Hot August Nights....

Every year as I head into the month of August, I always catch myself questioning where the summer has gone. This year is no different as I realized there was so much more I wanted to accomplish and do before the summer wraps up. In the past, I have overbooked my last few weekends, fitting in as many day trips and

activities as possible leaving myself exhausted as I headed into fall. This year, I have taken the spontaneous approach to my summer calendar. Most, if not all of my summer outings have been on a whim adding a bit of adventure to every corner. I decided to take my first solo trip to the beach, which I highly recommend to anyone who needs a little rest and relaxation. That particular trip I ended up meeting some amazing people who have since stayed in touch and have become great friends! I would have never done this in the past, however after some encouragement to head out on my own, it turned out to be one of the most memorable. As we all head into the final days of summer, I encourage you all to add a little spontaneity to your last few weeks. Take advantage of these hot August nights and try something new. With spontaneous trips, a few hiccups are bound to happen. However I assure you in the end, they will leave you laughing and make a great story to tell later on. In this issue, we are so excited to announce our video series we launched earlier last month. Please visit our website and social media pages to see our behind the scenes footage and meet the people behind our amazing features. This month we sought out to find the best burgers around town. Each restaurant prepared a new creation adding the "Lavish Burger" to their menu! Please be sure to visit these restaurants and try out their amazing and delicious burgers. You will not be disappointed! We also spotlighted an amazing local celebrity stylist, Jacqueline Gage, in our Lavish on Locals feature. Her re-sume is incredibly impressive, so please make sure to read on about this fun and talented woman. It is also that time of year to be sending the kiddos back to school, so we have your checklist to make you the coolest mom on the block with some fun and trendy finds. As always, thank you all for your loyal readership. I hope you all enjoy the last few days of summer and see you in September!

BY KELSEY WEHSELS

Growing up in her mother’s hair salon in East Sacramento, Jacqueline Gage learned at a young age that she had a knack for enhancing things to make them aesthetically pleasing, especially outfits.

“I would instruct my mother and grandmother on what to wear and they would actually listen,” she said. “I have always been opinionated, especially when it comes to fashion.” Gage’s fashion adventures began when she moved to Southern California to attend California State University, Northridge, where she graduated with a degree in theater. However, it was before graduation where her career took off. She got experience by working for top celebrity stylists where she learned the ins and outs of the entertainment industry. In her first month alone, she styled big name celebrities such as Penelope Cruz, Jessica Biel, Rebecca Romijn, and Kyra Sedgwick.

After graduation, she got a job at Neiman Marcus, where she continued to assist various celebrity stylists. “During this time, I was honing my styling skills in multiple ways,” she explained. “I got very good at addressing women’s concerns and developing tips and tricks to make them look and feel their absolute best!”Over time, she became a freelance stylist, working in various capacities ranging from editorial, advertising, commercials, music videos, fashion shows, and television. On top of styling, she also hosted various entertainment outlets such as Wtv, Hello Hollywood, and LA Social, talking about entertainment, fashion, and art-related topics. Some of the big names she has interviewed are Alec Baldwin, Jamie Lee Curtis, Kristen Bell, and Vivica Fox. Gage even had the privilege of styling Taylor Swift for her first Grammy appearance, which is one of her most memorable moments. “She wore a purple beaded dress, which I wasn’t thrilled about, but it was her

pick,” she explained. On her way to the Grammy’s, she received a phone call from Swift’s manager who asked Gage if she could provide a manicure and pedicure as well. “This was really weird since fashion stylists just do wardrobe, but I figured they were new to the whole entertainment game and maybe just thought I was a one stop shop,” she explained. Agreeing to do the manicure and pedicure, Gage was beyond nervous as she did not want to disappoint the singer. When all was said and done, Gage pulled it off, and even received a compliment on her work. “At the end of it, she told I did a better job than her usual girl, I just had a good inside chuckle,” she said. She recently moved back to Sacramento where she is the owner of Style by Gage, styling the locals of Northern California. “After being in a very busy city like Los Angeles, I am enjoying the slower pace of Sacramento,” she said. “I feel because it is a smaller city, there is a really nice sense of community here that is hard to find in other places.” And if you don’t see her working, you can find her at local antique shops, flea markets and thrift shops. “I love interior decorating, in fact, after helping some clients with their personal style, I have had a few ask me to help them with their interior as well,” she explained. On top of styling and decorating, Gage has continued her hosting career in Sacramento, where she has recently did her first fashion segment on Good Day Sacramento.

