but everything else in the world is changing rapidly.
New trends, especially in design and marketing, are
reshaping the business terrain. Berge Abajian, creator of
Bergio, was one to spot these emerging trends and his
foresight has served his fast-rising company well.
Bergio began his fashion line in 1995, and in 2002
launched Bergio Bridal Collectionone of the top five
best-selling bridal jewelry lines in the industry.
Today, Bergio is known for elegant designs manufactured
in Italy and executed with masterful craftsmanship.
European sensibility, glamorous yet timeless, is instilled
into every piece. Colored stones, both precious and semi-
precious, continue to animate the line.
Thanks to substantial advertising in both trade and
consumer magazines, an increasingly strong Internet
presence, and the force of Abajians own warm,
enthusiastic and colorful personality, the Bergio name
is quickly becoming one of the few jewelry lines with
instant name recognition. Whats in a name? At Bergio, everything you want.

Treating people well, making
them happy, perhaps fulfi lling
their fondest hopesthese are
some of the goals we all have
at this time of year.
These are year-round goals, as
well, for the team here at LaViano
Jewelers. Weve been in business
for nearly 60 years, and our focus
is on the next 60. We take the
long view, and that means our top
concern is always the best interests of our customers.
Consider, for example, the one-of-a-kind pieces we design right in our Westwood
store. Because we are saving quite a bit on the cost by creating the pieces ourselves,
these items represent an exceptional value. More important, our customers love them
because the pieces are tailored exactly to individual tastes. We will make a custom
piece on a 100-percent approval basis, no deposit required. Our belief is that we
shouldnt get paid until the customer is happy.
We also cater to customers by providing a wonderful selection in a wide range
of price points. You can certainly buy sumptuous jewelry here, such as pieces with
the colorful golds and gemstones shown in the feature that begins on page 69. But
we also carry a wide selection of lower-priced merchandise. We have many
gift items that are perfect for bar mitzvahs, Sweet 16s, graduations and business
occasions. And in ladies jewelry, some of our most popular items now are pearls
and everyday pieces for layering, such as bead necklaces of garnet and other
semiprecious stones (see page 28). These give you a great looksure to win
compliments!for not a lot of money.
Whether youre looking to mark one of lifes major milestones or buy a simple
gift, youll enjoy the same fi rst-rate and caring service we provide to all who enter our
store. Our staff is not commissioned, so they have no incentive to treat one customer
differently from another. Our culture promotes giving the same excellent degree of
service to everyone.
Were also aiming to please you with the lineup of this issue of LAVIANO maga-
zine. Here youll fi nd not only whats new in exquisite jewelry, but a bit of insight into
what makes it so desirable. We also provide you with ideas for grand getaways, far
and near; a vicarious ride in the stunning new Tesla electric roadster and much more.
At this holiday time, please allow all of us at LaViano Jewelers to wish you and
your family a peaceful and joyous season of togetherness. In good economic times
and bad, our clients have stood by our establishmentand we will always do the
same for you.
We look forward to seeing you soon.

What makes the diamonds in
Chopards Happy collections so joy-
ful? The story is that its because these
diamonds are freenot fixed and sta-
tionary, but floating between two transparent
sapphire crystals. They (and their wearers) are
also happy because Chopards world-class watches
are wonderfully versatile, going from day to night with ease. Geneva-
based Chopard, one of the last privately held major watch and jewelry
companies, will be celebrating its 150th anniversary in 2010. Chopard
watches are found only at the best jewelry establishmentssuch as
LaViano Jewelers, of course.

Winking at womens fashionYou cant see it in the picture here, but the image on the cover
of Avedon Fashion 19442000 is printed holographically, so
the model literally appears to wink at you as you walk by.
This irresistible come-on is just a hint of the visual pleasures
within. The lush new book chronicles the work of Richard
Avedon, the most infl uential fashion photographer of all time.
Beginning in the late 1940s, Avedon bucked the convention
of stiff, motionless poses by encouraging his models to move
and express themselves. He also forged such intense
connections with his subjects that he often left photo shoots
embarrassed by the personal details they revealed to him.
From Audrey Hepburn to Veruschka to Kate Moss, the book
covers all of Avedons most iconic fashion models and images.

