Section 1 – Budget Planning and Forecasting
1.1 – Network Remediation Project SGA Financial Tracking (Transition from Verizon to AT&T)
Over the course of a year the financial costs for WAN circuits for this client changed significantly due to a large order from AT&T of circuits which replaced Verizon circuits. It was important to have a mechanism, as demonstrated herein to project and track the monthly variance in circuit costs for each carrier and how these totals affected the accuracy of the monthly SGA budget projections. Attached are the files for a moment in time during this project. These files demonstrate the methodology for my analysis that provides insight into how I was able to advise a client to successfully meet their targets. All specific details, such as location information and budget amount have been removed to protect a client’s data. Due to the actual budget numbers being removed, it is important to note that the Verizon costs were being subtracted from SGA and the AT&T added. From the charts below however it can be seen that this was a fairly large financial shift. To be successful, we had to meet the client’s target of allowed 1% budget variance. It was therefore extremely important that no sites or circuits were left out. Equally important was that the timeline was accurate in our projections for circuit cancellations and circuit turn-ups. (See Attachment 1.1.1)

1.3 – Budget Reduction Opportunities
I was required to perform extensive research to locate all the non-core network devices in order to complete the physical network diagrams for a client. Historic documentation was poor and very little of the device locations were known prior to this effort outside of the core network at each site. Through this research process I was able to determine the core function for each access switch. This valuable information provided me the insight I needed to make the appropriate recommendations for a client for which access switches should be considered critical. With this information they were able to re-negotiate the price of support from another vendor for these non-critical devices. Below figure 2.1.1 are the results from my monthly Vendor billing review in December 2014 and the potential cost savings for my monitoring recommendations for moving the non-critical switches. The actual savings are represented as a flat dollar amount and not as a percentage of budget so in this instance I will include them.

The below document was prepared for a client to review industry standards for best practices for how to properly document and design their corporate infrastructure and network architecture. See Attachment 3.1.1
3.2 – Equipment EOL Roadmap
The attached document was prepared on behalf of a client. The requirements were to build an inventory for all network devices, list the specific model information and research the end of life cycle as per the manufactures published date. The cost for each equivalent device was then plugged in to a formula to work out how much a replacement device would cost per year that the device reached its end of life. Assuming no sparing strategy was put in place these costs were then spread over 5 years to determine worst case scenario impact. The actual costs

Section 4 – Business Case – New Technology
4.1 – Application-aware Network Performance Management Software
The below business case is for the purchase of a new network appliance that would be a new technology providing new capabilities of advanced traffic insight for a client. The business case I made included an overview of the technology, with expected benefits, information about the design of the proposed installation and use cases from existing trials. I also provided a Net present value calculation to cover the cost potential in detail for investing in this solution as well as a comparison of what this tool offers as compared to other similar technologies. See Attachment 4.1.1
Section 5 – Project Management
5.1 – Network Remediation Project
The attached is the project plan and presentation are files for a network remediation project that successfully remediated congestion on over 30 problem circuits. The project was broken up into short term, near term and long term objectives. See Attachment 5.1.1
5.2 – VLAN Standardization Project
The files are part of the project VLAN standardization. Cadence for these updates are as follows: A weekly agenda is sent out Friday morning with topics being covered in a weekly meeting set on Monday Afternoon. Monday evening the weekly minutes are sent out. Wednesday EOB a weekly update for the project and a weekly project rationalization is sent out to management for review. See Attachment 5.2.1

7.1 – Vendor Performance Review
The below vendor performance review was part of an ongoing process I was part of with the Client review the strategic vendors work to identify both strengths as well, areas where there were opportunities for improvement. These meetings also provided us an opportunity to identify any major or any ongoing performance issues that needed addressing prior to the quarterly meetings. The goal was to proactively manage the relationship with the vendor and get ahead of issues before they became serious problems. The specific Vendor review attached was conducted with myself and one of the client’s telecoms coordinator. See Attachment 7.1.1
7.2 – Vendor Quarterly Performance Review
I sat in on the quarterly vendor performance meetings to address some of the ongoing performance issues. The end results from these meetings were very positive. The specific issues that required remediation were resolved to the customer’s satisfaction. See Attachment 7.2.1