L O L CHARITY SPOTLIGHT

Among the many resources for women and children overcoming homelessness, pov-erty, violence, abuse, and health conditions, Women’s Wisdom Art stands out as one of a kind. An empowerment program for women, it was established in 1986 to give women a way to not only distract themselves from the gravity of their situation, but to give them a way to express themselves through a healthy medium: art. An affordable, safe place for low income women to go to begin a transition, the wom-en who come to the program relearn social skills to integrate themselves back into so-ciety. Along the way, they are creating art that is leaving a lasting impact on their com-

munity. The founders of the Women’s Wisdom Art program believe art is the best mechanism for healing through creative self-ex-pression. The program offers various kinds of art experi-ences for the women who at-tend, including water color, acrylics, poetry, and mosaics. Teachers volunteer their time to provide art instructions, and any art created in the stu-dios can later be displayed in an exhibit. Because Women’s Wisdom Art operates on a tight

budget to offer classes and art supplies, any donations and volun-teers are immensely appreciated. Although the money from each art sale goes directly to the artist, at least 25% of it is passed on to the program to help pay for supplies. The program has become a catalyst for those hoping to break out of a depression, who are resigning themselves to their homes, and for those trying to come back out of a shell.”I’m learning to like the one I see in the mirror,” one attendee said. Program Di-rector Helen Plenert began as an acrylics teacher in 2002, teach-ing one class per week. “I knew nothing about the healing powers of the arts until I saw transformation in the women I was working with,” she said. “In some cases I didn’t recognize them from one week to another.” Art proceeds are paramount in keeping the program operating. When first established, it was supported by a grant, and founder Laura Ann Walton and the staff continually applied for them. Eventually, grant resources were no longer available, creating a

challenge to keep Women’s Wisdom Art going. Sacramento Food Bank and Family Services took the program under its wing, modifying the already empowering program and assisting the artists in showcasing their work at quarterly art shows. Women’s Wisdom Art has become the haven many women have needed to start a journey of recovery, and the help of the community has more than contributed to keeping that going. “The response from Sacramento was one that embraced us as a necessary program for this community,” said Plenert.

TRENDING with DebiVACATION HOMES SALESSOAR TO RECORD HIGH:IS NOW THE RIGHT TIME FOR YOU TO GET A SECOND HOME?BY DEBI AMBROFF

As you enjoy your annual summer vacation in Hawaii, Lake Tahoe or perhaps the scenic Monterey Peninsula, it's only natural to start thinking about owning your own vacation home so the holiday never has to end. If you've been kicking around the idea of buying a second home, you're not alone.

According to the National Association of REALTORS®, vacation home sales have been soaring in recent years as the housing market has rebounded and the stock market continues to be strong. NAR’s 2015 statistical analysis estimates that sales of vacation properties in the U.S. jumped to a record 1.13 million in 2014, the most vacation homes sold in any

Page 28: Lavish Living Magazine August 2015

year since NAR began keeping track of this segment of the market in 2003. According to NAR's 2015 Investment and Vacation Home Buyers Survey, sales of vacation properties spiked 57% last year compared to 2013. In fact, sales in 2014 were nearly double the number of the previous two years combined. NAR says that the average vacation homebuyer had a median household income of $94,380. Vacation homebuyers acquired properties that were a median distance of 200 miles away from their primary residence. Four out of 10 buyers bought a vacation home in a beach area while 19% purchased in the country and 17% purchased in the mountains. So is now the right time for you to buy a vacation home of your own? Here are a few things to consider if you are in the market: • Choose your location carefully. Most vacation homebuyers should choose a location that offers the greatest number of amenities and benefits that fit with their interests, whether it’s a beach resort, a ski area, or a place to play golf. If you want your friends and family to enjoy it with you, you may want it to choose a place that is conveniently located for all of the people you want to use that home. As wonderful as Hawaii might be, jumping on a plane for five hours may be a physical or financial challenge for some people. That's perhaps one reason why buyers in NAR's® vacation home survey bought a property that was a median distance of 200 miles from their main home.

• Visit the destination multiple times before buying. Before purchasing in any particular area, you may want to consider staying in local accommodations or possibly renting a home in your preferred area at various times of the year and hopefully for extended periods of time so as to get a better sense of the locale. You should make sure that you won't get bored with the location of your second home. Some people buy a vacation property with the ultimate intent of using it as their retirement home. Thus, it is important to think about how the location will fit into your short and long term plans and to consult with your financial planner as to the best means of achieving those goals.