DAUM for the HolidaysART IS THE ULTIMATE LUXURYso goes the slogan of Daum, the
French company that has been at the forefront of artistry in glasswork for
130 years. True to its beliefs, the company has worked with the greatest
contemporary artists over the years, including Salvador Dali, Paloma
Picasso and many more. Daum specializes in collections, in categories
such as Paradise, Botanic and Black and White. Shown here: Aprs
LAmour by artist Sylvie Mangaud Lasseigne, who created it for the
companys Love collection. The artist made just 375 of these 26-inch-
long, amber-green pieces, one of which can be seen at LaVianos
Englewood store. For more information on Daum and other fi ne
collections, visit www.lavianojewelers.com.
The Wide World of PEARLSPearls are staples in a
womans jewelry ward-
robe. But pearls are also
infi nitely variableand at
LaViano Jewelers, you can
select exactly the shape, color and style you like. Choose from
fi nished strands, or design your own adornment. In the mood
for a fun, informal look? Consider a multi-layered choker of
pink-toned, baroque (irregular) or coin (disc-shaped) pearls. In
addition to taking your pick of different pearl shapes (tear-drop
and, of course, round are also available), you can mix pearls in
different hues (goldens, browns, creams, grays) and sizes (an
8-millimeter strand worn with a 7-millimeter strand, or different-
sized pearls on the same chain). Stop by a LaViano store
to browse our stunning selection.
Victorinox Swiss
Army watches are
as reliable and

famous knives from
which they take their
name. Extremely well
engineered and nearly
indestructible, they are
also an excellent value.
Shown here: a model from

THE A-to-Z LISTLaViano offers more than 60 brands of jewelry, watches and giftware at our Englewood and Westwood locationsincluding all of the brands listed here.
Penny Preville
CARTIER in the U.S.A.SO ICONIC IS THE CARTIER brand that it seems timeless. Yet it was a
mere century ago that the brand arrived in the U.S., fi nding a home
in a brownstone on Fifth Ave. (purchased, fi ttingly, for $100 and a
pearl necklace). Cartiers impossibly glamorous past is intertwined
with Americas, from the fi rst Tank watch prototype given to Gen.
John Pershing in the fi rst World War, through adorning movie stars
from Rudolph Valentino to Marilyn Monroe, to its identifi cation
with style icons like Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. To celebrate a
very special person in your life (or yourself!), consider a Cartier
watch such as the Ballon Bleu, available at LaViano Jewelers.
Quick getaways: into the woodsThe holiday season is a period when you could most use a vacationbut can least spare the time. Consider, then, a relaxing mini-escape to a luxuri-ous resort thats far from the crowds, yet still within a few hours drive.
Mohonk Mountain House, a sprawl-ing Victorian castle in New Paltz, N.Y., was termed a perfect picture of quiet beauty by The New York Times in 1874and thats still an apt description. Celebrating the resorts 140th anniversary this year, its spa is offering specials on natural treatments inspired by its lakeside location in the Shawangunk mountains. Example: the Indigo Herbal Poultice Massage, with local aromatic wild herbs and spices to ease tension and loosen sore muscles. Visit www.mohonk.com.
The Lodge at Woodloch in Hawley,
Pa.about two hours from Bergen Countyis a luxury destination spa that boasts organic cuisine at the Tree restaurant, an Aqua Garden (therapeutic soaking pools, heated hydro-massage WaterWalls) and a whole host of nature-inspired treatments. To calm you down this season: the Lavender Garden Dream, including earthy minerals and laven-der wrap as well as a basalt stone back massage. Visit www.thelodgeatwoodloch.com.
A multi-faceted historyEver since the discovery of jewels and precious metals, humans have had a passion for wearing them. Jewels in the Louvre, a new book from the Flammarion imprint of Rizzoli, explores the exquisite jewelry to be found in that august museum, as well as jewelrys representa-tion in its collection of sculptures and paintingsfrom Egyptian necklaces of the second millennium B.C. to the diadem Josephine wore to Napoleons coronation.

