Naomi Cook Honea and Huey Honea Sr. welcomed their new son, Leo Earl Honea to this earth on June 18, 1934. Leo was born at home on their farm just outside of Hazelhurst, Mississippi and passed away on Oct. 7, 2020 at home in San Manuel while taking a nap. He was the next to the oldest of four children in the family, 3 boys and one girl. In 1945, Leo and his family moved from Mississippi to Eloy, AZ where he finished school and graduated Santa Cruz Valley High School in 1952. Shortly there-after he joined the US Army, was stationed in Europe and was able to visit many places while being stationed in Germany. He was Honorably Discharged in 1959.

Leo Honea When Leo returned home from the Army, he married Virginia (Sissy) Kilman and worked in California but ultimately came back to Arizona and went to work building Lumus Cotton Gins. Sometimes these jobs were close to home but sometimes not, he always talked about working in Mexico putting gins together. He enjoyed the hospitality of the people there, the food and his semi ability to speak their language! It was during this time, that he and Sissy became proud parents of two children, Dede and Kyle. In 1971 they moved to Camp Verde and Leo started his real career working in the “Log Woods”! This would be the defining part of his life…he started as a “sawyer” but ended up working all jobs including, managing sawyers and loppers, managing a very large chipping operation in Arizona, cutting thousands of cord wood on the Tejon Ranch in California and ultimately ended up as a partner in one of if not the best tree falling companies in the Southwest. Over these years, Leo made many, many friends that he cherished for the rest of his life. He was a true outdoorsman, living in the woods during the week, managing crews of men that were truly just that “MEN”. Leo could tell you if your saw was dull, how long a tree

took to grow, which way it was going to fall, what the weather was going to do to production and how to properly cook “Camp Meat” for dinner. He also learned how to fry the absolute best Catfish in town! It was during this time that he caught up with an old friend, Grace Halcomb from high school in Eloy and they married in January of 1993. They spent the next 27 years living in San Manuel where he commuted to work in the woods until retirement and permanently moved to the desert. He spent the next 15 years playing golf daily (he called it working) with friends and cutting down every tree that was unwanted within a 30-mile radius. Several of these times, we were just barely lucky enough to get traffic on the street to stop because there was a “Pine Tree” fixing to hit the ground!! Leo was preceded in death by his parents, older brother Huey Honea Jr., and younger brother Devon Kirk Honea. He is survived by his wife Grace M. Honea, sister Lula Lafayette Diard, daughter Danielle (Dede) Marie (Walter) Robinson, Dede’s sons Ryan and Curtis, his son Kyle (Shannon) Honea, Kyle’s daughters Jastine and Tristine, son Tad (Cathy) Halcomb, daughters Brenna and Taylor and son Cole. There are also many great grandkids that Leo loved being around!!! IF THERE ARE ANY TREES IN HEAVEN, I’M SURE HIS “ORANGE” SAW IS SHARP, FULL OF GAS AND OIL AND HE’S BUGGING “GOD” TO TURN HIM LOOSE!! We’re asking for understanding and forgiveness as we can only have a small family service due to COVID-19. We know there are many people that would love to be there to offer their condolences and we’re so blessed to have so many friends. When the COVID-19 restrictions are lifted, we will invite friends and family to gather at the Elks Lodge for an evening of remembering Leo. Thank you so much for all the calls, food, visits and messages…God Bless

Willy Willis, born to Billy and Tammy Willis on April 4, 1977 In Phoenix Arizona followed by two sisters Mandy and Tanya, passed away on Oct. 7, 2020. Willy found a passion first in bike racing at 8 years old but swiftly moved on to dirt bikes. Soon he found his number one passion in life his sweetheart Joleen. Together they welcomed four wonderful children, Alex, Savannah, Tanner and Dakota. The passion he had for being a father was awe inspiring. The dedication he showed was a guide for all of us to follow, a man to look up to, and a life to strive for: from all the ball games, bull rides, and helping all of his boys become Eagle Scouts. He enjoyed rides in the Can Am, shooting, and working on the yard as a family, all while working hard to obtain his Master’s degree. He truly showed us all where our priorities should be. As a brother, son, grandson, cousin, uncle, and friend the jokes and hard times were always on the tip of his tongue, usually always followed by laughs and maybe sometimes insults. Willy had a serious side when he would give us our “Life Talks”. He always wanted what was best for us all. His guidance, love, and jokes will be missed forever. We love you Willy always and forever. Willy is survived by his wife, Joleen; children, Alex, Savannah, Tanner,

Dakota and Tara; grandmothers, Lydia Willis and Sandy Nelson; parents, Billy and Tammy Willis; parents-in-law, Rusty and Nikki Rawson and Alvin and Marge Reidhead; siblings, Mandy and Stacy Gillaspy, Tanya and Jeremy Reidhead, Bill and Annette Reidhead, Rikki and Dave Galka, Vikki and Aaron McClaskey, Nikki and Kyle Ellett, Karla Dollar, Travis and Kim Rawson and Rhonda Cummings; several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins who were more like siblings to him. Willy is preceded in death by grandparents, Vic and Gail Nelson; grandfather, Bill Willis; uncle, Don Willis; brother-in-law, Clint Dollar; and cousin, Kyle Goodridge. Willy thank you for being the best husband and dad ever. May you rest in peace my love… Funeral service will be held on Saturday, Oct. 17, 2020, at 10 a.m. the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Kearny, AZ with visitation at 9 a.m. and interment following at the Kearny Cemetery. On Sept. 25, 2020, the Town of Mammoth was notified that it had officially received funding from the United States Department of Agriculture – Rural Development (USDA) in the amount of $7,446,789.64 for water system improvements. This award was the result of more than three years of hard work and perseverance by the previous Town Manager, Don Jones, and Mayor Joe Dietz, plus lots of last minute scrambling over the past two months by new Interim Town Manager, John Schempf, to finalize all the paperwork before the end of the federal fiscal year. “We are really excited about it” said Schempf. “It is the largest grant approved for a town as small as Mammoth.” Like many small rural communities, the Town of Mammoth has had to make due with aging infrastructure that presents