• Be realistic about costs and how often you will use the second home. Just like a primary residence, there are far more costs to owning a vacation home than the down payment and the mortgage. Property taxes, local assessment districts, homeowners’ association fees and costs, maintenance costs and utilities can add up quickly. It is also important to factor in how often you are likely to use the home as compared to the cost of ownership. • Buying with an eye to renting. NAR® statistics show that approximately one out of every four vacation homebuyers plan to rent out their properties at least occasionally, but there are potential drawbacks to renting to strangers There are no assurances that vacation homes can be successfully rented and some jurisdictions (as well as some common interest developments) limit the ability of homeowners to rent their properties to others on either a short term or long term basis. It is best to do your homework and consult with your legal, tax and insurance advisors before buying any

property that you may want to use for any type of rental purposes.

• Get help from a professional REALTOR®. With mortgage interest rates still historically low and the housing market bouncing back, this may be a good time to buy a vacation home. But finding the right property at the right price that meets your needs can be a challenge. It's important to work with an experienced real estate professional who understands the particular market you're considering, as well as vacation home purchases in general. With the assistance of a knowledgeable REALTOR®, I know you'll be able to find that special vacation home that you and your family can enjoy for many years to come. Let me know if I can help!

LAVISH LIVING MAGAZINE | AUGUST 2015 29

Owning a home is one of the most coveted milestones we all hope to reach in our lives. With renting comes a limitation on what kind of decorating and remodeling can happen: usually nothing. We’re lucky if we can even paint the walls. Home-owning gives us the freedom to put our best creative self on, come up with a vision of how we want our home to look, and then flip our house into something completely different. In 2013, the remodeling app Planese put out the results of an online survey showing Ameri-cans are willing to spend about 30% of their

home’s value to remodel. In 2010, it was estimat-ed Americans planned to spend about $102,000 to renovate. Imagine how much that could’ve doubled since. With so many different styles of homes, it can be difficult to choose the right one for us. From Victorian, Southern, and farmhouse, to Spanish colonial, and craftsman, each one has something special to offer. But one style has been imple-mented more often in recent years: contempo-rary. Featuring an extensive use of natural light, clean, smooth, and sleek lines, and a no-clutter

feel, contemporary stemmed off modern archi-tecture, but really became popular in the 1970s. It blended a variety of styles, ranging from futur-ism to post-modernism. Because it borrowed so much of modernism, it’s no wonder contempo-rary is often confused with it. The main differ-ence being modern tends toward neutral colors, while contemporary is often seen with bold col-ors. While many find contemporary style too for-mal or “empty,” there still remains a loyal follow-ing who know the secrets to adding flair. Unlike modern, contemporary design is always

Page 32: Lavish Living Magazine August 2015

30 LAVISH LIVING MAGAZINE | AUGUST 2015

changing. While modern will always be one style, contemporary could be one thing one day, and a completely new vibe and style a couple months after. This is part of what makes it so easy to in-corporate it into design plans. Nar Bustamante, owner of Nar Bustamante Fine Carpentry, designs and builds with contemporary in mind. “People are drawn to contemporary because it’s cleaner, less clutter,” he said. “[It’s] a worldly language we all speak and understand. We aren’t trying to impersonate a time, like Tuscan style, or French villa.” Even celebrities, such as John Mayer, Ryan Phillippe, and Harrison Ford try to incorporate the design into their kitchens with marble or granite countertops, stainless steel appliances, and the well-liked glass-front cabinets.

Contemporary’s infamous philosophy “form follows function” implies architects and design-ers follow simplicity, breaking away from any un-necessary details. In addition, instead of taking the structures of a home and adding onto it with intricate detail, designers pay less attention to fancy details, and embrace the structural material (wood, teak, leather, glass, steel, and other often-used materials), making it a focal point. To put it simply, airy and open. Wide open spaces is the signature mark of a contemporary home. Contemporary is stereotyped as being cold or standoffish. In real-ity, there are many ways to mix in that welcoming feeling, including picking warm-toned materials, cheerful colors, and paying close attention to the furniture arranged around the house. And just in

Page 33: Lavish Living Magazine August 2015

LAVISH LIVING MAGAZINE | AUGUST 2015 31

case we feel pressured to make our entire home contemporary, Busta-mante assures it is possible to mix it without deviating too much from contemporary’s purpose. “No one can be completely con-temporary,” he said. “[You can mix] both contemporary and traditional to make it a shabby, luxurious, chic look, where you have some of the elements, but then very influenced by the modern approach of just getting rid of the clutter.” Busta-mante’s specialty is not so much the furniture in a home, but the heartscape: kitchen, fireplace, liv-ing room. When a client looks to him for design, his technique is to first stop by the house to conduct an interview about their vision and what they’re looking for. “We look at their space first to see what they have. Usually by them show-ing us pictures, I’m able to get a sense of what it is that they’re af-ter,” he said. For those looking to improve upon their home, Busta-mante warns there isn’t really an easy, DIY way. “As an investor in high end luxury living, there’s no inexpensive way. Ikea tries to iden-tify that for some people, but there really isn’t - it goes back to a way of life,” he said. “You don’t have to spend tons of money on everything you do, you invest in over time.” Bustamante insists it begins with decluttering, and advises hiring a professional. “You wouldn’t do your own dentistry, so I wouldn’t recom-mend doing this on your own.”

