“Ego Amo Te” (Latin for I Love You). That’s what Stella Violet Birkett and her 4-year-old great-granddaughter Macie said to each other daily. They will do it no more as Stella passed away peacefully at age 93 on Nov. 19, 2019, at her home in Kearny, AZ. Her son Glenn would say she “shuffled off this mortal coil.” He is a swimmer in Flagstaff. Stella’s long, productive, and happy life began in Kenosha, Wisconsin on July 1, 1926. She was the daughter of Stanley Naidicz, a Polish immigrant, and his wife Francis. She worked her way through high school waitressing at Frank’s Diner in Kenosha. She worked most of her life doing jobs in San Francisco, CA. Stella owned a

Stella Violet Birketthardware store in Sierra Vista, AZ, stocking prophylactics at the post exchange on Fort Huachuca. She was also the “Sears Lady” in San Manuel, AZ and even toiling as a “greeter” at the grand opening of Norm’s Market in Kearny, AZ, where her favorite daughter, Mary, is the manager. She also left her mark on Columbus, OH. In 1951 she married the love of her life, Berle Birkett. He was a Navy veteran and they enjoyed attending the reunions of the world renowned U.S.S. DeGrasse Liberty Ship. Together they travelled throughout the USA and found out that hotels have different rules about wearing suits in their Jacuzzis that the Birkett’s practiced at their own hot tub at home. They had wonderful neighbors, Wiley and Lorna Warren, who always helped them and never called the cops on Berle and Stella for skinny dipping in the backyard. Stella’s last trip was to Wisconsin for her brother Bob’s (Diane) 60th wedding anniversary. Stella was a Cub Scout and Girl Scout leader. She said the boys were easier! She had helped with the ELKS in San Manuel and Rotary Clubs in both San Manuel and Kearny. She served many years as treasurer of the sorority on San Manuel. She said the books were so messed up she was too embarrassed to give them to the next treasurer, so she just kept the job. One time in high school she played a solo of “Black Hawk Waltz.” In her later years she loved to sing “Silent Night”, “Barney Google”, and the world famous “Oh Bowser” songs. Stella was raised a Catholic and remained faithful her entire life. She as a member of the Infant Jesus of Prague

Parish in Kearny, where everyone treated her very well, especially Miriam Avelar and her sister. Stella is preceded in death by her husband, Berle; her parents; brother, Eddie Naidicz; sisters, Francis Beam and Sophie Warn; and her dog, Bowser. Stella is survived by her sons, Gary (Lorraine) and Glenn; her daughter, Mary; and grandchildren, Kelly Birkett, Carrie Gardner, Marc (Jamie) Gardner, Jodie (Shane) Olsen, Laura (Jake) Taylor and James (Jessirae) Birkett. She leaves behind great-grandchildren, Macie Olsen, Daniel Taylor and Baby Birkett (due next June.) She also leaves behind her brother, Robert (Diane) Naidicz of Kenosha, WI; sister, Leona Kon of Joliet, IL; many nieces and nephews; and Gary’s dog, her buddy, Cubbie. Thank you to all who have played a part in Stella’s long life. She would want everyone to have a smile on their face when they think of her and maybe toast her with a beverage of choice (hers was vodka.) If there’s bingo in Heaven, she will be playing. Stella distinguished herself. Special Thanks to Aviant Hospice for their loving care. Services for Stella were held Monday, Nov. 25, 2019 at Infant Jesus of Prague in Kearny, AZ. She was laid to rest at Evergreen Cemetery in Tucson, AZ. The family was assisted with exceptional service by Griffith Mortuary.

Gariboy; and granddaughter, Amber Lee Clawson. Willie is survived by his wife of 20 years, Eleanor Flowers; brother, Virgil Flowers; his four children; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He has many cousins, nieces and nephews that loved him, as well as great friends. He was first married in 1959 -1976. He served in the Army from 1962 through 1965 as Specialist First Class Rifleman. He received a Purple Heart as well as an Honorable Discharge. Willie was a well-loved man in the Tri-Community. Willie was a cowboy. He loved to play country music. He worked as a farmer and an underground miner. He was rough around the edges and he loved his family in his own way. He was a well-respected man. Graveside services were held on Thursday, Nov. 21, at the Arizona Vietnam Memorial Cemetery in Marana. May you forever rest in peace. You will be greatly missed. With love and angels.

