EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Deciding what to put on a law school homepage can be a difficult process. There are limits on available screen real estate, and decisions have to be made to define a site’s audience, selecting content to meet user needs. Homepage content decisions range from completely redesigning a site to simply adding one more headline to an existing section. When deciding to change something on the homepage, it is helpful to know what other schools have done to balance such things as student needs, faculty features, and event announcements. This Law School Website Design Study is created to capture a snapshot of law school homepages to document the current state of design in for these sites.

This report contains information about law school website homepages, incorporating data and images collected from 203 schools, primarily in the United States.

Section I: Website Design Gallery This includes a single screen shot of every law school homepage, together with details collected about page content. Technical information about site design includes details of the site source code, page elements, color, search features and display size. When available, information recorded for each school includes selected law school demographic data, as reported by the American Bar Association.

Section II: Website Element Studies This is a selective study of website elements, which highlights design features common across many sites. For this section, a representative sample of each website element is included for closer comparison of common content. Elements include law school logos, social networking content, site search boxes, stylized lists, slogans and slideshow galleries.

This report is intended for web designers, marketing professionals, web developers, deans, librarians, and anybody who makes decisions about how a law school is represented online.

INTRODUCTION

PROJECT BACKGROUND AND ORIGINS

Decisions about what to put on a law school homepage can be presented as a spectrum of options. At its most extreme, when completely redesigning a website, it is possible to start with blank slate, providing countless design options. Towards the other end of the spectrum, with an existing site design, there’s a frequent need to add “just one more thing” to the page. If this thing is a news headline, adding something new can simply displace something old. If there’s no defined place for your new content, content may have to be rearranged. At all points along this spectrum, a valid and important question to ask is “How do other people do it?”

This desire to compare content with others is precisely why I decided to write this report. It is one thing to make a conclusion by looking at five websites. It is an entirely different process to make a decision by looking at every website of a given type. In a variety of ways, this report seeks to answer the question “How do other people do it?” Answers to this question are provided primarily through visual evidence and basic technical indicators. There is little in this report about the process for presenting information on a law school home page. There is nothing in this report about the products or server technologies used to create a website.

WHAT’S IN THIS REPORT?

The starting list of schools for this report was taken from data provided by the American Bar Association’s Section of Legal Education and Admission to the Bar. This is their “2008 Official Guide to ABA-approved Law Schools”. Selective data is reproduced to present demographic data about schools to provide context for the content displayed. Factors such as student body size, program type, number of faculty, library collection or tuition could directly or indirectly influence website content needs. However, no inference is made regarding the relationship of this data to the homepage content.

In addition to capturing information about schools in the ABA spreadsheet, the report includes several non-ABA schools and online legal education organizations. For good measure, the homepages for Oxford and Cambridge are also included.

Data and images for this report were collected during February and March 2009, and I have tried hard to make sure it’s accurate. If you find any errors or omissions, please let me know.

WHAT’S MISSING FROM THIS REPORT?

There is nothing in this report from pages beyond a single homepage for each referenced school. A website homepage is only an institution’s front door. There are hundreds, if not thousands of design types and elements on other website pages. However, they are not included in this report.

Many homepages included in this report incorporate dynamic content, such as rotating photos, interactive navigation menus, galleries and slideshows. Because this is a printed report, it is impossible to include this well. A site that appears simplistic on paper may in fact be lively, interactive and very advanced. If you’re viewing this report online, each page in Section I includes a link to view the referenced site.

WILL THERE BE ANOTHER REPORT?

This may be the first of many reports on law school website designs. It may also be the only one. The present report was developed in order to document specific website data. This is meant to be a source book for anybody needing to make website design decisions at a law school. It took a lot of time to prepare the report, and much of the data was collected manually. This may be the only version of this report ever compiled in this format.

The content of this report is released under a Creative Commons license, so anybody is free to use the reported data to create something new from it.

DATA SOURCES AND DETAILS

All images and data found in this report were collected during February and March 2009. We have tried hard to record the data objectively and accurately. The purpose of this report is not to highlight good or bad design. Instead, this is meant as a resource for anybody involved in law school web design decisions.

Immediately before the design gallery is a sample report page illustrating the source of the report data and the location where it is recorded on each page.

GRAPHICAL DATA

HOMEPAGE SCREENSHOTS

Screenshots included in Section I were created primarily using an online service called BrowserShots (http://browsershots.org/). This is a distributed computing service where screenshot requests are sent to participating host computers around the world. BrowserShots lets you request screenshots using dozens of browser versions across four operating systems.

To gather screenshots, we collected images for seven browser versions, capturing them at a width of 1024 pixels. From each group of screenshots, we chose the best image available to portray each site accurately. In many cases, the best screenshot was not from a version of Internet Explorer running the Windows operating system.

HOMEPAGE DESIGN ELEMENTS

Homepage design elements in Section II were captured using screen capture technology viewing each site in either Internet Explorer or Firefox. Images were cropped to help highlight each element type. The elements in this section are meant to be representative and not comprehensive.

COLOR INFORMATION

To gather color information for this report, we used a tool called Colorzilla (http://www.colorzilla.com/firefox/). This tool analyzes a site’s Document Object Model and references any color definitions within it. If a color appears in the palette depicted on a page in this report, this merely means is that it is referenced by the site. It may be an accent color for just one element, or it could be the default text color for every element on the page. In addition, some colors in this report may not be used directly on a site’s homepage.