Sherrie Swass, who owns her own interior design company, echoes Bustamante’s thoughts on blending warmth with the stereo-typical “cold” contemporary. In fact, it’s becoming a trend to inter-mix wood with tougher materials. “Sleek and smooth metals com-bined with natural looking wood,” she said. “The contrast is beautiful and it adds an organic contempo-rary look.” An inexperienced, bud-ding homeowner/designer might look at the options, feel instantly overwhelmed, and back away in intimidation. But Swass assures, “Contemporary is easy to live with. You can dress it up or down with the right fabric prints and acces-sories.” It doesn’t mean living in a bare house, no personality in sight. Updating artwork, rugs, and pil-lows is a small but statement-mak-ing place to start. The designers of Furnitalia agree an added benefit to contemporary design is the “rejuvenating” feeling one feels, and the sense of “elegant and timeless harmony.” The dis-tractions and noise of daily life are what many seek to get away from at the end of the day. “When you come home to an environment that is simple and easy to follow, lines make sense and create space to think, reflect and admire. The mind tends to rejuvenate, relax and reflect," said Ruth Priscaro, Furnitalia interior designer. While that feeling might come with a few dollar signs attached, “Furniture

that is made well and known for its iconic design will last much lon-ger than something that was made poorly and trendy. [It] may be more expensive at first but that invest-ment will carry on way past furni-ture that will have to be replaced in a few years.” That said, the Furnita-lia designers assure any budget can be worked with. The guarantee of originality is what will keep homeowners com-

ing back for more contemporary. Priscaro always looks forward to collaborating on designs with her clients, and seeing them come to fruition. “To create is a very primal experience aligned with a happy life. This style represents the need for us to settle. When our living space is clear of noise and distrac-tion, it becomes a place of sanctu-ary. And that is in essence the use of a home,” Priscaro said.

We’ve visited Pasadena many times over the years and usually it’s to see their world famous Rose Parade or attend a football game in the city’s stunning Rose Bowl, the queen of the holiday stadiums. And those two attractions are enough for us to consider multiple returns to this lovely city at the base of the picturesque San Gabriel Mountains National Monument. But now, after our most recent visit, we’ve added numerous other reasons why we can strongly recommend readers consider Pasadena as a viable vacation destination. Now read on as to what we’ve recently experienced that places this lovely city into that premier ‘bed of roses’ getaway stratosphere.

WHAT TO SEE AND DO: •The Huntington, as it’s titled on their brochures, is one of the most famous and popular attractions in Southern California. Officially, it’s known as the Huntington Library, Art Collection and Botanical Gardens. Most people just call it the Huntington Library and over the years we’ve been told numerous times we should visit. Since we were just not into ‘libraries’ we just never bothered to learn that it was so much more than a collection of books. Our bad! The Huntington is truly one of the country’s most magnificent estates and it should be touted as such. When you check out their website and learn about the fascinating history associated with the Huntington family and what’s included on the estate we feel confident you’ll be drawn in. www.huntington.org

Everything's Coming Up Roses

•Norton Simon Museum is recognized worldwide as one of the most prestigious private art collections ever placed into a public museum. Celebrated works by Raphael, Rembrandt, van Gogh, Degas, and Picasso are included in this amazing collection of many classic art genres spanning over 2000 years. www.nortonsimon.org

•Gamble House is one of the country’s finest examples of Arts and Crafts furnishings and architecture open for public tours. This glorious 1908 estate, now owned by the city and a National Historic Landmark, was originally designed for the Gamble family of Proctor & Gamble fame. www.gamblehouse.org

•Pacific Asia Museum provides a rich array of Chinese, Japanese, Himalayan and Pacific Islands artifact collections and the building’s Asian architecture was as interesting as the displays. Now operated by the University of Southern California bodes well for their future security and ongoing improvements. www.pacificasiamuseum.org

