Law Firm Chief Strategy Officer Summit Enabling business transformation via the facilitation of strategy development and execution

Expectations are changing. And along with it we see change concerning how law firms interact with clients, how work is managed, tracked, priced… as well as how law firms brand and position themselves within the marketplace. Technology is enabling new ways of working, new practices, new relationships with clients, and even new business models. Forward-thinking in-house counsel are also leveraging technology and alternative legal service providers to drive new frameworks for handling their own legal work — improving service delivery and outcomes. With so many relatively new pressures on law firms—both financially and operationally, we are now beginning to see another new role coming to the fore...the law firm Chief Strategy Officer. Much like the rise of the Pricing Director following the recession, a number of forward-thinking law firms have created the Chief Strategy Officer role in response to market pressures—from both clients as well as other (new) entrants into the legal competitive landscape. Working within the C-Suite, we can assume that the primary role of the “CSO” involves the facilitation of strategy formation and development, enabling a more nimble enterprise, capable of the sort of business transformation that many law firms are grappling with at present. Ark Group’s Chief Strategy Officer Summit will address what law firms are doing strategically to survive, if not thrive in today’s shifting and constantly evolving legal business ecosystem. Attendees will hear from their peers concerning some of today’s strategic challenges of dealing with partners, messaging and culture—while ensuring an adherence to a primary strategic framework—balancing short-term decision-making with long-term goals. Who is actually driving firm-wide strategy—ensuring that the firm is moving in the direction of its stated goals? We are in the midst of an evolution of law firm management, client engagement, marketing, and growth strategy—largely fueled by disruption and other external forces driving change in the practice and business of law. What are the implications of such disruption on law firm strategic planning and execution? How is your firm dealing with a risk-adverse culture and overcoming inertia within the organization? How can you help your firm get to “the future” first?

8:30AM Registration & Refreshments

9:00AM Introductions: Conference Chairperson Melanie Heller, Vice President & General Manager, Bloomberg BNA

9:15AM KEYNOTE ADDRESS Why Strategies Fail… In this keynote address, author and speaker, David Parnell will address three fundamental characteristics that can (and do) create failure in the deployment of strategy. This session will provide practical advice, while at the same time share stories and anecdotes reflective of the broader conference themes addressed throughout the day.

David Parnell, Columnist/Forbes & American Lawyer Media and author of The Failing Law Firm: Symptoms and Remedies

10:00AM Where Do We Go From Here? Road Signs for Law Firm Strategic Planning A plan to get there, a map to follow, and a car to drive Building a plan from hundreds of voices Why law firm strategic planning really is different (why it’s unique,

what to watch out for, must do’s, don’t do’s, after the plan is done

Harry P. Trueheart III, Chairman Emeritus, Nixon Peabody LLP and CEO of TerraLex®

10:45AM Morning Coffee Break

11:15AM INTERACTIVE EXERCISE Strategy and Execution Exercise: Current Challenges Affecting the Law Firm C-Suite Winning in the market requires a good strategy that is well executed. But are your partners willing to bear the risk and sacrifice of a good long-term strategy? Often, busy, ahistorical partners are most attracted to the unrealistic strategy (e.g., “let’s focus on being an elite New York M&A and Capital Markets firm like Cravath”). Likewise, if the firm’s brain trust creates an excellent strategy supported by the partnership, does the firm possess the leadership, communication, and change management skills to successfully implement it? In this session, Prof. Henderson will set forth three decision points for the C-Suite of a fictional but realistic Am-Law 200 law firm (McKenna, Klein & Henderson, or MKH). Participants will make decisions as MKH managers. We will also collect anonymous data on how the challenges affecting MKH are mirrored inside participants’ own firms. That data will be shared with participants shortly after the session.

William D. Henderson, Professor of Law and Val Nolan Faculty Fellow, Indiana University Maurer School of Law

12:00PM Networking Luncheon

1:00PM PANEL DISCUSSION

Strategy Execution and Law Firm Leadership: Where The Rubber Meets The Road Why is strategy execution such a challenge? It’s no secret that regardless of how much time and effort is devoted to developing a strategic plan and no matter who within your firm is involved, most firms struggle with strategy execution such that a good portion of your well thought-out initiatives can fall short of their desired results. Nevertheless, we all recognize that when it comes to improving performance, effective implementation is critical. This esteemed panel of three (3) law firm leaders will share their experiences and what they have learned in serving as the strategic heads of their respective firms. We will also discuss what constitutes effective strategy execution, the art of

communicating strategy, dealing with a risk-adverse firm culture, and different ways to overcome inertia within an organization.

Michael B. Pollack, Managing Partner, ReedSmith Vincent A. Cino, Chairman, Jackson Lewis P.C. Gary D. LeClair, Founder, LeClairRyan Moderator: Patrick J. McKenna, McKenna Associates, Inc.

1:45PM ONE-ON-ONE DISCUSSION Defining the Role of Chief Strategy Officer: A Candid Discussion with a CSO from the Accounting Profession Much like the rise of the Pricing Director following the recession, a number of forward-thinking law firms have created the Chief Strategy Officer role in response to market pressures—from both clients as well as other (new) entrants into the legal competitive landscape. Working within the C-Suite, we can assume that the primary role of the CSO involves the facilitation of strategy formation and development, enabling a more nimble enterprise, capable of the sort of business transformation that many law firms are grappling with at present. In this candid one-on-one discussion, John Richter (CSO at accounting firm, CliftonLarson-Allen) will explain what it takes to be effective in the role, the challenges of dealing with partners, messaging and culture, while ensuring an adherence to a primary strategic framework—balancing short-term decision-making with long-term goals. This interview-style discussion will be led by Michael Pollack (a former CSO himself, and now Managing Partner at ReedSmith).

John P. Richter, Chief Strategy Officer, CliftonLarsonAllen LLP Michael B. Pollack, Managing Partner, ReedSmith

2:30PM Afternoon Coffee Break

3:00PM Strategy & Technology – Which is the cart? Which the horse? Law practice in the 20th century was technology-assisted: traditional ways of working were made faster, sometimes easier, and occasionally cheaper by adding a dash of technology to the soup kettle. In the 21st century, technology can enable new ways of working, new practices, new relationships with clients, and new business models. That’s all very exciting—maybe even innovative, disruptive, or otherwise buzzword-compliant—but how do firm strategists survey the landscape, analyze the opportunities, and collaborate with firm technology leaders to make good decisions? And at the same time keep the 20th-century stuff working reliably and securely?

Michael Mills, Co-Founder & Chief Strategy Officer, Neota Logic

3:45PM CLOSING DISCUSSION Strategies For Practice Group Growth As a firm leader you are not managing one homogenous firm so much as you are managing a portfolio of very different businesses. It follows then that there should be an explicitly stated expectation that each of the firm’s business units (i.e. practice groups) develop a written strategic plan for themselves. This plan should identify specifically how the members will work together to enhance visibility, build their skills, improve client service, secure better business and develop dominance in selected market niches. This session is intended to provide attendees with a framework for working with the members of your group (or groups that you support) to identify the best areas of emerging opportunity, assess the group’s position relative to competitors, and develop specific action plans for capitalizing on chosen areas.