8.2 – CIO Newsletters
The below text is a sample from a monthly CIO newsletter. The primary audience for these newsletters was upper management, they were however published via monthly email blast to the entire company and also uploaded to the IT SharePoint.
XXXX Network Enhancements:
• Internet Path Migration: All internet and ICE network traffic at XXXX is being migrated to XXXX circuit this Saturday March 15th at 7:00 PM CST. Network and Security team resources are coordinating closely to ensure a successful activation. Currently, all XXXX traffic currently traverses the same primary circuit. XXXX will hopefully provide improved performance, and it will add a new disaster recovery route for XXXX traffic at the corporate office. After the migration the primary XXXX XXXX XXXX.
• Wireless LAN: On Tuesday March 4th the 12th floor wireless AP configurations were changed to support the higher frequency bands. These new settings should alleviate signal interference and crosstalk with nearby electronics. A plan is being prepared for a more extensive roll-out.
• Floor Closet Switch OS Upgrades: The Cisco IOS software on the dual supervisor switches located in the XXXX and XXXX closets was successfully upgraded on Tuesday March 4th. XXXX floor switches are now taking advantage of these new standardizations. Next up are the XXXX switches, tentatively scheduled for the week of March 17th.
Telecom Circuit Improvements:
• XXXX Telecom Infrastructure Upgrades: Intermittent link errors were recently identified on XXXX WAN circuits. The LEC was engaged and two new loops were installed on Friday March 7th. These new loops are being extensively tested, and once this testing is complete all network traffic will be migrated to the new infrastructure and the existing circuits will be retired. A concurrent effort to explore a new carrier supported extended demark is also ongoing.
• XXXX AT&T Configuration Standardization: The Network team previously identified non-standard network configurations in the AT&T edge network. This was not impacting the circuit, which has remained up and functioning as expected. A modification to the configurations was completed to align them to the XXXX Standards.
F5 Load Balancer Deployment: The previously installed F5 load balancer was added to the production XXXX network in XXXX on Tuesday March 4th. This device replaces the Cisco ACE products. Application migration planning is now underway. This next step will include configuring and integrating the Riverbed Steelhead with the F5 and Active Directory to allow full MS Exchange mail optimization across the Calpine WAN.
XXXX Network Extension: The network is being extended at XXXX to support end users in the plants outage trailers. On Friday March 7th a new workgroup switch was deployed in the XXXX Trailer and cabling was run from this switch to a new wireless AP in the adjacent XXXX trailer. To add these devices to the network, copper infrastructure will be installed by the plant between the Admin building and the new switch in the XXXX trailer.
Network Improvements: XXXX employs a sparing/modularity approach as part of the network equipment life cycle. This involves keeping an inventory of spare devices and/or parts. Due to the age and longevity of many secondary routers in the fleet this approach includes replacing the fan tray components to extend these devices lifespan. Over the last two weeks the fan tray was replaced on the secondary router at XXXX. Next on the schedule is: XXXX, XXXX and XXXX.

9.1 – NASA Technology Brief
The below Technology brief / expert overview I wrote was published in NASA Tech Briefs Insider magazine back in 2005. The specific technology reviewed is an automated soil sampling device for agricultural use. Also included is the original NASA SBIR proposal written by the scientists that developed this technology. The function and purpose of this brief was to drive interest in Angel investors or Venture capitalists to request additional information on the technology, which we would also write up and host in our technology database. See Attachment 9.1.1
9.2 – Network Standards Documentation
The below document was prepared completely by Pen To Pad, with the latest available standards and provided to a client who in turn published this as official departmental policy. It is included here as a sampling of my work. See Attachment 9.2.1
Additional standards documentation were also prepared for this client for Network Cabling standards, Plant and Remote Site IP Addressing and VLAN, Plant and Remote Site WAN connectivity, Router and Switch Configuration Standards and Voice Network Standards.