•Pasadena Museum of History is located on the Fenyes Mansion property, one of few estates on the famous Millionaire’s Row still open for tours, and touring the mansion

is the highlight of this museum. Original period furnishings, family heirlooms, and a unique California plein-air art collection enhance this 1906 Beaux Arts-style architectural jewel. A short visit to their Finnish Folk Art Museum (Mr. Fenyes was Finnish), also on property, is the only museum of its’ kind in our country and is worth a peek. www.pasadenahistory.org

•Old Pasadena is the area’s premier destination for shopping, dining and

entertainment. Even though it’s historically the old part of town the wonderful upgrades and modernization over the years has made the “old” moniker quite inaccurate. Tip: Curbside parking meters are free before 11am and the first 90 minutes are always free in the Park & Walk parking garages. www.oldpasadena.org •California Institute of Technology, known to most as Cal Tech, has been recognized for years as one the world’s most prestigious private universities and research institutions of higher learning. Taking a one hour casual stroll through the center of their beautiful 126 acre campus is a recommended highlight when visiting Pasadena. www.caltech.edu •Rose Bowl Tours and their famous Flea Market only operate once a month so check out the website for schedules of both. If neither are open, try to walk, bike, run or jog the loop around the grounds of this famous sports icon built in 1922. Now home to all of UCLA’s home football games, besides the annual Rose Bowl game, it gives sport lovers more opportunities to attend a game in this grandfather of all the American bowl sites. www.rosebowlstadium.com •Rose Parade, also known as the Tournament of Roses, started in 1890 and remains

one of the most renowned events in the parade universe. Their elaborate floats now feature high-tech computerized animation, exotic natural materials from around the world and all the floats together use approximately 18 million flowers. www.tournamentofroses.com

WHERE TO STAY: •The Langham Huntington is the city’s premier hotel and one of California’s most historic lodging properties exuding a yesteryear elegance. Luxurious public areas, classically decorated guest accommodations, private club level rooms, an award winning spa and health club are hallmarks. Meals in their three restaurants-Royce Steakhouse, Terrace and Tap Room-were all especially positive culinary experiences. Located in a very upscale neighborhood just staying at the hotel allows you to view many of the finest estate and mansion type homes found in Southern California. www.pasadena.langhamhotels.com

•The Constance is Pasadena’s newest boutique style hotel and possesses wonderful four star potential as their owners continue to upgrade this historic site. Surprising, yet beautiful, modern decor and very tech savvy accommodations have given this classic edifice an exciting new avant-garde vibe. Concierge level rooms with a club lounge, fitness center, spa, event space, another dining option plus a rooftop pool with sundeck and pool bar are coming in 2016. Management is under the well regarded Dusit Hotel group of Thailand. Our one meal in their bluRoom Lounge was quite good. www.dusit.com/dusitd2/pasadena

WHERE TO DINE:For a few years now dining critics have been anointing Pasadena as the Los Angeles area’s trendy restaurant capitol and although we were only able to try three restaurants besides those in our hotels we can’t argue with that proclamation. Here are three to consider: •La Grande Orange Cafe was a special dining experience featuring a modern train station locale, creative takes on American standards, wonderful service and a fun atmosphere. Try the fresh cookies at the front door on arrival. www.lgostationcafe.com

•Cafe Santorini in Old Town specializes in very innovative Mediterranean cuisine in the upstairs of a historic brick building and features romantic outdoor rooftop dining and an extensive wine list. www.cafesantorini.com

•Racion Restaurant is a quite small tapas gastropub and highly regarded by critics for their bold Spanish Basque offerings and we’d recommend dinners rather than lunches where service was quite slow. www.racionrestaurant.com

NEARBY SIDE TRIPS:Right next door in the city of Arcadia, and practically on the Pasadena border, are two attractions we recommend visiting when in town. Santa Anita, one of the country’s finest horse tracks, is a must trek for anyone interested in the sport of kings. Before heading off be sure to ask your hotel concierge or front desk clerk if the racing season is in full throttle. www.santaanita.com. Almost across the street from Santa Anita is the Arboretum of Los Angeles County, a 127 acre botanic garden featured in many movies and TV shows and an ideal location for hiking. Don’t miss seeing the Queen Anne cottage, the Train Depot, and the Mayberg Waterfall. www.arboretum.org

When you think of the perfect burger, do you imagine two bread buns slapped together against a patty, with a half-melted slice of cheese, and maybe a squirt or two of ketchup? Or, do you imagine two oven-broiled buns, a slight firmness to them, holding together a 6 oz ground pork shoulder patty with lettuce, a tasty Guinness BBQ sauce, melted cheddar cheese and crispy tobacco onions? If it's the latter, you're probably thinking of the Dubliner Guinness Pork Burger at the Relish Burger Bar.

