Film Series’ MissionIn its sixth season at the Ossining Public Library, the monthly Thursday evening draws between 15-25 regular participants. It is one of the most popular series at the library. Together we watch a film and afterwards with a moderator, discuss the legal issues presented in the film.

The series’ mission is to get the community to think about relevant legal issues that may or may not affect them. We select only great cinema, past and present.

about relevant political and/or legal issues that may or may not involve them

• For an audience to grow in diversity• To get all participants involved in discussion• To create a forum where different opinions can be

freely and respectively expressed• To take a poll on the legal issue at the end of the

discussion

What follows are some of our films and a clue to their discussions.

This was one of our most popular evenings.

Engaging an attorney or investment professional to talk about regulations in securities trading is a great way to provide exposure.

Engaging local authors in the discussion is a great idea to grow a crowd.

The state of Tennessee, for example, just made the teaching of “intelligent design” legal.

It is more fun when issues are relevant – especially when tied to such great films as this one. (Nominated four times for an Academy and uses real trial transcripts)

This is a wonderful opportunity for family lawyers to talk about “no-fault” divorce and what it means.

Here, an environmental activist and/or attorney may be interested in moderating.

Excellent opportunity for an employment lawyer to discuss work place issues – and the new role of social media in the workplace.

Finally, some humor.

This is actually a great film about the importance of expert witness testimony.

Spot the legal issue!

This film came at the end of one of our seasons. We were surprised by many of the observations.