Colors are found primarily in one or more Cascading Style Sheet (CSS) files referenced in the home page source code. Some colors also appear in the site source code directly. Each color palette in this report displays a single color block for each color defined by the site. Design colors represented solely through website images are not listed.

SOURCE FOR LAW SCHOOL DEMOGRAPHICS AND STATISTICS

Law school demographic information is included from a spreadsheet distributed publicly by the American Bar Association’s Section of Legal Education and Admission to the Bar. This is their “2008 Official Guide to ABA-approved Law Schools”. No effort was made to correct this data. However, it presumed to be accurate. The spreadsheet used was downloaded in early February. All schools in this report appear alphabetically in the gallery that follows. Those lacking demographic or financial data are not in the ABA spreadsheet.

Following is a list of spreadsheet columns used for the data in the report. This data is released as three separate spreadsheet files, listed as Left Page 1 Data (LP1), Left Page 2 Data (LP2) and Right Page Data (RP).

SOURCE CODE ICON LEGEND

As part of this study, the underlying source code for each site was analyzed to look for certain code elements. This was determined by searching a copy of each site’s source code for certain text patterns. Following is an explanation of each source code icon referenced in this report.

Google Analytics tracking code is used on the homepage. Google Analytics is a popular tool to track statistics about website visitors and traffic.

Cascading Style Sheet (CSS) rules define at least one element on the site. CSS can be used to define typography, colors and site layout.

Flash-based content is used on the site. Flash can be used for a variety of site design elements, ranging from simple image rotation to interactive menus, videos or other rich content.

Computers can automatically detect a site’s RSS feed. The proper way to let accommodate automatic detection of an RSS feed is to reference the feed in the website document header with a reference such as: <link rel="alternate" type="application/rss+xml" …/>

JavaScript is referenced in the source code. JavaScript can be used for dynamic page interaction, browser detection, form controls, and sophisticated effects.

An HTML <table> tag appears in the website source code. HTML tables can be used to create the layout for an entire site, or they can be used to display individual site elements. A website profile showing this icon may still be created using CSS files for site layout.

Conditional comments specific to Internet Explorer appear in the source code. Conditional comments are a web design technique used to deliver different code to web browsers based on the version of Internet Explorer displaying a page.



ADDITIONAL SOURCE CODE INFORMATION

All data in this report is meant to reflect the state of a page at the time a screen shot was captured. Although many site designs and elements will change, this report should accurately reflect the content as it existed at the time report data was collected.

Page Title: This represents the text in the site source code that appears between the <title> tags. It is also the text that appears at the top of a website page when printed or viewed in a browser.

Design Type: This shows whether a site design is achieved through HTML tables, CSS or a combination of the two. If there was a single HTML table in the home page, the design type is listed as “Mixed CSS / HTML.”

Site Search: This shows whether there’s a search option listed on the home page. If there is, we tried our best to find out what kind of index it is. These include: Google Custom Search, Google Syndicated Search, Google Search Appliance, Yahoo! Search, Pico Search, and a very vague category “Custom Search.” This last category includes all other search engine types not listed separately. In some cases, it wasn’t obvious which search engine was used. It’s somewhat unscientific, but hopefully it’s useful.

Effective Display Width: This number is meant to describe the pixel width of the site’s primary defined content area. If a site is designed entirely with HTML tables, this value is derived from the width of the table containing the site content. For sites designed with CSS, we calculated this by examining the site structure, looking for a <div> section intended as a container. Some sites include a percentage width, while others can be styled with something called EM’s (which is the width of a capital M in the base font size).

TEXT-ONLY LAW SCHOOL LOGOS

One fundamental design element of any website is the brand name or logo for the site. While it is possible to style text on a website to display a logo with a specific color, size and typeface, using only text is difficult and unpredictable. All schools surveyed in this report display the logo as a graphic. Some text-only logos are very big, while others are much more subtle. STYLIZED LISTS

A convenient way to display information on any website is through the use of lists, often a simple arrangement of items in an unordered bulleted list. With the use of Cascading Style Sheets (CSS), there are numerous ways to style lists visually. Bullets can be squares or circles, and you can replace them with graphics, alternating row colors or other items to denote a list of similar items. SLIDESHOW GALLERIES

A growing trend for law school homepages is to include a gallery or slideshow of items so visitors can page through content with controls view a series of items in a fixed space on the site. Controls range from arrows to thumbnail picture icons to numbers. Following are a few examples of slideshow galleries. In displaying these, the underlying content is muted, with a red highlight indicating the graphical controls used to page through the items. The rest of each graphic represents the content area that is rotated when clicking on any of the slideshow controls.

UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA-BERKELEY On the Berkeley law homepage, three rotating stories appear in the lower-right corner of the page. Clicking any of the numbers rotates between the stories. The headline of each item serves as the link to a complete version of the featured story.

UNIVERSITY OF TENNESSEE

The homepage includes a set of photos of alumni and faculty, typically with a quote about the school and a link to a more complete biography.

A common feature many people look for in a website is a search engine specific to the site. If site navigation is not intuitive, or if somebody is looking for a specific item, a website’s search engine can be a quick way to find content. FAVORITES ICONS

A favorites icon is a small but important way for law schools to identify themselves to visitors. Web design professional Cameron Moll argues that the favorite icon is one of the most important design elements of a website. In modern Internet browsers, the favorites icon appears in the browser location bar and next to the page title in the browser tab.