Established in 2010, Relish Burger Bar was opened by the owners of Folsom’s Bidwell Street Bistro. “[I got] lucky,” owner Richard Righton said of how he came to own the bar. His inspiration? “We wanted a full bar serving burgers, and the first time we were in Hawaii, we saw an inside outside bar.” A perfect muse for his own. It’s been called the “most upscale burger joint in the region” by Sacramento Magazine, and upscale it is. With a menu designed by chef Wendi Mentink, and a list of cocktails created by the restaurant’s own bartenders, the level of originality couldn’t be any higher. There are currently 10 burgers to choose from, ranging from a veggie patty with Moroccan spices and olive relish, to a ground leg of lamb marinated in Jamaican jerk spice, and grilled pineapple for sweetener. Completely understandable if it takes more than 10 minutes to decide. There are also 35 beers to choose from, 14 on draft, and 12 wines by the glass. Righton is always tweaking the menu. He recently added eight new beers and is looking to add four new burgers. Righton’s go-to is the Bison Burger with sweet potato fries, but says there’s one burger that is a favorite

of his customers: “the Gilroy Garlic Burger,” which is topped with pepper jack cheese, pickled jalapeno, and roasted garlic aioli. Although Relish is known for its burgers, it also offers fish tacos, which pair perfectly with an ice cold margarita. Appetizers include jalapeno poppers, beer-battered onion rings, BBQ pork wings, and more. There’s certainly no shortage of flavor at Relish. And just in case you were out late last night, there’s also a Hangover Burger: a 6 oz. ground pork shoulder patty topped with one fried egg, pepper jack cheese, and chili verde salsa. Foodies will appreciate the variety of cheeses: goat, blue, cheddar, and Swiss, all of which complement their respective burgers. Choose to dine inside under some unique lighting, or outside on the open patio, complete with a bar and umbrellas for shade. Outside is also where you’ll find the live music played Wednesday and Saturday nights, featuring stylings from local bands. If you’re into karaoke, Thursday nights are where it’s at. Have the kids order some ice cream or a homemade milkshake on Sunday when kids eat free. Casual yet sophisticated - with surfboard tables just because - Relish is perfect for just hanging out.

DINING OUTwith Nick

DINING OUT WHEN YOU TRAVEL BY NICK DEDIER

Recently I decided to take my own advice. I went on a trip and it seems like all that I did was dine out. Now, I haven’t taken more than 4 days away from work since I was 26 and that was so I could move from Las Vegas to San Francisco and even then I was buttoned up in a suit marching around the floor of Restaurant Gary Danko within 5 days. So to be gone from Aji was going to be a challenge and the time away needed to be worth it. Unlike most food driven people who go to Chicago, New York, Portland, etc., I went to the mid-west to visit family and make new friends. When I would tell guests at Aji that I was going to Ohio the standard response was “why the hell are you taking your first vacation in 10 years to go to Ohio?” The family and friends part made sense, but given that my life revolves around hospitality I had to admit I was a bit uneasy about what I would find when I got there. I decided upon the “Legend of Zelda” approach. If you never played the original Nintendo version of this classic game then the reference might be lost but in general it means wander around,

find clues, use tools and generally try to bump into something important. I landed in Detroit and our trip began. My mid-western Sacajawea was Alexa and she was tasked with showing a guy like me the best places to eat and drink (a difficult task). The first place we stopped was a place called "Star Diner" where, over a massive portion of breakfast, we made plans on where to go and how to find some unique stuff. Below are some unique tips that will help you find your way in any new city you travel to. • Go some place “popular” and ask questions. Even if you go to a quaint local diner, there is going to be somebody there with some information on where to go.

• Don’t look for “the best restaurant.” This is like looking for a needle in a stack of needles. “Best restaurants” these days all seem to be alike. Seared

S I P & S AV O R DINING OUT WITH NICK

Nick Dedier

salmon on pea shoots, deconstructed chicken wings, odd takes on martinis, etc. If you’re looking for the “best restaurant,” you’re most likely going to get your garden variety, farm to whatever, boring spot. Basically you might as well stay in your home town and go to their “best restaurant.”

• Ask for the place that you “cannot miss.” I found myself using this question a lot. “I’m from the west coast, I’ll be here for a few days, what are a couple of places and foods that I cannot miss before I go home.” This question gives your audience something to think about and they will most likely give you an honest answer instead of their canned «best restaurant» answer.