As described previously, extensive research was required to locate all the non-core network devices in order to complete the physical network diagrams for a client. Some of the sites I was able to visit and perform the network As-built myself. For these I was not able to visit I created a network field packet and a training series to assist the in-house staff in gathering the requirements. Attached below is the field packet which was provided for their use. See Attachment 9.4.1
9.5 – RCA Document
The below RCA is one of many, included as a sample. These documents were not typically required for all Priority One tickets, however, some select instances required this sort of analysis. See Attachment 9.5.1
9.6 – Connectivity Standards Documentation
The attached connectivity standards presentation describes in detail available WAN circuit connectivity types, typical pricing and describes the difference between business class and residential internet services. See Attachment 9.6.1

The attached network diagram illustrates a typical physical layout diagram. It is modeled after the physical layout of a site so a building to the east in the real world would also be to the east in the diagram. This is designed to provide better and more detailed information quickly to those troubleshooting a device remote. See Attachment 10.1.1

Section 1 – Information
1.1 – Purpose
To provide reliable services for our business while reducing costs, it is important to maintain a clear understanding of the dependencies between our applications and network, be alerted to issues before business is impacted, and accelerate time-to-repair where possible. Riverbed Cascade performance management tool is the solution to address these challenges. Here’s how.
1.2 – Features
Cascade collects flow data from network devices and integrates into application data from packets to provide a complete view of application and network performance. Before users call help desk to complain, Cascade’s analytics engine automatically baseline, analyze and alert on changes in performance to provide early warnings to problems. Additionally, Cascade’s seamless drill down from dashboard to application analysis streamlines troubleshooting process and accelerates problem resolution. Key features:
Map each application’s dependency on the network easily with discovery wizard
Analyze system metrics and application paths throughout the network
Track dozens of performance metrics and build a historical baseline
Response time analysis and latency metrics allow for granular understanding
Correlate traffic based analysis with device health information and metrics
Automatically alert administrators of performance problems before users call

The Cascade suite consists of a single Profiler, Gateway and multiple Shark packet capture appliances. The Profiler is the analytical engine, and the Gateway collects information sent by the Shark packet sniffers and netflow sources across the network, including data from Riverbed Steelhead optimization appliances. Lastly, Cascade Pilot is a packet capture analytic reporting tool, which is designed to improve the speed and efficiency of the packet analysis process.

ISSUE - VLAN Network Segmentation Inconsistently Implemented: Calpine has published networking VLAN standards which adhere to industry best practices, however these standards are currently inconsistently applied across all sites. COMMENTS – XXXXX, has brought up a concern that by not having an established date to migrate all devices from old VLANs to the new VLANs we are adding complexity to the site as well, Xerox does not consider this completely standardized. Per their request we will also be adding a column/ check box to the VLAN review for whether all device discrepancies have been completed / migrated at each site.

NETWORK - IOP STANDARDS
1. Add the standard set of VLANs to the core switches (VLAN, X, X,X, X, XX, X, X, DCS VLAN’s X, X, X, X etc.), if a plant does not need say GE VLAN X, no need to configure VLAN X at that site.
2. The leaf switches need not be configured for all VLAN’s, they should be configured with VLAN’s for devices going on the switch, if additional devices get added on a different VLAN we can configure them at that time.
3. We configure firewalls with only the needed VLAN’s for devices which will be behind the firewall (firewall configurations should have the bare minimum configurations for security reasons).

SITE VISIT CHECKLIST
PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT 1: Document network related demark information, network closets, network cabinets, high voltage protection,
floor network ports, cabling, and roof access for 4G antennae installation in the admin bldg. in preparation for upcoming installation.
2. Determine the exact locations of LAN, WLAN, WAN devices throughout site and document locations (Building / Room / Rack). Document all network devices asset tag, serial no., model no. IP address and host name.
3. Locate and review inter-building connections to other parts of the plant and document their connectivity type.
4. Review network/telecom closets in secondary buildings and also ensure that there is adequate rack space and power available for new Calpine gear.
5. Identify key separation between corporate and plant control portion of the network
6. Identify key applications/systems/services requiring external inbound and/or outbound connectivity, including AMS Servers, RTU, Physical security servers and camera.
7. Photograph all network devices, rooms and racks using a retraceable perspective for transition planning and Calpine documentation
8. Review network setup project plan with plant management and obtain plant permission to allow carrier visits for pre-install assessment and installation along with Calpine follow-up visit for turn-up.
