9GA COMMUNITY MEETING

By Jasmitila Duran 9GA hosted a community meet-ing this week where co-leaders Mr. Cote and Mr. Heckstall ad-dressed the 9GA class and high-lighted student’s achievements. During this meeting they honored students who achieved honor roll and provided feedback and sup-

ports to motivate other students to reach their goals for second term. The 9GA student co-presi-dents Michael Jimenez and Gen-esis Cumba also addressed the class and shared updates on what they are currently working on. They also took the opportunity to thank their administrators for

the strong bond they’ve cultivat-ed with the team. They thanked them for being supportive, help-ing them voice their opinions and for including them in decision making. Students left the meeting feeling hopefully and inspired for Term Two!

SEWING CLASS IN 9GABy Jasmitila Duran 9GA is excited to announce its first-ever sewing class! This week students learned how to identify

different types of fabrics and how to sew straight lines. They can tell you what the hand wheel does and what the presser foot does.

Students are really excited to learn how to create their own designs and showcase their individual creativity!

AMBASSADOR PROGRAM HELPS INT STUDENTS TRANSITION

The LHS Student Ambassador Program is underway. The role of the Ambassador Program is to create a bridge between the International High School and the upper school to ensure a smooth transition experience for students when they transition into their new schools. Former International School students now

enrolled in the upper school will act as Ambassadors for current International students who will likely be transferring next year. This program will allow former International students to grow as mentors and peer leaders and aid in the socio-emotional issues that arise from transitioning to Upper School Academies. Am-

bassadors will be identified by the upper schools and trained by the International School Transi-tional Team. The team is chaired by International School assistant principal BarriAnn Alonzo, and includes Principal Gerry Acosta, Carlos Cordero, Nicolette Filimon, Christi Cartwright, Nicole St. Clair and Laurie Hartwick.

The official name is Robert P. Fitzgerald Field at Lawrence’s Veteran’s Memorial Stadium. Damaged during a community event several weeks ago, the field has been under repairs by NET Sports Group of Saco, Maine. The new field turf was rolled out this past week. “We hope to be able

to play the Thanksgiving football game against Central Catholic at the stadium” said athletics director Jim Licciardi. “We are excited about the new turf, which feature blue end zones with the word ‘Lancer’ and a Lancer Logo at mid-field.” An insurance policy will cover the costs of repairing

the field, which is owned by the city of Lawrence and used by Lancer football, field hockey, soccer and track, as well as by Special Olympics, Central Catho-lic sports, youth sports, and many community organizations.

This is the question of the ages. Learning Independence for Everyday (LIFE), formerly Law-rence Prep and the Life Skills pro-grams, serve to develop life and vocational skills for the students in the program. Most staff and students think that the LIFE program only makes cookies, brown-ies, cupcakes, popcorn, salad, soup, paninis, subs and sell coffee. Oh, these students do so much more! Student schedules are similar to the state vocational schools with one week of academics followed by one week of career training. When students finish their academ-ic week they are in the community making connections and working every single day. Stu-dents in grades 9 and 10 are working feverishly in the culinary program which is the most visible on campus. Students in grades 11 and beyond are working in the com-munity. LIFE students work at Lowell Animal Shelter, Lazarus House, Lawrence Senior Center, Lawrence General Hospital, Kettle Pizza, Ironstone Farm Therapeutic Horseback Riding, Dairy Queen, Lawrence Public Library, New Balance and most recently at Hab-itat for Humanity and the Re-Store operated by Habitat for Humanity. New job sites are being developed monthly. LIFE students are learning how

to navigate the work of work so when they leave Lawrence High School they truly are career ready. This past year, the LIFE program partnered with Northern Essex Community College which offers

free college courses to the students in the program. Students earn a work stipend for the work they complete which is totally funded by the culinary program. Every time a student or staff purchases an item they are supporting the career education of the students in the LIFE pro-gram. Additionally, the program

has been able to save enough money from the sales of the items produced in the culinary program that the program has been able to purchase a handicap accessible van. So remember the next time

that you order a salad, a soup or purchase a cookie the money goes to a good cause. Our goal is to raise enough additional money this year to fund an amazing end of the year celebration and to pur-chase a second handicap accessible van.

What is LIFE?

MUSIC MURALYou may have noticed a new mural taking shape on first-floor Main Street, between ENLACE and 9GA. Over the last several weeks, students of Mr. Allshouse’s mural class in the Upper School Acad-emy have been developing mural celebrating musicians. Here is their artist’s statement: “All of these musicians have gone through struggles in life to get

where they are today. It takes a lot of effort and hard work to get where you want to be in life; you have to work through good and bad outcomes. These musicians started small, faced obstacles and worked hard. They have made music to express things they have gone through and they express themselves through their music. Don't let anyone ever convince

you that you won't amount to any-thing, look how far these artists have come. No matter how much time things take and no matter how hard things may be, always be determined and great.”

