WHY CHOOSE CANTURF?

PREPARING YOUR SITE

It is essential to the success of yourCanturf lawn that the site is properlyprepared. The following steps should betaken before ordering your Canturf.

1 Clear the area of existing lawn or weedsby spraying with a Glyphosate basedherbicide or by chipping the area. Some persistent weeds may needtwo applications.

2 Cultivate or Rotory Hoe to a depth of 150 mm. Preparing a deep base is critically important to achieving a healthy and deep rooting lawn. It is important to incorporate Gypsum and lime at this stage.

The Gypsum will help to break upthe soil and the lime will help reduceacidity. These can be applied at a rateof 200 grams per square metre. Alsoconsider adding organic matter such aswell composted manure to boost waterretention and encourage worm andmicrobial activity.

3 Topsoil—if your soil is inadequate,such as clay soil, it is essential thata high quality sandy loam topsoilbe incorporated into the 150 mmcultivated base. On flat areas,where possible, provide a gentleslope for drainage. An in-groundwatering system will greatly assistthe maintenance of any lawn and ifrequired should be incorporated atthis stage.

4 Rake and smooth the soil, removingany rocks, roots and clods. At thisstage the soil should be at the finalrequired lawn level. Bring the soilup to the same height as any pavingor concreting around the area. Canturfhas approximately 5 mm of soiland further settling in the soil willaccommodate the thickness of the turf.At the final leveling make sure the soilis smooth and of a fine texture.

5 Measure the area of your plannedlawn with a tape measure. Canturf is ordered in square metres.

CALCULATING YOURLAWN AREA

Whatever your lawn shape, if you candivide it up into the shapes pictured (orvery close to these shapes) the formulaswill make estimating your total lawnarea easy.

When placing your order, keep in mindthat it’s generally not a bad idea to get afew spare rolls, just to be sure you don’trun out while laying your turf.

Each roll of Canturf weighs approximately 12 kg for ease of handling.

Warm season or Cool season?

We recommend you choose one of our Cool Season varieties as they are best suited to our colder climatic conditions. Cool Season Grasses will stay greenerall year round as they are frost tolerant. Because they have no runners they won’t invade your garden beds and paths.

Cool season Canturf is available in blends which are ideally suited to the home garden, Canberra Blend’ and ‘Canberra Blend with Clover’.

Both turf types are a blend of Tall Fescue and Kentucky Bluegrass which are ideal for a harsh cool climate.While ‘Canberra Blend’ is a mix of the two, ‘Canberra Blend with Clover’ also has O’Connor’s Strawberry Clover incorporated. This fine leaf clover is soft underfoot, evergreen and hard wearing. It will add nitrogen to your soil and can help deter scarab grubs and can cover bare patches effectively.

Penturf is also available. It is a fine textured lawn. Its high quality has made it the turf of choice where high level presentation is essential such as public buildings. It requires high maintenance, so we don't usually recommend it for most residential areas

.

Warm season Canturf such as Buffalo and Couch are also available. Warm season varieties tend to require less water and because they have runners, will self repair but may invade your garden beds and paths.

Although these varieties can be grown in our cooler climate, warm season lawn will go dormant in winter and brown off from the effects of frost.

HINTS FOR LAYINGYOUR CANTURF

1 Canturf is a perishable product. Installyour turf as soon as possible afterdelivery to avoid overheating.

2 Begin laying Canturf along the longestand straightest edge of your yard, suchas the driveway or footpath, and try tolay across the slope.

3 Turf should be laid in a staggeredpattern, just like bricks and butt edgesand ends against each other tightlywithout stretching.

4 Do not leave gaps or overlap the rollsand use a sharp knife to cut the rollsand trim corners.

5 Plug any gaps with Canturf and avoidusing small strips of Canturf on outeredges as they will not retain moisture.

6 After laying a few rolls, tamp them downto remove air pockets and have a smallsprinkler to begin watering as you go.

Our forks require 2.5m width and 3m heightfor access. If access to your site is restricted our skilled drivers will place the turf as close to your site that is practical and safe.

Regular watering encourages the roots of your lawn to grow deeply into the soil, enabling the roots to source all the available water and nutrients within your soil structure.

Your new lawn should be mowed for thefirst time about two weeks after laying oras soon as the Canturf reaches 75 mm inheight. Ideally your cold season lawn should be kept at a height of 50 mm (60 mm in summer). Mowing too short will expose the base of the plant to weather and traffic. Warm season lawns can be mowed shorter than cool season lawns. Please refer to the graph below for mowing heights for your chosen lawn.

Regular watering encourages the roots of your lawn to grow deeply into the soil, enabling the roots to source all the available water and nutrients within your soil structure.
