Congratulations to Clare Hunt. She has been selected for the Australian U19s Matilda football team that heads off to Myanmar this week. They will be playing in the qualifying rounds for the World Cup to be held next year. This is a fantastic achievement and we will all be listening out for how the team plays. Have a great trip Clare. Some of our students were involved in great holiday activities. Kira Gibson and Jessica Pereira returned to the Youth Parliament, this time with their committees presenting motions on their issues. The debates were held in the Legislative Council of the NSW Parliament, so it was a very authentic experience. Jessica was the first speaker on the opening day presenting a motion on mental health with a focus on the rural aspect. The motion was passed unanimously. Likewise, Kira’s motion was passed unanimously that looked at how LGBTI students could be supported in educational settings. Jessica and Kira both said it was an amazing experience; being involved in the political process, meeting other people including the NSW Governor General and building their confidence and public speaking skills. Kate Robinson and Yongyang Xia were invited to attend another women in engineering program, this time at the University of Technology Sydney. They both have a clear picture of the many pathways that engineering provides. Charlotte Simpson was invited to attend the HSC Intensive Studio Practice course run by the National Art School in Sydney. Charlotte’s learning was focused on drawing life forms. She said it was intensive: six hours a day of drawing where she learnt so much. Year 6 students from Greenethorpe, Caragabal and Grenfell public schools and St Joseph’s started their secondary learning this week. On Wednesday they came for their first experience of learning science from science teachers in science laboratories. They were enthusiastically involved in measuring temperatures and weighing objects as they solved some scientific problems. There were lots of questions about high school and excitement about next week’s session. Past student Rachel Timbs visited the school this week in her role as a Macquarie University ambassador. Rachel is in her second year of an education/psychology degree and lives on campus at Dunmore Lang College. She had a lot to share with students about her experience, answering an array of questions about what you learn at school and your course of study and the experience of living on campus. Her enthusiasm and commitment to her degree was high: when you find something that interests you, you just want to keep on learning. The wet weather has made us flexible. The Year 11 agricultural students’ farm study changed to a presentation from the farmer at school. Mr Hunter, well versed in teaching, explained the process of production out on his property. When it is drier underfoot the students will have a short visit to see what it was that was explained to them. The cross country and colour run will happen. We will keep trying, anticipating a dry break in the weather. The Country Education Foundation Grenfell branch has been given the go ahead to be established. The group is planning to meet to do the initial paperwork in registering the organisation. The purpose of CEF is to provide students with financial challenges with support as they move from school to learning at university, TAFE or in an apprenticeship. This will provide the youth of our community with further support. If you are interested in being involved, contact the school. Our staff had a very productive day on Monday. The teachers, along with Grenfell Public School staff, learnt about the role of praise, part of our learning within the HOW2Learn modules. The research challenged a lot of strongly held views and practices, advocating that the feedback and praise needs to focus on the processes of learning along with the effort. There was a lot of discussion with teachers setting goals about how they can put this learning into practice. Our teachers also did a session on mindfulness; its impact on student and staff wellbeing and some simple strategies to apply. Our admin staff had a session on one of the department databases and how to use it effectively to access information. It was a good start to the term. Education Week starts Monday 1 August. We will be having an assembly on Wednesday 3 August to acknowledge those in our school community who make our school a wonderful learning environment. Margaret Carey Principal

Welcome back to school and more great learning.

Charlotte Simpson was invited to attend the HSC Intensive Studio Practice course run by the National Art School in Sydney. Charlotte’s learning was focused on drawing life forms. Year 6 students from Greenethorpe, Caragabal and Grenfell public schools and St Joseph’s started their secondary learning this week. On Wednesday they came for their first experience of learning science from science teachers in science laboratories.

Well-being Corner“Hold a true friend with both your hands.”

Nigerian proverb

Sometimes we take our friendships for granted, we break plans or forget to call; we go on and on about our own problems, overlooking the fact that our friends might

have troubles too. True friends will forgive us these faults and be understanding … which is just one of the many

reasons to cherish our true friends.

TODAYI’ll tell or show a friend how much I care.

Youth ParliamentDuring the second week of the holidays, Jess Pereira and Kira Gibson participated in the NSW YMCA Youth Parliament program. Over the course of the week they were given the opportunity to present reports in NSW Parliament House along with 130 other young people from across the state. Over the last few months, each participant has been involved in the creation of a bill or report to present in the Parliament House of NSW, and all of their hard work finally took form in a number of debates over the four sitting days.

Jess’ committee investigated mental health and presented a report outlining the prevalence of mental health issues in young people and a few ways to address them, including further incorporation of mental health education into school curriculum, particularly the science curriculum, with a focus on the physical and chemical causes of mental illness. Their report passed with amendments, and will be presented to real members of parliament for consideration.

Kira’s committee was investigating LGBT+ affairs, and put together a report that focused on the treatment and support of LGBT+ individuals in the education system. The debate on this report was one of the most hard-hitting over the week, and ended up being passed unanimously. The report suggested the implementation of safe spaces in schools, as well as greater conversation in PE classes about gender diversity and sexuality and the acceptance and support of people who identify as gender diverse. The committee hopes to get in contact with MPs in order to encourage them to pass the report into NSW legislation.

Over the program’s 15 years, 12 pieces of legislation created by young people have been passed into NSW legislation.

Youth Parliament is run by young people, for young people. It is a program that supports advocacy and engages young people with the parliamentary process through hands on involvement in the development of legislation. The environment fostered by the program is one of support and encouragement and it is a really amazing place to be.