26 / HOL I DAY 2 0 0 9
What would you suggest for a couple that is celebrating
a milestone wedding anniversary?
Its not unusual these days for people to select an eternity, or
anniversary, ring where diamonds are set all around the finger. Five-
stone rings are also popular. Diamonds are most often chosen, but in
some instances, rings incorporate rubies, emeralds or sapphires.
Fancy yellow diamonds are beautiful, very much in vogue, and
relatively affordable. Those in the middle
quality rangesfancy yellow, fancy
intenseare luxurious and often can
be bought for less than a com-
parably sized white diamond,
whereas the more exotic
diamonds, the pinks and
blues, are often times
unapproachable due to rarity
and cost.
Any ideas for gift-giving to
a business associate?
Go for something that is
not too personal an item, par-
ticularly if the business associate is
from a country whose culture youre unfamiliar with.
Anything worn around the neck or on the
finger is quite personal. A watch, though, is appro-
priate as a means of recognizing high achievement.
You might consider a home accessory, such as
a piece from the Faberg collection or crystal art
made by Daum, or a crystal item that can be etched.
For a man, I would avoid things like key chains and belt buckles.
Cufflinks might be appropriate, depending on how well you know the
person. Otherwise, I would go to something like a nice Mont Blanc or
other writing instrument, or perhaps a Baccarat figure representing a
personal interest such as golf.
What should a woman consider when buying a
watch for her husband?
The men in our clientele tend to have only one jewelry indulgence,
and that is watches. Consider what he already has in his collection, and
The Art ofTHE JEWELER
remember that men accessorize their wardrobes for purpose
and function. If hes going to the Hamptons for the weekend
and will be by the water, hell wear his Patek Philippe
Nautilus. If hes going down to Hilton Head to play golf for a
few days with the guys, hell want to wear a sports watch. If
hes attending a black-tie wedding reception at The Pierre,
hell wear his platinum watch.
What are some ideas for a gift for a wife?
The rule I hear from women is, If my husband comes in, have him
pick something I can wear. Ladies prefer jewelry they can derive pleas-
ure from on a daily basis, versus pieces that
warrant a formal event. I might recommend
a beautiful three-stone ring for the right
hand, diamond studs, diamond hoop ear-
rings or a classic yet striking bracelet.
I would always urge a person to con-
sider jewelry that is more classic in nature,
more disciplined in design. I have no prob-
lem with fashion, or costume, jewelry, but
when you go past a certain threshold of
cost I believe you should have an eye to
longevity.
Besides providing ideas, how does
LaViano help customers who are
making a big gift decision?
We are hugely about service and
follow-through. If some consideration
is needed after a sale is made, such as warranty service, we are
there. You build customer loyalty through performance, and accessibil-
ity. Companies that switch to voice mail are making a huge mistake
distancing themselves from their clients.
Honesty and quality: Thats our image,
and it wasnt acquired easily. We depend
on generational clients. We have families
where weve served the grandparents,
then the parents, and now the kids are
coming in to buy engagement rings.
I often say to these young buyers,
I cant give you a $30,000 stone for
$15,000, but I can give you a $15,000
stone that will take her breath away.
You educate the client about whats
important in a diamond and what isnt and
where you can make concessions without
impact to the beauty of the ring. Whats the
best diamond I can give this client thats
going to look greatthe best for his bud-
get? Thats what we do. Its not that com-
plicated. We pride ourselves on having the
discipline to always put our clients
interest foremost in every situation.

I design clothes for the ultra-feminine,
audacious, curious and adventurous woman,
says Catherine Malandrino. She could be
describing herself. Raised in France,
Maladrino moved to the U.S. and made
her career stateside. Her inspirations
include the Wild West, the exoticism
of Istanbul, the craftsmanship of
the Amish, the light of Paris, the
urban rhythm of New York.
Thats quite a stylistic melting
pot, and it shows in her designs.
Consider this jacket. Its heritage is
the American motorcycle jacket,
but Malandrino interprets the
form in an utterly feminine way.
The embossed motif, a bird
taking fl ight, gives the piece
an Asian feel.

You can never tell what may have inspired a piece by
jewelry designer Frederic Sagehis worldwide travels,
perhaps, or his background in textile design, or even
the important women in his life.
What you will know, instantly, is that this is
no ordinary piece of work. Just eight years after
founding his jewelry design firm, Sage has already
won five Spectrum awards from the American Gem
Trade Association. Most recently, he took 2009 Best
of Show for his Enchanted Stallion brooch, which fea-
tured 158.26 carats of hand-carved turquoise and nearly
four carats worth of diamonds.
As one would expect, Sage distributes his
work exclusively through fine jewelers and galler-
ies. LAVIANO recently sat down with Sage to ask
about the secrets behind his sparkling creations.

