WEDDIN MOUNTAIN CHALLENGE 2018During week 9, from 19-21 September, our Year 9 students will take part in the annual Weddin Mountain Challenge. This year however, we are hoping to make a few changes and we are very excited to be inviting 20 students from Sir Joseph Banks High School, our partner school in Revesby, to join us. The students from Sir Joseph Banks come from a diverse range of cultural backgrounds and it will be a wonderful opportunity for our students to make some new friends and connections. This means that our program will be slightly different to that which we have followed in the past. We will camp out at the mountains on the Wednesday night and walk over the mountain on Thursday, from Ben Hall’s cave to Holy Camp Road, returning to school in the afternoon for showers and a freshen up before dinner at school and evening activities. Students will spend Thursday night sleeping at the school before heading out for a farm visit on Friday morning. With planning well underway, and to assist with this process, we would like to ask if there are any farmers in our community that may be shearing at this time and would be happy to host a visit from our ‘city cousins’. It will be a great opportunity for us to showcase the Weddin Shire and the advantages of living in a regional area. We would also like to invite Year 9 parents to join us out at the mountains for both, or either, the camping and walk over the mountain. It is always lots of fun and at this time of the year we are generally lucky with the weather. More information will follow as we finalise details over the next few weeks. If anyone can assist with the farm visit, or any Year 9 parents would like to book in for the camping, please contact Nicola Mitton at school, 6343 1390.

Principal’s ReportState athleticsCongratulations to the students who have qualified for the State Athletic Carnival. Great work! Thank you to all the students that attended the Western Region Athletics Carnival and did their best. Good luck to our school representatives at the state carnival later this year. See results in this issue.Education Week assemblyThursday saw us celebrate our school and Education Week. At our assembly we recognised some of the many people that make learning great at THLHS. There are probably thousands of local people who in a small or large way support and make our school a great place to learn. This year’s Education Week theme, Today’s Schools – Creating Tomorrow’s World reminds us all that we are equipping young people with the skills and capabilities they need to thrive in a rapidly changing world. It was great to hear about past student Bronte Enright’s learning journey and we thank her for sharing her work experience with Qantas as well as staying after the assembly to work with our students in a careers class. Thank you to those recognised at today’s assembly – people who influence and build the leaders and learners of tomorrow.

NAIDOC DayThank you to all the staff, students, parents and community members that helped with the running of our NAIDOC Day celebration last Friday. It was the very first performance by our newly formed Aboriginal boys dance group who then led us all in a traditional dance. Our vision is to expand the group over the coming twelve months to one that represents all schools and the community. Great to have St Joseph’s, Grenfell Public and Grenfell Preschool visit us on the day. There was much for students to learn about including flag-raising, smoking ceremony, boomerang throwing, face painting, dance, Johnny cakes, bush tucker and Aboriginal art. Thank you to our organisers and parents, Chad White, Bec Shepherd, Uncle Dick, Troy Mehrton, Terry Carroll, Janine Richards, Julie Ferguson, Shirley King, Steve and Angela Hundy, Jillian Reidy, Jenny Bell, Brett Harris and our Indigenous students for organising and creating a successful day. We are looking to expand on the activities for 2019, building towards an event that the whole town can share with us.

School’s Netball CupOur Year 8 and 10 boys school’s cup netball teams enjoyed the chilly second round of competition in Orange last Wednesday. Our Year 8 boys made the final and Year 10 boys tried hard and played well. Great to see the boys enjoying themselves, being active and trying new sports. Well done!

Junior judging workshop and competitionStage 5 Animal Husbandry students travelled to Eugowra last Thursday with growth mindsets to learn as part of the junior judging workshop. On the day, the students participated in a junior judging competition. Well done to all students who participated and to Stephanie Davies, fourth place in Meat Sheep Judging and Josh Carpenter, fourth in Wool Judging out of 115 competitors. Thank you to Mrs Baker for organising this great learning opportunity.VET work placementYear 11 VET students are on work placement this week as part of their studies. Thank you to all the local employers who support our students on work placement throughout the year. Employers helping out this week include Mr Chris Dixon, Grenfell Multi-purpose Health Service and Grenfell Preschool and Long Day Care Centre.Next week: • Year 11 interviews will be conducted with Ms McCulloch

and Ms Crossley to discuss NESA entries, check how students are going, determine subjects completed, review subjects for 2019 and review plans for beyond 2019.

• Year 10 subject selection night – Wednesday 15 August, 7 pm. It is an important time for Year 10 to consider subjects they wish to study in years 11 and 12. This will be followed by the Year 10 subject expo on Thursday where students find out more about subjects from our current Year 11 or 12 students.

• Verto information session – Friday 17 August; a talk with Year 12 about next steps including apprenticeship, employment and training needs.

STUDY SKILLS TIP FOR AUGUSTSome students are naturally able to find a good balance between all the facets of their life: schoolwork, sports, activities, friends, family, technology and all of the other aspects of life that keep us busy from when we wake to when we sleep.Other students struggle to fit their schoolwork in during the evenings and weekend. Some students come home after school and just sort of ‘wait’ until they feel like working; and what happens is that they never feel like it so they just don’t get started! Some students start work not long after they get home, but they drag their work out over the whole night doing work in front of the TV, or the computer or their phone. It takes them the whole night, but they hardly get any work done and they don’t feel like they have had a break at all.A much more effective way to approach home study each evening is to keep your school work and your personal life separate. Don’t do your work in front of the TV, don’t do it while on social network sites or while using messenger apps. Instead, work in 20-30 minute blocks of time and during this time make the conscious choice to actually remove or turn off things that are going to distract you. As it is only for a short block of time, it is bearable. Train yourself to have breaks from your distractions for the blocks of time when you do schoolwork. By doing this you will learn to really focus and concentrate on what you are doing for a block of time. You will be amazed at how much work you get done and how productive you are during this time. Then at the end of that half hour period you have a proper break and really enjoy your free time. You can find special software for blocking distractions on computers and phones in the Dealing with Distractions unit on www.studyskillshandbook.com.auOur school’s subscription details to this online study skills website for high school students are –www.studyskillshandbook.com.auUsername: THLHSPassword: 49success

All THLHS Year 11 and 12 students have a free 30 day trial of the Atomi website. Login details have been sent to students @education.nsw.gov.au email address.

WELL-BEING CORNER“Life isn’t about finding yourself, it’s about creating yourself”. George Bernard ShawTrying to find yourself is like looking for your sunglasses when they’re on top of your head; they were never lost in the first place and neither are you! Perhaps you could think of yourself in terms of raw materials; body, brain, ears, mouth, eyes, strength, skills, potential. Imagine that you are an artist, working with those raw materials to create something entirely new and wonderful – a painting, a sculpture … Now see the final product in your mind. What kind of self can you create?

TODAYI’ll take a step toward creating myself.