HEALTH ISSUESBy Dr. Michael Miles

Special to the Miner

Our body is over 60% water by weight. The brain itself is 75% water. Water is essential for life, as much so, if

not more than the water in our car battery. It is part of every cell. It helps to regulate temperature, moisten tissues and organs, lubricate joints, carry around minerals and oxygen and nutrients, and flush out waste products. Dehydration is a major concern here in the desert. A person can last only about three days without water, though many factors may reduce that time, such as heat, physical activity, age and body type. The consistency of urine is a quick and effective way to monitor hydration. Typically the darker it is the more dehydrated you are. We lose water through breathing, sweating and digestion. Therefore, it is important to rehydrate by drinking fluids and eating foods that contain water. All “drinkable” fluids cannot be considered as healthy water sources. Many fluids such as flavored drinks and coffees, teas, energy drinks often contribute to dehydration rather than hydration. Water “as found in nature” has the same biological advantage over “processed water” as do plants and air “as found in nature,” suggesting a synergistic imperative for optimal human function. By this is meant, the term “water,” as used in everyday language, is not simply the basic molecule of H2O (an oxygen atom with two hydrogen atoms attached to it). “Natural water” connotes a liquid consisting of H2O that has been cycled through evaporation from

the earth’s surface to accumulation in the clouds which then rains back to the earth where it runs through streams to rivers to aquifers collecting a multitude of minerals that all work to keep the complexities of the human body functioning. This harmonious synergism found in water and plants and air, that was once established on this planet for optimal human function, has been thrown askew by the very byproducts of recent human advancement, most notably the industrial revolution. Along with the “natural” minerals collected on water’s journey to our bodies there are a multitude of impurities with varying levels of toxicity. Fortunately for us, the human body has thus far shown enough resilience to adjust adequately to these relatively

‘Tis the season for parents to race from store to store in search of the hottest toy, gadget or stuffed animal for their young child. This year, make the gift-giving experience easier. Check out First Things First’s interactive guide to free or inexpensive gifts for babies, toddlers and preschoolers that promote learning and language development at firstthingsfirst.org/giftguide/. First Things First is a voter-created, statewide organization that funds early learning, family support and children preventive health services to help kids be successful once they enter kindergarten. Keep in mind, quality time with adults is the best gift an infant, toddler or preschooler can receive, and books are one of the best, most long-lasting gifts for all ages. Daily reading helps young kids, even babies, develop language skills and increase vocabulary. This is how to create good readers in the future. Other good choices for different age groups include: For babies under 1 year old, focus on toys that stimulate curiosity. Babies are fascinated by their surroundings, especially faces and bright colors. They enjoy playing hide-and-seek with different objects. Look for things such as:• Board books• Safe, chewable toys• Toys with mirrors

For toddlers between 1 and 3 years old, look for toys that encourage imagination and problem-solving such as:• Pretend versions of everyday objects• Balls to roll or catch• Building toys, including fill and dump varieties.• Matching and sorting toys• Large crayons or markers with plain paper• Simple puzzles For preschoolers, which covers ages 3 to 5, look for toys that help them relate to each other and the world around them including:• Dress-up clothes• Simple board games• Counting and letter games• Sports equipment suitable to their size• Musical instruments• Art supplies such as play dough, safety scissors, glue, etc. Above all, keep in mind that quality time with you — playing, talking or reading — is the best gift you can give this holiday season or anytime.About First Things First – First Things First is a voter-created, statewide organization that funds early learning, family support and children preventive health services to help kids be successful once they enter kindergarten. Decisions about how those funds are spent are made by local councils staffed by community volunteers. To learn more, visit FirstThingsFirst.org.

First Things First offers ideas for best gifts for

kids under age five

Board books are easy for a young baby to hold and turn and are durable enough to take a beating (or a chewing). Pick books with high contrast (black and white) or bright, simple colors. Start reading with your baby from day one. Stimulating for little minds, puzzles are great practice for more complicated challenges kids will face later on, and simple board games are fun ways to spend time together.

First Things First recently launched a new resource page designed to get parents reading and talking with their child at an early age. FTF’s Language and Early Literacy Development page provides ways families can help build early language and literacy skills. These include how to read with your baby and toddler, how reading helps develop life skills and videos that show the importance of back-and-forth conversations with babies. Many parents might think that literacy starts in school. But early literacy starts way before a child reaches a classroom. It begins before babies can talk and continues as they become toddlers and preschoolers. In fact, gaps in children’s vocabulary start to appear as early as 18 months. By the time children are 3 and 4 years old, their vocabulary, attention and general knowledge are predictors of third and fourth grade reading comprehension. According to the 2018 AzMERIT standardized test results, less than half (44%) of Arizona’s third graders passed the English Language Arts test. The reality that third grade reading ability is one of the best predictors of high school graduation is something that elementary school principals see on a daily basis with

their students. “Parents are their child’s first teacher,” said Lisa Raymond, Principal at Mary C. O’Brien Elementary in Casa Grande. “Young children who have listened to stories read or told by their parents start off school with an advantage. Enjoy reading with your child, cherish the time spent reading, and know you are making a difference in your child’s future!” That’s why language and early literacy development starting from the very beginning is important. Babies are listening in utero, and once they’re born, they’re communicating through eye contact, facial expressions, crying, smiles and touch. When adults respond with words, conversation and attention, it helps promote healthy development and learning. For babies, a quality conversation starts with talking to your baby during every day moments, such as meal time, baths, getting dressed and diaper changes to name just a few. Those opportunities grow as the child grows. Reading, talking, singing and playing with young children are some of the easiest ways that families can use everyday moments to encourage literacy and language development.