Did you always dream of becoming a
jewelry designer?
Actually, no. I majored in marketing in college,
and I intended to become an architect someday.
But after I graduated, a home furnishings com-
pany in North Carolina hired me. I knew nothing
about textiles, but since they were trying to
open some new markets in Europe and South
America and I spoke seven languages, I seemed
to be a good fi t.
I spent the next eight years in Europe.
I traveled all over the continent, spending a
month or two at a time in Milan, Barcelona,
Paris, everywhere. Eventually I started designing
and coloring the textiles myself.
How did you make the move from textiles?
I have some family and friends in the gem busi-
ness. When I returned to the States, I took what
I thought was a temp job with my father. I just
wanted to see what the business was like. I
picked it up quickly, having been exposed
to it as a child. Soon I was working with the
stones, designing pieces that were kind of
off the wall, different, unique. I didnt know
what I was doing, but customers bought them!
How has your textiles experience
infl uenced your work?
I see things differently than most people in
the business. In textiles, you try to coordinate

a look, to put
a fl owered sofa
with striped curtains.
You dont always want everything to
match perfectly.
Its the same with jewelry
for me. Im not all about matching
the pendant to the earrings to the
bracelet. Women often want my
pieces to work well with the jewelry
they already own. They arent going
to buy everything from me!
I also think a lot about the way
jewelry feelshow smooth is it,
how well it fi ts. Women often tell
me that my rings fi t really well.
That means a lot to me.
Most people approach
textiles in the same way. If
you see something you like,
you touch the fabric, you see
how it feels, you decide if
its going to be comfortable.
Only then do you start think-
ing about price.
Do textiles ever inspire
your designs?
Sure, sometimes. The crew-
elwork on the fabrics that
were common in England at
the time of James I
inspired my Jaco-
bean collection.
But really, all sorts of
places and objects inspire me.
The Spanish town of the same name
inspired my Granada collection about
four years ago. You can see its heavy
Moorish infl uences refl ected in my
paisleys and arabesques.
The shape of a bats wing led
to my Paloma pieces. (Yes, I know
paloma means dove in Spanish,
but who would want to wear a bat
wing?) And once, a hall light in an
offi ce building caught my eye and I
used it as the basis for a pendant.
Other times I design around
a particular gem: I see it and
know immediately that it will
become a beautiful ring
or pendant or set
of earrings.
Do you have any favorite gems?
I love colored gems. Peridot is
my favorite, but I like all sunshiny,
happy colorsyellows, oranges,
greens. Beautiful gems are
delicious. Theyre mouthwatering.
When Im around them, Im like a
kid in a candy store. I have stashes
of gems that I havent made into
anything yet.
And this may sound odd,
coming from a jewelry designer,
but I like semiprecious stones more
than precious ones. I can do so
much more with them. They can
be really huge without becoming so
expensive that no one can buy and
enjoy them.
What kind of woman buys your
pieces? Whom do you have in
mind when youre designing?
I always ask myself, Would my
wife want to wear this? Would
my mother want to? Many of
my customers are independent
professional women who purchase
the pieces for themselves. Others
are more mature and have already
established themselves; they have
their diamonds and pearls and
theyre looking for something new
and different and maybe a little
unconventional.
What do you like most about
what you do?
I love to create. I get really excited
when a new piece is ready. Some-
times I love a piece so much that I
dont want to sell it!
I also enjoy recutting gems;
thats something I do a lot. Its like
making fi ne clothing. A dress might
look nice on a hanger, but it usually
takes careful tailoring to transform
it into a truly stunning piece. The
same is true for gems.
Plus, I just love being around
jewelry. I dont wear muchI make
cuffl inks for myself occasionally
but my wife has a lot!
Whats next for your
company?
Id love to do a bridal line,
a mens line, and accesso-
ries that complement the
jewelry. My wife tells me I
should design handbags. It
all sounds good to me!

On screen and off, Grace Kelly
projected a cool confi dence.