• Find the best deli. If you’re in a new town the deli will most likely be your best chance to get a bad-ass sandwich with some locally made ingredients. We ended up at Zingermans in Ann Arbor and the pastrami Reuben touched my soul.

• Find the best place to enjoy a drink outside. Sometimes just a bottle of wine on a patio overlooking a river can be a memory all in itself.

• Travel. We drove to Cleveland based on a tip to visit the huge public market and as a result we found 4th street: a collection of great restaurants and bars which provided us with both the best swanky pork belly dish I have ever had in my life and the best corn dog.

• Ask where the best service is. A LOT of restaurants are constantly fighting in the middle trying to say that they have the best food. Very few restaurants a confident that they already have the best food and focus on service. More often than not a good service experience can be more transcendent than a good food experience.

Basically what I am saying here, is that you don’t have to go to the world’s epicenters of food in order to eat well and enjoy every bite. If you’re curious, ask the right questions and are open minded to trying local favorites then you’ll find yourself presently surprised. Just remember to enjoy the company you’re with and how lucky we are to be able to travel, dine and explore.

MADROÑA Vineyards

BY LAUREN CLIFFORD

Madroña Vineyards all started with a vision, the love for an exquisite piece of land, and a growing family. Dick Bush, a former Stanford engineer sets his sights on and fell in love with the sloping Foothills of the Sierras about thirty-five years ago. Along with his wife Leslie Bush and four children, Dick purchased the enchanting piece of land then planted the family’s first vineyard in 1973, and the rest is history. Passed on through generations now, Madroña Vineyards continues to be built on the basis of family, community, and

What makes this wine so amazing and different is the combination of the diversity of the hillside and the high elevation winemaking process. These growing conditions allow for optimal ripeness of the grapes, mild acidity levels, and allow for extra care of the fruit, which in turn results in a better wine. What’s even more incredible about this winery is the fact that it is one-hundred percent solar powered and they uphold the standards of sustainable farming and respect the land in which it inhabits. This vineyard provides above exceptional wine due to their extra care and attentiveness during the grape growing process resulting in a structured and balanced flavored stemming from the highest quality. In addition to Madroña Vineyards are two sister vineyards that offer the same great quality and taste. Enye Vineyard offers a variety of spicy and dense wines due to the later harvesting of the grapes, while Sumu-Kaw Vineyard offers rich ripe tasting grapes due to the vineyards consistent temperate. Both of these vineyards uphold Madroña’s careful and tentative grape growing philosophy and Sumu-Kaw is even owned and operated by son David Bush and his wife Sheila Bush. Take a tour of the casual yet intimate setting of Madroña Vineyards and enjoy a glass of exceptional wine. Who knows, you might even get to meet and enjoy that glass with Dick Bush, the legend behind it all.

team effort. Currently, son Paul Bush is the manager and winemaker ensuring that his father’s starting vision continues to thrive. Madroña Vineyards is more like a small community, where everyone is engaged and involved in the process ensuring quality grapes and quality wines with a wide variety of palates helping to uphold this standard. Located in Camino on an impressive and high elevated thirty-two acres, sits the gorgeous Madroña Vineyards. This winery is breathtakingly beautiful as it is surrounded by cedars, pines, and sloping hills that offers a view like no other. To the West, you can enjoy the lovely scenery of the coast while to the East, you can enjoy the equally lovely view of the mountains; it’s the best of both worlds right in our own backyard.

Upstream Watts

BY LAUREN CLIFFORD

Watts Winery is a staple among locals and is located in the heart of Lodi wine country. Their wine can be readily seen among local farmers markets with their unique and purposeful labels. Owners Craig and Sheri Watts pay tribute to our natural waterways, preservation of local natural habitats, and even benefit pediatric cancer research all within their bottle’s visually stimulating labels. Their newest Upstream labels have been commercially successful and have brought awareness to the preservation of our beautiful surrounding waterways and wildlife habitats with each label representing and carrying the name of a river. The roots of this winery are deeply connected to the land and stem back about four generations, making this winery a fruitful family business. Owner Craig Watts, attended Lodi High School, then went on and graduated from Cal Poly Tech and became a biologist working towards the preservation of wildlife and maintaining our locally treasured natural habitats. This same concept can be seen in their mantra for the wine business, as just like their theory on keeping the state of our land as natural as possible is also used in the making of their wonderful wines. Continuing on this tradition of preservation and love for our local land and waterways, owners Craig and Sheri share their knowledge and wine skills with their two sons and daughter, who all lend a hand at the winery alongside their various talented winemakers to ensure high quality and superb taste. This winery has the feel of a warm and inviting atmosphere where people from all over can become a part of the community just by stopping in and enjoying the stunning views from the vineyards and a delectable glass of handcrafted wine. This winery is all about the outdoors, and what a better way to connect with our community than share a piece of its surrounding untamed beauty and sharing a glass,