MUSIC TEACHERS WIN NATIONAL AWARD

Congratulations to 10GA’s Ryan Solero and 9GA’s Emmanuel To-ledo who were among the twenty winners of the National #Mu-sicEdIdol competition. They were selected to attend the National Association for Music Education (NAfME) Conference in Tex-as over the weekend. Only five winners received this extra hon-or. Each winner received $1,000 for their music programs. After

attending the conference, Solero said, “In three days, I have met some amazing educators, been to some incredible presentations, and have had the time of my life. With the grant money awarded, I’ll be able to purchase percussion equipment for the 10GA Band.” Toledo added, “This past weekend at NAfME was an opportunity to take a step back and feel proud of our students in 9GA Band, 10GA

Band, and LHS Music as a whole. Students are excited to see that their hard work and passion is being recognized and rewarded on a national level. Thank you to the LHS community for support-ing our music students!” Pictured are Solero and Toledo with the President of NAfME and other winners.

9GA’s World Studies showcase event at the El Taller Café and Bookstore on Essex Street was a huge success! Students in the World Studies class had just finished up a six-week unit on the Holocaust and presented remembrance speeches as an end-of-unit performance task. The top speech writers in each cohort were invited to present in front of family, friends and

faculty. Students and families left feeling proud, confident and better able to see and feel the connection between hard work and achievement. Spe-cial thanks to all our student orators, World Studies teach-ers, and administrators who showed up that night and worked behind the scenes to make this happen!

If you make your way through the “A” building, down Lancer Way, and then to the hallway that leads past the locker and fitness rooms, you’ll see a new mural taking shape. Developed and implemented by students of Mr. Allshouse’s mural classes in the Upper School Academy, the mural celebrates athletes and the power of overcoming obstacles. Here is the Artist’s Statement developed

by the students: “All of these athletes have gone through some type of struggle in order to get where they are today. From being told they weren’t good enough to devastating injuries, they’ve all had obstacles and bar-riers that they once thought were unbreakable. Through persever-ance and determination, they’ve become the top athletes ogf today. Both students and athletes here at

Lawrence High should be able to dream big and know that anything is possible, no matter how difficult times may get. Be inspired. Be determined. Be great.” Here is a link to a video about the project: https://drive.google.com/open?id=0BxbS9C8bfkX-Q3B3d-FNmc3FBbWM

On Friday, October 28, Law-rence High School played host to the third annual annual Robert Frost Poetry Festival Community Read. Coordinated by the Frost Foundation, and led by director emeritus Mark Schorr, the event invited community leaders to read and discuss their favorite poem. Readers included PFA junior Lei-da Mane and BMF junior James Mora, as well as 10GA ELA teach-er Yulissa Nuñez. Mane read an

original poem she wrote about her brother, and Mora read a poem about his names, and how they identify him as Dominican-Amer-ican. Nuñez read a poem called “I Teach” by the poet Se7en. LHS grad and acting director of the Lawrence Public Library Jessica Valentin (LHS ’05) read her fa-vorite poem, “Still I Rise” by Maya Angelou. Other readers included LHS graduate Marilyn Medina of New Balance, Amita Kelly of

the Lawrence History Center, and “Kenadine”, the husband-and-wife duo who serve as poets laureate of North Andover. Robert Frost was graduated from Lawrence High School in 1892, where he served as co-valedictorian along with his future wife, Elinor White. The winner of four Pulitzer prizes for poetry, he is widely regarded as America’s favorite poet.

ONE GOAL GIVES STUDENTS

A PLACE TO GROW

In the words of Celinette Valentin, “One Goal shows us the reality of the process to get into college.” This year Lawrence High School is piloting a program called One Goal with two sections of Grade 11 students. A national non-profit with sites in Chicago, Houston, Atlanta, Massachusetts and New York, One Goal works with high school students to accomplish the One Goal of college graduation. Each cohort is comprised of 25-30 students. It focuses on underserved students those with a 2.7 average GPA. It’s a three-year model, two years of a credit-bearing class in high school and one year on coaching through the first year of

college. In the words of One Goal Program Director Maureen Santia-go, “The purpose of One Goal is to give meaning and focus to getting into college.”One Goal follows a comprehensive curriculum focused on building academic and non-cognitive skills. It follows data and involves coach-ing. Non-cognitive goals include developing the skills and mindsets needed to graduate college. The first year includes on-line ACT & SAT Prep, goal setting and action planning, writing personal state-ments, and a summer opportunity search. In their second year stu-dents apply to seven colleges and learn about financial aid. In their

third year students are coached through freshman year of college. So far the program has proven to be a hit with students. Chris Cheuveret said, “It’s an opportu-nity to improve ourselves to go to college. Ms. Santiago tells us how it’s going to be like.” Stevenson Theosmy added, “We get an early understanding of the expectations and leadership skills.” The social and emotional support has also proven critical, as articulated by Gigi Gonzalez: “This class gives us a space to feel safe and open with other people who will be with us into college.”