Imagine Angelina Jolie wearing the same dress three times
including to the Academy Awards. Or Anne Hathaway glid-
ing down the red carpet without conferring with Rachel Zoe.
Today, its unthinkable. But when Grace Kelly accepted the
1954 Best Actress Oscar for her role in The Country Girl, she
grabbed a favorite ensemblean ice blue satin dress and
matching coatstraight from her closet. It wasnt on loan. No
stylist picked it out. She didnt borrow any jewels. And not only
had she worn the outfit (fashioned by legendary Paramount
costume designer Edith Head) to the premiere of the film, but
she also had posed in it for
a Life magazine cover.
The fact is that in
Hollywoods Golden Age,
actresses became style
icons by displaying their
natural flair for fashion. It
was the wrap of a scarf, the
toss of a lustrous mane, a
beguiling carriage that set
the stars apart from the
starlets, and whether casu-
al in Capri pants or stunning
in a strapless gown, Grace
Kelly quickly ascended to
supernova status.
Her cool confi dence,
marked by a fondness for
sedate shirtwaist dresses,
low heels and prim gloves,
stood in stark contrast to
the come-on curves of fel-
low screen sirens such as
Elizabeth Taylor, Brigitte
Bardot and Marilyn Mon-
roe. Yet from behind her
veiled hats and oversize sunglasses, she exuded an under-
current of smoldering sensuality. You can feel the heat in her
portrayal of Francie Stevens, the steely sophisticate who
makes cat burglar John Robie (Cary Grant) melt in Alfred
Hitchocks To Catch a Thief. And as Lisa Fremont, the girl who
would not wear a dress twice, in Hitchcocks Rear Window, she
models a frothy negligee like nobodys business, the paragon of
assertiveand absolutely irresistibleelegance.
Even hiding a baby bump became a fashion statement
when Princess Grace of Monaco did it. Her method? Strategi-
cally toting a boxy oversize
Herms bag, known ever
since as the Kelly bag.
With her sentimental
attachment to clothing and
accessories, she contin-
ued to clutch the Kelly (she
owned manyin black,
honey, brown, red and green)
long after little Caroline was
born. Fads could come and
go, but Grace stayed true to
the unpretentious classics
she adored. Its no wonder
that nearly 30 years after her
untimely death, the regal yet
down-to-earth actress-turned-
princess is still celebrated for
her eternal style. See Faith
Hill done up as Grace on the
June cover of Redbook. Or
January Jones channeling
her wholesome chic on Mad
Men. Or yourself, next time
you pair a cashmere sweater
with pearls.

What do you get when you take the body of a LOTUS ELISE and give it a green heart? The TESLA ROADSTER a PLUG-IN THRILL RIDE that says the future really can BE ELECTRIC!
ITS NOT JUST GASOLINE and nasty exhaust emissions the
new Tesla Roadster spares the world. As the first high-
performance EV (electric vehicle), it also cuts down on noise
pollution. Thats because the roar characteristic of sports
cars with an internal combustion engine has been tamed
to a barely audible purr by the Silicon Valley upstart. For
some enthusiasts, the quiet can be disconcertinga turnoff
evenbut for the eco-conscious lover of exotic cars, thinking
of this debut model from Tesla Motors as the silent, stealthy
type can be an automotive aphrodisiac. C O N T I N U E D . . .

Unlike other high-performance cars,
the electric Tesla Roadster is perfectly
at ease cruising low and slow (and
silently) down the boulevard. But press
the accelerator, and youre rewarded
with an instant surge of power.

MAR IA L I SSANDRELLO writes frequently about automobiles and food.
She is also the librettist for opera composer Christof Bergman.
If your experience of electric vehicles
is limited to golf carts, the Tesla
Roadster just might blow your mind.
The car will take you smoothly from
0 to 60 mphor 60 to 120, for that
matterin less than 4 seconds.
Modeled after the Lotus Elise, the carbon-fiber car weighs in
at 2,700 pounds, 36 percent of it claimed by the battery, or rather
batteries6,831 of them to be precise. That may be 781 pounds
more than the Elise, but dont worrythe extra weight doesnt slow
it down. Quite the contrary. EVs produce maximum torque at 0 rpm,
so a press of the Tesla Roadsters accelerator launches you like a
torpedo, pinning your back to the seat. No surprise the small, sleek
car does 0 to 60 in 3.9 seconds. And the relentless torque means
a single-speed transmission is all thats needed to get you where
youre going at a rate that outpaces the Lotus. For sure, with its
slot-car handling and Yokohama tires that grip the road like Velcro,
its a blast to drive.
On the flip side, when you take your foot off the accelerator,
the regenerative braking system (which recycles the energy usually
lost through braking) kicks in at once, causing the car to slow before
youve even tapped the Brembo brakes. Its a function that takes
some getting used to and may have you stopping short of stop signs
and red lights.
Of course, before you can put the pedal to the metal, you have
to get into the cara feat for any driver whos not lean and lithe. Like
the Lotus, the Tesla sits ultra-low to the ground. Once you manage to
sling your legs over the door sill and lower yourself into the narrow
bucket seat, youll notice its none too roomy. The Spartan cockpit
(which is, of course, what the purist wants in a sports car) pretty
much rules out the revolutionary EV as an option for those seeking
long-haul comfort.
Then again, the longest distance the Tesla Roadster will take