or a bottle of wonderful locally crafted wine? Watts Winery specializes in rich Reds, crisp Chardonnays, and an assortment of delectable dessert wines all made with high quality grapes that produce tremendous flavor because they are ripened naturally with the temperatures of our lovely valley. These award winning wines have a beautiful balance of taste, quality, clarity, and aroma and are pleasing to every sense of the palate. Made with love and care, this winery has become the perfect location to share not only a delicious wine but to contribute to our local area and support great causes. In addition to these noteworthy features, Watts Winery offers a variety of events and activities such as; live music, art shows, plays, and spectacular celebrations during certain holidays, earning it the rightfully entitled nickname “the fun winery.” Enjoy wine at its most natural state, perfectly paired food, and a show all for a good cause.

There are few simple pleasures in life as satisfying as a grill full of fresh corn and friends all around. The yellow, sweet kernels are a satisfying reminder of a day at the farmers market and backyard BBQ’s. But what are the healthy ben-efits? Frequently corn is compared to a starch rather than a nutritious veggie and many people stress that “corn free” grains, pet food, and such are better for one’s health. However, corn just might be one of the most underrated super-foods at your local produce stand. Not only does it provide nutrient rich calories that speed up your metabolism, it offers a huge daily dose of Vitamins A, B, and

E. Similarly, the high fiber elements support colon and intestinal health offer-ing prevention against digestive cancers. In addition, corn is antioxidant rich meaning it helps pull out environmental toxins from your body and flush them. The beauty of summer corn is that there is no wrong way to eat it. Corn can be eaten raw in a salad or salsa if you’re looking for a cool refreshing crunch. Or you can eat it baked, grilled, blended into a soup, inside muffins, or simply boiled with a little salt. The health properties of corn and its culinary versatility provide every summer cookout host with a dish that pleases every eater.

E T I Q U E T T E FINAL THOUGHT

DATENight BY EMILY GUERRERO

Dating is supposed to be fun. Whether you’re celebrating your 15th wedding anniversary or planning a first date, some simple etiquette can help ensure your night out is a success.

CHECK FOR THE CHECK Do offer to pay. •Do not assume your date is going to pay.

In this modern era, figuring out who pays for dinner is like a delicate dance where we tiptoe around who asked who, and what’s expected of the working woman. To avoid date awkwardness, be assertive offer to pay, it doesn’t have to be awkward. However, men, chivalry is not dead so just pick up the bill. Most women put a lot more than a glass of wine and a salad

into getting ready for your outing, it’s only fair you shell out too.

BREAKING BREAD•Do include a meal or a bite to eat.•Do not go to a crab fest or BBQ.

Food is a language everyone speaks. Impress your date with a well chosen restaurant, coffee shop, or other tasty treat. It’s proven that delicious food produces chemicals that make us all feel warm and fuzzy which offers you a short ride to a successful date. But be warned, no one feels sexy cracking crab or munching greasy ribs. If you’re in the beginning stages of a relationship, it’s best to stick a little bit more

inside the comfort zone.

LAPPING UP LIBATIONSDo have a drink.•Do not have a bunch of drinks.

A glass of wine is social lubricant. A bottle of wine is social suicide. If you’re on a date outside of the house, someone has to be the sober driver so show a little support and control yourself in public. If you're two drinks in and feel stories of your exes gurgling to the surface of conversation, you’ve

gone too far. Turn around immediately and order a water.

BE SURE TO CHAUFFER•Do pick up your date.

•Do not pick up your date on a bicycle.Driving separately deprives you of valuable bonding time and the ever anticipated drop off at the end of the night. A kiss at the front door is impossible if you part ways in the parking garage. Alternatively, if you do not have an appropriate means of transportation find another way ASAP. Taking your date out on the handlebars of your bike or in

your barely running 1992 honda should likely be avoided.

KEEP AWAY FROM THE CLICHE•Do have a plan for your date. •Do not rinse and repeat dates.

The classic “dinner and a movie” night is nice after a long stressful week when you’re not up for an adventure. It does, however, get old quickly and turn into a stale cycle. Plan something interesting and don’t be afraid to switch it up. Unique dates might include: cooking classes, wine tasting, improv nights, concerts, hiking, picnics, games at home and anything that doesn’t involve chain restaurants and

sequels in 3D.
