The mandate of the Laurentian University Alumni Association (LUAA) is to encourage lifelong relationships with graduates of Laurentian by inviting them to participate in on campus and community initiatives/partnerships with a view to promoting the welfare

and advancing the interest, influence and usefulness of the University as the institution continues to evolve into the North’s premiere educational facility.

It took 40 years to see 30,000 Laurentian University students graduate, and just 10 more to reach 50,000.

The Laurentian University Alumni Association is proud of this accomplishment and looks forward to even greater milestones.

Le mandat de l’Association des anciens de l’Université Laurentienne (AAUL) est de favoriser des liens durables avec les diplômés de la Laurentienne, grâce à leur participation

aux partenariats et initiatives déployés tant sur le campus qu’au sein de la collectivité, et de promouvoir le bien-être de l’Université, de même que son intérêt, son influence et sa

pertinence, à mesure qu’elle évolue pour devenir l’établissement d’enseignement supérieur le plus en vue dans le Nord.

Il a fallu 40 ans pour franchir la barre des 30 000 diplômés, mais 10 ans seulement pour atteindre 50 000.

L’AAUL est fière de cet exploit et se réjouit à la perspective de franchir des étapes encore plus ambitieuses.

The Mace is a symbol of authority and guidance. It is shouldered by the Macebearer who, clothed in a specially designed gown, leads the procession of graduands, faculty, members of the Board of Governors, special guests, the Chancellor, and the President and Vice-Chancellor, into the auditorium to participate in the Convocation ceremony. When the entire procession has entered, the Mace is placed on a designated pedestal before the Chancellor, at the front of the stage. It remains there until the closure of the Convocation ceremony, at which time it is borne again by the Macebearer who leads the Convocation procession out of the auditorium.

Laurentian’s Mace was designed by Dora de Pedery-Hunt. It was crafted from Sudbury metals – copper and nickel – and adorned with golden studs, representing strength and power. The University’s crest is engraved at the tip of the shaft. This gift from The Imperial Order Daughters of the Empire (IODE), Elizabeth Fry Chapter, was presented to the University at their annual dinner on May 17, 1966.

La Masse est un symbole d’autorité et de gouverne. Elle est portée par le massier qui, revêtu d’une toge spécialement conçue, mène à l’intérieur de l’auditorium le cortège formé des diplômés, du corps professoral, des membres du Conseil des gouverneurs, des invités spéciaux, du chancelier et du recteur et vice-chancelier pour participer à la cérémonie de la collation des grades. Lorsque le cortège entier a fait son entrée, la Masse est déposée à l’avant de la scène, devant le chancelier, sur un socle destiné à cet effet. Elle y demeure jusqu’à la fin de la cérémonie, moment auquel le massier la reprend pour conduire le cortège à l’extérieur de l’auditorium.

La Masse de l’Université Laurentienne est l’oeuvre de Dora de Pedery-Hunt. Elle a été confectionnée à partir de métaux trouvés dans la région de Sudbury – le cuivre et le nickel – et ornée de cloutages dorés qui représentent la force et le pouvoir. L’écusson de l’Université est gravé au bout du manche de la Masse. Ce cadeau de l’Ordre impérial des filles de l’Empire, section Elizabeth Fry, a été présenté à l’Université lors du banquet annuel de l’Ordre tenu le 17 mai 1966.

Chancellor of Laurentian University

Steve Paikin is the host of TVO’s flagship current affairs program, The Agenda with Steve Paikin, the gold standard for in depth of analysis and thoughtful debate in Canadian media. In more than 35 years in the business, Steve has built a sterling reputation as an eminently fair journalist, who has moderated federal and Ontario election debates. Earlier in his career, Steve worked at CBC News as an anchor and correspondent, a reporter for the Hamilton Spectator and CHFI radio, as well as radio and television stations in Boston. Steve has authored seven books including his latest, Bill Davis: Nation Builder, and Not So Bland After All, has produced several feature-length documentaries, and reported from two different war zones. In October 2013, Steve became an educational ambassador and was appointed Chancellor of Laurentian University in Sudbury. He was re-appointed in 2018. He is also a distinguished visiting professor at Ryerson University in Toronto.  Steve has honorary degrees from Laurentian, Victoria University at the University of Toronto, McMaster University in Hamilton, and York University. He also has honorary diplomas from Humber, Centennial, and Mohawk Colleges. In December of 2013, Steve was made an Officer of the Order of Canada for his contributions as a journalist who engages, informs and educates viewers on a broad range of public policy issues, and was invested into the Order of Ontario in 2014.Steve was born in Hamilton, Ontario and lives in Toronto.

Chancellor of Laurentian UniversityThe Chancellor of the University is a volunteer appointed by the Board of Governors. The Chancellor is the titular and ceremonial head of the University and assists the University in its advocacy, advancement activities, and national recognition efforts. Without limiting the generality of the foregoing, the Chancellor of Laurentian University will:

• Act as an ambassador for the University;• Preside over Convocation and confer degrees;• Serve as a member of the Board of Governors;• Participate in, or preside over, ceremonial or other important events on campus;• Represent the University in an official capacity at external functions from time to time;• Perform a strong leadership role on behalf of the University;• Engage in profile-raising activities;• Assist in advancement activities (friend-raising and fund-raising);• Advocate directly, or through a network of connections, for the post-secondary system,

and for Laurentian University in particular;• Provide advice to the President and Vice-Chancellor.

Convocation is an impressive ceremony, steeped in dignity and decorum, which is conducted according to long-standing traditions. The colourful academic regalia – caps, gowns, and hoods – worn by teaching and administrative staff are a legacy from medieval universities such as Paris, Bologna, Oxford, and Cambridge. They indicate the university from which its bearer graduated and the highest degree awarded to that person. Most of the distinctive characteristics appear in the hood. Originally a practical element of dress, the hood has evolved into a separate and purely ornamental article, draped over the shoulder and down the back. The hoods worn by graduands are either bordered or lined with colours that indicate the degree to be conferred.

The undergraduate academic hoods are crafted in Laurentian University’s blue and gold, with a colour border corresponding to the program of study:

Academic Hoods

La vie universitaire est ponctuée de rites dont celui de la collation des grades. Celle-ci est une cérémonie impressionnante, empreinte de dignité et de décorum, qui se déroule selon des traditions anciennes. Les atours académiques colorés – toques, toges et épitoges – que revêtent les membres des corps professoral et administratif sont un héritage de l’époque médiévale, plus précisément d’universités telles que celles de Paris, de Bologne, d’Oxford et de Cambridge. Ces vêtements sont aux couleurs de l’université fréquentée par ces personnes ainsi qu’à celles du grade le plus élevé qui leur a été conféré. Les caractéristiques les plus particulières se trouvent sur l’épitoge. À l’origine un élément pratique de la tenue vestimentaire, l’épitoge est devenue un article séparé, purement ornemental, drapé autour des épaules, qui pend dans le dos. Les épitoges portées par les diplômés ont soit une bordure soit une doublure de couleur qui indique le grade qui leur est conféré.

Les épitoges des diplômés du 1er cycle sont confectionnées dans des tissus bleu et or – les couleurs de la Laurentienne – et ornées d’une bordure de couleur qui correspond au programme d’études :