you on a single charge is 244 miles. What then? Itll take about three-
and-a-half hours to charge upat a cost of just $4 to $7, depending
on your local electricity rates. And never having to spend a drop on
gas or oil isnt the only savings: The car is virtually maintenance free.
Just thinkno oil changes, no mufflers, no timing belts. About the
only thing that can wear out over time is the battery, which means no
worries about mechanical breakdowns.
And heres another perk: Youll enjoy a $7,500 Federal tax cred-
it, not to mention incredible savings on gas. New Jersey waives
sales and use tax on EVs. So if you live in N.J. and the Tesla Road-
sters $109,000 sticker price sounds steep, consider that youd reap
an immediate savings of at least $10,000. All told, choosing the
Tesla could bring savings of $25,000 over an equivalent gas guz-

Test-driving the TeslaWHEN THE GOOD FOLKS AT VULCAN MOTOR CLUB let me play with their Tesla
Roadster for a day, I learned that the most fun thing about this vehicle, hands
down, is the stunning acceleration. Turn the key in the ignition, or whatever you
call it in an electric car, and a beep tells you the motor is on. Theres no engine
sound, no vibration. Tap the accelerator ever so gently, and the car eases into
motion like a golf cart. You could glide quietly down a parade route at 1 mph. But
press down on the pedal, and now youre Han Solo making the jump to hyper-space.
Whats more, the smooth, silent, instantaneous surge of power is available at any
speed. Going from 60 to 120 is the same as going from 0 to 60a thrill that lasts
a little less than 4 seconds. Whether on back roads or the highway, I found myself
looking for any opportunity to unleash a sudden, massive burst of speed.
My Tesla ride was not entirely silent. Besides the hum of the tires and the
whistling wind, I heard a creaking spring that begged for adjustment. But I could
forgive imperfections in fi t and fi nish. This was, after all, the fi rst generation of a
brand new automotive marque.
Thanks to its Lotus body, the Tesla Roadster scored big points for looks.
Some guy passed me on the highway, honking, smiling and giving a thumbs up.
I waved back and then smoked him, unable to resist the pleasure of punching it
one more time. Mark Dowden

Swiss watches are known for their accuracy, but only 5 percent
of them receive the ultimate designation of certified chronometer,
meaning the timepiece has been tested by the official Swiss chro-
nometer testing institute, the Contrle Officiel Suisse des Chro-
nomtres, or COSC, and has met its rigorous standards.
The only major watchmaker that chooses to send the COSC all
of its movements, mechanical and quartz-driven alike, is Breitling.
The company took this step a decade ago, continuing a path of fa-
natical devotion to precision that can be traced back to the founder,
Lon Breitling.
When Lon launched his family enterprise in 1884 in Saint-
Imier, Switzerland, his aim was not to make watches that served
merely to record the time, but to make measuring instruments for
science, sport and industry. His obsession coincided with the second
industrial revolution and the ascendancy of the internal combustion
engine, which required perfect accuracy and reliability in
its timing mechanisms.
When Lons son Gaston took the helm of Breitling in
1914, the age of flight was under way. Gaston presented
the first wrist-worn chronograph for pilots a year later. He
had the idea of creating a push piece independent from
the crown, which handled all three chronograph functions
start, stop and reset. In 1923 this system was perfected by
separating the start and stop functions from the reset; the
reset function was moved from the push piece to the crown.
This patented innovation made it possible to perform several
timing operations in a row without having to reset the hands,
thereby making it easy to add up total time elapsed. In 1934,
Lons grandson Willy gave the chronograph its modern
face by adding a second independent push piece at

4 oclocka style that was instantly copied by other makers and has
remained the worldwide standard.
It was in the 1930s that Breitling began manufacturing timing in-
struments for the cockpits of aircraft. The Royal Air Force was an early
customer, as were many of the great aircraft manufacturers of the mid-
20th centuryDouglas, Lockheed, Vickers. Commercial airlines fol-
lowed suitAmerican, Pan-Am, United, BOAC and KLM among them.
The ubiquity of Breitling chronometers in cockpits earned the company
the title of Official Supplier to World Aviation.
Breitling also developed the definitive pilots wristwatch, the Navi-
timer. Introduced in 1952, the watch incorporated a circular slide rule
that allowed pilots to perform all flight-plan calculations. The Aircraft
Owners and Pilots Association, the worlds largest pilot group, made
the Navitimer its official watch. A version of the Navitimer, the Cos-
monaute, went into space with Scott Carpenter in the Aurora capsule
in 1962.
Willy Breitling continued to innovate late in life, introducing the
first self-winding chronograph movement, the Caliber 11, in 1969. A
decade later, in 1979, ownership of Breitling passed to another family
when Ernest Schneider took over. While continuing Breitlings techno-
logical leadership in mechanical chronographs, Schneider also gained
for Breitling a leading position in electronic watches, with models such
as the Emergency.
The Emergency wristwatch has a built-in radio transmitter that can

