmart sensor not only allows an operator to control or monitor the cylinder movement, it also provides vital information about the application of the (large) hydraulic cylinder. The smart Cylinder Integrated Measuring System (CIMS) makes use of unique technologies to provide highly accurate, reliable and longlasting measurement of large hydraulic cylinder motion and performance data.

Keeping it in checkCylinder strokes need to be measured, in order to see whether the cylinder is performing optimally, how it’s being used, if there is a problem, and what led to the problem. The CIMSmart can monitor the cylinder’s stroke measurement and positioning, and track and evaluate the overall system performance. The feedback can be used as input for root cause analysis of system malfunctions, as well as for condition monitoring methods and systems.

details such as movement and temperature history, minimum and maximum temperature, maximum speed, maximum deceleration and acceleration and whether the cylinder has been making shorter or longer strokes. For example, with this information, service engineers can take preventive maintenance measures before cylinder damage becomes too extreme.

Robust performanceWhether for a drilling platform in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, or for an industrial crane at a large construction site on land, it is important that the cylinders continue to perform well. The CIMSmart’s robust stainless steel housing protects the electronics inside it from almost every kind of environment. Because it’s waterproof to 10 bar, the CIMSmart can be submerged in fresh or salt water up to 100 metres. And, it’s available with ATEX zone 1 certification, for use in potentially explosive atmospheres.

Easy to useThe CIMSmart has an easy Plug & Play set up. No (manual) calibration needed; the CIMSmart sensor will compensate automatically for mounting tolerances, magnetic disturbances and temperature effects. Its contactless operation means no wearing parts and no slide pad. A PC or PLC can be used to communicate with the sensor and, along with the application monitoring data from the sensor, to retrieve the results of the CIMSmart selfdiagnostics.