constant operating and maintenance challenges. The Town suffers from frequent pipeline breaks/leaks and pumping issues that lead to water outages and high repair costs. With this funding, the Town now has the resources to address the many problems with its water system by replacing/upgrading old equipment and facilities. “I am glad to see that our little Town can finally fix the water system,” said Mayor Dietz. Getting the USDA funding was not easy. Like all federal programs, the Town had to work through a mountain of paperwork and meet several conditions, all of which took several years to complete. One of these conditions was that the water rates in the Town of Mammoth had to be increased in order for the Town to meet the USDA funding requirements. Earlier this year the Town Council approved the

new, higher rates, effective April 1, 2020. And while no one wants to pay more for their water, the residents of Mammoth can rest assured knowing that the money they pay for water is making a big difference for the entire Town. Another condition the Town had to meet was to be designated a Colonia by the USDA. By definition, a Colonia is a community located within 150 miles of the US-Mexico border, which was in existence prior to Oct. 1, 1989, and which generally lacks an adequate system for potable water supplies, sewage systems, and/or decent, safe and sanitary housing and/or adequate roads and drainage. On Sept. 9, 2020, the Pinal County Board of Supervisors passed a resolution declaring the Town of Mammoth a USDA designated Colonia. Based on having high enough water rates that meet the minimum threshold for USDA funding, and by being a designated

Colonia, the USDA awarded the Town of Mammoth a total of $7.4 million dollars to improve its water system. The USDA funding package includes a $6,946,789.64 grant and a $500,000 loan. The loan terms are 1.5% interest for 40 years. “The Town of Mammoth is very grateful for this money to fix the problems with our water system, and would like to sincerely thank the USDA and everyone who helped to make this project a reality, “ said Schempf. “We are excited about getting this project started as fast as possible so that we can begin making a difference for the people of Mammoth.” The Town of Mammoth has begun the process of selecting an engineering firm to begin the design of the water system improvements. The entire project, from engineering through construction, is expected to take about 30 months to complete.

appointment as well. Test results are sent in less than 48 hours, and sooner. Superintendent Jeff Gregorich took the saliva test and received the results within 29 hours. “It was easy and quick,” he said. “I like the COVID-19 saliva test much more than the nasal test. It is

reassuring to get a negative test result. I can say that it gives me and my family a piece of mind. The more we test for COVID-19 and participate in the Governor’s Mask up strategy, the faster we will eliminate COVID-19 in our community. Come and join us this Friday afternoon.”

Madrid finished with eight tackles in the game while Huerta and senior Jason Del Rio totaled five tackles each. Junior Justin Tafoya had three tackles, including a sack. Junior Isaiah Lopez had an interception. “The team had a good season opener with little mistakes,” Ivy said.Up next: San Manuel hosts Ft. Thomas in its home opener this Friday, Oct. 16. LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Get Out the VOTE! Keep Supervisor Rios! We all have the opportunity to make a difference in our communities and our region. While it may be easy to get bogged down by the national politics and the constant barrage of information being shared with us, we must remember that our local elections impact our lives much faster than state and federal elections. Supervisor Pete Rios, is a committed leader to Pinal County District One. The Copper Corridor as a region and Pinal County as a whole, is fortunate to have Pete Rios as our County Supervisor. He understands the challenges of living in our remote, rural communities, and most importantly, he has never forgotten his roots throughout his political career. With other areas of

Pinal County growing at a rapid pace, Supervisor Rios is a constant advocate for our unique needs in Eastern Pinal County. We need representation that will make sure our communities are not left behind as the county grows and many of the resources shift to the more populated areas. As a Mayor I call on him often to seek support or his advocacy for our community and our region. He consistently seeks out opportunities to serve the people of our district and Pinal County. He is helpful in navigating County policies and systems. He also brings a tremendous amount of governing experience that provides important guidance for all of Pinal County. Join me in supporting Supervisor Rios. He provides the

Our VOTES Matter! Keep Supervisor Riosconsistent and balanced leadership, that we need for our region and our County./s/ Mila BesichMayor of Superior

Copper Area News is committed to providing our readers with as much information as possible. We post a daily update on our Facebook page with the total positive COVID-19 Data. This graph shows the daily counts of positive cases for the past week as of press time on Oct. 13, 2020. There are a few points we would like our readers to consider when following this data. 1. Example, Kearny and Winkelman each have small communities in their zip code that are not in the Town’s incorporated boundaries.4. If you live in Gila County, please follow the Gila County Health and Emergency Management, Facebook. They have maintained their data on recoveries and current positive cases. 5. You can