be activated by the wearer. The model used in civilian aviation broad-
casts on the 121.5 MHz distress signal, while the model for military us-
ers broadcasts on the 243 MHz military frequency. On flat land or calm
seas, the signal can be picked up 90 miles away.
TV viewers of Man vs. Wild can spot survival expert Bear Grylls
wearing a Breitling Emergency in many episodes of the show. And the
watch can indeed save ones life. Two R.A.F. pilots, Steve Brooks and
Hugh Quentin-Smith, activated their Breitling Emergency watches after
their helicopter crashed in Antarctica. A Chilean aircraft found them by
homing in on the signals from their wrists.
The inherent accuracy of the quartz watchwhich nearly spelled
the death of the mechanical timepiece in the late 20th centuryis not
accurate enough for Breitling. A quartz watch typically varies two to
three minutes per year. In 2002, Breitling introduced superquartz. Its
thermal compensation sensor minimizes temperatures effect on the
quartz movement, resulting in an average yearly variation of just 15 sec-
ondsfully 10 times better than standard quartz.
Clockwise from top, members of the Breitling Aviation Academy; a 1937
advertisement emphasized the brands connection to aviation; the Bentley GMT
model features an ingenious multiple time zone display system; the Breitling
chronograph was a staple for early aviators such as Amelia Earhart.

Breitling was an originator of the big wristwatch for purely
functional reasons. When big watches became a design statement
as well, Breitling upped the ante, introducing the Breitling for Bentley
line, in collaboration with the automobile maker, in 2003. The lead
model, the Bentley Motors watch, has an imposing 48.7-millimeter
case with a knurled bezel reminiscent of Bentleys instrument con-
trols. True to the spirit of both brands, the watch also boasts two ex-
clusive functions: The center hand sweeps once around the dial in half
a minute rather than 60 seconds, enabling an accurate read-off to the
eighth of a second. The watch also has a unique variable tachometer,
which calculates average speed regardless of time elapsed, distance
covered or speed achieved.
Today Breitling is led by Ernest Schneiders son Theodore, mak-
ing it one of the rare large Swiss watchmaking firms (Patek Philippe
is another) that remains in family hands. This independent status
gives Breitling the luxury to pursue the most challenging innovations,
indulging a passion for precision that began five generations ago.

ESCAPEMALDIVESTO THE
REETHI RAH and COCOA ISLAND offer two visions of BEACHSIDE PARADISE
THINK DESERT-ISLAND PARADISE, and a variety of tropical images inevitably come to
mind: sandy beaches that are ultra-white and silky under foot, a crystal sea studded
with colorful coral reefs, azure skies, perfect palm trees and, of course, quiet seclusion.
If one destination matches this mental checklist, its the Maldives, an island
republic sprawled across 56,000 square miles of the Indian Ocean. The Maldives has
the distinction of being the worlds lowest-lying country; its sandy hillocks rarely reach
more than a few meters above sea level. Thats because the entire country is a constel-
lation of coral reef atolls. Twenty-six atolls comprise 1,192 small islands, only 202
of which are inhabited. Of these, about 90 are resort islands, and of the 90, perhaps
18 are truly special, the location of some of the most rarefi ed resorts anywhere. C O N T I N U E D . . .