(StatePoint) Parents spend nearly the same amount of time with devices as they do with their kids, according to new research from The Genius of Play, a nonprofit initiative dedicated to raising awareness of play’s vital role in child development. The results of the OnePoll survey of 2,000 parents of school-aged children ages 5-18 suggest that families should be finding more screen-free ways to spend time together. Half of the survey’s respondents have been asked by their child to put their phone away, and 79 percent believe that their relationship with their children would benefit if everyone spent less time on devices. “Screens and tech can make up some of your playtime, but parents should be mindful of creating balance,” says Ken Seiter, EVP, marketing communications at The Toy Association, the organization that spearheads The Genius of Play. “A wide variety of toys and games will help create rich childhood memories, lead to optimal physical, cognitive and social-emotional development, and nurture critical skills like creativity and out-of-the-box thinking.”

Parents are aware that excessive screen time is a problem. Seventy-four percent worry that their child spends too much time staring at a screen and the majority limit their kids’ screen time to about two hours per day. However, when it comes to their own use of devices, setting a limit is easier said than done. Survey results revealed:• Sixty-two percent of parents admitted to spending too much time on their cell phone while with their kids.• Sixty-nine percent feel “addicted” to their phone.• Parents spend almost as much one-on-one time with devices as with their kids. They are spending an average of two hours and 17 minutes of personal time on their phone per day, compared to two hours and 41 minutes of quality, screen-free time with their children. The survey also found that while parents worry about the amount of screen time kids are getting, technology is now an integral parenting tool.• The majority (83 percent) agree that screens and technology are necessary when raising a child in this day

and age.• Parents use screen time to keep their child occupied (58 percent), as a reward (53 percent) and to help their child calm down when they’re upset (52 percent). In addition, taking screen time away is used as a consequence (63 percent). “Parents often complain that it’s hard to get kids to put down devices, but they can set a positive example by swapping some of their own screen time for other types of play,” says Seiter. Experts at The Genius of Play recommend setting aside dedicated periods of the day for arts and crafts, word games, role play, board games, sports, puzzles, charades and other screen-free activities to maximize quality time for families, which will benefit both kids and adults. For inspiration and play ideas, visit TheGeniusofPlay.org or follow @GeniusofPlay on Facebook and Instagram. Omnipresent digital devices are a fact of modern life. However, with commitment and creativity, families can spend a greater portion of their free time without screens.

Parents as guilty as kids when it comes to too much screen time

recent imbalances seen in the essential resources for life. This being said, we can do our best to recognize the essentiality of water and make choices about what we put into our bodies and how we preserve this essential element for our descendants. Water covers our planet, of which less than 3% is drinkable. The optimal

source of drinkable water would be spring water from a source near to one’s primary habitat. Otherwise, spring water in general is a balanced source. Then one might consider mineral waters intended to compensate for other imbalances in our life

resources. Distilled water has the advantage of being reduced to simple H2O, thus eliminating contaminants. However, it does also eliminate the essential minerals which then must be attained from food or “off the shelf” products at a market. We tend to take water for

granted. Water may soon become more valuable than gold as the environmental influences of modern times dramatically reduce the availability of drinkable sources.Dr. Michael Miles’ Clinic is located at 15601 N. Oracle Rd. in Catalina behind Golf Cars of

piano. Not only is Russell an accomplished collaborative pianist, but he has performed with the Tucson Symphony Orchestra and American Wind Symphony, composes original works, and made his Carnegie Hall debut in 2016. I’m pleased to introduce his upcoming concert at the Oracle Center for the Arts on Dec. 7, 3 pm. This open community event is by free will donation as Mr. Ronnebaum requested with the intention of eliminating any financial barriers that would get in the way of sharing this inspiring music. This concert, Winter Scenes will include all of the songs on his album so named. Musical pieces include timeless works such as O Holy Night, Carol of the Bells featuring four hands piano with Dr. Stephen Cook, Coventry Carol, The First Noel, and original compositions; Wintermezzo, Romance, and Final Suite. A Kansas native, Russell Ronnebaum moved to Arizona after earning a Bachelor of Music degree in piano performance from the University of Kansas. Under the guidance of Dr. Paula Fan, he earned his Masters Degree in collaborative piano from the University of

Arizona. For the 2019-20 season, Russell was named the newly appointed Music Director and Composer in Residence of the Rogue Theatre in Tucson, AZ. He also serves as the assistant director of music at St. Mark the Evangelist Catholic Church in Oro Valley. Russell has served as the staff accompanist for the Tucson Masterworks Chorale since 2015. For the spring 2017 Masterworks Chorale series, Mr. Ronnebaum performed as soloist for Beethoven’s 2nd Piano Concerto, Op. 19. Past performance and compositional engagements include Artifact Dance Project, The Rogue Theatre, and the University of Arizona. His music has been played on 90.5 FM Arizona Public Media, and 91.3 KXCI ‘Locals Only’ program. Recent composition commissions and premieres include music for voice, choir, piano, string orchestra, and live theatre. Recordings, videos, sheet music, and upcoming concert dates can be found at: www.RRonnebaum.com. Please, welcome, Russell Ronnebaum to Oracle on Dec. 7, 3 p.m. at Oracle Center for the Arts, 700 E.