Perched over water, the villas at Cocoa Island emphasize barefoot luxury. The resort setting is
more reef than island, as seen in the photo below; snorkeling and diving are prime activities here.
At Reethi Rah (opposite), high ceilings, natural materials and minimalist style distinguish the large
villas. Beachside diningal fresco, of courseis one of several mealtime options.
While the Maldives has had occasional visitors for millenniait was a stop on ancient
Persian and Chinese trade routesit was only in the mid-1990s that tourism took off,
meaning virtually all of the resorts in the Maldives are quite new. The best of these resorts
have a lot in common: Each has luxury villas of unique design. Each has extraordinary coral
reefs lying just offshore, a world of rays, triggerfi sh, clownfi sh and hawksbill turtles. Each
has stellar service and a great spabecause the whole point of a Maldives vacation is to
send you home relaxed, recharged and refreshed. Its why Donna Karan, Sienna Miller,
Beyonc Knowles and Sir Paul McCartney are major fans.
But the approach to relaxation varies by resort. Here we present two resorts consis-
tently rated among the best of the best, representing two ends of the relaxation spectrum:
One&Only Reethi Rah makes you comfortable with electronic amenities and glamorous
surroundings, while Cocoa Island epitomizes the concept of barefoot luxury.
REETHI RAH
One&Only resorts are the top-tier properties of Butch Kerzner, who developed Atlantis in
the Bahamas and Mohegan Sun in Connecticut. There are just six One&Only resorts world-
wide (the best-known to Americans being Palmilla at the tip of the Baja Peninsula), and
what they share are sophistication without stuffi ness and service that approaches six stars.
Reethi Rah, located on North Mal atoll, is no different. The experience begins at the
airport, where one of the hotels high-speed custom yachts (which doubles as a registration

desk) whisks you to the property, one of the few islands in the
Maldives that has been expanded, in this case to six times its
original size. There are 130 large villas, some set on stilts over
the water. The beach villas have outdoor king-sized sun beds
set on private infi nity pools next to the beach.
In a country renowned for its spas, Reethi Rah sets the
bar high. An ESPA spa offers 10 treatment rooms and many ay-
urvedic therapies, not to mention signature treatments like the
ESPA Energy Equalizer with Volcanic Hot Stones. Theres a yoga
pavilion, women-only areas and multi-day Wellness Journeys,
such as the seven-day Holistic Fitness journey.
The choice of restaurants at Reethi Rah is superb. Fanditha
serves Lebanese cuisine on tables placed on the sand as well
as in Arabian-style tents; Tapasake offers Japanese fusion;
Reethi Restaurant has an international menu. And the remote
location is no barrier to gastronomic excellence. Sushi-grade
fi sh is fl own in from Tokyo, free-range lamb from Australia,
strawberries from Belgium. Reethi Rah ranks number 17 for
foodin the world, mind youon the Cond Nast Traveler Gold
List 2009 of the Best Hotels in the World.
COCOA ISLAND
Cocoa Island has a deceptive simplicity, not unlike that of its
sister Como resort, Parrot Cay, half a world away in the Turks &
Caicos. Its as if the humble but well-located beach shack has

been made over with cool urban chic.
Cocoa lies in South Mal atoll, a 35-minute speedboat transfer
from the international airport. Hotelier Christina Ongs philosophy pre-
vails here, so the property remains a simple islet covered with palms,
wild sea grapes and hibiscus, encircled by a reef with proverbial gin-clear waters.
The resort is small, just 33 rooms, and its architecture unusual. Serpentine
wooden walkways lead out to each accommodation, which is set on stilts, with
baby sharks and reef fi sh circling below. There are rooms, suites, loft suites and
loft villas, the latter with kitchen and private butler. The Dhoni suites are built to
resemble local fi shing boats. Surrounded by water, they actually look like fl oating
boats, but they are fi rmly secured on stilts. Each has a full-length glass wall, giving
you a sweeping view of the Indian Ocean from your bed.
Inside they are airy indeed, with high cathedral ceilings. Bathrooms are huge,
with separate shower and tub. But its the natural materials that are standouts.
There are lots of white fabrics, including Frette sheets. The furnishings are wood
and understated, fl oors are teak, and the overall mood rather Zen-like.
Maybe the single biggest reason to choose Cocoa Island is the Shambhala
Retreat, widely considered among the best spas in the Maldives. If youre pining
for an Abhyanga Ayurvedic massage or a two-hour Como Shambhala Ritual mas-
sage, go for it. After a morning of yoga on the beach, of course. This place has
a massive reputation among devotees of yoga, and some of the worlds leading
instructors hang out here.
Cuisine is a major part of your stay at any Como property, and at the Ufaa
restaurant, which is thatched with alang alang grass, you sit on large sofas and
cushions. You can expect Indian-, Sri Lankan- and Thai-style cuisine, or you can
elect low-fat, organic Como Shambhala cuisine.
At Cocoa Island, you can literally snorkel from your room to reef. And if
youve ever contemplated learning to dive, these calm waters would be the place
to begin. Theres even deep sea fi shing and windsurfi ng available as well.
But to capture the true spirit of Cocoa Island, simply take a private boat to a
deserted beach, with champagne, picnic and partner in hand. After all, you dont
want to overdo it in paradise.
